While i believe the director said it wasn’t gay, the animators said it was lmao. I think someone in the writing team said so too. And Jack D Grazer (who is the voice of Alberto) said for him the characters were queer too (while promoting this movie he came out as bi too). Ultimately the Luca team ended up saying that if it has a sequel they would be willing to explore, but the director has made no comments. I think is promising either ways if there is a sequel, but ultimately is not just another “all same sex friendships are a little gay” while not everyone in the production had those intentions, others most definitely did.
Well the movie is based on the Director's relationship with his childhood bestfriend, so I would lean on his interpretation being the most accurate. If other people on the project had their own ideas they obviously don't align with the Director who emphatically explained these characters were not gay.
@@eblots projects are more than their inspirations. Animators who had some ideas put those ideas in the way the characters move and look at each other and how the voice actors chose to do it. Regardless of where it was inspired and what the director might have want, people in the team loved the allegory to queer coming out stories and moved as such. Can’t have the sound and look of it say one thing and then deny it bc it was inspired by something else lmao. So much so that they have mentioned the possibility of it becoming explicitly stated in possible sequels. There’s PLENTY of examples of stories that grow and the authors lose control of it to a degree. There’s even stories about that and media literacy on it.
You don't make a movie this gay on accident. The fact that the director said "we weren't thinking about that" THEN in January in an interview for the Wrap he said something to the extent of "we toyed around with the idea of doing a romance between the characters but chose to keep it friendship." Dude... that's pretty evident that it was noticed and some people making the movie wanted it to be a crush. If it was a boy and girl people would say, "This movie is basically the childhood opening of Up but for the whole movie." Cause Luca is timid and shy like Carl and Alberto is reckless and excitable like Ellie. Cause it's two boys they say, "They're only friends!"
I think Giulia was supposed to be queer but the got rid of it because they didn't know how to show it without her having a romantic interest in someone (or maybe because it's just disney) That's what I've heard
I don't cry at hardly anything, even Pixar movies which are basically designed to destroy your soul, but this one had me tearing up mulitple times. I think the alegory is very evident, and I thought Alberto's feelings were more overt with how jealous he got over Luca spending time with Julia and wanting to leave to go to school with her. He even stood up to the villain to defend Luca. Plus, he sacrificed the thing he wanted most to make Luca happy. That's like a romcom level grand gesture of love. I'm sure there are friends in the real world who are that selfless, but this is a movie. We are programmed to see that kind of behavior in movies and think they belong together. And, honeslty, if they weren't both boys everyone would be shipping them.
Very well said with everything. Especially the part about if they weren't boys, people would be shipping them together. Of course Disney isn't gonna come out and stay it but this is a LGBT coded movie with gay subtext
4 grand gestures of love in a row. Luca telling Alberto he'd win the Vespa to show Alberto he matters to him and doing it on his own. Alberto coming to save Luca with the umbrella, Luca saving Alberto from being attacked by Ercole, then Alberto selflessly giving up the Vespa to give Luca the ticket for school. That's at least as many if not MORE than even a romance like Beauty and the Beast. These two are clearly in love.
This movie absolutely wrecked me the first time i watched it, especially bc even if you ignore the queer subtext, this shows little boys that they’re allowed to care about their best friends, and that hugging your friends and crying and just expressing any basic emotion is normal. We need more media where boys can just hug each other really tight and talk about their feelings instead of the typical “boys don’t cry” rethoric i see too often. Also rizzo, i was right there with you tearing up lmao
Benji comforting Rizzo while he’s crying was the sweetest. I love your friendship-and thank you for being so vulnerable with your emotions. ❤️❤️ Luca is such a great film!
Honestly I cried at the moment the two ladies put down their umbrellas too. It's like they saw the society was more accepting because of Luca and Alberto, so now they didn't need to hide themselves anymore. I think I cry because I'm gay and I can see it as LGBTQ+ allegory. I know how it feel when you feel like you need to hide your true self from society. It's definitely wasn't easy to come out back in the day and those ladies probably had been through a lot. It's just small moment but it managed to make me cry and that's why I really want Luca to win Oscar this year.

I watched this movie and I was like wow this kinda gay, then I said that to my family and they were like don't force a relationship on children. hetero relationships are usually forced on children, plus this more of ur first gay crush type a thing not a full on romantic relationship.
i love the idea of this movie as a queer metaphor. it's a great story without it but it just adds a lovely extra layer to it in my opinion. i love the idea that the two older women who reveal themselves as sea monsters at the end are basically outing themselves in solidarity. i love reading the grandma's line "some people will never accept him. but some will. and he seems to know how to find the good ones." in a queer light. i just think it's so wholesome. and a good lesson for parents of lgbtqiap+ kids.
I feel like it was left open to interpretation and that's the way it should be. Esp. for a kids movie. One boy might see that and think "I wish I had a best friend like that" and another boy might see it and think "I wish I had a bf like that".

There's a lot of gay-related content in a lot of countries. Italy isn't exactly over-represented compared to others.
11:24 that had me dying in the floor
11:57 oh my god-🤣
😂😂
Benji saying he loved The 13th Year growing up got me looking at him like “Of course you did 👀”
9:43 This part killed me because that song goes through my head whenever I remembered that line in Luca. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
We can all agree that luca is the male version of Ariel 😂
Absolutely!
9:45 I’m pretty sure this movie came out a few months before Encanto did. And Bruno’s og name was going to be Oscar. So this was not intentional 😂😂
Did y’all do Young Royals reactions already or not? I can’t remember lol but if u guys haven’t I shall sit patiently till u do lol
OMG, yes, please review/react to Young Royals! 🙏🙏🙏
This! ^^^
Yes please! 😭🙏
I watched this movie and I was like wow this kinda gay, then I said that to my family and they were like don't force a relationship on children. hetero relationships are usually forced on children, plus this more of ur first gay crush type a thing not a full on romantic relationship.
ITS OFFICIAL, THEY ARE GAY. ❤❤❤
🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
7:39 according to Google translate ’Vespa è libertà’ does translate to ‘Vespa is freedom’
i love the idea of this movie as a queer metaphor. it's a great story without it but it just adds a lovely extra layer to it in my opinion. i love the idea that the two older women who reveal themselves as sea monsters at the end are basically outing themselves in solidarity. i love reading the grandma's line "some people will never accept him. but some will. and he seems to know how to find the good ones." in a queer light. i just think it's so wholesome. and a good lesson for parents of lgbtqiap+ kids.
Rizzo looks like he’s already crying in the thumbnail - this is gonna be good! ❤️❤️❤️
I feel like it was left open to interpretation and that's the way it should be. Esp. for a kids movie. One boy might see that and think "I wish I had a best friend like that" and another boy might see it and think "I wish I had a bf like that".
YESSS! Nobody else has seen little mermaid 2😫. The songs hit
I was obsessed as a kid!
So many good jokes and edits in this! Had my stomach hurting 😂😂👏🏽
Thank you so much for doing this reaction. I don’t know if it’s because I’m Italian or what, but this movie makes me cry every time! Now I get to cry with Rizzo 💕
i have never laughed THIS hard at a luca reaction you guys immediately became one of my favorite reaction channels !!
🙌🙌😆
This movie was wayyy better than I thought it was gonna be. Also glad I got to see your video before going to write my test. Really helped me calm down ❣
Omg I love Benji's jokes cuz like even the simplest things make me laugh, like his, "only the greatest thing humans ever made." And Benji's like, "Poster"
😂
incredibly excited for you guys whenever you get a sponsorship, you guys deserve it for such amazing content! love how rizzo isn't afraid to cry and how benji is just :| at the end lol
Ohh this is such a wholesome movie, I hope you guys enjoyed it as much as i did! ❤️
You posted this at the perfect time!! I just got Tiramisu and ate it while watching!! 😋 You guys always brighten my day, thank you!! I look forward to your vids! :D
I know this is 2 years late and somebody probably already said it, but I need Rizzo and Benji to know that the relationship between the boys wasn't the part that made so many people make gay comparisons. It's the becoming a human and learning to love himself as he really is, while worrying about what his family or society might think of him whole bit. 😂 Love you guys lol 💗
SO I’M NOT THE ONLY OME WHO FELT LUCA GAVE GAY VIBES OKAY THANK YOU FOR THE VALIDATION
They got confirmed that they are theirs storyboards
11:23 LMAO we love the parallels here
5:22 6:31 29:00 I love when films/ tv shows introduce a concept for how mythical/ magical/ supernatural creatures could exist in our world w/out us ever knowing lol, i.e.:
- Twilight - Charmed - Shadowhunters - Grimm - Percy Jackson
- the Spiderwick Chronicles - HTTYD 3 - R.I.P.D. - Men in Black
- Harry Potter/ Fantastic Beasts - Merlin - The Sorcerer's Apprentice
- The Last Witch Hunter - Fate: the Winx Saga - The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
- H2O: Just Add Water - Aquamarine - Stardust - Primeval
- the Mummy 2017 - Lost Girl - Hellboy - I, Frankensten
- Teen Wolf - Bitten - The Vampire Diaries
- Race to Witch Mountain - Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, etc.
The end where y’all just say “Santa” before every cheese you can think of had me wheezing, that was actually hilarious
“Santa Cheetos!” “Santa Cheetos with lime!” I literally died
I love how sensitive Rizzo is , haha :) keep that heart wide open sir 🫡🫶🏽
"Go start a club, for Losers!"
As an IT fan and hearing Ercole say that I laughed and wondered if they wrote that in since the VA for Alberto is Jack Grazer aka Eddie Kaspbrak from IT. Also I would love to see you guys react to those movies?
“Awww Pistacho!.”
“It’s Pinocchio.”
LUBERTO CONFIRMED GAY
No
@@SimbaEdits77 yes it is…it’s confirmed?…
@@Heartbeatz2011.. no they didnt
Haven’t seen this movie since it was released on Disney plus. This movie and video is so good.
This was so fantastic, I'm loving this channel!!
I have just been constantly watching all of these movie reactions and they are both hilarious and heartwarming. It's always so sweet to see Rizzo get emotional and Benji comforting him. It's so great.
🥰🥰
The H20 condensation audio knocked me out - y'all are so funny and pick the best clips and references, I can't 😂
I commented at the very end in live, but yea the after credit scene is pretty short. If I remember it's uncle Ugo talking to himself in the deep ocean.
Okay haha we were mad at ourselves
@@PinkPopcast yea just watched it. He's drifting around in the dark talking about whale carcass to Giuseppe
But did you ever have Santa Mexican street corn Cheetos? They weren't around long, but t'were my jam.
Also, this might be my new favorite from you guys. Hilarious, a little chaos, a Thirteenth Year reference... Was secretly watching MTV's Undressed a part of anyone else's childhood? Cody showed up in an episode a lil while after that movie, and I was still very much into him.
Yes a thousand times yes. I'm so happy you're reacting to Luca and yes to me, it is GAY SUPER GAY. They're definitely queer coded characters
The clock puns killed me lmao
😊😊
This brightened my day so much! Thank you lads! xx
1. Your italian is actually pretty good
2. In Italy we don’t have the ocean, our sea is not too deep, that’s why it looks that pretty 😊
3. I come from the future, they gay
😂😂
Omg benji I LOST IT when you started singing for a moment from little mermaid 2. When I was little I liked that movie more. I loved melody and lets be honest I wanted to be a mermaid. Ariel had it backwards lol
Cried 3 times
1. Papa saying "Forza Julia!" 😭
2. When Luca used his people passing privilege and called Alberto a monster. 😢 I really got a sense of how my dark-skinned family feels when their white-passing siblings act like they don't know them
3. "You got me off the island. I'm ok" 🥹🥹🥹 then cheering Luca on as he went to school. No fear. No Bruno 🥹🥹🥹😭😭😭😭
Y’all need to watch the short film ‘ciao Alberto’
😭😭😭
It was so sweet and heartwarming and love it so much Rizzo being more emotional love that for him
Benji making little mermaid comments is laughable
Also get the coins 💅🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻so happy that you got a sponsor for the video
Living for the Little Mermaid 2 reference.
OMG YOUR REACTION WAS FUNNIER THAN THE ORIGINAL MOVIE! God I need laughs and you guys provide! Thank you!
I just want to say that I found you guys today for the first time, and I’ve already binge watched so many of your videos! You guys are absolutely hilarious! The funniest reactors I’ve seen on UA-cam, hands-down. Instant subscribe!!
Omg thank you!! We’re so glad you’re enjoying our endless jokes and talking 😅😅
18:02 the Tyler Warwick audio 😂
(I think)
That Little Mermaid 2 reference!!!!!!! I watched the shit out of that VHS when I was a kid.
Thank you.
SAME!! clearly 😅
Idk why I like to see Rizzo cry, I just do 🤷🏾♀️
Your friendship is great to see! If you want a movie to surprise the both of you in SO MANY WAYS, go into a completely blind reaction of Everything Everywhere All At Once! It is the best film of 2022 and it is gonna catch you off guard in so many ways!!
I relate with Benji there at the beginning, I cry at gay content too, I’ve watched Nimona 3 times and cried every time at the end, I feel you bro ❤😅
I was not prepared for the final "FINEEEEE, the end"
Maybe Coco is the movie that'll make you cry, Benji. Please watch it. Lots of love, guys.
The parallels with Call Me By Your Name in this movie tho
12:50 i almost never hear people break into that song 😱 that ish is my jam 🔥🔥
So good!!
The entrance of Ercole Visconti gave me Enzo Molinari vibes from The Big Blue.
"aw~ pistachio❤"
LOL I CAN'T
just found you guys and i absolutely love all the disney references especially little mermaid two i was like agghhh!!
“F you, I got a little Italian in me!
…
Last night”
You goofy aah mf ily so much Benji 😂😂
I cry every single time at multiple scenes with this movie. Also, yeah. Very queer subtext. Like it screamed at me from the very beginning from the very first time I watched this. I’m 💯 here for it.
I actually used to hate when the teacher would ask for strong boys to help put up chairs. I’m like, are you implying that I’m weak and only the boys can be strong lol
