Good points, TGV. May I suggest one more: the emotional connection you can have to certain pieces, expensive or not. An example: Earlier this year, my father passed away. We were very close, and I miss him badly. When my mother and I were going through some of his belongings I came across a square Orient quartz in a drawer. It was a gift from my mother, bought in the early 1980s, and the style is definitely a true child of that era. My plan is to have it fixed. Then I will put it on a nice leather strap and wear it with pride. In remembrance of my dear Dad. I call that horology.
Dear TGV, if you're reading this: I'm a 20 year old and I wanted to thank you enormously for igniting an interest in me for the magic of horology/watches. I look up to you as a role model and I've learned a lot from you regarding your views on life and dealing with negative things. Now I could never see myself looking up to these negative snobs, just classless. I hope they all try and better their ways. Stay positive and enjoy horology! Best regards from the Netherlands
I like his attitude as well. He's a real man's gentleman- it probably goes with his genealogy. If you look at the Gentleman's lifestyle/ fashion video blogs, you'll see a very different set of people and attitudes.
@@toml.8210 Genealogy does not determine ones status as a gentleman. Indeed, I think we've all lived long enough to know that the start of ones individual journey does not at all determine their finish line. One of the best things about being a Homo Sapien is that we all have the inherent ability to transform and recreate ourselves at any moment if we so choose. We can always be more (or less) than the sum of our parts.
I'm a 18-year-old Brazilian and have loved watches since I was a little kid. Unfortunately, lots of great pieces are not sold here, because even a Seiko SKX costs the same as the population's average income. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy this hobby as much as I can with the pieces I can afford. Love your work, TGV Regards!
@@davisantos3431 Great timepieces. If you ever want a watch to play around with and do modding, try the Invicta Divers watch. It has a crystal back and a Seiko movement. It looks like a Rolex Submarine and it's dirt cheap here in the USA. Prices range from $59.00 to $89.00 U.S dollars. Brand New.
As a guitarist and a watch guy, let me assure you, this advice applies to many hobbies/passions. The best bang for the buck in guitars, is $600-1100. The top end of current production guitars is around $11000 for say a Gretsch White Falcon. Vintage can go for much more. There are guitar snobs too. My favourite guitar cost me $799. I have more expensive instruments. As a tool, there is no better guitar in my collection. It looks cool too... 😉
It amazes me to see someone who owns several Rolex, Tudor, AP, Breitling, Omega etc defending and stepping in for a Seiko 5 💪😎 This is Gentry big time 🙏
As TGV says you should appreciate the Horology, if it it is all about Haute then maybe you are not a true watch head after all, and I mean that is okay, but just a bit pretentious in the end.
@@dudeofchicken if you really love mechanicals it may not be your thing, I appreciate them but I don't find them a must, there's many other things I appreciate in a watch which a grand seiko quartz nails.
Someone of true character takes the high road, and also demonstrates empathy for those who treat them with ill will. I've seen some of what the haters have tried to do to you and it's so commendable that you are able to take it in stride. You, like anyone else, aren't perfect. If you make a mistake you get pounced on and it's so refreshing to see that you don't have to stoop to their level and attack them back. You are a true gentleman, TGV.
Owning a broad range of watches suits my lifestyle. Let's put it another way. What would be the point of owning a half dozen pairs of luxury shoes when you're also going to need slippers, trainers or sandals?
Hey TGV, I am turning 40 and I recently found your channel about 1 year ago whilst starting my Horology journey. You have given me, without a doubt the absolute correct ethos when it comes to Horology. Of course I have my grail watch that I will obtain one day but watching your channel has taught me to appreciate and enjoy the journey and the beauty in watches and dont be lead by the hordes. "Being rich is having money, being wealthy is having time" I salute you Sir, keep up the excellent work.
TGV, I personally want to thank you for reassuring that my small collection all under $400 is still of significance when holding up against watches like those of the Trinity, Rolex, etc. So encouraging. Thank you, Tristano!
Absolutely love this video. I found this channel shortly after starting to enjoy watches again after a 10(ish) year hiatus. Thank you for keeping it real and showing all us “newbies” that you don’t have to spend $10,000 to have a beautiful piece on your wrist. Well done good man!
The beauty of the the watch game is that anyone can get into collecting no matter how much you make. I get just as much joy wearing a fun Casio as I do with a high end JDM or Swiss watch. As long as you are into the watch life, I give you a big thumbs up. My all time fav is my Seiko 300m tuna sbbn017 with the sapphire mod.
I just started this hobby and I started from affordable G-Shock under $100 each and I have 3 different models that fit different occassions. I then dug out my 20 year old Swiss Military diver watch, changed a NATO strap and a new battery, polished the case, now it‘s like a brand new watch. On my recent birthday, after watching your video on affordable diver watches, I bought Casio Duro and Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster BN0151-09L from Amazon‘s warehouse deals with big discounts. I love both of them. Thank you for your recommendations and for igniting my interest in watches. All my watches are affordable, and I am proud to own them!
Great video as always. People have asked me why am nice to strangers and friends who have done wrong and I say to them I have a friend in you tube whom I don't know personally but wish one day I will. A couple of years back I wrote to you on comments how much I love my Tissot Perpetual Calendar and your words were inspiring to say the least after possibly 100 videos you continue to inspire me to be a better person and work harder towards my Grail watches the Omega Aqua Terra,Jaeger lecoultre Reverso and Rolex Day Date. Thank you for being the person you are and wish all the best life has to give you.
I just wanna thank you TGV for being my favorite watch channel. I started wearing watches after joining the military since I couldn't have my phone on me all the time. Slowly, my wrist began to feel naked without a watch. Your welcoming approach to new watch enthusiasts and anti-snobbery is a breath of fresh air and I enjoy your videos so much. I just bought my first diver, a Citizen Promaster Diver Ecodrive, and I'm loving it! Keep up the great work!
Most snobs are there to boost their ego. If you ask them about the watch, they will say the price of the piece first. And a person who loves watches will tell you how less you have to spend to buy a good timepiece. Before you know, you too are infected with the love for watches. Prices are just numbers!
Mezbaul Alam Right on! The price of a product is not related to the owner's appreciation of said product. Among my vintage watches I have a 1970s Ricoh mechanical watch that I bought for peanuts, but it's really interesting for having a Durowe movement, probably still built in Pforzheim. When Timex bought Laco/Durowe, Timex kept Durowe's electronic movement section, and sold the mechanical movement section to INT, part of Swiss Ebauches SA. Quite curious as Ricoh had full access to Takano's in-house movements, so it makes a very fascinating watch, and it has nothing to do with the amount of money I spent on it.
@@theonlyredspecial Not only UA-cam but in real life as well, and not just limited to watches. I live in an area which has gone very fashionable - and unfortunately very snobbish over the last decade or two. The streets are full of Bentley, Maserati, Porsche SUVs,, even seen a Rolls-Royce SUV or two, not to mention Ferraris and such, but the drivers skills are mostly quite feeble and look at me like a worm that just crawled out of the dirt for driving a cheap car, I actually got almost hit plenty of times. The fact that I had been a test driver since the 1980s was neither here nor there.
Exactly. Just for reference, many years ago, I bought a watch when I was a kid, probably 1983 to 1984 when I was 15 or 16 years old. I still have that watch. First I'll tell you a little about the watch, then at the end, I'll tell you how much I paid for it. First off, it's a quartz digital. That oughta earn me a few thumbs down lol. Approximately 34mm case, and all the complications possible to have on a watch at the time, except for a calculator, but that's a story for another watch... 12/24 hour time (day, month and date in top half of the display; and hour, minute and seconds on the bottom half; no year input so it won't allow for leap year), displayed on all complications except the stopwatch, stopwatch with 3 lap split time and memory, 23:59:59 countdown timer, alarm (only one), hourly chime, ability to set for a second time zone (set manually, no city display), and a step pacer (switchable between mi/km; programmable between 65 and 180 what I assume are steps per minute because I've never used it, and 50m water resistance (probably not even splash resistant anymore due to numerous battery changes over the years and never changing the O-ring. I'm sure the seals aroun each pusher are probably worn too, along with whatever they use to seal the crystal against the case.) The only thing wrong with it, is it doesn't make noise anymore. The last time I replaced the battery, after I had the back cover off, after I had removed the three screws that hold the battery clamp in place, and while I was lifting that clamp out of the way, I still had the screwdriver in my hand. I hit and broke off the little tab that sticks up and grounds against the back cover to make the alarm, chime, button press, and pacer all functional and make their respective sounds. And now for the reveal... It's an Innovative Time Sports Master, model number Q700BRN. It a black resin housing with a black silicone band. It's had several batteries over the past 36-37 years, and I've replaced the band twice. I've spent more money replacing batteries and bands than I paid for the watch. A lot more. A hell of a lot more. No, make that a shit ton more. You know how when you're at Walmart and they have those two four sided spinning racks on the counter? One of those racks is the locked one that they keep the G-Shocks in. Mine would have been in the other one if it was Walmart... but it was at Kmart it would have been in the one that they keep the lower end Casio and Timex watches. I paid around $5 for it. Yep, a $5 off the counter watch that has more scratches in the crystal than it does clear spots is still alive and going strong. When this battery dies, I'm going to put a new one in it. And another, and another, and so on until a new battery doesn't do it anymore.
Very timely video, ever since you started on WatchBox, I've read so many bad comments about you, but it didn't match what I've seen on this channel. So Sad to see people that can not accept other people success and happiness. Keep the good work.
I hate when people say “Quartz watches have no soul” This is total BS in my opinion: As long as it ticks, measures time and make you look like a champ when wearing it nothing else matters. Great video man, Regards from Baja MX!
One of your best videos to date. As I have gotten deeper into watches and have learned to appreciate all kinds of watches. One of my favorite watches of all time is my Tissot Quartz. I first bought one at age 21 when I finally could afford a "nice watch". I still have a quartz Tissot, as well as several Casios. Watch snobs are missing out and as you say are most likely unhappy people whose self value can only be found in the material goods they possess. In fact I would not even consider such a person to be a true watch enthusiast. Bravo, TGV!
Invicta is worth critique. The best part of these “swiss made” watches is the seiko movements. They sell their watches for an obscene retail, usually around 1K, on QVC for 500, and then $99 on jomashop. So when people buy invicta at full retail its criminal!
So blame the invicta company for there poor pricing strategy but dont hate on the watches or the people that like the larger more opulent style that invicta provides. Also if you do a little bit of research before buying you easily avoid the large make ups
I gotta say I am a snob when it comes to quartz watches... but that’s just cause I love that smooth sweeping second hand and the way it feels when I wind it.
FatDave but it is a clearly pointed taste. I enjoy quartz, metal G-Shocks because for me accuracy and durability are the highest values. But still we can enjoy watches, just a different part of the market.
A watchmaker had a big fanboy moment servicing my Marathon diver. It was awesome. Then recently I complimented a guy’s Citizen diver at a cafe. Lots of interesting watches folks are wearing. Watch snobbery is 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
Watching this while having breakfast, before heading to one of my last and hardest Medical School exams... The picture about the fear of failure and to stay positive no matter what really changed my day!! It just gave me strength to face whatever the result will be. Thank you TGV.
I agree with everything you've said TGV, great video! I'd like to add something to the discussion on dealing with haters: I think something that's helped me deal with hate is putting myself in their shoes. Nobody thinks what they're doing is wrong, even if it is and hurts others. Knowing that I tend to forgive people for being mean and understand why they might be doing it. This has been huge in helping me ignore peoples nasty comments. Keep up the good work 👍
That's why it's best to start at your comfort level. Mine was an Omega Speedy reduced, others are G-Shocks, or Seiko. However, IF you or anyone want's that grail. By grail I mean something that you look for, work hard for, a reward/accomplishment timepiece. If it's too easy to find or afford. It truly isn't a grail watch no matter what brand. Try to avoid watches that will get in the way of your grail. THAT"S what TGV and many other UA-camrs will not tell you. Like TGV quoted Winston Churchill "You'll never get to your destination if you stop to throw stones at every barking dog".... Well you'll never get to your grail if you keep buying watches that are cheap, expensive, homage, compromise watches, or just crap. In the end you will save so much money and time. You will appreciate what you have and then. That's when you can continue with the hobby if you choose to.
Thank you TGV. This is one of the very best from you. As a new collector, I’ve faced several snobs in the community flashing luxury watches and some condemned those who owns cheaper watches. Your video and quotes from those great men proved the snobs their insecurity and inferiority. I enjoy your vid . Thank you.
As a big Casio fan I often hear a lot of things from watch snobs and wannabe watch experts alike. But noby can deny that iconic pieces like the Casio Royale (World Time) or the Data Bank are an important part of horology as same like my wunderful Citizen Promaster Automatic Diver or a wunderful Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Thanks for the great content and your commitment for the watch community.
I had a good laugh with this one. I also remembered John Cleese when you started about Swatch. And I feel a sense of worth and enrichment after watching this. Thank you TGV
enjoying my invicta as much as a tissot as much as my seiko as much as my citizen! where can one go wrong? Nowhere! it is just a frame of mind, I guess!
Thanks for making this video. It actually gave me the confidence to go back to wearing my Invicta watches in public. I just got back into the hobby after the toxicity of the "watch snobs" had all but driven me out. You make horology accessible to everyone, even a dock-worker on a budget like myself. Cheers from Orlando Florida, keep up the good work.
Excellent video! I have watches I've paid less than $100.00 US for that I enjoy as much as those I've paid over a $1000.00 for. I currently have about 30 watches in my collection, and I really can't think of any of them that I wish to part with at this time. I just ordered a Volstok Amphibian, for $120.00 because it reminds me of one I sold last year with the exception of a Seiko bezel insert mod. I am as thrilled to be getting this watch back in my hands as any watch I've brought in the past 6 years since I've gotten into collecting (except maybe my sword hand Omega, Seamaster 300... Love that watch). Thanks TGV, I've learned so much watching your show!
So many good points. I bought a invicta stars and stripes (invicta 27962) I wear it on the 4th of July. Also pull it out in chat group to expose snobs. They says so many hurt full things I don't care I love the watch. Keep up the good work I enjoy learning new things.
See, you found a wonderful reason to own an Invicta. The NH35A is a good movement, why would anyone complain about it? It's definitely not my style but it looks unique and fun, that's what watches are for!
I do hope that watch snobs eventually find some sort of happiness later in life, maybe perhaps they'll learn how to truly appreciate watches and life in general.
When I came across your channel a couple of years ago is when I got "in to" watches. I've always worn a watch, but you got me interested in the basic Seiko 5 black dial with visible case-back movement, and I loved it so much that I then got my baby, the SKX009, followed by the Navitimer, a Hamilton Khaki, a 1940's Hamilton and my late father-in-law's Timex 100. I rotate them out constantly. Dig my watches, but still doesn't come close to my vinyl collection...true love This old guy loves the channel,...peace from Memphis, TN
Just loved this particular video. As someone who happens to get watches just as beaters, I can certainly resonate with that. My actual daily driver is a "Hulk green" Loreo Sea Ghost: nice, comfy, not atomic clock level accuracy, but enough for my needs, and completely adorable and affordable (60 bucks, and 100m water resistance, yay!). Obviously, as any enthusiast, I would love to have a Patek, Rolex or Omega, but there are priorities and "priorities". Either way, I can't agree with you more on the points covered, but this doesn't just apply to watches but to life as a whole, and nowadays people have completely forgotten there's elegance in humility. I had no idea of your health issues, I hope everything is going well my friend, just take care and keep smiling :)
I have to say, Hugo is a wonderful 'technique' utilized in order to deflect criticism when mentioning something offensive/controversial... Please continue this clever creativity.
There are lots of UA-cam watch channels that spend an exorbitant amount of time disparaging any watch brand that isn’t a Rolex. This watch thing is a hobby and to spend energy in a negative way on a hobby is bizarre. It’s just a watch.
I love this episode. I feel sorry for people who can only talk about value proposition when it comes to their watches. I have a gold Omega Seamaster deVille that I got for my Bar Mitzvah in 1974. It was a gift from my grandparents, my grandfather was a watchmaker who loved Omega. Today it's only worth well less that two thousand dollars but I would not trade it for the fanciest Patek or Lange. One more thing, this watch has a gold Speidel Twist-O-Flex band on it because my uncle was the Speidel sales rep for NYC and the surrounding area.
So many of our watches have such a great story behind them. You are lucky to have such a great story about your wonderful Omega. To me, the De Ville is as good as it gets.
Mr. Sharp dude, Cartier IS a fashion brand, that’s what they want to be, that is their business model. That’s what their ceo tells their shareholders they are. They are a jewelry company.
Actually it is... Sorry man but you can't change history. Doesn't mean it's bad watches tho... Oh and I'm French dude. Don't give me the snob thing. French is just not Swiss.
I promise never to comment on that other guy who wears his sunglasses upside down on his head indoors because he doesn't want to lose it. Thanks TGV for all your videos. You my brother, have a lot of class and a lot of charisma. I love Hugo too. Please keep Hugo alive.
For the “gathering of watch enthusiasts” group you referenced, all brands are allowed. The “no invitca “ thing is more of a tounge-in-cheek inside joke. I’ve seen plenty of Invicta’s at the meetings.
Chad Fuller right he made a statement saying that the company is the opposite of what we all Love they have no respect for their customers and no respect for themselves and they don’t want to be a part of that. I can’t find fault in that logic. However I can understand the other side being that those watches invicta and dw have great marketing skills and grab ppl that would have never gotten into the hobby and they can become more savvy with time and research, also better brands can learn from their marketing strategies because there is a demand out there.
I got to be honest with you TGV. I haven't watched your videos for a bit because I kept on liking watches. But man, I've been missing out. Your life lessons are what I've been missing out. Thanks a lot!
TGV, Thank you for making this video. Recently I made a simple positive statement about valuing respect and civility. My statement was made in support of a set of comments made on a well known UA-cam watch channel. It was interesting that my simple statement was answered with unkind and malicious follow up comments. If you don’t like something, move on.
I'm glad you saw that to and I did the same an got some negative comments myself not sure if it's jealousy but the Doxxing nature of what I see some UA-camrs doing towards TGV has made me unsubscribe to there channels.
9:52 - Invicta may have a bad reputation but i know several individuals who began their watch collection with an Invicta and that includes me! That just makes me wonder what that specific group's opinion would be on a vintage Invicta.
TGV, I just love your UA-cam channel. You have class, style and a sense of humor. Unfortunately, the UGWC Facebook page is not a similar place. It is populated by petty, sarcastic, and mean spirited people who seem to delight in making cruel remarks to anyone to whom they feel superior. They manage to drive away new people who have the misfortune of asking what they consider a stupid question. It is odd, because the commenters on your UA-cam channel are almost all respectful, polite and kind. Thanks for what you do.
Watch snobs are often caught up in a game of competition and domination with others. They are tuned into a conversation supported by discussions online and by watch brands themselves. It takes effort to find a more meaningful reason to connect with a watch for your own reasons but it’s truly worth it. Take care TGV.
I've been so guilty of being rude and dismissive here on UA-cam. There is so much to be said for kindness and politeness online. You've changed my whole outlook when it comes to online behavior. I admire what you are doing and support you wholeheartedly. Hugo is such a bastard haha!
I bought a Poljot Sturmanskie Pilot's watch, with the same logo as Yuri Gagarin had on his watch when he went to space in 1961. 100 Euro. It keeps time well, hand would. The cyrillic letters and the fact that they don't have shops in Belgium make it a very rare watch. The swiping second hand is lovely. I came close to buying an Omega Railmaster about a month ago, but then realised I use the date-window often, and I like my watch now. Oh, it has an etching of a russian fighterpilot with a Yak 3 on the back...
Tgv keeping a fine balance between his keeping his loyal viewers happy and also his business commitments love you always thanks for stayin true to what your channel ethos were are
I'm glad I stumbled across this video. I've been moderately interested in watches for a long time but recently got more interested, especially in the technical side. I've been practically binge watching videos (a lot of tear down and repair videos for the most part because that sounds like a lot of fun to me) for a couple weeks now, and started watching your videos a few days ago. Sadly I'm one of those people who will never be able to afford some of the nicer pieces, I can't justify to even get into the triple digit range. Honestly it shocks me that people talk about watches that cost hundreds or thousands of dollars like it's nothing, I instantly felt excluded and a bit silly for even thinking I could get into the hobby. These people toss around watches that cost more than everything I own like it's the most normal thing in the world. I looked around to join some social media groups and was instantly put off due to the fact that only high dollar watches were being shared. I have enough experience with social media, especially various hobbyists groups, to know that if I posted some of my watches I'd probably not have a good time with it, so I abandoned that idea right away. I got hooked on skeleton automatics, and I'm growing a small collection of the ultra-budget ones, because that's what I can afford and justify paying for. My girlfriend bought me a Forsining for my birthday, it's a $40 watch, and I think it's incredible. It's one of the best watches I've ever had, and I'm going to be buying more of their watches. Sure the finish of those watches doesn't compare to more expensive ones, but they work, and they work surprisingly well. Plus I like how they look, and I'm happy with that. I'm actually going to buy a new one soon and have it shipped to a buddy, I showed him some pictures of my most recent skeleton and now he's drooling for one, so I'm going to hook him up.
Spot on! By putting yourself out on social media, you invite the bad along with the (mostly) good, unfortunately. Need to rise above the bad tides because a watch hobby is a very personal affair. And, with the anonymity barrier social media creates, anyone and who has a gauche tongue is free to essentially crap on others without restraint or consequence. As such, it may become all too easy for the joy and willingness to explore and expand ones adventures in watch collecting to become quickly spoiled by such whiplashing negative attitudes. With regards to watch snobs and by default watch trolls, the worst thing you can do for yourself is acknowledge such poor behavior, bad attitude and bad words with a rebuttal. 1) A show of no respect gets no respect in return from you. 2) You will only goad such people by trying to defend your position or counter-attack in response. 3) Any response from you to acknowledge such distasteful comments would already be a win for them. 4) The worst thing for these types of idiots is for you to ignore or silence them quietly. What they crave is attention and to hear their own voice, so don't allow for it. With all that above, I either ignore or simply delete such comments and block such people and therefore never have to deal with them in the future. I'm all for a respectful difference of opinion that exhibit both intelligence, fairness, reasoning, and constructively criticism. Snobs and trolls usually are not capable of a decent and intelligent remarks and conversations. If not, it's not worth a damn to me and I will do my part to remove any negativity from my posts or videos I make. I don't need to waste any time and energy by lowering myself to the patheric level watch snobs and trolls reside at. And, I keep my watch collecting experience for me positive and carry on.
These days fewer and fewer people even choose to wear a watch at all. So when I see someone who has made the conscious decision to wear a watch I make a nice comment on it......regardless if it is a Patek or an Invicta. We would all be well served to take this approach as watch enthusiasts.
Exactly. A colleague of mine was wearing what was probably a £20 Bauhaus style quartz watch but I complimented her because it still had a nice looking design despite the relatively low quality.
Wonderful video, you Sir have pure class and indeed have inspired me where I have purchased a whole number of Seiko, Casio, Citizen and Tissot watches and now I’m as proud and happy to wear them along side watches costing hundreds of times more. They are so much fun. Well done.
I have another saying for you TGV, that you could use for some of these bad vibe plebs that I’m seeing on UA-cam at the moment... I’ll say no more about them! It’s a phrase we use in the music business. “Be careful of who’s feet you tread on, on the way up.... They may be attached to the arse you have to kiss on the way down”. More power to you dude! Stay Gentry, Stay positive!
You are spot on sir. I could buy an omega Seamaster 300 if I chose to. I currently have an Orient Blue Ray. I absolutely adore this watch!! It’s one of the cheapest watches in my collection but it gets more wrist time than all of the others.
People hate on the invicta pro diver, 'cause oh it'll never be a "real" watch it's just faking it. Oh whatever, once a friend saw mine and thought it was neat, so I took it off and gave it to them. Because of that, now they're interested in watches and the history in it. That's worth so much more to me than having a "real" watch.
I had a Rolex Daytona and swapped it with my friend for his Soviet Picket watch from the 30s, I did so because I didn't enjoy the Daytona. No point in having a luxury watch if you don't enjoy it. Great video btw, love your down to earth style!
Great video, much needed and 'timely' topic to be addressed! Also, I've been mulling over which Casio to get for the past 6 months -- 4x longer than it took to decide on my first grail watch once I had saved. Seeing that Casio on your wrist just helped me decide :) As always, thanks so much for the stellar content! Cheers, Ari
When I heard Invicta wasn’t allowed at that snobbish GTG it makes me want to find out where this takes place and wear one of my Invicta’s. Those people are the definition of watch snobs.
Excellent vid! I had a very unpleasant experience with a “snob” who was delighting in belittling me about my love of Edox watches. Apparently I don’t belong in watch collecting circles if that’s my “level”! The point which he obviously doesn’t get is that I’m not bothered about ‘belonging’ to any community. I buy a watch because I like it, can afford it, and will enjoy wearing it, NOT because I want to impress shallow people & belong in their little club. Enjoy your watches people 🙂
Absolute banger tgv, nailed it. You helped get my first seiko and introduced me to automatics and the hobby. 15 watches later including 3 swiss. I picked up my first invicta last week, and I bloody love it. It pops, makes me smile, and after a bunch of automatics I love i can just grab the quartz and go, no worries. Cheers tgv, keep up the good work.
Great content as ever TGV. Absolutely spot on. It’s all about content content content. Your videos are educational, positive and correct. They are thought provoking, enjoyable and make me think more about my own watch wish- list. Who wants to watch a loud rant, full of negative hate?. Not me. Ignore the cheap tacky haters who bring the world down and spread negativity. It’s laughable that certain UA-camrs seem to post their own videos as a reply to your original content. A kind of negative repost to your recent purchases or recent videos. Perhaps that’s a sign of their insecurity of your success or just a lack of their own original thinking?! Keep positive, keep enjoying the variable world of horology. Keep posting your great videos. All the very best from a UK fan.
Thank you! You got a big heart! I'm a very little watch collector, mainly mechanical watches, the ones defined "pmw" (poor man's watch). Japanese, Russian, a Mido, a Fortis and an old Bulova too :-) I apreciate always your clarity of mind and your attitude to be a fair gentleman. Your reviews always got to the point and every word is utile and well placed.
Excellent video TGV, could not of been more correct about the misuse of the term Horology. It truly is a shame so many people look to watches as another medium to prove their worth - personally there is nothing more vulgar in my eyes when a person seems to go out of their way to display their outrageously expensive watch, It seems to me like the watch is wearing the person rather than vice versa in that situation.
Fantastic! You have a great sense of humor and the talent to uplift the spirit. I've become a watch fan thanks to you and have learned A LOT through your videos. Keep up the good work and good luck with everything!
Fantastic video TGV! You put things in perspective and keep us all positive and bring true joy to collecting and wearing watches, regardless of price and status. With warm wishes on This Father’s Day, from San Francisco.
I just but an Invicta 3044. I love the look, it makes me feel good. I dont care how anyone else feels about it. I lost my mom and daughter. Perspective, enjoy what makes you happy. This post needed to be done. Thank you tremendously
I simply like your Chanel TGV Yout positivity when you talk about whatches triggers the interest for many whatchbrands . At least for me . Being negative takes down the interest. Keep up the good work!!!
I'd like to thank you for introducing me to nicer watches, as well as complementing what I've worn almost my whole life, the Casio g-shock series. I've been watching for a few months now and going through your catalog. Based upon your positivity I picked up my first automatic and what I consider a "pretty" watch. I fell in love with the looks of a Bulova Frank Sinatra. Stainless and rose gold tone, with a beautiful dial in a rectangle shape. I'm sure as it's a series watch the value went through the floor as soon as I purchased it. However, I've been wearing it everywhere since purchasing it, even as I work from home. Again thank you TVG for opening my horizons.
Do you think Hugo might start his own Watch Snobbery channel? Maybe I shouldn't give him any ideas =) I've got a totally random question - How did the the verb "watch" become a noun to describe a wrist-worm timepiece?
Back in the era when a battle unit had only a few or one timepiece, it was passed to the soldier who was "on watch" for the shift, I believe, and the term transferred over to be synonymous with the device itself. Because who ever was on watch, had *the watch* literally.
Also very true regarding happiness and feeling inadequate thus acquiring luxury items. I noticed in your other older videos that, as you say, have more snobbery in them. Like myself, when unhappy I too have felt this, and I think everyone has to fight their ego, especially with watches. We should all just be happy with a sports 5, but often seek to gravitate to something we deem as "More" when realistically, these watches should satisfy our passion. However, the human condition seems to dictate the lust for a more luxurious and 'growth' like state that we seem to cling to.
A very nice video, thank you for spreading positive energy in the watch community. Hoping you'll get your hands on a Squale Giramondo for review, I'm on the hunt for a GMT.
I have just bought a speedy reduced II and I'm absolutely loving it. It was thanks to your review a couple of years ago that I realized it was the second edition that I really wanted, rather than the mildly flawed first edition. That's my short-term watch grail bought so a big thank you for all the quality content helping me choose the correct watch for me. Keep up the great work.
Congrats!!! Not a month goes past I don't think about buying a reduced. No wonder you love it, I miss mine terribly. Please enjoy it a little extra for me. Thank you Nathan for the inspiring words, it helps me a great deal. Onwards and upwards, Best regards, TGV
I don’t care what haters say and what reasons that have (excuses) for hating you, this channel single handedly turned me into a watch fanatic. I bought my SKX007 and Quartz SMP from the guidance on this account and I LOVED everything about the experiences. I sold the SMP and I’m saving for the new one but there is so many amazing watches and companies that you’ll miss if you follow the brand snob accounts. Tally ho TGV! Onward and upward!

As a guitarist and a watch guy, let me assure you, this advice applies to many hobbies/passions.
The best bang for the buck in guitars, is $600-1100. The top end of current production guitars is around $11000 for say a Gretsch White Falcon. Vintage can go for much more. There are guitar snobs too. My favourite guitar cost me $799. I have more expensive instruments. As a tool, there is no better guitar in my collection. It looks cool too... 😉

As TGV says you should appreciate the Horology, if it it is all about Haute then maybe you are not a true watch head after all, and I mean that is okay, but just a bit pretentious in the end.
It’s not about the brand name inscribed on the dial. It’s about how the watch makes you feel and the memories you make with it.

Yeah. You have a great attitude. More people need to be like you!

Hey TGV,
I am turning 40 and I recently found your channel about 1 year ago whilst starting my Horology journey.
You have given me, without a doubt the absolute correct ethos when it comes to Horology. Of course I have my grail watch that I will obtain one day but watching your channel has taught me to appreciate and enjoy the journey and the beauty in watches and dont be lead by the hordes.

I salute you Sir, keep up the excellent work.
I know you message was the goal, but my favorite part was Hugo. When he told the plebs to count their pennies I cracked up.
I laughed at least 5 times over Hugo this video...
Hugo was great in this one 😅
The beauty of the the watch game is that anyone can get into collecting no matter how much you make. I get just as much joy wearing a fun Casio as I do with a high end JDM or Swiss watch. As long as you are into the watch life, I give you a big thumbs up. My all time fav is my Seiko 300m tuna sbbn017 with the sapphire mod.
I've attended Red Bar events and have always found them very welcoming. I've worn my G-Shock Rangeman and had no sense of snobbery at the gathering.
Cool, another Reverso fan! Such an elegant design, not just the shape but the mechanism.
He finally learned a reference number. . . and it’s for a Casio! LOL!
Always keeping it classy despite the the current wave of negativity ( you know what I mean). That’s why YOU ROCK. Love the channel. Love the message.
Seele2015au well said. The watch community on UA-cam can be very toxic too. Sadly.
I'm sure the seals aroun each pusher are probably worn too, along with whatever they use to seal the crystal against the case.)
The only thing wrong with it, is it doesn't make noise anymore.
Um Yah, its not about investing. Video went right over your head

This has been huge in helping me ignore peoples nasty comments.

Ditto on the “no debt.” Never borrow money for luxuries or toys.

Just loved this particular video. As someone who happens to get watches just as beaters, I can certainly resonate with that.
When you get older and can't read the date, you will be 100% happy with no-date watches!
@@benjaminbarrera214 that's why Rolex is not my thing... date window is a bit too present... that and the price...
I find watch snobs have little to no concept of natural health.
Lol ur comments are hilarious
@@jackneals5585 So are yours...
Good for you sir! You have my respect.
I like that, you are are an inspiration. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Brian,
Best regards,
TGV
Exactly. A colleague of mine was wearing what was probably a £20 Bauhaus style quartz watch but I complimented her because it still had a nice looking design despite the relatively low quality.
Brian B Absolutely 👍
Wonderful video, you Sir have pure class and indeed have inspired me where I have purchased a whole number of Seiko, Casio, Citizen and Tissot watches and now I’m as proud and happy to wear them along side watches costing hundreds of times more. They are so much fun. Well done.
You should do a video about the Antikatherya Mechanism. I feel that it is closely related to watches, as it showed moon and sun position, and more.
Exactly the same mate. My Seiko sea urchin gets the nod over my Tudor black bay 9 times out of 10. Awesome watch!
TGV, another good video. Appreciate your perspectives on life and watches. Keep up the good work. All the best in health. “Onwards and upwards”👍
TGV, thanks for the great video. Always inspiring. This video is about more than just watches.
Spend your pennies wisely, plebs😂😂😂 this made my day!
I had a Rolex Daytona and swapped it with my friend for his Soviet Picket watch from the 30s, I did so because I didn't enjoy the Daytona. No point in having a luxury watch if you don't enjoy it. Great video btw, love your down to earth style!
Just wondering what your thoughts are on rotary watches, to my knowledge, you haven't really covered them, I own 3 and I like them all.
It's up to you. If you enjoy them then that's what matters.
Cheers,
Ari
So nice to see Hugo again. Hilarious as always!
Ughhh! 🤢🤮
Thanks for giving us some Hugo! Love it.
9:50 now enter with your MVMT and see how they react. 😂
That would mean I'd have to cast aside my Daniel Wellington to make room for it. The horrors. The horrors.
but don't forget the amazon link down below
@@J_The_Colossal_Squid Daniel Wellington is equally sufficient, it is all in the name.
All hail the new king Vincero. It is better than Rolex according to some bearded fashion bloke on the interwebs.
@@Ohne_Silikone I'd sooner buy the same, or close to the same watch off of Aliexpress and put my own name on it. Squids rule. Humans drool.
I own a Rolex GMT Master II and a Casio GShock 5610. Love them equally
Fantastic video TGV!
You put things in perspective and keep us all positive and bring true joy to collecting and wearing watches, regardless of price and status.
With warm wishes on This Father’s Day, from San Francisco.
Hello from Hong Kong! You are spot on about dealing with negativity. Why cant we all just enjoy what united us in the first place - watches!
I just but an Invicta 3044. I love the look, it makes me feel good. I dont care how anyone else feels about it. I lost my mom and daughter. Perspective, enjoy what makes you happy. This post needed to be done. Thank you tremendously
I simply like your Chanel TGV
Yout positivity when you talk about whatches triggers the interest for many whatchbrands . At least for me .
Being negative takes down the
interest.
Onwards and upwards,
Best regards,
TGV
Finally something original, and not something stolen, ahem.....I mean copied from another author...Very gentry indeed.
