My Ultimate Submariner? - How Tudor & Rolex Perfected The 7928 Watch

  • Today I have the pleasure of exploring a very special watch indeed. Before the revitalized, modern Tudor became a hit, and before the famous “Snowflake” Subs were issued to France’s elite Marine Nationale, Tudor was already making waves with their 7900 series of early Submariner watches.
This first era of Tudor dive watches not only set the standards that the brand would build upon over the next 50 years, but they were also the first watches to be issued to the most elite of military divers, the US Navy Seals. These watches are now becoming well respected, highly desired, and out from the shadow of the more common offerings from big brother brand Rolex and their Submariner equivalent references.
In this video I discuss how this watch became the legend it has and why it’s been the top choice for world-class divers. I share why I would buy this Tudor over a previously purchased (and subsequently sold) vintage BlancPain Bathyscaphe MC4 from the same historic era. Join me as I test it out on an excursion to some of my favorite places to unwind in New York City’s Central Park.
Ultimately I ask: Is the ever increasing price worth it? Could this be the dream steel Submariner dive watch I always wanted? Let’s dive in and find out!

    Hi TGV
Oh, NYC in the summer - wonderful😊
And a Tudor to die for. Really like the newer Black Bays too, but there’s nothing like a well kept patinaed vintage piece. Talking of details, the Black Bay 36mm has kept the curved writing on the dail. Furthermore, it’s my favorite of the new models.
    Keep up the good work👍

Hi TGV. Another great video. I truly enjoyed the format and style of this review. Very informative and interesting and I learned a lot. Thanks. I have a quick question. I just purchased a Tissot Seastar 1000, Powermatic 80 and I absolutely love it. Great price at just over $400, and I think it packs a punch at a far greater price point. Great movement with an accuracy of less than 2 seconds/day fast and I have yet to find a design flaw. My question is: Why does the Tissot Seastar get so little attention on UA-cam? I read some favorable reviews, yet I haven’t found any You Tube Channels which have reviewed the Seastar. I’m curious as to your thoughts as to why the Seastar doesn’t get much attention. I hope I’ve purchased a good watch:)? Thanks for your consideration in answering my query.

I purchased 2 Tudor watches from Tourneau back in 1996-a Submariner and their last chronograph before moving on to the Tiger model. I’ve been very happy with both although the chronograph had to go back twice due to quitting within 12 hours! Both came with oyster bracelets although the Submariner’s version was the folded type and the chronograph the screwed links. For some reason I swapped them so now the Submariner wears the screwed links. Both are in excellent condition as I don’t wear them often as I’m quite hard on my watches.
Recently purchased an Invicta speedway 9211 as a daily watch and am quite happy with it. Feels great and even the stopwatch function works well with screw down pushers. But they’ve swapped the sweep second hand which ticks constantly. Any thoughts?
    Keep up the great videos.

Great background on the brand, the dive watch genre, and this model in particular. Yes, I do find myself bored by the Rolex Submariner design, mainly the dial markers and “MBZ” hour hand. But it is unlikely that I will ever give up my Sub homage precisely because of the design bloodline to the origin of the genre. Tudors seem to be remarkable watches, all the more for their being affordable and until recently not being such a status symbol or “I’ve arrived!” statement. Your love of watches is infectious.

The Royal Canadian Navy also issued Tudor 7928 Submariners to divers in and around 1967. Some years ago I found a box of old Tudor divers discarded in a cardboard box in the base dive shack. Aside from the 7928, there were a couple Tudor 9401/0 "hybrids" with snowflake hands, and a blue MN snowflake.

Probably paid a premium on it, but had to pull the trigger as this opportunity doesn't come around very often, its the 1655 & very unique in design, I understand this particular model had a very short production run as well. I love the indices on this version of the Explorer, I hope that Rolex bring a similar designed Rolex Explorer back one day.

I do respect those who care, restore vintage watches, something I don’t think I can do, I have one 62 year old gold round Hamilton which was given to my mother for me on my birth, had it serviced some time ago by Hamilton and it works, I know it’s no Rolex, but it’s mine and have a feeling for it. I could probably afford one luxury watch in my life, and most likely if not for sure it will be an Omega, always liked the brand and styling, more was leaning towards a speedmaster, but some of the new seamasters do look nice. I would go pre owned on a late model watch at the most. Nice review of the 50 year old submaster.

Most in my family wants to give her a smartwatch, after watching your videos I want to give her a watch that can make her look her best in her profession, but at the same time not be a "show off" to her seniors and fellow associates.
May I suggest maybe starting a set of videos that can give good watch advise for people starting careers in the white-collar field? I don't want to give her a submariner (and it homage) and it will look out-of-place.

That was a good call to avoid the plated case. I like vintage watches and I prefer the all-steel waterproof watches that have been around since the 40s. That way I get the best of both worlds, vintage-styling and modern durability. I have several vintage watches that are barely even 'dustproof' and I need to be careful about how I wear those.

Beautiful watch. So much like the Submariner in every way. Amazing condition for 50 years old. Just goes to show regular Rolex service makes the difference . I bet the price on that watch is equal or more to purchasing a new Submariner. Nice review.

What brand and style/model is the strap on this piece? Obviously NATO, but I love the color combo and the fabric keeper but can't find that particular color combo anywhere with a fabric keeper. Anyone have leads on this?

Don’t forget that the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Mil Spec 1 was used by the US Navy’s Seals and Combat Divers from 1958 through 1966 when the name changed to Tornek-Rayville Mil Spec 2 (Tornek was the Blancpain US distributor for the ‘Buy American Act at that time).

The vintage Tudor subs are crazy cool watches. Definetly worth a future consideration. However, a Fortis Cosmonaut chrono with a caliber 5100 is on the top of my list right now (going to check one out next week!)
BTW, great strap choice. Can you imagine loosing a springbar and you hear a little splash whilst rowing gently down the stream... That would be a true nightmare.
Looking forward to the next one!
    Regards,
    Koen

Thank you Koen, you always make me smile.
I know EXACTLY what you mean about the Fortis, if you have a chance to get a 5100 based Cosmo, DO IT!!!!
Their prices are shooting up. Also they are getting hard to find, I was extremely lucky with mine.
OMG, that springbar nightmare sound AWFUL!!!!! LOL
      Best regards,

Around 9:32 you mention the ivory lume. Do you think this is original lume, or repainted? Generally, the 7928's I see have lume that is a lot more deteriorated and yellowish. Do you think this is the original to the dial?
This is what I'm more used to seeing:

if you measure it excluding nato it won't be as high and more accurate ;) therefore on any other option but nato it will sit lower on the wrist obviously. great watch.

T, I can totally relate to this video! I was in Army Special Forces in the 70s, wore a Rolex Sea Dweller "red letters" all the way through. I worked with SEALs with Tudors frequently. As a contrast, I was a security contractor in Afghanistan 2012-2015, wore a Rolex GMT2 all through that. SEALs I knew then were all sporting Suuntos.

Love the Sinn and the military history of the Marathon, Hamilton Field Khaki, and the pilot fleigers ... but since the Casio G-Shock are there really any analog watches that active military use?

    • @bruh_oly1370
      @bruh_oly1370 5 років тому

Yes these mil spec watches are lovely to own and admire historically. But are not prevalent, useful or current in today's military world. It's reflected by the forces choosing heavy duty digital watches for stealth and accuracy. Probably have a few warlords in Uganda wearing a Rolex sub or militia wearing Tudor vintage more like .

    • @bruh_oly1370
      @bruh_oly1370 5 років тому

CWC G10s , pulsar do a few analogue watches that I think may still be issued in British forces , possibly Marathon for the US. Still though I can't see a special forces guy or regular choosing a shiny metal watch with questionable auto movements for active duty . Then again I heard Seals , SAS pick there own so could be wrong
