Please be very careful with this method. I know of a few youtubers who have compromised the cuticles of their hair with continued use of this method. The baking soda can eventually raise the cuticle of your hair too much thus casing damage. Tangles could be from the raised cuticles. I just shampoo and condition my hair regularly (once a week) and apply gel on soaking wet hair. The more I styled my wash n go, the better it go. The hydration level of my hair increased and my wash n go got better and better. I don’t do all this extra stuff, just wash, condition, and style with gel on soaking wet hair. You are so entertaining! The Maximum Hydration Method seems like an awful lot of work just to get more curl definition. I think the Dickey method would have been much easier. I love your fro with or without definition. Thanks for being an influencer who clearly loves and celebrates her natural hair at this point of her journey and wears it a lot instead of hiding it under weaves and wigs 99% of the time. We don't have the same curl pattern (my hair is 4A/3C) but I am definitely subscribing because you are a true natural hair channel and I want to be a part of your journey going forward.
Your comment is so sweet. Wow, thank you for taking the time to make me smile. I got all the feels now 🥰 So many of you are recommending the Dickey method 🧐 It’s definitely on my to do list. 😁 Thank you for the suggestion m!
Hey, type 4 wash and goes can be so tricky to master. Trust it took me years of trial and error. From personal experience with my type 4 hair I know less works better for me. Shampoo, Deep Condition, Style with strong hold gel. Repeat weekly.
The adjustment process to a new method always varies from hair to hair.. We are experimenting like scientists! 😊 But...I try to stick with what works for me. 💁♀️
Yes! Experimenting is fun. I learn so much by doing new things. I’m interested in the science of haircare, so I’m the best guinea pig. As long as I’ve researched and know it won’t truly hurt my hair, I can always go back to my tried and true. 🤗
I spent like $60+ dollars on that Pomegranate hair line from Sally's when it 1st came out. It was trash for my type 4 hair. I ended up giving the entire line to my coworker. I was livid bc I couldn't find my receipt to take it back. Not to mention it gave me flakes. The only thing I liked about the line was the smell, which some folks would think is too much.
Welcome to high porosity hair. Everything you said at the end is exactly how my hair always feels. Stuck together, like something rubbed the strands back and forth, frizzy looking, not smooth, not soft, very sandpapery, and EXTREMELY HARD TO DETANGLE. They don't put my kind of hair on UA-cam though. I haven't found it yet! I always see a lot of people with low porosity hair almost complaining. They don't seem to understand - low porosity hair is healthy hair. The cuticle is laying flat, strand in tact & strong. I have to go through extreme hair regimen to combat my high porisity, high shrinkage 4c hair. Like using light protein reconstructor treatments with each wash; heat (heat training; and heat to detangle); and treatments similar to BKT.
I did this today and it took me 6 hrs but I completely eliminated the baking soda and added aloe juice; and to the cherry Lola I also added charcoal powder. My hair feels great but I would still only do this once a month.
You are humorous and have down to earth presentations. I appreciate that you're not trying to vogue, pose with sexy faces, and flirt with me through your videos. Lol I also have 4c with problematic scalp. Anyhoo, you have a new subscriber 😁
It came out amazing! But baking soda is so intense. I was just gonna mention the whole honey is a humectant thing lol Camilla rose curl milk and the curl maker gel is a great option *best done on soaking wet hair in the shower or try the mane choice gelato for a one and done wash n go. A diffuser is definitely a must it just makes life so much easier.
Hi honnestly you should try the Anthony Dickey method which is VERY SIMPLE and fast compare to this. You absolutely don't need all those steps and products. Plus he has a video on UA-cam where he shows exactly how to do it. I used to do it a lot when my hair was shorter and I am all about simplicity when it comes to my 4c hair. That's the only wash and go method which has ever worked for me and IT IS SIMPLE!
I do the LCO method with liquid (can just be the water from washing my hair), texture ID curling cream, and then oil. I then seal it all with wetline extreme gel. I get a lot of definition and I don’t have to refresh/moisturize my hair or anything for the week until I wash it again.
I’m hearing about this wetline gel so much. I think I saw it at target. When I’m done with what I just bought, I’ll check it out. Thank you so much for sharing your tips!
I just hollered watching this video!!! It reminded me of myself while experimenting with my hair!! If you haven’t (and not saying do this method again) Cherry Lola actually has a UA-cam channel with her tutorial. She is the creator of it and she gives the science behind the method. I’m scared to try it though 😂 (bought the ingredients, I ate them instead 🤷🏽♀️)
YOU ATE THEM?!!! 🤣🤣🤣 that was hilarious. Yes! I found her channel while doing my research. She hasn’t posted in like 7 years. 🤔 Her method is much simpler. Only three ingredients. This is a mix of her method and the caramel treatment. It’s very interesting.
Giiiirrrrrl, my husband has high porosity hair. It feels completely different than low porosity...he also doesn’t take care of it the way he should lol! But this experiment was eye opening. It will help me help others over time.
The Honey stuff by Camille is bomb. It does sound like soap but the moisture it helps retain to the truth! Also I love the honey miracle mask by TGIN. My poor hair loves it and I just don’t do it often enough. Lastly, I recently discovered Almond Marshmallow hydration serum by Eden body works, my hair loves their cowash and this serum does NOT disappoint in the moisture retention department. The wash and go was cute, it did what it was supposed to do but it’s all about whether or not you like it. ☺️
😂😂😂so sorry love for all the stress. What I did for my wash and go for definition was a clay mask( bentonite clay and acv) as a clarifier , deep condition with Aussie moist and ecostyler for style on dripping wet hair in pretty small sections. I started with cantu curl activator cream as a leave in but I forgot it after like 2 small sections 😂. So it was like a regular wash day. kinda. I liked how defined it was 😊. Plus I'm a student so I can't afford to be getting all of those stuff for the cherry Lola 😁😁. Your husband was so shocked at your curls😂.
OMG... This is so much work!!..🤣🤣🤣... I've done this cherry Lola treatment in my life, and I said never again. Going in and out of the shower multiple times... I hate that. But your results are definitely waaaaay better than mine. Mine ended up with a minichop because I didn't mix in the baking soda to a safe pH level.
Oh wow 😳 Yeah some of these ingredients can be harder. The funny thing is, the original Cherry Lola method is only 3 ingredients. They combined this and the caramel treatment for this method. All the food in the mix took me for everything I have. 😂
@@LaToyaEbonyHair 🤣🤣🤣🤣.... But experiments are great. You do something, of it works good for you, if it doesn't, you move on. I'd love to hear your final thoughts on the treatment, but please be easy with the baking soda... I can't take another big chop from you
I agree with your hubby. To me your curl definition is the bomb despite the process not being perfect. Before you buy any more products use what you have on hand. All three are applied to each section before moving on to the next. First a gel/custard, then Eco Gel and last a mousse. Looks like the "wash n go" has become the natural standard to aspire to and for many of us super coily girls, that is a frustrating process. I'm only 7 months into my bigchop journey and wrote it off as a total loss. But when miss Kimberly Cherrell did her 5-6 part video series a few weeks ago, I got inspired and gave it a try. I have coily, coily (4C) hair and got AMAZING super super defined results. The combo I used is super super crunchy. But it works and lasted me for two weeks. I am now on team wash n go. I used my combo after a regular shampoo + deep condition and still got AMAZING defined results. My raking combo is first Eco Olive, then Alikay Lemongrass styling gel and last using a mousse.
Wow that’s amazing!! 🙌🏾 I’m so happy you tried it. So many people (like me) would write it off and say my hair cousin to do it. It can be done!! That’s why I tried it. I proved my assumptions wrong.
This was so fun to watch! 🤣🤣 This is how I felt when I did the second big chop in 2015 and I didn’t even do the full cherry lola treatment. People were always asking if I just washed my hair. So I moved away from it after some time. But the clay washes and the use of hydrolysed protein instead of silk amino acids stayed until today. ☺️
I like your videos and your wash and go's look good on you. I wish mines did I just usually end up braiding it, my hair is not as long as yours so maybe I will like it out when it's longer, don't know. Glad to find someone who I can tell would get similar results as me. A lot of UA-camrs do not have type 4 hair like they're claiming, you Chezzi Duru and one other channel.
Stick with works for you! I love your videos. I stan for Mielle products but I don't like that custard either. I use the Ginger Moisture RX styling gel from Mielle on my 4C hair.
👏🏾 💯 Oh interesting. I didn’t know they had another one. I just bought Aunt Jackie’s flaxseed gel...I’m trying it out next time lol! I’m learning so much about my hair...but in all honesty, I love my simple methods best. Low time commitment and effective.
I loved watching your husband hype your hair up (as he should) 🥰 this routine was so elaborate, def just subscribed and gave a thumbs up. I don't understand how I'm just now discovering your channel.
Okay that’s was tooooo much work had me tired watching jk great video. But I’m like you I’m not bout to do this everyday and this is way to long. Who got time for this? Your hubby was funny love it!!!!
Thanks for doing all these tests for us! You should try using a pomade before u apply the custard. It works nicely to make your hair shiny, seal in moisture and stuff. Your videos are amazing. Love it!!
You can find a gently used over the head dryer for $30 or less on FB Marketplace. I never have to go to work w a wet head. My hair dries in 15 min w no frizz.
🥰😁🤗 Love your videos & high energy! Since time is of essence, I do this monthly clarify hair first, then allow hair to air dry some, then apply the ORIGINAL Cherry Lola Treatment (only 3 ingredients without 🥚🥑🍌 so no chunks!), then use deep conditioner with heat (I sit under a hair steamer), then finish with an ACV and rinse hair with cold 🥶 water. Process takes about 2-3 hours depending on dry time and length of mask application. You could then style as desired. It would also be fun seeing if your hair responds well to the new Jheri curl + gel way of doing a wash and go. I’m kind of terrified to do a wash and go again because it always leads to excess tangles and breakage. However, I may try the Jheri curl + gel method IF the ingredients don’t contain hormone mimickers. Take care!
Hey LaToya, you should try Aussie moist. The shampoo and conditioner. It gives soooooo much slip, less hair loss aaaaaand the price is reasonable($3-5) hope you get to try it soon. Stay strong! 🤗
The clay mask is suppose to dry on your hair... Then it works wonders, but it definitely has to dry up. Also try adding your leave-in after you have rinsed out the clay mask in the shower. Like, immediately after rinsing it out.
I'm a lazy natural so I'm gonna stick with my LOC method. And lately I'm not a natural who's too hung up on curl definition. I love frizz and volume for my fine hair. But your hair is gorgeous, I look at it the way your hubby does it's magical!! 😆😍 Also, you have the tiniest ears they're so cute!! Lol
I have 4c hair, looks just like yours. I use Photogenic. Makes my curls POP! Sometimes i pair it with Wetline gel and oil, but it's not necessary. But I use whatever shampoo/conditioner I pick up. Take a look at Photogenic
Heeey! 👋🏾 I think you suggested Photogenic on the last video too. Your comment has been saved and I can’t wait to look into it. Thank you for your recommendations!
Always looking for ways to get more moisture but wow that’s a LOT. I just got my routine time down from spending much of the day doing my hair...thanks for sharing!
yeah, thanks for persevering because i would have stopped after the banana mixture, too much work for me. I shampoo and condition/co-wash depending on the week, then deep condition, leave in condition, custard/cream and gel. The Mielle is great, but its not a gel, its for definition, shine and moisture, thats why it kept your hair shrunken, eco styler is a gel that would stretch the curls. I would do mielle then eco styler, so you get shine, definition, stretch and moisture, it doesn't flake if you use it properly too. I love all your videos, even though we don't have the same hair type so to speak, I am low porosity, high density too, but even still I just like watching your videos.
I did MHM for a little while years ago. My hair has retained moisture and stretch so much better every since then. Now I can just do the cherry lola and boom hair is moisturized and has a little hang time. I don't even need the conditioner
This was so entertaining! 🤣 But please note, the actual Maximum Hydration Method was somewhat abandoned after the clay. Well, actually with the clay, which you def want to keep on for longer. (The cola part can be nixed; the acv and clay cannot). But yeah, you pretty much abandoned the method with that combo of leave-in and styler. (??) However, if you ever (lol) try again, use the Kinky Curly knot today and custard combo. (Or Soultanicals' Knot Sauce + Aunt Jackie's flaxseed). There's a few sites that list the best products for MHM. And, like you state, the results of this are best over time. Daily? Nah but every 2-3 days, yes. And you def will not see the best results with only one trial/error kinda sorta attempt.
Girl,,,,our 4c hair is so...yeah!!! Okay, it took you 18 years to dry it and it was still damp!!! I can totally relate. Can you say, leave in conditioner, hair butter and a HEAD WRAP?!!! Lol🤣🤣🤣
That's how my husband is with my hair... He loves my natural hair. He thinks I'm so much more beautiful and sexy when I wear my natural curls and I love it💕💖.
Thanks for the video. I found it very realistic as to how much work some of these methods are. I always wanted to try it, but not any more. Very few ppl know what high porosity hair feels like any l think your comment at the end hit the nail on the head.
I appreciate your input. It’s pretty amazing how unique everyone’s hair is. I’m learning so much more and I’m thankful for thoughtful comments like yours. ☺️
Just do the clay and apple cider, never use metal when mixing ..... and u may like My Black Is Beautiful and TGIN products they are really hydrating, my daughter is 4c and it works wonders on her hair
Wow that was alot of work. But thanks for keeping me entertained. Love your spirit. Have you done the rice water rinse was looking at your playlist but did not see anything. See you soon, blessings
Got the stuff to make this today and I swear this it what I imagine myself feeling like 🤣🤣I’ve been sitting here for the past hour tryna convince myself to start.. then saw this video 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great video! Try using a natural gel. The gel makes all the difference. I use flaxseed and Uncle Funky's Curl magic. The first time I did Max Hydration Method, I did it for 7 days straight. Then after that just once a week. Doing it for 7 days taught me A LOT about what my hair needs to show definition. Now my hair is moisture trained and I only do the full method as needed about 2x a year. Also, I do my hair at night, sleep with it wet with the gel (covered with a plastic bag), then wake up, shake, and let it air dry all day.
Our hair is very similar. I don’t do the max hydration thing I wash it (head and shoulders shampoo) condition it for a few minutes (Aussie 7in1) apply the mane choice braid out glaze or the mane choice gelato and then the wet line gel and I use rubber gloves to keep it from being so frizzy and the prayer hands method and I blow dry it with a nozzle attachment that comes with it and it’s super defined and over time my curls stay defined even when I wash it and I repeat these same steps every week on Friday. Sometimes twice a week if i know I’ve been sweating a lot that week. I have 4c hair and my washday takes about an hour maybe 1.5 hours. I don’t deep condition because I get off work late and don’t want to spend a lot of time on my hair after work and sleep with wet hair. But yea girl i need two types of heavy duty gels for my wash n gos lol
Am I the only one who never got this kind of result from using the MHM? It really just made my hair soft, as if I got a really good deep conditioning. But as far as increased definition, I haven’t seen much.
I didn’t use baking soda. I used acv. After doing this for idk how many days, my hair did get lighter in color. Idk if that’s a bad thing, but I did like it🤷♀️
To simplify it, you can consolidate the process.... The cherry Lola part is cool....BUT just make a bentonite (aztec) clay acv mask, mix those two together, and you may use part distilled water with it if you don't want to go 100% acv, but MIX with a plastic or wooden spoon, metal denatures the full benefit of the clay.....then mix in hair oil like avocado or olive oil. I also liked adding peppermint oil and tea tree.... Once you mix thoroughly you can just put that in your hair for like 30 min to an hour and wash out, then lco or loc as you please. I know my hair can sometimes get frizzy from a lot of manipulation so I use a spray leave in and it still feels pretty moist days after. I got tired just from watching you do all this....and if that's the full max hydration method, the premise is lost on me. I thought it was just the aforementioned part above and I jazzed it up a little bit with milk instead of water and a little hibiscus powder for kicks.... I'm on day 3 post clay mask and my hair is vibing it. (I wore it 100% free form from on day 1, then faux hawked it so I could sleep freely on my satin pillow) Wish you the best!💞
I think it looks nice. My problem is that you changed too many variables. You tried the Max hydration and the honey leave in. Too much at one time to give a true Assessment
Tried an apple cider vinegar rinse for the first time and my hair is the softest it’s ever been. So I’m in love, terrified by the baking soda because I can’t go back to that life... but I bought all the stuff to start the max hydration method because I was so impressed by the apple cider vinegar rinse... 😅
I honestly think you didn’t need to do that first “situation” you can get maximum hydration with just the clay mask. But in the mask I used acv, aloe juice, and olive oil so it doesn’t harden for an hour. Baybeeee when I tell you. That is all you need with your hair routine!!! The clay mask goes first!
Honestly, the clay and the stylers are what mainly attributed to your results. I know I’m alone in this one, but I don’t feel like clay detoxes or conditions like it does skin, I think it just heavily coats the hair.
I appreciate your point of view. It does seem like things went south after the clay. There was optional oil I could have added, but didn’t. I wonder if that would have made a difference. I’ve also heard some add Apple cider vinegar too. 🤷🏾♀️ I’m new to DIY stuff. I’ve been enjoy the research though. ☺️
LaToya Ebony Not sure about oil, but there’s definitely difference with ACV. I tried just water and clay on my face for month-no changes. The first time I tried it with ACV I was looking at a new face lol something got ‘activated’
@@LaToyaEbonyHair I do about 2 tbsp baking soda diluted with a low ph conditioner and water. I let that sit on my hair, then I actually shampoo, deep condition and condition as usual. This changed the game for my super low porosity hair! I realized that I don't need every step to get moisture into my hair, and certain steps like the clay make my hair drier.
As former MHM guinea pig from years ago this is way too extra for a wash and go. As a coily girl myself the main thing I learned with the wash and go is to get the buildup off the cuticles open and seal with a decent amount of gel.
Yeah that’s too much. I’ve been a wash and go only forever - over 12 years and I’ve been through sooo many products and I always go back to LCG - kinky curly leave-in, Miellé Avocado Hair Milk, and then Kinky curly custard. I do that weekly and hydration all week. Try it!

My friend Jenn Jackson has high porosity 4c Hair. Check her channel out!
LaToya Ebony, thanks! I’m subscribed but didn’t know she was high porosity - her hair looks so soft 😖
Lol
I also have 4c with problematic scalp. Anyhoo, you have a new subscriber 😁
Heeey Stephanie!! 👋🏾 Welcome to the family and thank you for leaving such a sweet comment. 💜
whew chile... bless your heart. i would’ve BEEN gave up. the patience it takes.
🙏🏾 I hung in there for you all!
The support from husband was everything!
That was just too much work! Sorry you went thru that! You had so much patience!
Yeah, it was definitely a lot 😂
Yes please incorporate some aspects of this, your hair looked great
It came out amazing!
I’m all about simplicity too. You’re like the 5th person to recommend his method, so I’m taking notes. 🙌🏾
That was alot of work. It turned out pretty!
🤗 Thank you!!
A plus for effort. I would have stopped after the banana thingy stuff. Your husband is very supportive.
😂 That banana was getting on my nerves. And yes my husband is so sweet. He really tries!
Hahahaha I have naturally high porosity hair and that cricket analogy hit but hurt!
Your whole family is just adorable!
Aww 🥰 Thank you
Your makeups looks so good
Okay that is quite a lot of process but I must your hair gorgeous, I love it.
Awww 🥰 Thank you sweetie
Mielle curling custard with extreme wetline jel works magic
Mixed?! 🧐🤔🤗 Gotta write that down lol
All three are applied to each section before
moving on to the next. First a gel/custard, then Eco Gel and last a mousse.
Looks like the "wash n go" has become the natural standard to aspire to and for many of us super coily girls,
that is a frustrating process.
I used my combo after a regular shampoo + deep
condition and still got AMAZING defined results. My raking combo is first Eco Olive, then Alikay Lemongrass styling gel
and last using a mousse.
Wow that’s amazing!! 🙌🏾 I’m so happy you tried it. So many people (like me) would write it off and say my hair cousin to do it. It can be done!! That’s why I tried it. I proved my assumptions wrong.
You are so brave!!!! Your hair looked great in the end!
Girl! I thumbs up and subscribed just because of the work you put into this video!
HEEEEYYY 👋🏾 Welcome the the family Queen!!
@@LaToyaEbonyHair thank you!
The first time she said “Hey loves" sounds cool. 🤓
That was WAY too much work lol. And BTFOL at your husband saying a part of your hair reminded him of sideshow Bob 😆😆😆
🤣
I like your videos and your wash and go's look good on you. I wish mines did I just usually end up braiding it, my hair is not as long as yours so maybe I will like it out when it's longer, don't know. Glad to find someone who I can tell would get similar results as me. A lot of UA-camrs do not have type 4 hair like they're claiming, you Chezzi Duru and one other channel.
Loved your hubby's input
You’re very welcome Tiarrea! 💜
Idk if I ever said but the editing on this video is superb
I use ACV multiple times a week when I wash n go; it’s my favorite detangler before shampooing or cowashing.
Thanks for doing all these tests for us! You should try using a pomade before u apply the custard. It works nicely to make your hair shiny, seal in moisture and stuff. Your videos are amazing. Love it!!
Oooo interesting, a pomade. I haven’t used one of those in a few years. 🤔
I love your personality and your editing is fire sis.
This was exhausting to watch. I loved your hair and this video is hilarious. Can’t see myself doing all this
Girl, exhausting is definitely the word. I was SPENT! 😂
You can find a gently used over the head dryer for $30 or less on FB Marketplace. I never have to go to work w a wet head. My hair dries in 15 min w no frizz.
Oh wow, I’ve never thought to use FB marketplace for something like that...I’m actually rarely on Facebook. Great idea.
Sis this was highly entertaining. But that is as far as it goes for me. I appreciate your adventurous spirit. Keep doing great content. 😍
You should try sectioning the hair in two or four (or more) to help get to the scalp easier and also detangling.
Also, you have the tiniest ears they're so cute!! Lol
I’m the same way tbh. So happy you joined me today. Haha (ears) thank you!!
Glad I found you. Great tips can’t wait to try gel💯
Hi! Your hair looked great! The coils were defined and it appeared the style would last longer than the wash n go you did! Love your personality!
That's a lot of work, love the results though 😍😍
Loved it
Thank you Queen! ❤️
I love it...this was very entertaining...you look beautiful
Thank you Eva!! ❤️
I think a clay mask and AVC does similar things for the hair in terms of achieving the definition. It also seems easier and safer. Great video!
Lol🤣🤣🤣
I actually really did laugh watching this. You're dope❤️
I would’ve given up. U tuff sis that’s what’s up.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I aim to please. 😂
I love your scientific approach to the different combos! Really interesting ^^
I’m on the fence about rice water rinses. I have to do more research tbh. Thank you for the suggestion!!!
Omg new viewer and I’m cracking up you’re funny hahahaa and this was a lot of work Ima try a version of this
🙌🏾 Yes because the full version will give you a neck cramp 😂
Oooo I like your method!!
(I wore it 100% free form from on day 1, then faux hawked it so I could sleep freely on my satin pillow)
Wish you the best!💞
💕💕💕
Giving me mowry sisters vibes, i love it
Omg I love her vibbeeee❤️ so happy I found ur channel. I need some 4c tips. New sub thank you😊
Sis, when you do a wash and go, you can do the LOC method and use wetline extreme gel. Also try raking or shingling the gel in
A few of you have said Wetline. I’m definitely writing that down. Thank you!!
LaToya Ebony
Not sure about oil, but there’s definitely difference with ACV. I tried just water and clay on my face for month-no changes. The first time I tried it with ACV I was looking at a new face lol something got ‘activated’
LaToya Ebony
I like your research too 😊 it’s fun to see people do (relevant not crazy) things just to see what’ll happen.
Omg! I'm so excited to watch this!
Thank you so much for the suggestion. Don’t mind my jokes. I loved trying it out even though it exhausted me. 😂
@@LaToyaEbonyHair lol! It's time consuming so I like to modify it
Oh really? What do you do instead? I think we’d all be interested to know. I’m curious!
Oh wow! Thank you for the tips!! I see that you have a UA-cam channel. I’m going to watch your video on the method. THANK YOU BEAUTIFUL!!!
Try it!
