RIP Professor Chris Vadala the drummer was only 16 years old James Bradley Jr when this recorded. Saw Chuck many many times over the years. Eastman School of Music Rochester New York the guitar solo by General Grant always special when he played that part and the bass by Charles Meeks soulful. Chuck always make us feels so good.
GROWING UP IN ROCHESTER NY (Chuck Mangione’s home town), THIS TUNE IS THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY CHILDHOOD!! I HEARD IT EVERYWHERE I WENT!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG!
Back in those days, our small tv station began his daily transmission at 3.00pm, they played this song at the beginning, I had to be in front of the tv...running from school just to listen to this beautiful son...what a wonderful days they were.
Alejandro Morellon pienso que no se le dio mucho más reconocimiento del que se merecía... uno de los grandes del jazz de esa época al igual que el gran Gato Barbiery
@@julianavadala4765 oh my goosh!!!! Vadala's daugther here!!!! A true Sax genius. Did anyone see chuck mangione at some music awards for this tune and he was high on something..........the steady cam was trying to film him and he kept turning away from the camera and playing something that was not this song..........the band was looking at him like WTF...........and he made no sense when talked to..........he was fried on something that night.........anyone remember that or have a recording ???..
I don't think so, I've seen a number of these live performances, they're all at this tempo. They get bored doing the same song over and over, sometimes out of nervousness or they think it will add more energy to the song. In any case it ruins the groove and goes by too fast to really sink in the feeling.
Play a song a million times on tour and the tempo will speed up...this even happened to Miles Davis..check out his tempos on studio recordings compared to live versions (so what)
This is extremely up-tempo compared to the original. But I think it might be designed that way due to Grammy time constraints and just the overall excitement of the event.
They're performing the Grammys. It's like the Oscars, where your speech is time-limited. This was Mangione's "speech", and he had to rush. Rush-job or not, it was brilliant.
That was my reaction as well. But far be it for me to criticize which I'm not! My guess is along with yours is that they played It Up Tempo due to the experience and time constraints. They definitely kept that up-tempo constant. Which is a testament to how good these guys are.
Back when the Grammys presented and awarded actual musical talent.
What a BEAST on the guitar!
Damn that guitarist shreds!
I loved this song as a 10 year old kid, and I still love it at 50
loved this song as 5 year old kid, and still love it today at 41

Chris Vadala - a wonderful friend and colleague - we played together often in DC and the mid-Atlantic region. Miss him dearly.
@@joshuabayerjazz Chris is my Dad! It is so heartwarming to see these comments honoring his memory.
CHUCK MANGIONE,CHRIS VADALA AND GRANT GEISMANN GENIUS.
this is probably one of the best songs ever made
sin duda.. es una de las mejores canciones del mundo!
GROWING UP IN ROCHESTER NY (Chuck Mangione’s home town), THIS TUNE IS THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY CHILDHOOD!! I HEARD IT EVERYWHERE I WENT!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG!
I grew up in Syosset, Long Island, this song totally reminds me of driving in the car with my mom in the early 80s
A truly amazing this is that this was a genuine pop hit in 1977-78. Better musical times, that's for sure.
King of trumpet chuck mangionie
That Guitarist is absolutely shredding it. I think his name is Grant Geissman, but either way he is killing it.
Yes, that's Grant Geissman. Awesome player.
Song was released in December 1977 a classic for sure....
Admirable una melodia que jamas pasara de moda viva el jazz desde el Salvador
Give It All You Got is another favorite of mine. I remember it playing on the 🚗 📻 they day my mom picked me up from school (kindergarten 2b exact).🤔
What a tight band. Great playing. Soul arches across the room!!
THIS SOLO GUITAR IS THE BEST

Wow, I have loved this song every since I first heard it back in 1979. Awesome!
Thanks a lot Chuck, from México, greetings!
Have loved this for all this time.
groovy arrangement 🔥
I’m just going around listening to all the guitar solos in the live versions of this tune
Omg!!!!
Still feels so good in 2021.
What a great song! I remember this from high school back in the 80s.
Absolutely!
Everytime the guitar solo starts i just start air guitaring and making my "musician's face". I cant help it.
My mom picked me up from kindergarten & this was playing on the radio.

Chris Vadala in the original recording, got loose with one of the BEST all time sax solos ever. Still a top-3 all time jazz song.
So who's the tall guy on Magione's right if not Vadala?
@@stevenseagal8390 That's Vadala to his right! ^ may have been referring to the recorded solo vs this live performance. Vadala is my Dad!

There's no place for me to hide
The thoughts of all the times I cried
And felt this pain
That I have known
Because I nee-ded just to hear
That special something
And then one day
You just appear
You said "Hello"
"Let's make love along the way"
Your name's music to my heart
I'll always really love you
It feels so good when I'm with you
I can't believe you love me too
With you it feels like it should feel

Chuck made music fun, caus he had so much fun while making it...
Dude...who the fuck is this awesome guitar player?????
Grant Geissman, look at some of his more recent work
@MadTuber31 yeah! this song has a very memorable tune. don't forget to check out some more chuck mangione!

You couldn't have put it in better words. An incredible talent!
When a musician is soloing, the camera MUST focus on them. These camera men...
Tal vez en alguna próxima vida pueda tocar la guitarra como Grant Geissman 1:20-2:10
Grant es el Grande de la Guitarra
i assume they were probably under some type of time restraint which could have caused the rushed time
I don't think so, I've seen a number of these live performances, they're all at this tempo. They get bored doing the same song over and over, sometimes out of nervousness or they think it will add more energy to the song. Why is it always just a touch faster on tv???
The dudes are human, and theyre playing for a few million people, and they're a litttttle excited about it!
Play a song a million times on tour and the tempo will speed up...this even happened to Miles Davis..check out his tempos on studio recordings compared to live versions (so what)
Who's on Bass?
Charles Meeks , he disappeared after the Mangione band, haven’t seen anything else from him
Why was he playing so fast???
The Tuxedo rental shop/dry cleaners wants their prom clothes back.
Solo para conocedores ....eso es lo que puedo decir !!!
Anyone else notice the trouser meat packed in that purple suit & have their childhood ruined? Just me?
What year is?
DAMN...Chuck dance better than Michael Jackson, James Brown and Chris Brown 😭😭😭😭
no comments yet!!??
40 years later....nobody knows how to play an instrument.
Here's your comment! Happy?
not my fav version. prob under some pressure to perform in a certain amount of time or sumethin. its hard being an instrumentalist. IJS
Yes, really rushed. I love the album version, nice and mellow.
My first thought too. I love the groove tempo on the album. This still sounds good but just too fast.
This is extremely up-tempo compared to the original. But I think it might be designed that way due to Grammy time constraints and just the overall excitement of the event.
This song is cheesy af, but damn that guitarist absolutely ripped!
Playing too fast than the original one, seems they're in a hurry!!
They're performing the Grammys. It's like the Oscars, where your speech is time-limited. This was Mangione's "speech", and he had to rush. Rush-job or not, it was brilliant.
That's the explanation I was looking for among the comments! Right answer! Thanks!!
Chuck can play whatever speed he wants to he’s a legend
That was my reaction as well. But far be it for me to criticize which I'm not! My guess is along with yours is that they played It Up Tempo due to the experience and time constraints. They definitely kept that up-tempo constant. Which is a testament to how good these guys are.

Cuando los grami era tributo a la música no esa basura de bad bunni
Too fast, slow down, takes the feeling out of the groove.
Buckley's angel brought me here. I can officially say, I've hated this song for 39 years.
Drummer on coke. Slow down.
That hat... what a terrible hat!!!
The hi hat or chuck’s sex invoking hat?
More like iconic hat.
