According to some videos I have watched you lose 5-10% performance depending on the game if you run the GPU at PCIe 3.0. I would say that isn't a huge difference but, when you are already at the bottom of the performance scale it could make the difference between being enjoyable and unpleasant gaming. I am not quite sure why they limited it to PCIe x4. Surely that can't have saved them much money. Certainly not enough to make it worth losing 10% performance in the target market.
Just thought of a idea for a video or 2: pairing a CPU & GPU with same or similar numbers, so like a Ryzen 5 5500 paired with a RX 5500XT or a Ryzen 5 3500/3500X paired with a RTX 3050?

why not 10100f + gt1030? 10100F are going for around 6500 while a gt1030 should be around 7k-8k, 5600g's gpu performance is around a gt1030, and 10100f should be good enough for almost all the games
I think all the APUs will not support PCIe 4.0 .... I suspect the integrated Vega graphics limit it to use PCIe 3.0. even the 5700G does not support PCIe 4.0. But the 4100 is a strange case because it is among the few AMD CPUs w/o integrated graphics that don't support PCIe 4.0
TBH, i don't know how much i would be willing to spend, just waiting to grab good deals. Otherwise id be happy to grab a 1030 if its priced around 6k. I'd just rather wait till some prices normalize. As for pcie 3.0 vs 4.0, it doesn't make much difference even if the GPU has 8 to 16 lanes so its mostly fine.
@@BertieJasokie you can get a 3050 around 30k, why not check offline market? they might be cheaper there, you can also get a 6500xt for around 18k but that will require a PCIe gen4 system and LGA1700 mobos are still expensive, tbh 10100f + 3050 sound better than 12100f + 6500xt, you will also get DLSS and NVENC support, also look out for 6600 if they are on the same price tier as the 3050

I think the point of the 6400 is that you can slap it into a HTPC/old workstation without changing PSU Except for the fact it has no encoding so a bit useless for a HTPC and the 4x lanes make it bottlenecked on older prebuilts
Basically, this is a Series S PC with the price of Series X - I know, versatility and all that, but if you buy it primarily for gaming, it's a hard pass. Anything below 12100F/6600 is not worth it and even that is still quite inflated - I'm talking about the GPU prices, of course, all other parts are just fine. The Ryzen 4100 reminds me of the FX 4100 - you're better off avoiding it altogether.
If all you do is gaming... Anyways if you already have a decent PC spending 160$ on an upgrade is still cheaper than buying a 300$ console.. I'm glad that prices at least are back too realistic market values on some cards.

I'm considering a low profile RX 6400 with an i3 12100f for a low profile, mitx Linux box using VirtualBox for retro rigs without taking up much room on my desk. Granted it'd bottleneck the processor normally, but the extra cpu capability would be for the overhead from running compatibility layers and the vm's (would only run one vm at a time). Thoughts?
Sounds like a good idea. The only worry I guess is that I don't know how the performance would run on VM and I doubt there's any videos for that. That said, the 12100 is a really strong CPU if you only need 4 cores, 8 threads.
Why not test in the cheapest PCIE 4 system that makes sense (16GB RAM, 120GB SSD, 1TB HDD)? Also, AM4 reminds me very much of LGA775: both support a wide range of processor models.
for 50 bucks more you can get a r5 5500 and a 6500xt. the cpu ugrade alone is worth it. another option is the i3 12100f wich costs the same as the 4100 but performs way better and has pci 4.0. the only downside is the fact that mainboards are more expensive for the intel chip.
Be sure to test out the GTX 1630 when it comes out! Unlike the mythical GT 1010 this one got announced by Nvidia. I still find that overkill cooler on the RX 6400 amusing. Performance isn't bad on this system, but it could be better, and too pricey. I guess you can call it a disappointment new budget build. Still, it's one of the cheapest new options if one insists on new hardware and only AMD.

Secondhand PC build guide for AMD platform:
Motherboard, try to look for B450, or B550 if you're lucky with PCIe Gen 4.
CPU, Ryzen 3300X is still way faster than the one in this video. And is cheaper on 2nd hand market.
GPU, RX 5500XT 8GB. Seriously, this is a beast and actually faster than 6500XT.
Yeah 3300x can be difficult to find though, so maybe a 3600 instead depending on where you live
yeah but people need to make sure the cpu supports 4.0, the 3300x does but the 5600g doesnt.if they dont know this they will be running 3.0 despite the board supporting 4.0
@@kyles8524 that's exactly why I still recommend RX 5500XT. Not only it's faster than 6500XT, it's originally PCIe Gen 3
@@ClayWheeler 5500XT is gen 4 but being on an 8x bus its only 4-5 fps difference 4.0 vs 3.0 on average opposed to a huge hampering on 4x bus the 6500xt has if its ran on 3.0. but performance wise they are about the same on a 4.0 bus. 3.0 its like a 25-30 fps difference favoring the 5500xt cause of the 8x vs 4x bus. you might be thinking of the rtx 2000 series or something cause thats gen 3
A better pairing for the 4100 would be any PCI Gen 3.0 GPU that isn't a complete potato. Like a GTX 1650 or better. RX 580 or RX 570 would probably be much better for this CPU in an older B450 motherboard.
Just got a PC with a 1070 and a 3570k for 250€. Four threats is a bit low, but for that price there is nothing better.
you got a bargain couple of months ago you would of paid that just for the gpu lol
@@ant5963 more than that. I'm in the states. Nv. Sold my 1070 ti for 450, bought a 2080 for 600. This was not long ago, at the height of the price craziness. Things have come down a lot. 1070's were selling 300-400 easy recently
I have this CPU paired with an RX 560. I gotta say that I'm kinda impressed. I'll be upgrading to an RX 6600 later down the road though.
loved the video mate! I would love to see some B-Roll footage of the build/test bench with the parts on!
Nice video, as usual. Thanks for your work.
i3 12100F is the perfect combo for the RX 6400. Its waay faster than the Ryzen 3 4100 and is priced $20 LESS on Newegg A pcie 4.0 system is really all the 6400 needs. H610 motherboards are also cheaper than B450 boards. Noone on a budget should even waste their time looking at Ryzen 3/5 CPUs youre far better of going 12th gen i3 or i5
Here in the UK, you could actually put together a 6500xt + 12100f build on a h610 board for £500. Probably below that with used parts, not too bad tbh.
Those fh5 results are shockingly similar to my 1050 ti and 3770k
Yeah it’s such a well optimised game
1050 ti is equally terrible compared to the 6400
@@TheTarkovSh00ter When that GPU was released again?
@@TheTarkovSh00ter ?
great video man! thanks! that combo in a really small case could make a good console like pc too.
Can't wait for a GTX 1630 review when it's available
According to some videos I have watched you lose 5-10% performance depending on the game if you run the GPU at PCIe 3.0. I would say that isn't a huge difference but, when you are already at the bottom of the performance scale it could make the difference between being enjoyable and unpleasant gaming. I am not quite sure why they limited it to PCIe x4. Surely that can't have saved them much money. Certainly not enough to make it worth losing 10% performance in the target market.
Yeah and some games it’s a much bigger difference. Other games don’t care at all but it is hit and miss, and hard to gauge until you try each game
It's a laptop GPU on a desktop board, and those need less PCIE lanes, so it doesn't have more than 4x.
I'd bet you'd lose performance when the card is struggling most. 10% off the max is unimportant but dipping below 30fps would be important.
Just thought of a idea for a video or 2: pairing a CPU & GPU with same or similar numbers, so like a Ryzen 5 5500 paired with a RX 5500XT or a Ryzen 5 3500/3500X paired with a RTX 3050?
My friend has been running a 5600X and 5700XT. We joke we need to fins some part labeled 100T at some point to complete the trio.
what happened with your car channel?
Hey man just here to say that the view disance in fortnite doesnt actually effect players so you dont have to put it on epic becouse it wont make a difference. All it will do is render trees and buildings faster.
Hope this helps
Would you recommend a 4350G? I mean it's around the same price as a 3200G at ₹15,000/- compared to a 5600G at ₹20K and 5700G for ₹27K. Seems like better choices practically as motherboards for am4 are abundant. While lga1700 mobos are still steep.
why not 10100f + gt1030? 10100F are going for around 6500 while a gt1030 should be around 7k-8k, 5600g's gpu performance is around a gt1030, and 10100f should be good enough for almost all the games
I think all the APUs will not support PCIe 4.0 .... I suspect the integrated Vega graphics limit it to use PCIe 3.0. even the 5700G does not support PCIe 4.0. But the 4100 is a strange case because it is among the few AMD CPUs w/o integrated graphics that don't support PCIe 4.0
what's your budget? Why not look into gaming laptops? Trade in your old machine. There's ones for 50k to 55k
TBH, i don't know how much i would be willing to spend, just waiting to grab good deals. I would go the intel route if i could get a RTX3050 for under 30k or even a rx6400/6500 for under 15k/20k otherwise go the igpu route with a cheap mobo and wait for a good RTX deal in the future. Otherwise id be happy to grab a 1030 if its priced around 6k. I'd just rather wait till some prices normalize. As for pcie 3.0 vs 4.0, it doesn't make much difference even if the GPU has 8 to 16 lanes so its mostly fine.
@@BertieJasokie you can get a 3050 around 30k, why not check offline market? they might be cheaper there, you can also get a 6500xt for around 18k but that will require a PCIe gen4 system and LGA1700 mobos are still expensive, tbh 10100f + 3050 sound better than 12100f + 6500xt, you will also get DLSS and NVENC support, also look out for 6600 if they are on the same price tier as the 3050
Perhaps you'll get to see how it compares with the upcoming "rumored" 1630
The only thing I think the RX6400 is good for is if the low profile version is paired with an 2nd hand office PC. But still these old and not so old office pc's usually only support PCIe 3.0
Yeah that's really all there good for, if you can support a full height card your best going for something else. But for SFF pcs this is great, it performs better than a gtx 1650, which costs about $300 for the sff version. I've seen some people say that it performs about equal to the 1650 in pcie 3.0, which still makes it worth the price. If I could find a 1650 for msrp I'd buy one instead though
Is it better than an older gen setup such as a GTX 1070 with an old Intel 4790k?
The GPU is way better, so no. CPU performance difference with the 4100 isn't much, gets beaten by the 10100F which is a tad better than your CPU on paper.
You're fine for some time still, and for upgrade i would look into alder lake once raptor gets fully launched (as prices will be discounted) or AMD 7th gen Ryzen. If you have the money, even go for raptor lake.
Good old garden hardware preview!😍
And now that they cost pennies they are actually a decent entry pairing.
can you do a video of rx 6400 emulation with xenia (red dead redemption 1).
you'll need atleast 6c/12t cpu to run it smoothly

Get 12100f instead of the crappy 4100 and if u have budget and pcie 4.0 get a 6500xt atleast or a 3050 if possible
If ur budget is tight then a 6400 can do the job
@Rafał Pawłowski ofcourse it is, i HAVE been following this channel for over 3 years now and it is among the few channels that i regularly visit
And i mean no one is dumb enough ro pair a 4100 with a 6400 unless you get one for 70$ lol
i would not get a RX 6400 regarding the 6500xt is just 20€ more
I think the point of the 6400 is that you can slap it into a HTPC/old workstation without changing PSU
Except for the fact it has no encoding so a bit useless for a HTPC and the 4x lanes make it bottlenecked on older prebuilts
Great video. Does the 4100 overclock?
Ironically intels budget options are a better paring for AMD gpus then AMD budget options.
Used 3100 £65
Used RX480 4GB £75

3100 is an awesome CPU, quite underrated.
@@cimosaron3679 Very good for those on AMD platform and wanting an upgrade without getting an intel.

AMD are making so many mistakes releasing this CPU as pcie 3.0 it's literal garbage compared to the i3 12100f
RX 6400 and RX 6500 the GPU's no one asked for but the ones AMD gave us.

why not try GTA IV Patch 4 with DXVK and as well make sure to disable Hyperthreading somehow GTA IV gets a slight boost when it's not on

Intel's pentium g7400 with rx 6400 isn't a real bad pair. Considering you can build a system with this pair for 500 bucks or less, while getting smooth results in most games at 1080p. It also makes more sense as building with this pair enables a full road to the whole beast alder lake lineup.
The g7400 has hyperthreading but since physically it only has 2 cores, it glitches when a million soldiers are throwing spears at you. Still you'll be fine with games like metro exodus or any other competitive game or triple a games which aren't that core heavy.

Honestly with used prices near me right now, these make no sense. I picked up a 3600 and a 2060 for about the new price of these plus tax. And some of Intels 10th gen stuff has been stupid cheap. my mc server has a 10100 I grabbed for $40. These budget items make no sense with the used market prices just collapsing.
