@@cai0 I’m having an issue with my driver’s side door and this trick didn’t fix it! My window rolls down but when you try to roll it back up it rolls all of the way to the top and then automatically comes back down halfway!! It just started doing this on my 2018 Subaru Outback. Wondering how you got yours fixed?
I was skeptical, but it worked. My 2013 Forester driver window stopped working. Figured I was going to have to tear the door apart and troubleshoot the problem. I hit UA-cam to see the procedure, and came across your video.b Figured it could hurt to give it a try. It didn't work at first, but I went through the cycle several times without any luck. Thought what the heck, might as well try it with the drivers window. The second time I held the switch in the down position, there was a small "clunk" in the door. I then held the switch in the up position for a good 10-15 seconds, and would you look at that...the window worked again! Thanks for sending me in the right direction.
Had this happen to my Legacy after a battery change at the end of a long ass Monday. I cant express the relief that clear, helpful videos like this can bring. Thank you very much.
We had a problem with the driver's window. I watched this video all the way to the end, went outside, and just reset the sensor and this procedure worked like a charm. Thank you very much. It's even more fun when your adult child says they've reset the window motor sensor. It's more fun when you quiz them and say, "Did you watch all the way to the end and then do this exact procedure??" When they tell you that it won't work---and then you do it right in front of them----it just goes to prove that Age and Wisdom will beat Youth and Vigor every time. Experience comes from watching the video all the way to the end to understand how to diagnose issues and attempt the fix first!
Thanks so much for posting! I just did it in the parking lot of my grocery store and it worked like a charm! I can’t imagine what the dealership would have charged me to do the same thing… 🎉🎉🎉
What a great person this guy is to spend the time to make a video to help others out. Gives me hope that this crazy world still has a some really decent people still in it. You saved me a trip and spending money to go to a stealership to be raked over the coals for a 10 second fix that only cost me a couple minutes to find on youtube. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
it worked, 2011 forester driver side window was not working. after several attempts of trying the passenger window to reset it, i tried the trick using the driver side back door and after that the driver window started working again. you rock!
My passenger side window wasn't working on the driver's side or the passenger's side. Tried this trick and it didn't work. I then realized I had the child lock button pushed and it was actually working on the passenger's side. Re-tried the steps and now I can use the driverside controls. Thank you so much!
The front passenger side window on my 2018 Forester stopped working. It stopped receiving instructions from driver's side, and from passenger's side switch f it rolled down and up in two-inch increments. Was ready to go to dealer until I saw this video. I followed it to the letter and all is now good. It was interesting to hear something inside the handle going "click-click-click" as I reset it. What mysteries there are in the modern electronics that make cars work! I think we'd all be better off if windows were still hand-cranked. Thank you for posting this clear and effective solution to what is probably a common problem.
2013 Subaru Forester, drivers side window not working. Finally followed al directions to the T. Car running, passenger side window switch, down, hold 5 seconds, up, hold 5 seconds, heard a click. Drivers side window works! Thank you.
LOL my driver side window (2012 Outback) was acting up but all I did was watch this video while sitting in the car and the window corrected itself. You scared it straight. Thank you.
The dealership had told me that I needed to come in and have the module reset at the dealership. You just saved me $68 a bunch of time. Thank you. I'm canceling my appointment.
Had a problem with my 2019 Outback driver window. Tried this fix using the driver window switch. It worked! Must admit that panic sets in when these things happen. Images of; going to the dealer. and an expensive repair bill comes into one's imagination. Thanks for the simple and cost free fix for this "problem"!
Thank you so much, it was going to cost me $200 to fix it as I was told it's the window track and with your help got it done for free and took all of 2 minutes.
I rarely use the passenger window. Tried it the other day and it wouldn't budge down using driver or passenger button. Battery had gone dead back in early December. Tried your reset trick, had to do it several times, then it worked. After several ups and downs it started doing the go up then halfway back down trick which I had encountered a year or so ago but never did anything about. Gave it the WD-40 treatment as you suggested in some comments and that solved the halfway back down problem. Thank you so much for giving us an easy solve and saving an expensive trip to the dealership. Note: I did mention the halfway back down problem when I was at the dealership some time back and was told it was probably due to some dirt in the rails but they did nothing about it. Guess they were out of WD-40 that day.
Man, after months of procrastination I ordered the regulator/motor assembly to stumble on this video.. did this and it started working again. Hoping to return the part for my money back.
Fixed my 2019 Outback after the battery had run all the way down (interior lights left on) but MUST wait the 5 seconds after rolling the window down then again after the window is rolled up. Another video talked about just holding the button down 3-4 seconds while the window rolls down then up. That did NOT fix my Outback. It was the 5 second wait after that fixed it for me. Also my front passenger window worked fine after I recharged the battery, it was the two back windows that I could not roll down or up. HINT: I wrote this procedure on the back side of the cover of my manual. This way I have it with me no matter where I am when it happens again. Thank you for a great video!!!
Thank-you! Believe it or not I watched at least 2 videos before this one, your video was the one that helped with my passenger window issue. I had to replace my battery and was having an issue with operating passenger window from drivers side. Thank-you Again😄.
This is the only video on the subject that I ever want to see again! I clicked thru a half dozen before checking my history (Aug 2019) & saw this was the last video I watched on the subject lol
thank you for that bit at the end saying to do it in the passengers seat for ANY window. everything else i read wasnt clear on that and, with your video, i was able to fix it!
Oh my god i thought i was going crazy. Did this on my '10 legacy (liberty here in australia) and got all my windows to stop being stubborn. Absolute legend
This worked. Passenger window stopped working from driver's control after battery had died. Pass window would work only from passenger's control. This procedure fixed it. Thanks!
Something you said at the very end many other videos neglect to mention. This also works if you have your DRIVER window stuck. Had to do it twice but worked!
AWESOME!!!! Thank you VERY MUCH! I first followed the "Groove Honda" video explaining the reset. It didn't work. THIS video had one major difference - holding the switch up/down for an additional 5 seconds. BINGO!! (2015 Subaru Outback)
Thanks! spent over $100 at dealership being told it was a part issue the first time it happened after my battery gave out happened a second time and this worked perfectly! Thank you!!
Thanks for the post! My drivers window wouldn’t go up and it’s 35 degrees outside. Followed your instructions and it went back up. Still seems to be an issue so I scheduled a service appointment. At least it’s up!
I had my spark plugs replaced and the next day I noticed that the passenger window would not go down. I was ready to call the dealer to get the switch replaced but thanks to this video I don't have to. Thanks.
Have a 2013 Forrester. Driver side window just quit. Nothing. Thought plastic gear was chipped. But your quick fix it session reset the actuator. Took 3 times to get it to reset, but if you follow the directions exactly it will reset. Thanks Steve L.
I just had the same problem with a 2019 Outback. All three non-driver windows were not responsive to the driver side controls. I ran the procedure recommended on the three windows and it worked. Everything is back to normal. Thank you.
Man I wish I had your luck I have tried it on passenger and rear driver but it won’t reset. Maybe because my driver side front is stuck in the down position?
Fantastic! My 2019 Subaru Outback Ltd 2.5 started up 1 year afte i got it where the front passenger window would go up with the 1-click function but would go back down 3/4s soon as it hit the top. Took it to the dealer and they said some debris might be stuck in the window track but they couldn't fix it. This worked perfectly. Thanks so much.
Driver's side window would only go down (or up) a few inches with each click of the button. I did what you suggested and, hey presto!, it works! Thanks!
Thank you so much. My driver window kept opening back up and then the passenger one wouldn’t even open. It was so frustrating but this fixed it for me!
Also sharing that this fixed my issue. I was going to take off the door panel to test the switch but now I don't have to. My situation started one cold morning with a sluggish battery. The driver window would roll down all the way but would only roll up 1" at a time. I couldn't control the passenger window at all. I followed the video exactly, on the passenger side first. Then I did it to the driver window and both are now working
Holy cow. Thank you! Our Crosstrek 2020 had an issue with the DRIVER window going up, and quickly going down again , not closing. (A stressful situation. You can't leave your car unattended with an open window). Tried your trick with Passenger window side. Then just briefly pressed the Driver window button Up and window closed properly again!
@@HONDACARGUY last time we probably had a very small piece of debris trapped in the crease of the rubber (upper part of the window)...at least that it's what we assumed. We initially believed it might have been due to the sensor detecting something... But this time after cleaning the rubber we still had an issue with the window. I found your tip helpful. Merci beaucoup
Thank you, changed my car battery in a 2015 Outback and exactly that window had the same issue. Your solution worked perfectly and saved me a trip to the dealer instantly!
That's whacked that you have to reset the driver's window from the passenger's side. I've heard it all. By hey, it worked. Thank you for the video. Someone should mention to Subaru to add this in their owner's manual for a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek
My 2020 Forester's driver side window was doing the thing where it would stop as if something was stuck and roll back down partway. The 5 second down trick worked on the first try. Glad to see Subaru has been on top of this issue 🙄
You are rocking my world today... Thank you! Subaru Outback Limited 2020, driver side window recently acting up. Would go down but on the roll up, only half then three quarters, but not all the way up. I had already scheduled a service appointment, but think I am going to cancel it now. Clearly, this is a fix, but is it permanent? Should I fear a continuous issue? Anyone have a history they could share? This guy really knows his stuff!
Thank you for the kind words, it will last until the windows lose memory or the tracts get dirty. I recommend cleaning the window tracts regularly and using a dry spray lubricant to help them not stick. Subaru windows are especially sensitive to resistance because of kids and dogs possibly being in window when it goes up. If dirty when the window is rolling up and it sees resistance it can cause all sorts of issues.
Your amazing. This works on a 2011 STI. Thought my rear window motor was broken on one side. Did this step by step and works just great now in the rear.
Thank you! Went to the dump this morning and the window on the driver's side as stuck 3/4 of the way up this worked great for my 2018 Subaru Forester! ❤️
Great video. My issue was with the driver's side window where it would only go up about 3/4 of the way and then go back down. One try using the passenger's side control and it fixed the driver's side.
This worked excellent. Just got my battery changed and my passenger/backseat windows would NOT roll down. So I held the button down to my window on passenger side: 5 seconds downs and 5 seconds up. Then after I held down again and the window rolled down. Moved over to the driver side and the button worked. I had to do the same to both backseat windows. I have a subrau outback 2018 AWD 3.6L. Thank you!!!
I’m going to try this tomorrow, my driver side window isn’t budging. The dealer tech said I had a dirt build up around the piece that the window slides up into and it creates this 🤦🏻♀️. Apparently, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about 🤣😂 I will let you know how it goes after I try this. Thank you 😊
@@HONDACARGUY it didn’t work Turned car on Put passenger window down held button 5 seconds then held the button 5 seconds on the upside No bueno Question after each 5 second do I let button go and start with the “up” action and let go then hold 5 seconds
Thank you for this accurate and concise video. I just replaced a window switch for this on one of our used cars and the rear windows still would not work at all from the master switch. Thanks to your handy explanation the windows now work and I can send this junkyard part back! I've never seen another vehicle where the windows won't work at all unless programmed, nor have I seen one require programming directly at the door in question. Brands I'm certified in simply don't have auto function until the limits are set, and it can be done from the master switch.
Another fix that's not in the Manual and should be! Thanks very much, now my '18 Outback windows work fine and I don't need an expesive trip to the dealer. 👍
Thank you so much! Worked perfectly! I was also having an issue with the auto up down feature on my driver side not working. Thought I'd give the same thing a try on that side and it fixed it as well!
Nice! Great fix after replacing the battery last night. Also needed to reset the tail gate action after consistent beeps - sounding like rear door was not closed. Just needed a reset like windows. All easy to do on your own
Hi Hondacarguy I have this issue with my Subaru XV but the passenger side doesn't work at all. I will try your reset method to see if it helps. Thank you for your page, very helpful.
I bought a 2017 WRX a few months ago and I had the exact same problem with my front passenger window. I came across your vid and just tried it. Worked like a charm! Thanks man, and great vid! 👌✌️
Thank you so very much. That worked perfectly on my window. I had that exact problem and was ready to take it into a repair shop. You just saved me a lot of time and money. Very much so appreciate it!!!!!
2015 Forester, driver side window doesn't work (window is rolled up, but not rolling down) , tried your method 5-10sec up/down. Fixed the issue, after 2h the same problem occurs. I checked the switcher with a multimeter - it was good and I think the actuator is good because it worked couple hrs ago.
This worked, thank you. Mine was the driver’s side window malfunctioning and I reset from the driver’s side (before I read the part about using the passenger side window no matter which one was messed up). It worked anyway. So relieved
Thanks for the vid. My drivers window has been doing the halfway down thing. It's really annoying. I'm going to try this in the morning when I change my oil.
Nice fix. Drivers window was my issue. Other videos said to reset with drivers side switch, that didn't work. Your procedure did!
Roush AWESOME! Glad I could help. Thanks for watching
HONDACARGUY Yes I have the same problem
Wife has a 2018 legacy.. Windows have been acting up since the first day she had it. Probably my third time watching this video 🤣
I was able to fix the rear window this way, awesome.
But my driver window has the same issue, and this didn't fix it for me :(

Wow. I was so bummed I was going to have to replace my window switch on my 2018 Legacy 3.6. Worked like a charm. Thanks!
You’re welcome
Super helpful! I pulled my engine and could not figure out why the window wasn't working! Thanks
Glad it helped!
Thank you! Went to the dump this morning and the window on the driver's side as stuck 3/4 of the way up this worked great for my 2018 Subaru Forester! ❤️
Glad it helped
Great video. My issue was with the driver's side window where it would only go up about 3/4 of the way and then go back down. One try using the passenger's side control and it fixed the driver's side.
Glad I could help
This worked excellent. Just got my battery changed and my passenger/backseat windows would NOT roll down.
So I held the button down to my window on passenger side: 5 seconds downs and 5 seconds up. Then after I held down again and the window rolled down. Moved over to the driver side and the button worked. I had to do the same to both backseat windows. I have a subrau outback 2018 AWD 3.6L. Thank you!!!
You’re welcome! So glad it worked!
Literally just used this method on my 2019 STI - worked a charm! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
I can't believe how easy this was. Thank you!! To think, I almost paid to have the dealer do the same thing.
You’re welcome! Glad I could help.
Thank you 😊
Ok let me know if you need any more help.
@@HONDACARGUY it didn’t work
Turned car on
Put passenger window down held button 5 seconds then held the button 5 seconds on the upside
No bueno
Question after each 5 second do I let button go and start with the “up” action and let go then hold 5 seconds
Thanks! Saved me a 45 mile round trip to the dealer.
You’re welcome
Thank you for this accurate and concise video. I just replaced a window switch for this on one of our used cars and the rear windows still would not work at all from the master switch. Thanks to your handy explanation the windows now work and I can send this junkyard part back! I've never seen another vehicle where the windows won't work at all unless programmed, nor have I seen one require programming directly at the door in question. Brands I'm certified in simply don't have auto function until the limits are set, and it can be done from the master switch.
You’re welcome! Glad I could help.
Thank you!!! We just fixed my daughters window in a parking lot because of your video!
You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help.
2022 Outback Subaru worked…did this myself and it worked, Thank you
You're welcome, glad I could help.
I want to thank you so much. Super easy fix and the windows are working as they are suppose to. Thanks have a blessed day.

Thank you so much for posting this! The windows on my 2014 Forester have been driving me nuts.

Just used the video to fix a 2020 forester. Thank you, worked like a charm. Thank goodness it was warm out and I found this video 😁👐🏼
You’re welcome and I’m glad I could help.
Awesome and you’re very welcome
Nice! Great fix after replacing the battery last night. Also needed to reset the tail gate action after consistent beeps - sounding like rear door was not closed. Just needed a reset like windows. All easy to do on your own
That worked perfectically! Thanks for saving me time, money and frustration!
Preston Williams you’re welcome glad I could help. Thanks for the kind words
Hi Hondacarguy I have this issue with my Subaru XV but the passenger side doesn't work at all. I will try your reset method to see if it helps. Thank you for your page, very helpful.
If it doesn’t make sure the window lock isn’t on and if you have any other issues let me know.
I bought a 2017 WRX a few months ago and I had the exact same problem with my front passenger window. I came across your vid and just tried it. Worked like a charm! Thanks man, and great vid! 👌✌️

@@HONDACARGUY I have another question…My touchscreen on my 2016 Subaru outback freezers. Any suggestions on how to fix that? Thank you!
@@onemillionnotes you can see if there is an update available next time you go to the dealer. Otherwise no not really unfortunately
Clean the run channels then add some dry silicone lubricant in the channels. See if that helps
This worked, thank you. Mine was the driver’s side window malfunctioning and I reset from the driver’s side (before I read the part about using the passenger side window no matter which one was messed up). It worked anyway. So relieved
You're welcome, glad I could help.
It worked!! Saved a trip to the dealer. Thanks!
You’re welcome, glad I could help
Whoa!! Thank you! This worked like a charm. You gotta love YT for stuff like this.
You’re welcome! Glad I could help.
It's in the Owner's Manual as well. But UA-cam is way faster than combing through a 600 page book.
Amazing hack ❤. You saved me so much stress, anxiety and $$$
Glad I could help
Thank you for this. I thought it was fixed once already but it’s doing it again! This is a good reminder step by step

Mike Brooks awesome glad I could help! Thanks for the great feedback
Thank you so much for this! Thought I would need to replace my driver side switches as the rear windows wouldn't work from it. 2016 WRX STi UK 👍

Thank you. That was easy. Yes, please put more videos about subaru outback 2017. Thanks again
Thanks for the vid. My drivers window has been doing the halfway down thing. It's really annoying. I'm going to try this in the morning when I change my oil.
Glad I could help,
Should work!
I read something that said to do it from the driver front. I'll try passenger front first.
