  • Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.
    Special Thanks to Ben Jo
Sogdian holds a unique position among Eastern Iranian languages due to its historical significance. Historically, it thrived as perhaps the most successful Eastern Iranian language, acting as a lingua franca along the Central Asian route of the Silk Road. Beyond trade, it played a crucial role in the translation of religious documents, including those of Buddhism and Christianity. However, despite its prominence, Sogdian suffered a decline following the Arab invasion of Central Asia, diminishing in influence from the late 8th century onwards. By the 10th and 11th centuries, Persian began to replace Sogdian, relegating it to the peripheries of Sogdiana. Despite its varied dialects, some well-documented and others less so, Sogdian's legacy endures through its preserved texts and its closely related descendant, Yaghnōbī.

@@vvertyqvverty8784 that's the point... Central Asia is the contact point between Persian and Russian culture. I mean it is an Indo-European language that makes contact / transition in some level with Slavic languages (and it also has similarities to other languages, like Greek)
Words like: mother, father, daughter, numbers (2, 3, 4, 5...), star, mountain, warm, name, to die

At the time when Sogdian language existed there was no such thing as Russian language and probably no Slavic languages either at all, maybe just Porto Balto-Slavic, I noticed that the word “door” in sogdian sounded almost the same with Russian word for “door”, but that has got nothing to do with Russian language influence on sogdiana, as Russian language nor Russia (Kievan Rus) were not existing at the time of Sogdiana, instead the similarities are through common Indo-European roots.

@@leandrojulian7155 Similarity between Russian and Sogd is due to the common ancestry of Balto-Slavic and Indo-Iranian languages cca 5000 years ago, not due to their first contact cca 150 years ago (that's when Russians reached that region and colonized it 5000+ kilometers from the Russian homeland).
