The Kamakhya Temple at Nilachal hills in Guwahati, Assam is one of the oldest and most revered centres of Tantric practices. The temple is the center of the Kulachara Tantra Marga and the site of the Ambubachi Mela, an annual festival that celebrates the menstruation of the goddess. Structurally, the temple is dated to the 8th-9th century with many subsequent rebuildings-and the final hybrid architecture defines a local style called Nilachal. It is also one of the oldest of the 51 pithas in the Shakta tradition

    Hey Frenchy,
You asked what's fancy about Fancy bazaar. Fancy bazaar actually has a bit of a dark history and source of name. The actual name of Fancy bazaar is 'Phansi Bazaar'. 'Phansi' means both the hanging noose and the act to hang to death. That came from the Jail nearby where prisoners used to be publicly hanged in the bazaar during the Raj. Officially that market is still known as 'phansi' bazaar, but most people now call it Fancy bazar.
I hope you will travel through rest of the state and see all that it has to offer. Our state is really beautiful and culturally vibrant. You will miss a lot if you left after just after visiting Guwahati.

This temple is of goddess parvati and her nine avatars this is the main temple and there are nine more temples spreading accross the hill. It would have been better if you had gone to the pandit counter . They would have explained you all about the temple starting from the origin . These pandits are highly intellect and some of them are fluent in english . Next time please visit it and am sure you will really love to know about the temple and its origin .
