Fun fact (and maybe little known), if you HOLD that button which creates the bubble from the gum you can freely control the bubble on screen and collect many Zs that way until you let go of that button or Bart gets hit. With this method it is waaay easier to collect the Zs at the right placement
I rented Bart's Nightmare for SNES from Blockbuster back in 1992 and absolutely HATED it. It was just confusing and in hindsight, I realize it was because there were no instructions included. Many years later, I got to understand the mechanics of the game and appreciate it more. It was still hard as f*ck, but I don't hate it anymore! 😂
There should be a special level in hell for people who didn't return video game instructions at rental places. Same for the people who don't return their shopping cart / buggy / trolly into the corral.
Skinner bending over to tie his shoe front and center is definitely one of the more sadistic choices in Virtual Bart. It's a reference to the show where Bart throws Lisa's prize-worthy tomato at Skinner, so it's so tempting to do.
Yeah I just wish more developers would remake bad games and fix them like ff2 pixel remaster (turning off trap door encounters and attacking with double shields to buff ultima by quadrupled weapon/magic boost) and romancing saga 2 (so much quality of life either better acting than trials of mana with no multiplayer to take away).
By modern standards? There was only one kid I knew who had Bart's Nightmare game. He swapped it for a time with another kid once. After that kid played it he came to conclusion that it's crap by the standards of any time period, including Precambrian. But the funniest thing is that kid who owned BN skipped almost 2 weeks from school pretending to be sick, in hope that another kid will forget they ever traded and he could keep his game instead of Bart's Nightmare. Needless to say the other kid wasn't very happy about that. 🤣 Me personally, I played both of them much, much later on emulators... I was so happy that despite my curiosity I never had them as a kid, I would've probably ram my head into a screen.
Modern standards are the worst of both worlds; They’re unreasonably high to the point that they’re used to harshly judge things from a bygone era for elements that make them unique, and they’re disappointingly low to the point that people who try too hard to adhere to them end up with something that’s tame, boring, and not as fun as what came before.
@@imfsresidentotaku9699 I don't know what you are talking about. Some of the best games of the modern era trying to emulate retro in a various degree, and triple A releases are getting critique and flopping. And although some people are overreaching to find the next target for their angry style reviews, some of the games are just not that good and had an appropriate reputation as far back as the time of their releases.
IMO, The tomato throwing mini game in Virtual Bart is so good it could’ve been its own, full game with some tweaks. Spinning the wheel and getting literally anything else was such a bummer
These two games are very central to my childhood, I distinctly remember a particular summer in the 90s where I was off from school and would rent these two out randomly over the months I had to do nothing but play games
I think a big part of the disappointment with many of the Simpsons games was that most people I knew were wanting and waiting for the Konami arcade beat em up to come to console and instead we received overly complicated, awkwardly controlled mini games, they do look nice though. Thanks for the video Jank, or is it Janck? 😃
I had Bart's Nightmare for the Genesis around 1996 and tried to beat it (without the instructions) for many years. No can do, the Indiana Jones level I could never beat. Had no idea you could crack the whip or pan the camera over to make Maggie's pacifier miss.
I never liked these games and barely understood Bart's Nightmare, so it was interesting to see how it's supposed to function. Throwing tomatoes at Skinner was always fun as a kid though.
the whole idea and concept of bart's nightmare made me way more interested in playing it than it probably should have. maybe because i had lots of nightmares myself
Thank you for making this, I played this so much as a kid and I had completely forgot about it until seeing this. Crazy how we can forgot something and then instantly have a massive wave of memories come back after being reminded of it, like hearing a song you forgot about.
My relationship with all Simpsons games from the NES and SNES eras is one of wanting to love them because they were graphically great to look at and I was a fan of the show, but actually hating them because of how crap they were gameplay-wise. I did have a friend who was just a savage at Bart's Nightmare on SNES. I never quite know how he did it, but he got really good at it over the course of two weekend rentals where we all slept over at his place to watch him beat it.
I rented both of these on SNES, and later acquired a used copy of Bart’s Nightmare, so, sadly, never had the quality manual from buying it originally. I loved these games, despite having trouble with a lot of the different game modes. In Virtual Bart, I remember getting fairly good at the Tomato throwing game, tho I don’t remember if I ever beat the egg level. As for Nightmare, I remember the virus level being the easiest and never managing to get to Godzilla Bart stage 2. (And probably stage 2 of what you called Idaho Bart. Is that really what the manual calls him? I never knew! Googling the name just turns up a congressman from Idaho named Mike Simpson…) It’s awesome to hear someone finally talk positively about these two games that I grew up loving as a kid.
I had Barts Nightmare growing up for the Snes, when climbing the building as Bartzilla people throw Sega Genesis's out the window trying to knock you down, I always thought that was funny.
I remember feeling very accomplished when I beat Bart's nightmare. My favorite part of the game was the blowing up the viruses as well. Is a very easy level but I just thought the graphics of that level were so beautiful and so cool and so much better than anything else out after comparing it to Bart versus the space mutants on the NES. I never got to play virtual Bart but it was a game I always wanted it's just it was never in stock at the rental place and I didn't have money to buy it
after 20 years, i finally know how to play this games. now hurry up with that time machine, mr. scientist. i need to impress my old school with this knowledge.
The mini games were not particularly good by any standards, but they became strangely addicting when they add up to an ultimate goal. The sum was greater than its individual parts.
I just subscribed I knew right away I would like this channel it usually will take me a couple episodes because just because one episode is good that doesn't mean I like the rest of the content but I know I'm going to like this content
It's too bad Williams had such a bad experience on Bart's Nightmare because it really does feel like his work. Kind of a Simpsons-themed variation on Alley Cat.
Drop the street part and the whole game would have been much more enjoyable. But the devs knew that while fun, their mini-games would have made the game last 20-ish minutes so they padded it with a long and hard segment to give the illusion of content.
I owned Bart's Nightmare. The game would have been much better if Windy World had less crap flying around and quicker spawn time for homework. Or they could have just made the whole game into a Bartman Shmup.
Nightmare is a bit unfairly maligned but the game generally works and is pretty fun. There’s a lot worse especially licensed games. Virtual Bart is just a stripped down sequel to Nightmare and only one of the mini games is fun
I always loved Bart's Nightmare and was disappointed to see how many people hate it. Also, it seems no one ever mentions that you can control the bubble in the hub world by holding the button and using the d pad to direct it around and catch more Z's.
The first time I played Bart's Nightmare, I hated it. The graphics were dated at that point, the sound was terrible and the game was just weird. I found myself renting it a few more times as I figured it out and finally enjoyed it quite a bit. Never could beat that mini game with the collapsing floor tiles, but got a good score regardless.
The bartzilla stage was copyied for the two 1998 Godzilla the Animated series games on game boy colour yet made way worse some how as for both it was the entire game.
All they had to do was have instructions on screen , because fighting out what to do with an unforgiving game is criminal .!.. Devs don’t realize nobody like a game that the ai goes too hard and give the player no sort of power. This game is set on die .! And if they had made it easier and accessible to the player it would have been super fun. . .
I gotta hold off on watching this one until I've finished my next essay on Simpsons Hit & Run, I'm going back and playing these as part of the essay and don't wanna copy your notes. Totally gonna watch it after I promise!
I owned Bart's nightmare for the Genesis, some crackhead in the hood sold it to my dad for us. I was really excited about the game because it was a Simpsons game. It's the worst game I ever owned and one of the worst Sega games I ever played. Bart's nightmare is straight booty cheeks. I'm sure there are worse Sega games, I just haven't played one worse than this yet.

Don't have a cow, man.

haha that is awesome. I need to take my own advice and read the manual more carefully, I see this in there now!
Yeah I remember only liking one or two mini games when I played as a kid. And I HATED the dinosaur level!
Edit: I forgot these were separate games.
What about the Genesis version is it better or worser?
Same. I only got Fs
There should be a special level in hell for people who didn't return video game instructions at rental places. Same for the people who don't return their shopping cart / buggy / trolly into the corral.

The idea of Springfield becoming 'The Road Warrior' after a meltdown at the nuclear power station is so 90's cool.
By modern standards, Bart's Nightmare might not be considered very good, but I have great memories with it. I think it's appropriately surreal.

Krusty's Super Fun House is by far the best of the 16bit ones. Reverse Lemmings was a fun idea.
Yes! No one I speak to remembers this game.
I loved that game. I found out about lemmings years later and was like OMG it's like Krustys Fun House!
IMO, The tomato throwing mini game in Virtual Bart is so good it could’ve been its own, full game with some tweaks. Spinning the wheel and getting literally anything else was such a bummer

I always thought of Bart's Nightmare as a reversed clone of Paperboy, where you have to collect paper instead of throwing it away.
5:15 I like how they made a "hey man" with FM synthesis in the music!
I personally prefer the Bart Simpson focused era of the Simpsons over the 95% rest of it being focused on Homer
Virtual Bart was one of my favorite games as a kid. Had it for Sega Genesis. The baby level and the egg throwing level were my favorites.
Thank you for making this, I played this so much as a kid and I had completely forgot about it until seeing this. Crazy how we can forgot something and then instantly have a massive wave of memories come back after being reminded of it, like hearing a song you forgot about.
Is Bart back from the ham factory?
"Marge, I have some terrible, BONE CHILLING NEWS!"
Don't have a EEEEEE man!
Bart's Nightmare is fun. One of my favorite Simpson's games. Virtual Bart Is a cool concept but it's just hard.
I had bart's nighmare on the genesis as a kid, I remember not understanding it at all and it being hard as hell, but I thought it was super cool

Simpsons games were always pretty damn good. I actually beat Bart Vs The World.
I rented both of these on SNES, and later acquired a used copy of Bart’s Nightmare, so, sadly, never had the quality manual from buying it originally.

If you hold down y while you have a bubble on screen you can control it even keeping it on screen the whole time if you're skipled enough
I love your channel
Thanks! I am hoping to, yes :)
pausing at 10:10 to ask this: Did Bart just sing the intro to the classic Super Mario Brothers song?
after 20 years, i finally know how to play this games. now hurry up with that time machine, mr. scientist. i need to impress my old school with this knowledge.
The mini games were not particularly good by any standards, but they became strangely addicting when they add up to an ultimate goal. The sum was greater than its individual parts.
All the Bart/Simpsons nes games were hard. I remember renting Bart's nightmare and not getting very far.
20:35 Giving burst more work? Sign me up! XD
I remember renting both of these as a child...great weekend rentals! I LOVED throwing tomatoes ....so fun.

The first level of Space Mutants was quite clever, buying things from the shops to solve the puzzles etc. Shame the rest of the game isn’t like that.
Love this. 5:25 Always got trapped in here 😂(kindergarten me).
I remember renting Barts Nightmare for the SNES once. Didn’t know what I was doing
Let's get this channel to 100k subs.
Loved Virtual Bart. Had Bart’s Nightmare. That was my nightmare
I had some simpsons dos game on our pc and it was hard AF.
This is the best Simpsons game channel on youtube
Drop the street part and the whole game would have been much more enjoyable. But the devs knew that while fun, their mini-games would have made the game last 20-ish minutes so they padded it with a long and hard segment to give the illusion of content.

subbed, great video
Nightmare is a bit unfairly maligned but the game generally works and is pretty fun. There’s a lot worse especially licensed games.
Virtual Bart is just a stripped down sequel to Nightmare and only one of the mini games is fun
43 old here once I got the hang of them I liked them
Virtual bart I enjoyed more bunch of mini games
I always loved Bart's Nightmare and was disappointed to see how many people hate it. Also, it seems no one ever mentions that you can control the bubble in the hub world by holding the button and using the d pad to direct it around and catch more Z's.
I bought this after christmas with basically the only christmas money i had. Its super frustrating and was not good lol
Awesome video. Full of nostalgia!
Have you done a video on Virtual Springfield for Windows 95 yet?
Thanks! Not yet, I definitely want to play that one sometime
The Splashmore intro has me wigged out by the clearly naked kid on a man's shoulders.
Missed the Itchy and scratchy level though.
Wow the bart games totally were terrible rentals thanks for playing these thru
They were good games. People don’t like them because they were hard af.
The first time I played Bart's Nightmare, I hated it. The graphics were dated at that point, the sound was terrible and the game was just weird. Which version is worser?
Thanks!
Hey Rob, thanks so much for the tip!
The bartzilla stage was copyied for the two 1998 Godzilla the Animated series games on game boy colour yet made way worse some how as for both it was the entire game.
i was never able to beat the indiana jones type level.
I'm not sure I agree the Mad Max game on Virtual Bart looks better on the SNES just because Mode 7 is used.

I ate butterfinger BBS because of the simpsons.
wait...... theirs more to the game than the street? the paper is more than just a prop????????
I believe you can hit skinners ass, and not get in trouble.
this sounds like a trap, haha
@@BurstError when he’s walking your not supposed to hit him, unless he is tying his laces.
Idaho Simpson LOL
the link elephant has to have some subtext to it Barney being an alchy and all
Why can't you just tell us what the manual says about the solution for the Temple Level?
I really didn't care for this game. I loved thead max riding stage only.
you should do krusty's funhouse.
bro how is a child supposed to figure any of this shxt out? 😂
Game still gives me a headache.
I owned Bart's nightmare for the Genesis, some crackhead in the hood sold it to my dad for us. I was really excited about the game because it was a Simpsons game. Virtual bart was a great game. The rest trash.
Yes, although I remember it being very, very hard.
Bart isn't a good character.
No, these games were 💩.
