      You are welcome! I just wondered, could you tell me is it okay to mix watercolor brands together? I'm thinking of getting some Sennelier tubes and also some Windsor and Newton tubes. Different formulations so I wasn't sure?

      Yes darling you can definitely mix, some brands have more transparent watercolors than other so you will see when you mix :)

    Once again, a gorgeous piece. I am so excited to try this painting! Will you let me know a good substitute for Antwerp Blue? Maybe French ultramarine, or Prussian blue? I don't have Antwerp, so please help me find a suitable substitute. Thank you for all your help. You are such a beautiful person. I love everything you share with us. Love, Jess xox

    • @mariamorjane
      @mariamorjane  7 років тому +1

      Thank you so much Jessica 😘Your very welcome. You could use French Ultramarine but if you have Phthalo Blue that would be good too 😋You don't have to have the same colors as long as they go well together 😃🎨you can always do a test mix on a piece of watercolor paper you don't need, just to see how the colors mix, often what I do.. one of my most fav mixes is Turquoise and Viridian Hue 😍or Purple lake and Antwerp blue 💕

    Hydrangeas are my favorite flowers! Have you seen strawberry hydrangeas ever? They look like dessert to me lol. I also love the white-green ones...
    Where do you buy your hot press paper? Do you use arches? What brand? I'm waiting to get better before I try hot press but from what I hear and see the two different papers are completely different to work with. Also I've been hoping this for a while but could you please teach us color theory and how to mix? So much of my stuff comes out cartoony....

    • @mariamorjane
      @mariamorjane  7 років тому +1

      Hi Sophia :) I do have a video on color blending :) ua-cam.com/users/mariamorjane also I love Arches Papers the most and even this in this video I have painted on Fabriano, I got stuck on Arches for good ;) I was testing then Fabriano Hot Pressed Paper and I'm definitely not a fan of it, it dries super fast and the surface feels quite different... not what I like, not like a cotton paper. For beginners I recommend Cold Pressed, cold pressed is easier to paint on. It has a slight texture so it's a more forgiving paper, Hot Pressed is smooth so it pushes you more towards details.. either way I highly recommend Arches Cold Pressed 140lb or HP 140lb.. any Arches papers are good. thank you :)

    This is beautiful, I love your work! I noticed that in the other hydrangeas video you wet the paper first before applying the first layer of paint , but in this video you uses the wet on dry technique for the first layer. How do you decide which technique ( wet on wet or wet on dry) to use and does it make any difference in the results? Thanks

    • @mariamorjane
      @mariamorjane  7 років тому +1

      Hi Lisa, thank you so much and good observation 🤗In my other video I was painting on cold pressed watercolor paper, because it has a texture I feel like it's more suitable for wet on wet, the colors bleed easily and it's a different way of spreading the paint because of that. This one is on hot pressed by Fabriano Artistico and, most of my paintings are on hot pressed. Hot pressed is great for details. I like my paintings to be more vibrant so that's one thing about painting wet on dry, you get the color more intense this way, but also on hot pressed, depending on what brand you are using and what weight - I mostly paint on 140lb by Arches, so the paint doesn't bleed as much as I am working a little bit harder to get that blending but in my opinion paintings come out more vibrant on hot pressed and that's why I love hot pressed. There's a difference in Arches Hot Pressed 140lb and 300lb. Even 300lb is hot pressed, the smooothest in watercolor papers, this one feels a bit rougher maybe like a sand paper which is excellent for painting flowers, because that tiny sandy paper like texture helps paint to bleed, I have a painting video it's ua-cam.com/video/3MDSJjmpBBk/v-deo.html or "Watercolor Desert Fox and Hawaiian Flowers" I also have a video on wet on dry vs wet on wet :) ua-cam.com/video/uQbl8C9kNRk/v-deo.html

    mam, tell me a simple trick to blend watercolours smoothly

    • @mariamorjane
      @mariamorjane  7 років тому

      Hi Ashish, when I do it in a landscape I paint in layers so with next layers I go over the paper very lightly, barely touching with my brush, just adding more color. Here's it's more about timing, but the surface has to be wet so the colors blend in easier. thanks!

    All hot pressed paper I have seen has a smooth finish.. cold is rougher..

    • @mariamorjane
      @mariamorjane  7 років тому

      Hi Linda, yes you are correct. Hot pressed is the smoothest of watercolor papers. Cold pressed has a texture and rough is the roughest of all watercolor papers, it has a tooth to it.

    could you explain a bit more the difference between 300 LB paper and 140 LB paper? why is 300 LB better for flowers? Thank you!

    • @mariamorjane
      @mariamorjane  7 років тому

      Hi Raffaella, 80lb, 90lb, 140lb, 156lb or 300lb, 400lb papers, what this tells you is the thickness of the paper, so 80lb or 90lb paper is very thin, 140lb and around that are thicker, most common watercolor papers. 300lb or even 400lb tells you that the paper is really thick. It's nice but also more pricey. When I say 300lb is easier to paint flowers on is because when you compare Arches papers Hot Pressed starting 90lb then going to middle section 140b and the thickest 300lb, considering the fact that hot pressed is the smoothest of all watercolor papers. The hot pressed 300lb as smooth as it is, it has a sand paper feel to it. What it does is it helps the paint bleed. You can control the bleeding and it benefits you when painting flowers vs when I paint flowers on hot pressed 140lb it doesn't bleed the same way, 140lb hot pressed is better for detailed work and requires a little bit more effort to get the same effect, which I normally achieve by adding layers. I hope this makes sense. I feel like every paper has its purpose :)

    • @musiea
      @musiea 7 років тому +1

      Thank you for taking the time to reply me !!!! :D :D I am not quite sure about the bleeding but I guess I will have to test it out myself then I will understand what you are saying! So far haven't used anything other than 140lb cold press... time to try something new!! :D :D thank you again

    • @mariamorjane
      @mariamorjane  7 років тому

      oh yea.. the bleeding part haha yes, you do need to see it by yourself to understand. It's the most fun part I think haha, it's when you pre-wet a section and then apply paint with your brush (with water) to the paper - just leave a drop.. just watch the paint spread.... that's bleeding haha

    Your statement about using hot press paper it is rougher, is confusing. I thought hot press was smoother than cold press or rough.

    • @mariamorjane
      @mariamorjane  7 років тому +1

      Hi Linda, I'm sorry if this was confusing to you. Have you ever had or touched Arches 300lb Hot Pressed Watercolor Paper? Hot pressed is the smoothes of all watercolor papers, that's very correct. But the way Arches Hot Pressed 300lb is made it feels rougher from regular 140lb hot pressed, it feels almost like a sand paper a bit, I don't know how else to explain it other than it is different from regular hot pressed 140lb or 90lb (90lb is even smoother from 140lb). When you touch each of these papers you will be able to see the difference. Because Hot Pressed 300lb feels a bit rougher/sand paper like it helps the watercolors to bleed easier which is why I made a point over there. When painting on 300lb it was very easy to paint flower petals. It not a common paper to buy because of its price but I absolutely adore it. Hope this makes sense to you. Thank you

      @lindacasazza1937 7 років тому +1
