Another beauty! I have tried hot press paper but never 300 lb. hot press. On my to do list. I'm interested in botanical painting and I think the hot press helps with capturing more detail. At least that's what I've been told. Thank you for sharing your talent!
good day Maria! hope you realize how good your tutorials are for us that are trying. always pleasure to watch colour, blending, composition. your replies to comments interesting. hoping your weekend was good. take care.

May I ask what you use for reference, you are fantastic, I love everything you 🎨 paint, water color is my favorite medium, I have tried oil, acrylic and pencils, but always return to water color. Thank you for sharing your talent 🌹
Hi Anne-Marie Thank you so much🌊😊💕🤗It really depends on what I am painting, sometimes I don't use anything just my imagination and sometimes photos I took myself etc
Good day; i am,french, I love all your paintings ! It is wonderful🥰thank you very much ( sorry i don’ t speak english very well) you havé much talent I love !!Anny
hey Maria amazing work ... absolutely loved it ... I tried out the night sky paintings and it's not as good as yours but I can always dream 😅.....lots of love xo
WOW. I just fell in love with Caput Mortum after trying your tutorial. My peony came out looking like one big red mess, but Caput Mortum color sets everything off. My Quin Red looks different than yours, so I tried Carmine. Another beautiful color for flowers. Every manufacturer uses different pigments with the same name, so it can get overwhelming. I was jus surprised to see Caput Mortum in my Sennelier set and had to try it out.
Hi Bethany, thank you so much for your comment. Caput mortum violet is one of my favorite pigments right now and I use it/abuse it haha but yes, different companies create different shades of quin red etc but you don't have to match any of my colors, as long as you like the ones you have.. you can use here any pink or red, and caput m.v. is a great addition to those no matter how pink or red your pigment is :)
Thanks so much! Such a wonderful tutorial. I have never used gouache before. Instead of gouche could I just use the lifting up technique or masking for the white? One other question I had is does gouache white make the colours duller or the painting dull overall? Can we retain the transparancy of water colours even after using gouache over it?
Hi :) In this video I haven't used any gouache, it's just transparent watercolors: quinacridone red and caput mortum violet. But in general I do use sometimes designer's gouache - color permanent white which is an opaque watercolor. It depends on a video you are refering to. In some like "Watercolor jellyfish" you don't have to use an opaque white like I do but just like you said, you can lift up the colors or use regular transparent watercolor white. I don't think the opaque watercolor white I use (designer's gouache) would make colors dull. It's definitely creamy, cloudy like watercolor. If you paint one of my night scenes with Milky Ways or "Watercolor Northern Lights" you may need an opaque watercolor for the Milky Way part but I have a video where I just lift up the sky and didn't use it. There's ways around it. You can still have the transparency of watercolors even after using designers gouache white, it all depends on how much you are using. And basically yes, if you don't have it you can lift up the colors, the effects are going to be different but you will get your result either way :)
Maria Raczynska Thanks ever so much for taking the time to clear my doubts on gauche. I love your videos and the way you teach. I'm going to try the peonies but using whatever colours I have. will let you know the results!
Hi ,Maria😊 I really enjoy watching this video.🌸💟 The colour I lovvvvve and the flowers are beautiful so beautiful.🌸💟 love it so hard. Thanks Maria for showing and sharing your wonderful work also really helpful🌸💟🌸💟🌸💟🌸👍am sure am the 1st like😉also I can see this paper excellent. . .
That's awesome 💕😀🌸thank you so much for liking, watching and all your kindness 💕💕I am also glad that you said you were able to see this paper very clearly, that's what I want to make sure the difference in papers is visible enough 🤗😀🌸💕🌸Have a wonderful Sunday!!😍
Maria, is there a brand of watercolor paint you prefer over another? and if so why?. I cannot belive you are self taught and only been painting watercolor since 2012. beautiful work. If I can suggest something to think about and experiment with. I thought to myself what would happen if I painted a watercolor using the old flemish technique of doing a grisaille first, I did it using sepia and paynes grey as a underpainting color. The results will amaze you.
Hi Michael, thank you so much!! that's really flattering :) I prefer using watercolors out of tubes, that really makes a difference in my opinion. I'm still testing out different watercolor brands but will be sharing some more of that soon on my channel :) I don't think I have ever seen the old flemish technique, it sounds really interesting. I am going to have to check it out as I like exploring new things :) thank you so much!
Hi Michael, thank you so much, I did look up the painter and I couldn't figure out how he does the background but then I thought to myself.. this is actually similar to my style of painting... because when I paint animals, I always create dark background first and then work with white gouache to bring out the light, I often mix white gouache with other colors so I have these opaque lighter colors over darks.. instead of creating a background: sepia, payne's gray, I do that on the actual animal .I looked up the grisaille technique and it works when painting with opaque watercolors (gouache) thank you so much for your comments. Btw whenever theres a link or names mentioned in comments, it gets flagged so these comments don't get posted but I still saw and read it. thank you!
Thank you Yunxiao, what I did was I googled peonies, found two pictures i liked and put together three flowers. If you put in your search "peonies" there will be plenty of photos to paint from :)
My hometown is Luoyang in China and every year we have Peony Festival when the flowers blossom in early May:)People are so glad because of seeing these gorgeous pretty flowers, but their flowering is quite brief only lasts about 20 days... So nice that we can capture this beauty in watercolor:)
thank you for sharing :) how awesome it would be to attend a festival like that! wow! I visited China last year and I was there in May but probably far from where your town is. I felt in love with black sesame seed dumplings yum!!
I’m hoping your Patreon site provides some information on painting on hot press. You make it look easy, but it’s very different from cold press, and frustrating for a lot of people. I’m pretty good at cold press, but hot press has been disappointing. I’m definitely interested in joining, but I’ll wait until the start of the month because I know Patreon charges that way. As everyone has already said, your work is beautiful.
Hi Anne, thank you for inquiring about my classes. Just fyi, Patreon charges you on the date you join, and then 30 days from the day you joined. If you join March 15th, next month you will be charged is on April 15th (not on the 1st) Each Patreon creator has it set up differently. Also, these peonies are a very old video of mine. This would a real time video from maybe 2017. Today, I have detailed classes on Patreon, and VoiceOver tutorials. Here's an index to Patreon's tutorials and classes. Www.mariamorjane.com/patreon.html I started painting with watercolors on Hot Pressed - then in 2017 I started painting on Cold Pressed and Rough. In my humble opinion, Hot pressed is not good for beginners because there's no texture. You are forced to work on details. Cold Pressed, or rough are the forgiving papers. Much easier to learn how to paint on. Hot pressed dries 10X faster than CP or Rough. And to be honest, in my opinion, watercolors look much better on Cold pressed or rough, with texture.
@@mariamorjane Thank you for responding so quickly. I was taking a course on Domestika, and that particular one used Hot Press. I found myself really disliking my results, and quickly lost interest. Now, unfortunately, I have a block of Fabriano hot press that I’ll probably never use. Oh well. I paint with watercolor as a hobby, and because it’s fun, and the colors are beautiful. If it’s not fun, then what’s the point. I happen to have plenty of cold press! Thanks for letting me know about Patreon. I thought they had changed to the starting date being the date a customer signs up, but it’s not clearly stated anywhere. I don’t do as much painting during the summer because I don’t have the time, so I’m going to sign up now, while I can get in at least a month or two.
Hi Anne, you are very welcome. Patreon offers this option to some Patron creators only, so that's why with some other creators - you may still see that everyone no matter when they join - get charged on the 1st. Yes, I totally understand about Hot Pressed... It was my first watercolor paper ever. But, after years and years of teaching how to paint with watercolors, I know that this is NOT the right paper for the beginners. I was just mentioning this to a friend who's my student too, you have to be careful out there. There's a lot of unexperienced watercolor teachers out there, and even tho their works may attract someone, that person doesn't necessarily understand watercolors, techniques, and it's not only easy to pick up on their bad habits, but also, it may be hard to get honest opinions about papers and what's best for a beginner. It was during the pandemic, 2020-2021, when the most creators ever joined Patreon. There's a lot of articles about this on the internet. Anyways, I hope to see you there, if not, I wish you all the best and I hope you will enjoy painting on Cold Pressed 🤗🌹
Thank you for the info. Honestly I am still in awe of the beauty of this painting of my favourite flower, peonies! Would a process like this, with initial wetting of each petal before painting colour, work with regular hot 140lb paper? I converted 300g into gsm and it comes to 640gsm!! As I'm just beginning in watercolours, I don't know if I should try it on such thick paper yet! But I have a pad of A3 300gsm (140lb) paper! I also have same 140lb Not paper. I tried a few botanicals on Not paper and it was pretty hard to put in details.....
Yes it will work, the paint will spread in a different way but you can definitely paint these on a 140lb hot pressed. Most of my paintings are on a hot pressed 140lb. A lot of watercolor papers offer free samples, tryi writing to few companies under" contact us" section :) besides the more you experiment the better your knowledge will be on watercolor papers and how it reacts with paints etc
Thanks, that's a really great idea. But I don't think any company will send me anything, I am not a professional artist like you! Anyway I started a floral on the 140lb using, or trying to follow your process. I have had to leave it and continue tomorrow. More layers needed on the petals I have done. Is this a style that needs to be done in one sitting? Do you think stopping in the middle will affect the finished painting in any way? Also, the paper is totally buckling! I havent't taped it down, as I wasn't sure it would help. Is it necessary to use tape to stretch the paper? Am I using too much water? Thanks in advance.
Hi, I actually asked for samples because one of my subscribers here told me about it, and she doesn't have a youtube channel neither a website that's why I'm pretty sure you can ask for some too :) I always finish my painting, never walk away from it because buckling can happen once the paper starts drying. I lay my watercolor paper on a glass (kitchen cutting boar glass) and when I paint big backgrounds, the water and paint create that suction between the paper and glass and the paper always stays in place. What you could do is get a glass to paint on and brush some water underneath the paper. Just don't let your paper ever completely dry on that glass when you are done painting because it will glue itself to the glass. Now, You don't have to finish it all in one day. I just paint that way, but I know at the beginning it's probably impossible to finish a painting like this in two hours. The spotting won't affect your painting :) you can always brush it off with a wet brush... I don't ever stretch my paper. You can sure tape it down, a lot of people find it very helpful. In a painting like this yes I would recommend it too. I don't like to tape the paper down when I paint a full landscape type backgrounds, where the paint is everywhere. Mostly because the art gets trapped underneath but when you just paint flowers, you won't have that problem. At the beginning when you paint petals, it's always better to use less paint, light layers.. because you can always add more later...I hope this helps :)
Hi Lauren, with watercolors (in tubes or pans) you need a brush to paint with. And watercolor pencils - imagine regular pencils/crayons but you can use water with them, so once you draw with these watercolor pencils you can use a brush to go over the areas. I have painted with watercolor pencils before, I will try to make a tutorial on that :)
Hello maria , I love your drawing right now ,by the way in this moment I also draw roses ,but your drawing is much beautiful than mine 😍😍😍😍😍.and I love it so much.

Your lightness of touch is amazing. I'm way too heavy handed, no wonder my paper always warps lol. Stunning painting, so delicate and beautiful. Su xx
Thank you so much Su ;) if your paper warps.. this 300lb may be a good option for you :) it's thick.. I think it's like 1mm.. it won't warp :)
Stunning work as always! Isn't working on 300lb a dream! It's an expensive preference but worth it.
Hi Erin ;) yes... but I bought mine in a sheet 22X33 which I cut up in small pieces... it was about $11, so maybe not too bad :) thank you!!

@@mariamorjane I’ve joined, and the tutorials are lovely.
love it!!!!!!!
Thank you 🌸😀
Hi Maria mam really it's amazing 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Thank you so much :))) xx
This is so beautiful. I wondered in what size paper did you do this?
Thank you so much :) I had a big sheet of hot pressed 300lb, 22X33 and I cut it into smaller pieces, this one is somewhere around 10X12...
What brand of paper is that? It seems to be spreading the colours so nicely
this is Arches Hot pressed 300lb🌸
wwwwwwwOooooowwwwwww!!!OMG😵😵 I really heve to try paint this too!!!!
Hi Romina 😀thank youuuu!!
I was just wondering what the difference was between water color colored pencils and regular water colors. Thank you.
Did you use a reference photo? And if so, would you post it? I would love to see it to help me learn how to paint this flower composition
Thanks
Hi Sandra, I had real flowers as my reference, so no images. so sorry ☺️
I want outline of this design.... how can i get.... it's really pretty...
Thank you so much Geetha, unfortunately this is an older painting video of mine and back then I wasn't scanning my sketches yet...😆
Where do you get the images/line art for your paintings? Or do you draw them yourself?
HI Naomi, I draw everything myself, I make a pencil sketch first then work with watercolors
Hello maria , I love your drawing right now ,by the way in this moment I also draw roses ,but your drawing is much beautiful than mine 😍😍😍😍😍.and I love it so much.
