Historian on Emmett Till's accuser recanting story

  • In 1955, a 21-year-old white woman named Carolyn Bryant claimed a black teenager, Emmett Till, made sexual advances toward her. That claim led to Till's kidnapping and death. Historian Timothy Tyson says the woman has broken her silence for the first time to recant her story. Tyson joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss his new book, "The Blood of Emmett Till," which examines Bryant's claims.

Good afternoon Jane. You said; "she is not a victim"
This was a terrible interview. They would not let the author, Timothy Tyson, get a word in edgewise. If they had allowed him to finish his sentence, he would have explained his use of the word Victim.
She did not tell her husband about the whistle. Because she feared he would seek out Emmett and WHIP him. She was a victim of his RAGE (not physically toward her) and HATRED. His book is not about HER, Carolyn Bryant.
His book is about the VICTIMS, Emmett Till and his mother. And how this lynching spurred the Civil Rights era.

Carolyn Bryant is NOT the victim in this. Let's get that straight, right off the bat. She lied, because she had no backbone and was hateful, for whatever reason; plain and simple. That boy could have done amazing things and she completely stripped him of ever having the chance to even find out. Most importantly though, Emmett Till IS the victim in this. His family included.

There is something that really bothers me about Gayle. She brings up that Emmit “whistled” at his accuser as if to say well he did do something provoking and it’s the white woman who says that didn’t justify what happened to him. This is the second time I’ve seen and Heard Gayle show such little understanding around issues of race and racism. She acts like an out of touch black person who can barely relate to the underbelly of systemic racism.

After he published this book, the DOJ reopened the case, only for Bryant to then claim she never recanted her story and deny ever talking with the author. In these last several weeks, the DOJ closed the case because no evidence could be brought forward that that this interview even took place. This is why people should stop trying to humanize racists. When I went to take his money, he grabbed my hand and said "how about a date", I walked away from him and he said, “What’s the matter baby, can’t you take it?” He walked out the door and said, “goodbye,” so I went out to the car to get my pistol and when I came back he whistled at me, this whistle was while I was going after the pistol, he didn’t do anything further after he saw the pistol.” ... that same story was confirmed by witnesses and never recanted. C. Bryant never defended herself from the exposé about her lying in Tyson's book.
She is also noted to have changed her statements at least twice, by exaggerating greatly during the trial.
She knew her husband and brother in law had brutally murdered Till, she still suppoted them and lied in their defense.
No witness supported any version of C. Bryant's statements.
Statements given by Simeon Wright (he was with Till in store), allege that Till simply whistled (there's no confirmation that Till whistled at Bryant; Till had enunciation difficulties to alleviate which his mother taught him to whistle, and there was checkers game going on across the street which Till may have whistled at) no obscene remarks were made, no touching at all occurred.

The author (Tyson) claims that Carolyn Bryant confessed to him in 2008 that she had lied in her trial testimony. However, Tyson shows no proof that she did! He supposedly recorded both interviews with Carolyn yet her "confession" isn't found in either of them. Tyson later claimed that he was "setting up his tape recorder" which fails to explain why he simply didn't have her repeat her statement. LOL
Carolyn's daughter-in-law (Marsha Bryant) was the person who had contacted Tyson in the first place. She stated that she was there for both interviews and never heard her mother-in-law recant!
Tyson did keep written notes of his interview. Not sure why since he tape-recorded it. I'm not 100% clear as to this element, but supposedly his ORIGINAL notes as turned in to Duke University archive did not include a written record of Carolyn's confession, but one appeared later. I've seen it. It's a page of lined paper with notes stating that Carolyn said this and that. But there is no way to authenticate the paper. This was earth-shaking. Why, for example, didn't he write a written statement and have Carolyn sign it? Why didn't he take his own notes and have them notarized to at least establish the "when and where."
Tyson also claims that he was shown defense notes showing what she told defense lawyers before the trial. But, again, there's no proof of where the notes he was shown came from. There's no proof of when in the interview process with her husband's attorney she stated what.
The point Tyson fails to address is what most Emmett Till apologists miss: Why did Carolyn Bryant angrily run out of her store to grab a pistol? To use modern terminology . . . . how badly did Emmett Till "sexually harass" a 21-year old white lady to where she felt she needed a pistol to defend herself?
And don't forget that when Bryant and Milam confronted Emmett Till in his bedroom, they asked him "Are you the boy who was running his mouth?" and Till replied "Yeah."
Final point: If you look at the background of Tyson, you find he's a shill for several black social activist organization INCLUDING BLACK LIVES MATTER. I think he's just your typical self-hating white man who questions his own maasculinity and seeks to overcome his inadequacies by being a pro-black Social Justice Warrior.
I don't believe Carolyn Bryant ever changed her story. I think Tyson plugged this in there to sell his book. Just my opinion. Study it yourself and see what you decide.

I read Tyson's book and I was disappointed. This man is a seasoned journalist and he gets the "confession" of the century and he doesn't record it?!!!? He doesn't have Mrs Bryant sign anything or write anything??? What kind of an investigator reporter asks a crucial question like that and has NO record of it????? I agree with you!!
Where I do not agree with is Carolyn Bryant going to get a gun. She did not. For starters, the Bryant's didn't own a car, that was Juanita Milam's car. All of the witnesses at the store said she came out on the porch, but she was not angry. That's when Emmett whistled! One of the men on the porch said, "get out of here, before she gets a gun and blows your head off!!" By all witness accounts, she was not "angry" when she came out of the store and she was not going for a gun, someone said she "would get a gun" but she did not. When Bryant and Milam questioned Emmett and he said, "yeah" that was his answer to them asking him, are you that fat boy from Chicago?? He wasn't saying that he did the "talking" he was saying he was from "Chicago"
