- Several months ago, we took on the adventure of running the Georgia Traverse from East to West. During this trip, we fell in love with the Cohutta Wilderness and wanted to go back and explore The Big Frog Loop alone.
The Big Frog Loop is about 90 miles of forest roads and shoot off roads, circling the 37,000 acres of the Cohutta Wilderness. With scenic views looking out over the vast North Georgia and Southern Tennessee Mountian ranges, this is a fairly simple ride that can be done in 2-3 days and you are sure to pass many waterfalls along the way.
I highly recommend this easy ride for any explorer or family weekend camping adventure.

I did a part of this about 2 years ago. I would love to join anybody doing these trails. I live in Georgia and love the Cohutta Wilderness.
Edit: Me and a friend of mine was up in that area a few months ago, I remember seeing that Mercedes van near where you camped. We were in a Green Gladiator and my buddy was in his Black Frontier.
I’m always down to explore the Cohutta. You don’t have to ask me twice.

Lake con-uh-saga (conasauga). It was cool seeing you there. I grew up going camping there every summer as a kid.

Oh man.... the Cohutta, Big Frog Loop and North Georgia Mountains in general are some of the most beautiful places in Southern US. I love them too. if you ever need some location points, DM me and I can shoot you some places to visit.
Lake Cognasata? It's Conasauga, pronounced Con-ah-saw-guh. The Conasauga River starts in the Cohutta Wilderness Area and flows north towards Tennessee. There's a Conasauga River (Hiking) Trail, 13 miles, 36 river crossing within the wilderness. Great hike in the late summer when the water level is not too high. The river goes up into Tennessee, turns to the west, then turns back south and forms the boundary between Whitfield and Murray Counties in Georgia before eventually feeding into the Coosawattee River. Good video other than mangling that place name. Glad you enjoy the area. It's a treasure here in northwest Georgia.

We actually we back up to the Lake in August and camped out there for the weekend in site 19. we spent some time fishing, hiking, swimming, etc. it's my new favorite place in North Georgia.
I hope you picked that water bottle up that you drove off with on your finder 21:9

If you have ever filmed anything for UA-cam (or been on a ride with a content creator filming for UA-cam), you know that we didn't actually drive off in that shot. That camera was set up JUST to film me getting in the Jeep (opening the door, getting in and closing the door). Then I get back out, move the camera to another angle, collect my belongings and drive off.
All that explanation to say, we didn't drive off with a water bottle on the Jeep. Call it "an Easter egg" in the video. I should have moved it before filming.

Great trail and not challenging at all, but you do need to be prepared to bounce for hours straight. I'm on these trails frequently, and enjoy every other trail a little more. I like my internal organs in their original place, not jarred all over the place. Everyone I've ever ridden with on this trail says the same thing every time. I'd do it again, just not soon.
The Georgia side of the Big Frog Loop is a little more "well maintained", however it is drastically different when you cross over into the Tennessee side... you are right. it gets very bumpy. I usually just air down to about 12psi and that helps a lot. I love riding this area in all times of the year.
Glad to find more channels with Georgia Overlanders. Just getting to the point my JK is able to do some trails and looking forward to meeting this community!
We have some great trails in Georgia and on the East Coast. most channels that have inspired me have all been West Coast (Trail Recon, Epic Family Road Trip, Venture 4W, Overlandx, etc). That is one of the reasons I wanted to start Road Rash is because there was not ALOT of content showing the beautiful country we have on the East Coast.

Thank you Frank. This is the perfect ride for a small family to get away for a couple of days. I'm looking forward to doing it again. Are you guys in the Georgia area? What are some other short overlanding areas you guys have enjoyed that I can venture out and film?
@@RoadRashOffRoad We’re in North Hall county in Gainesville and speaking of which we just got back from riding Burrells Ford rd up in Clayton off of 28. It’s a nice little ride that we wanted to check out so we left around 4:30 this morning so we could get back in time for a game we wanted to watch. Also look up west fork campground off of warwoman rd and check it out, that’s a cool ride as well, nothing major, about 4/5 miles or so that circles back on to woman
Also there’s a lot more to Sarah’s Creek than people know about. There’s some nice trails that go out of Sarah’s creek back to warwoman rd with a few primitive camping areas as well.
Here’s another trail on our bucket list Road Rash, it’s called The Goat Trail in western North Carolina. Hopefully these few places will help you in your search for other possible videos with your channel and again thanks for all you do for us Jeepers!! 😁

Thank you 🙏🏼. I try and get a look at everyone’s rig setup when I’m out. Everyone is different and has a unique way of organizing things. I always get ideas for my own setup from others walk through.
I personally LOVE sleeping in the Jeep when I’m rolling by myself. Especially if we are “on the move”, meaning camping one night, packing up and leaving every morning for a new destination. It’s quick, easy and not a lot of mess (not like rolling up a tent). Also, when I’m in the hard shell of a Jeep cab with the doors locked, I find I can easily go into a deep sleep (not like tent camping where every noise wakes me up). You should try it.
If my family is coming with me, we should obviously don’t all fit in the Jeep so we bring the tent.

We’re in middle Georgia (20 minutes south of griffin). When we did cohutta and cashes valley we drove up and back in the same day, my next time I want to camp up there. Hoping there’s some stuff open over winter. Still sorting out the details but your videos are helpful, you give a lot of detail.

Good stuff. I can't wait to film there too on my channel. If only I cold work from the trails... lol ;) I recently filmed a fall ride up in NC and hit hurricane creek, that private place Outdoor in the Smokies, and a FS road (Molly Gap) over a couple of days when the colors were peak. After watching your video I wish I would have gone here too. Looks like peak was about the same time I was up north of there.

Just pulled in from our 1500mi trip from South Florida to Hiawassee, Georgia. SUV camped @ the fairgrounds. We will rig up with a few more goodies and be back for the loop!! Can’t wait!
Oh man... le the know when you are back up here for the Big Frog Loop. I may not be able to do the whole loop with you but I could probably meet up with you guys on the trail for one day.
Also keep in mine, the Southern part of the Big Frog Loop is closed due to snow and weather from Jan 1 - mid March.
"Con-a-saug-a" I cringed every time you said the word, I go up there and fish that lake all the time, I live very close to this place, glad you enjoyed it...but you only seen the normal stuff ... I'd be happy to show you around one weekend. but loved the video,

We actually went back up in August and camped at site 19, right on the lake. the perfect site. We hiked, swam, took boats and explored all over there. I fell in love with Conasauga.
I am building a K-5 Blazer that would work nice on this trip. So looking forward to enjoying this trail.

Been wanting to hit up Big Frog Loop. This makes me more confident to do it. Wasnt sure if my stock Ram Rebel could handle it.
Yes... your Ram Rebel can DEFIANTLY make it. That would be a perfect vehicle for this ride. This is a super easy ride. You will not get yourself into any trouble (unless you go looking for it), but it is very scenic. Some of the best views in Northern Georgia are up in the Cohutta.
Whether you are traveling with your family, friends or just riding on a solo adventure, this is a great 2-3 days away to "regroup".
Looks like you started at Wonder woman that goes uo to Sarah's creek...is that correct? Trying to do the loop next weekend, we liked the lake section if you can share your route
It’s been a while since I ran the Big Frog loop but I think I came in from Blue Ridge 575 and entered the Cohutta at Watson Gap. Drove south and met up with my friends at Jack River Fields Campground where we stayed night 1.
Next day, drove West and stopped at Lake Conasauga and explored there (they also have excellent camping there as well).
Drove up the West side of BFL headed North into TN. Camped on the northern border of TN and GA at Tumbling Creek.
Next day, drove south to finish the loop at Weston Gap.

If you are in "Northern Georgia" area (suburbs), you probably did. I was in that area all day.
What did you think of Cashes Valley? its one of my favorite quick day trips to go on.

@@X9Adventures Yea.... I think over time, the more people that visit Charlies Creek end up creating a lot of "wear and tear" on the trail / road. It has progressively gotten worse over the last year or so.

Great video that trail looks it could be done with a car. I'm new to this over landing and would like to do an easy trail. I have a 4x4 Ford F250 crew cab with 8 foot bed. Would this be a good choice for this truck? Oh I noticed you have a high jack mounted on top of the hood. After seeing another video it was mentioned about how that could be bad in a front in crash. i'm just try to be super safe. Have a great day.
hi Herman... thank you for the compliments. For the most part, The Big Frog Loop is a well maintained forest road so tackling this in your Ford F250 should be no problem, however this is not a "car" type road. As soon as you cross over into TN, the road becomes significantly less maintained and not suitable for a car. your F250 will be fine. I highly suggest The Big Frog Loop as an adventure for you.
Hi. I’ve been enjoying your videos both on the content and technical sides. I’m fairly new to off-roading /overlanding. I’ve loved backpacking and camping over the years as well as racing Moto-cross during the late 70s and go kart and stock car racing in the 80s. My 2004 Wrangler LJ Jeep has been a nice combination of the mechanical and outdoors aspects of my former activities. Where did you get the light strip that was at the interior base of your rear window hatch and how was it wired to turn on as the hatch is opened.
Man… you’ve had some amazing adventures of your own. I’ve always wanted to do moto cross. It was never in my budget when I was younger and now I’m almost 50, I think I’d do way too much damage 😂
The lighting strip on my back window works PERFECT. It puts out ALOT of light at camp. My wife bought that for me for one of my birthdays but I think she just bought it from Amazon.
On the roll bar, there is a wire for the dome light inside the padding. I just spliced it into the dome light wire
The cost for Moto-cross wasn’t too bad in the 70s. The stock car racing was terribly expensive. Only did two seasons of that. I just turned 61. Not sure how that number came so fast. It doesn’t seem real. Thank you for the reply on the light strip and wiring suggestion. I’ll look around on Amazon for something similar. We live in Kentucky just east of Louisville. So far I’ve only gone to Red River Gorge area and Hot Springs Off Road Park but have really enjoyed it. I have a 2006 Wrangler LJ that’s all stock except the wheels. Didn’t want to run it off road. I found a good deal on a high mileage 2004 LJ for the off roading. I’ve attached a photo of that and one old Moto cross photo below. (It’s not a Rubicon. The young couple I bought it from put that decal on there.) My wife grew up camping as well. She’s retiring from kindergarten teaching in a couple years. We want to start off roading and overlanding then. The Georgia Traverse and the what seem to be nearby areas in your videos look beautiful and well within our range to travel to. Thank you for all your work to create your videos on UA-cam. You have a great screen personality and seem like a good decent man. Maybe someday our trail paths will cross.

North GA is a beautiful place to explore and definitely not far from KY. We did a trail in KY called the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway (DBBB). Great adventure. I actually have that on my list of trails to do this year (I think in July or so). You’re welcome to jump on if you’d like.

Is there any issues with the Buddy Heater inside the jeep? Or is that why you have the fans in place?
I have done much research on CO2 levels inside closed areas and all content and test conclude that the Mr Buddy is safe indoors and is not harmful. I've even called Mr Buddy and they also said it is safe as well.... However I'm still apprehensive with something this serious.
For me, I've kept the Mr Buddy inside my Jeep on every Fall, Winder and Spring trip I've gone on and have never had any issues. Works perfect but even though all test point to Mr Buddy being safe, I can't bring myself to run it completely closed off. I do keep at least one of the window guards in for circulation. Eventually, I am going to buy a small CO2 monitor for inside the jeep.
Do you worry about people trying to steal your equipment when you set up for those drive by shots?
Yes. I’m always afraid of this. I set up, drive by and then hall butt REALLY REALLY fast back to the camera.
But usually i try and set up the tripod in unique places (most of the time in bushes or in the trees) where people driving by won’t see it.

Iron bridge crosses over the Tennessee and Georgia border at the northern part of the Loop 
are the road in good condition to ride a harley-davidson?
On the Georgia side, yes. Once you cross over to TN, the forrest roads are much less maintained and rough.
Do you have GPS cords or trail map?
Hey Jason…. The Big Frog Loop is actually part of the Georgia Traverse. There is a full GPX file for the Georgia Traverse on www.georgiaoverland.com available for download. You can load this into Gaia and it has the Big Frog Loop sectioned out (a big 90 mile circle that surrounds the Cohutta Wilderness.

Could you do the big frog in 2 days?
Sure you could. We opted for 3 because there is a lot of shoot off trails we wanted to explore. If you just went in for the Loop, you could easily do that in 2 days
Just driving the loop without too many side trails took me about 12 hours, so you can technically do it in one day. Most of the roads are best driven at about 10-15 mph, and in some places slower. The loop itself, not counting the access roads to get to it, is about 73 miles.
