Only the hippie tourists are making this a big problem. I was once bribed for $500 in Bangkok. I don't think the fisherman did the right thing. But these travelers should not take it that serious. There are such deceptive men and women also in Europe. And in Rome I met deceitful men. So there are good and bad people everywhere. That doesn't mean I'm going to defend our beach boys or the poor fishermen, however, this incident is more than a top complaint. These UA-cam Normads are also trying to promote their videos by sarching or new subscribers, but it's unbearable for the lowly tourists to act so arrogantly.

im so sorry there are people like this in Sri Lanka :( I have trust issues in Sri Lanka because once I was at the beach a guy selling coconuts asked me if I wanted to buy one, I told him no 4-5 times but after a while I got tired of him so I asked how much and immediately he started cutting the coconut and after he was done he told me it was 500 rupees, I told him no thats way to expensive and then he started getting aggressive and telling me I need to buy because he had cut it open already. Please watch out for these people and also if anyone want you to go follow them to their shop or gemstore tell them no. There are so many police in Sri Lanka so I wish they would look after tourists more because this will only hurt Sri Lankan tourism and entire nation

My last time in SL,in 2023,was by far the worst of the 8 times I have been there-felt like a walking ATM,hard to relax being offered drugs,sex-women/men,couldnt sit 2mins on the beach w/out someone coming up..hi friend. Hikkaduwa was terrible,Beruwela ok,MLavinia not good. Upshot-wont return

Scams are unfortunately part of the deal when you're an independent traveller in SL. The good thing is it's usually never dangerous, and most experienced travellers can sniff them out easily.
This type of things happen even in Europe in more violent way,this is a small scam,when you are on road traveling it’s good experience,Sri Lanka is a small island,if you are going through whole of Asia scams and crime is in a another level.

Give them an opportunity at least-definetely got much worse in SL since Covid,was there in 2019 then again 2023 and things were very different,people seemed desperate,got offered drugs,sex-men /women-begging was more common. Wont go back,in Thailand at the moment and ,if you stay away from obvious tourist hotspots,nobody bothers you . In SL.you couldnt sit on the beach without someone approaching within 2 mins or so as above.-in the end I felt like a walking ATM,thats what we are to some SLs,not all of course some people are genuinely friendly to be clear.
