I ordered 16 chickens last year and ended up with two rooster, a Blue Red Wyandotte and the Black Austrolorp. I gave 5 (what were supposed to be hens) to my sister, she ended up with the R/B Wyandotte roo. We are basically doing the same thing. Breeding a game rooster (1/2 Albany, 1/4 asil, 1/4 red quill) to standard production red hens. with the color combos that is being carried within the roosters blood line. We are getting several different color hens. Then with the laying traits of the mother hens we hope to get the best of both worlds with maybe slightly less egg production but with the added survivability and hardiness of the game fowl. Interested in watching your project progress. Thanks for sharing !!

    Im trying to breed a large type chicken with dark lavender feathers that lay purple eggs (dark brown eggs with a heavy bloom on them to make them appear purple). I'd be using lavender Orpingtons and sussexes barnevelders malays and marans. Im willing to dedicate decades to this. Also, I did accidentally breed a large brahma cross rooster with a bantam cross hen. Their baby was black, which did not look like either parent. It was hilarious. My favourite current breed is wyandotte, i dont think you can improve on that breed as a whole.

    What is the important on crossing chickens with the same comb?
    I have 6 chicks that are Blue Maran x Easter Egger cross, they are only 8 weeks old. 4 of them are jet black and 2 are grey (blue) and all have slight variation of copper feathers around the neck. Also all but 1 have feathered feet. I can't tell the combs yet.

    • @MBHeritageFarms
      @MBHeritageFarms  2 роки тому +2

      Crossing chickens with different cimbs will always produce different combs, some combs are a dominant gene and some are recessive.

  • @critter4662
    @critter4662 5 місяців тому +1

    Can you elaborate on the comb aspect. I want to breed specific for comb. I want a certain breed to be better for cold but I need a pea or rose comb. I’ll have to research which comb is recessive vs dominant. Do males or females determine traits?

    • @MBHeritageFarms
      @MBHeritageFarms  5 місяців тому

      Yes they both add 50%, Pick the type of comb you want to improve on but dont mix comb types during breeding. Use my spiral breeding technique to improve on these traits ua-cam.com/video/og1Lx3iRxWM/v-deo.html Thanks and have a great week

      Sorry to so long to reply, this comment was in review section lol probably because it contains the words C list
      , So just remember always try to start with different breeds but full bloods. that makes a hybrid, but its not impossible if you use hybrids or crosses, it just takes longer to get genetics to settle, but hey thats how cornish crosses are made ;) thank you so much for the sub have a great weekend!

    Me and my family are hoping once Shotgun (The Ameraucana rooster) becomes mature enough and see his personality (Were hoping that he's mostly quiet because the breed that he is mostly quiet though can be loud, because well they can) we also have delaware hens (We have other Ameraucana hens) that still need to mature as well. Were hoping to make a Spring Speckles (Or SS) though we need to see on what the breeders have as in color patterns, weight, etc.
    I'm going to be letting you guys know real quick on what were hoping to get from this new breed were hoping to make: The Spring Speckles would be a chill yet alert chicken, dual purposed, and hardy breeds, were also hoping that they lay loads of eggs though we don't know what colors they would lay, and what colors they would be. That's my family's hope. Thank you for sharing this video, it was really helpful! Thank you again, I'll be watching the playlist!

    They are currently grey and black but I wouldn't be surprised if the colors change drastically as they age.
