I remember walking through target and seeing 1 celebrations upc on the shelf… I hesitated! Before I could move, a 70 year old woman casually walked by grabbing the upc slowly walking away with her cart
I got back into it after the set was already out. I got back in around brilliant Stars and I opened up a lot of the dark Sylveon and Lance Charizard boxes while trying to also retain some for down the road because I know it's going to cycle again
You can’t say that for certain. You don’t know if the media will remain as relevant in 30 years. I have a 50/50 outlook it will remain popular or be irrelevant. Be prepared to sell soon

15% drop on an out-of-print product is pretty bad. If you bought this at the park you’re down 25-30% trying to liquidate and your capital is tied up for an undefined amount of time. It’s not a collapse but it’s definitely a beating

I wanna open this for sure! I’d grade the charizard just for the hell of it!! Like you often say there is a fun cost associated with opening stuff so you have to be willing to lose money or just don’t open it!!
I love seeing this. 25th UPC was the most scalped and botted MFer ever. Lots of backdooring from gamestores, I had huge struggles getting the UPC I have that I didnt have with any other product in recent memory. Seeing the Huge amount of available UPCs still and the downward trend of pricing warms my heart.
Dont worry, mate. You probably would never have had the chance to get it near MSRP. It went to 300€ basically instantly and pretty much stayed there. Scalpers were a real big problem back then
@@cr4cker394correct. I saw one on a shelf at Christmas 2021 being resold for $200 and was so bitter about the scalping I wouldn’t even consider it. This box is scarred
Prices always start off inflated. Then fall rapidly, that’s early bird fomo sales which aren’t indicative of actual prices. Base line prices generally don’t appear until the next set comes out, takes a while for most people to buy the newest set. For instance twilight masquerade prices right now are pretty much locked in at what they are selling for unless it gets a reprint, which it probably will. Stellar crown won’t have any baseline metrics until surging sparks is about to release.
despite trying to find one of these in the wild, I was left to assume the distributers themselves were scalping these online. All other product I'd run into at some point or other, this one was never seen at all.
I just stocked up on another 5 Celebrations UPC. It will high rocket when 30th Celebrations comes out. It happened to 20th Generations and that set also had a ton of product.
I still remember how hard it was to get my hands on that upc. I had to HUNT retail stores everyday! I joined discords, i asked mj holding people, followed local restock groups ect. I managed to only get two. Opened one and gifted the other!I still remember seeing photos of someones gararage full of UPCs lol
I noticed an upward trend in Silver Tempest recently. Not sure what it’s like elsewhere, but I’m in the UK. I got a booster bundle (6 pack box) of Silver Tempest last month for £19, checked today and it’s close to £28 now. Weird and wild. I’ve only just recently started collecting though, so I’m not overly informed on the market - couldn’t afford to do it as a kid when the original base set came out with the exception of a starter deck and 1 booster pack, but I’m making up for it now 🤣
I think when products like this start out very expensive right out of the gate, not as many get opened and the supply just keeps floating around as a speculative asset, keeping the price flat for a long time. The real growth comes from products that get slept on at release.
The Celebrations UPC felt like a high water mark for scalping, and I never got one. I just refused to pay over Msrp, and with some effort found other celebrations stuff at or under Msrp over time. But, in the same way as Lorcana first chapter, this box is forever tainted in my mind
My first ever "big" purchase I wanted to hold for "investment" almost exactly 2 years ago today. Bought one to rip (one of the first ever openings on my channel) and one to hold. Very happy with the one I opened as the contents are amazing, but the one I held well your chart tells the story LOL. Crazy that was two years ago, time in this hobby flys by.
It’ll change back. It was down to 330 and has gone back up to 340 since last month. Maybe the fomo will drive it higher, otherwise when the 30th comes out.
I bought the UPC and was only missing the metal cards to complete my master collection. I opened the UPC. I kinda wish I didn’t since it would have been a nice thing to add to my collection, which I’ve been building to share with my kids in the future. Super excited for that. Can’t wait to break over $3000 of sealed product in the future with them. 🥰
This is the kind of quality and effort they need to put in making premium collection boxes. Even the Charizard and 151 UPC are awesome compared to the new terapagos and greninja box.
That is not a collapse. The UPC was sold for more than double its retail price right from the beginning. That's not how it's supposed to work. This was a $150 product that was never worth less than double its retail price. Usually, a product remains below or at about retail price for the first 2-3 years and then slowly starts trending upwards. Pokémon in general moves way faster in recent years, but the UPC moved faster than any other product. No wonder it hasn't really moved since its release.
I still hold mine sealed. I am pretty sure the nostalgia will come back in full force when we hit the 30th anniversary. As another commentator said, 15% drop is not really a crash, considering the jump it already had made. Thanks Danny for producing analytical videos on the Pokémon space. 👍
On release I went to a gamestop and I was sadly the 3rd one to get there. It was also the day when the OLED switches came out so couldn't be sure who was who. The guy infront of me was there for the switch. Then found out the person in the front of the line was there for celebrations, and we came with his mom's Mastercard, got at least one of everything that came out. Sadly they only got 1 UPC. And because the market was messed up, you couldn't get one for less than 250. I just refused to pay that and never saw one in the wild.
The UPC was over prices out the gate because of PoS store owners lying about their supply of them or pricing them at $400-450 out the gate and made people set unrealistic ideas about how the price would be in the future. I can still think of one store that was all over discords about how bad the owner was selling them at $450 each out the gate yet people still bought them out, such a horrible owner (imo) who cares nothing for TCGs and only wants to rip people off. His store still over prices everything, idk why people buy from him.
Yeah not being able to get the ultra premium collection sucked so hard at the time. Lmao walked away from pokemon for a bit and came back for 151. And now playing catch up. Still would like to get more celebration packs, it was a blast at the time, all things considered.
Funny how things constantly goes up and down over there, here in Europe everything just gets more expensive lol, what we get for not getting a Pokemon Center here...
Stores didn’t get a lot of these UPCs, my target stocked these twice with like 5 each time. And with people waiting for them each person got atleast one…that’s if you were the first 5 people 😂😂 The ETBs were stocked to brim though….
Opening celebrations is pretty fun but way to expensive. All because of the metal cards having a small chance of being 10s and the possibility of pulling the zard of course
As someone barely getting into it. I decided to invest in this for $300 which i considered a steal. You have no idea how helpful this video was to make me feel better about spending that much for a single box. I now feel better knowing it was a good investment. I plan to hold it for 10+ years anyways but yeah Im glad I learned I got moneys worth atleast in just content. :D thank you!
I got my UPC at cost plus shipping from a guy in a discord that got lucky and found them at a retail store as well as won a raffle. He didnt have the funds for all the ones he had, so he hooked a couple people up.
After dozens of attempts to pre order/ find these in the wild I saw one, just one of these at a Walmart, never bought something so fast! I cracked it right away and didn’t pull much but it was so awesome to experience! Wish I found more 😅
I never understood celebrations and generations when you could simply buy the original cards from base Set. Set reprints are only cool when they're comprehensive and include the entire set, these pick and choose amalgamations are kind of lame. A reprint of Base Jungle Fossil as a high-end commemorative set would be neat. Or an English release of vending series.
I’ve been watching this box for over 2 years the price has not moved. Bought 3 at 300$ opened 1 and only the pikachu was damaged. Yet to grade the zard. wish me luck
I think celebration is a fun set but idk if I’d spend more on a celebrations pack than on a set like chilling reign or even later swsh sets. But to each their own
That Charizard is single handedly holding the set together. I truly believe without it, nobody would talk positive about the set. The prices have been atrocious since the start, tho we're a little better before. If only id known I could likely buy the entire set for $150 at any point in time, I'd have never purchased a single pack of celebrations. The UPC is only selling for value of the gold cards. Tell me I'm wrong
@Danny Phantump - please help if u know... I don't understand where all those Celebrations UPC boxes came from. The Poke Center had LIMITS on how many anyone could buy, and sold out of them in seconds (like 2x or so) and never had a restock. Our local LGS and Gamestops had minimal allocations (some only had 2...some high-volume stores only got 4). The bigbox retailers got a few more but also never restocked. Where did the dealers get all those boxes? I did see at one point that a single dealer had 700 of them. (What??) Yet, so many collectors missed out on it (and are still po'd). Yet, no one store ever got more than about 10. So, it feels to me that there had to have been a leak in the distribution chain... unless you know where else there could be numbers anything like that in dealer hands??
At the time, allocations were very based off of order history and sales volume. Large stores would have been allocated a lot more since they spent so much annually so if a dealer you know of had 700, they must have a very large spend history.
I remember walking through target and seeing 1 celebrations upc on the shelf… I hesitated! Before I could move, a 70 year old woman casually walked by grabbing the upc slowly walking away with her cart
