Yup. This is the guy that influenced this generation of drummers.
With help from your favorite Dummer's Drummer Neil Peart before he passed... Don't EVER forget it!!!!
this is also the guy that likes the current potato in the oval office.
I'd say you forgot:
Rick Colaluca
Mark Zonder
Scott Rockenfield
Sean Reinert
Nicko McBrain
and
Mikkey Dee
Just my opinion, but, these guys were crucial influences to me.
@@countbleck35 and that has to do with drumming... how?
@@countbleck35 current potatoe is less embarrassing than the previous potatoe, my god.
Looking at the game of Mike Portnoy, you immediately understand how much Dream Theater have lost during this time! The transition at the end of the ninth minute is fantastic! No Mike Mangini will EVER be able to compose a drum part like this with such a rhythmic pattern and play so soulfully! Bravo, Mike Portnoy!!!
That's a bunch of bullshit. C'mon man.
The groove, the execution, the feeling, the power what Portnoy make in his songs are absolutely amazing from other planet. 🤘🏼👏🏻👏🏻
even if you aren't Mike Portnoy fans, or maybe generally hates him, you can't deny that his kit always sounds on point. It's almost like every drummers dreams to have that absolute clean crisp sound.
Definitely. His kit always sounds SO GOOD. I don't follow him anymore really but back in the day when he was my primary influence (DT-era) he was the one who made me want octobans & stacks. He always had those 2 sounds on lock.
If you are not a Portnoy fan,m it means you have never heard of him! Only conclusion I can draw.
only the drums and percussion, his cymbals sound weak
His toms are always killer!
@@Qliphirot Remember, on Neal Morse's music, Neal Morse is the boss. He decides which sound he wants! Even the cymbals.
more Neal Morse on the channel is always a good thing
Yes!
Check "The Neal Morse Band" or "Transatlantic"
Absolutely!
@@zura_21 Or Flying Colors as well, or Sons of Apollo for that matter. So many projects/groups.
@@zura_21 Liquid Tension Experiment just released new stuff too. I keep thinking of his groups, lol.
Portnoy creates musical notes on the drum kit he’s playin, he’s not just playin rhythm he’s using his kit to harmonise and using the sound of his kit to play along with the music. And he’s just a fuckin god on drums
Yes Scott! Musician, not just a drummer
Mike Portnoy Layeth the smacketh down as always! I miss him being in Dream Theater for a variety of reasons 😪 he'll always be Dream Theaters Drummer in my heart
As the years have gone by and I've heard what MP has done since he left DT, I've come to feel that he wasn't Dream Theater's drummer, but Dream Theater was his band. The work he has done since 2011 has been just astounding, and I wonder how much of it he would have done if he had reluctantly stayed in DT. Either way, I love him, I love DT, and I love pretty much every project MP has worked on.
@@edmundh Well, he said that Dream Theater will always be his baby a couple of years ago.
Incredible a musician that Mike Mangini is, I can`t help that Dream Theater lost the special chemistry and the organic feel that they had with Mike Portnoy. It`s just a simple fact in my eyes, but I`m sure others feel different.
@@kennethchristophergrose5565 As much as I enjoy Portnoy, I'm really digging Mangini with them.
Mike is up there with the Greatest ever!!
Lots of great drummers, but Mike has an element of 'fun' that others are missing. Don't even have to see him, the fun comes thru the music.
Well said!
The live version of this song is even better. Amazing drummer.
I've always loved how portnoy not only provides rhythm, but also provides a counter melody
Highly orchestrated, until he cuts loose in the solo section towards the end, which is different every night on tour. As Neal Morse said, "You can't program that!"
No, you can not 😆
Didnt knew that song, what a Portnoy
Beastly performance !!
the drumming after 9 minutes is amazing
That vocal "fugal" part on this song was inspired by the seventies prog band Gentle Giant, the drummer of that band John Weathers has the best stank face of any drummer ever, also an amazing drummer! 😁
Wow great info. Thanks!
Not only is he consistent AF, but he makes it look so effortless ... It's probably why Neal works with him so often - I think they've done 20 LP's together or something like that? This year, they put out a new Transatlantic LP, and there's a new Neal Morse Band album in the works as well. (And you also could look at what Mike has been releasing from the new Liquid Tension Experiment album with John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess & Tony Levin too.)
You should REALLY react to his studio drum cam of Constant Motion. The guitar solo is seriously some of the most creative drumming I’ve seen for something which is technically not even a drum solo.
THIS
The man is out of this planet....a true Monster
this dude is blown away with portnoy. the look he has is such appreciation
Yes Sir 🙌
Man his Ride sounds killer. Wish Meinl had one that sounded like that.
Making them sing Gregory!
Thanks for taking my request Andrew! Woke up this morning and was pleasantly surprised to see this video. You made my day! Let’s see what else I can think of for you to react to! 🤘🏻
And thanks to you, we had a pleasure to enjoy this awesomeness! :)
Great choice. Wish someone would ask for The Great Debate drum cam.
@@carlosnascimento9269 That was my second choice for him to react to! The Great Debate is my favorite Mike Portnoy Drum Performance.
@@taytandrew2962 Nice! Hopefully someone gets around to it. I can barely pay the rent 😅
Cool that you covered this one since Neal Morse is my absolute favorite artist. This piece shows Portnoy's strength: musicality. There are faster and more technical drummers out there. But Portnoy has a unique way to lift the MUSIC instead of just performing difficult drumming. His work with Neal is amazing!
I have seen Mike Portnoy 3 times with the Neal Morse Band live and with Transatlantic too and he is the real deal and the shows last up to 3hours mostly playing at this speed throughout and he barely sweats at the end. I also love the live set he plays with the liquid tension experiment, especially the track Acid Rain. He also has loads of fun with Neal during their show. The key word there is FUN. As a result the audience feels part of it too. Just pure quality.
"Dream Theater - Instrumedley" is quite a feast. It has only been played live, as far as I know.
There's even a Portnoy-cam version out there (?v=XFo8UgrUkNA).
As its name conveys, it's an instrumental medley of some of Dream Theater's greatest riffs, starting with The Dance of Eternity, which you're already familiar with:)
It's quite long, but it would be cool to see your reaction to it.
I second your notion
There was a performance of Instrumedley at a NAMM or something like that from around 2004. I remember watching it in college 10 years ago. Yellow/Orange background, Mike had his double kit and everything, full band. It was amazing but its disappeared from UA-cam for some reason
I was wrong about a few details, including it not being on UA-cam anymore... ua-cam.com/video/N7wUviZ0z8g/v-deo.html
It's at modern drummer and the background I'm thinking of was from an LTE gig, but still it's there and very good.
That little stomp on that hi hat was sweet!! Just looked so controlled
Yes Gregory! Portnoy is the picture of control
Portnoy and Dream Theater was the reason I wanted to play drums, and he’s my inspiration. He’s still amazing, and looking so forward to the new Liquid Tension Experiment album.
As a lifelong prog fan I take no offense to "music for musicians" as a descriptor
Wow I've heard of him but never watched him. He plays so clean and his movements are so economical. Amazing how there were mostly changing time signatures and that steady pocket like you mentioned Andrew.
Killer stuff Eric!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I think you're right about orchestration. The cymbals were well placed. No strikes were extra.
I love Mike's drumming, he was highly influential in my drumming too. Great videos you put out
DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT - By Your Command (Live in Plovdiv 2017). Ryan Joost Van Poederooyen is a monster in that one
I want someone to look at me the way Rooney looked at Mike during the outro haha
😂😂😂😍😍😍
His timing is like listen to a flipping drum machine..... madness
MORE MIKE PORTNOY for sure!!
Always a pleasure to see your drum reactions ! Drums , Coffee , Portnoy , and the Fabulous Mr. Rooney !! Love your input and perspective . I was always watching drummers at concerts and now I'm learning some of the terminology thanks to you ! Keep it up 👍
He's just as fun watching live. I saw Neal Morse Band i Stockholm last year and sat on row 3 in a small venue with great view of them all.
Mike Portnoy sounds great even on a Hello Kitty drum kit.
Mike portnoy is the GOAT
Big call Daniel! I like it
Excellent example of his talent on accompanying the music and defining each note. Great catch on that Andrew and he plays straight time in the beginning and as the song Takes on more of the confusion parts. He plays the same parts in odd times. It’s a brilliant piece of work and Look up Neal Morse. Mike just kills it and always thank Andrew
Thank you for watching Rob!
I'm generally surprised, I haven't seen this video before and it amazes me on how small (comparatively) his kit is in the video. If you notice in the other videos you have reacted to his kit is massive, just a small thing I noticed! Haha
This is the guy we all hoped would show up to audition for our bands.
Such a great song. King Portnoy going crazy at the end haha 👑
Yeah you need to hang in till the end to get the full portnoy madness
I was just thinking yesterday that it would be nice to see more Mike Portnoy Reaction.... With all is band... Sons of Apolo, Liquid Tension etc.... 🤘🏼
Yeah- the first new single off that would be cool
I remember when Images and Words came out... I´d never heard drumming nor a drum sound like that before. This guy is something else. Many amazing drummers around but Mike is way up there. He makes it look so easy. With reference to the vocal section, check out Spock´s Beard (with Neal). Look for the song Day for Night for example.
Cheers for the entertaining videos btw!
Great band as well.
You got that right about arrangement! Might not be the MOST amazing chops wise, but he always approches songs in a very deliberate, methodical manner.
Absolutely Julien!
He is actually completely amazing chop wise. We should all know every musician doesn't play everything they can in every song they make. He's just extremely tasteful
@@VHDT10 Oh I know well his playing. I'm not trying to diminish anything. But there are many incredible players out there.
Bro, that was one nasty ass groove, incredible.
Mike certainly does well with highly orchestrated songs, but for a completely different side of him, check out this short tune - essentially Mike and bassist Tony Levin trying to throw each other off the beat! Totally improvised - and Mike loses it once, but then gets *way* outside, and manages to reel it back in 🙂It's just two great musicians having fun - and it's *infectious*!
The song is from the first (self-titled) Liquid Tension Experiment album, and is called "Chris and Kevin's Excellent Adventure"
Sounds awesome Grady
MIKE PORTNOY quote: Neil Peart, he's my drumming GOD!!!!!
Wow!
Also became a close friend. Imagine hanging out with your idol like that.
That's some shit-hot drumming right there. The sound of his kit too-just unreal.
Actually, Mike Portnoy is very good at improvising. There’s a lot of it on the liquid tension albums.
Excellent Robert!
mannnnn, portnoys groove on the mini snare is amazing
Wow did not know this wonderful piece of music
Mr.Portnoy's drumming and what i find so Amazing is his tempo changes. And how clean and centered his hits are. Great choice on behalf of the Patreon.
Yeah!
Mike Portnoy, I've been waiting for this video! 👍🏼
That was awesome! Mike’s stuff with Neal Morse is amazing
fabulous! I can never get enough of Mike Portnoy videos!
this one was very gentle gianty-esk 😍👍
🤗🤗🤗🤗 that is all I have to say!!! So in love with how clean and consistent he is!
I subscribed. Love your reactions! Thanks
So Amazing!!!!!
I think this is my new favourite video. Loved your reactions to this. Portnoy just is something else, isn't he? He's probably from another planet.
This video is sooo amazing . Definitely check out more of his work with Neal Morse . Some incredible music
MIKE PORTNOY = drum genius
Of course I loved the outro and the crispness of his hits (so clean, awesome tone), but my favorite part was that tasty groove with the smaller snare and the cymbal trinkets and what not. Great feel. Chops and tastiness 🤟
a replica of that kit was a prize for a contest for the in constant motion DVD . lucky guy who got the prize
I'm only half way through the video and I've ordered this album !!
I have huge regard for Mike Portnoy one of the rare "modern" drummers ( yes I'm very old ) I can relate too..
Never heard of Neal Morse but it sounds right up my alley ! ( easy tiger!) ..
Thanks to your patreon for bringing this to light 👍🏻☮❤
Neal Morse is one of the greatest songwriters ever and is the person Mike has recorded the most albums with. Check out Neal Morse Band, Transatlantic and Flying Colors.

Thank you Carlos appreciate the info..
I only know Mr Portnoy from the obvious place , so it's great to hear new(to me) music from him and Neal Morse ..
CD is arriving tomorrow and I can't wait to hear more ..
Thanks again 👍🏻☮❤peace and love brother 😊
You are in for a treat. One is my favorite album by Neal (and maybe my favorite album in general). Similarly awesome is Sola Sciptura, but their other albums are also great.
@@juliusalbe2070
well the music is fantastic bit I'm not a Christian so it's a bit heavy going lyrically..
My band mate is Christian so I'll give it to him ..i respect his faith and beliefs so he'll be happy with the gift..
Peace and love brother 👍🏻☮❤
What a magnificent beast! Already subscribed a while back. Keep up the good work! ; )
Aquiles Priester - Temple of Hate is a good one.
Honestly Portnoys drumming on OSI is super groovy. Its probably some of his most over looked playing from his many projects. Theres so many cool little bits and breaks thats just so different from his normal projects. Its worth a listen.
I've watched this review several times, first time I've seen this comment. I couldn't agree with you more! MPs OSI work is awesome! Plus the added astheitic that it's a reunion w/ KevMo. Superb work! I also love Gavin Harrison's work with OSI. Just an awesome, groovy concept OSI is... 🤘
He is one of the most complete drummers of my list and the #1 of my top 5.
Is not like those who rely on their double bass drums to sound heavy, he can play a ballad and a very complex prog metal song, I really like him.
Great video man, I'm already a subscriber. 👍🏼
And he always makes it look so effortless...
Yup he's just having fun!
ok,ok, I subscribed, the tears can stop now :) P.S. my god I forget how precise he is, but how easy he makes it look...
You did the right thing!
Thumbs up!
The whole ONE album is just jaw-dropping.
Literally insane
14:03 foward and bacward rolls .great !
you are the man
His tom sound alone, enjoying Dream Theater awhile back convinced me to purchase Tama Starclassic maples for myself.
🔥🔥🔥 DAMN!
It’s impossible not to smile while watching him drum…
Awesome mike😀👍oh and andrew love your channel.
Glad you like the channel Dave!
I enjoy the proggy melodic mike, TA has some killer drum parts.
No worries Sir... I've been subscribed for a long time now, ever since watching the first couple. 😉
I miss so much this guy in DT
It's Portnoy's fault I have way too many splashes, stacks, bells and effect cymbals in my collection. Big influence for me mid to late 90's.
I can relate. Back when I was a kid and he was my main influence I drooled over octobans & stacks... never could afford them at the time haha
hit the like button hes doing the splits lmaooo love your videos. was an easy sub after the first video of yours that I saw.
Cheers again Roonoo, yet another great patron pick and reaction from ur goodself, I've read that portnoy was a massive fan of Neil pearts and Mike has maintained that Neil always helped and encouraged young and upcoming drummers back in the day and the way he orchestrates his parts I think comes from a similar Peart way of writing parts but I might be wrong, anyhoo, I loved it and kudos to tama drums and miking of the kit, who wouldn't want to sit behind that, imagine what yoyoko would sound like in that kind of pro studio, let alone me! 🙄🤣 Anyway big love u krazy kiwi, from the UK DRUM MASSIVE x
Hello to you Andrew, Winery Dogs unleashed in Japan is a great live performance with Mike on drums
So awesome 😎
The singing part, This is Neal's owd Gentle Giant !!!! : D
My first experience of Portnoy on UA-cam was the loudwire series of him playing kids drums, so yes seems to be a pretty funny and genuine guy
Mike Portnoy have so many variations that is fun to listen to.
Suggestion: Listen to "The passage of time" from the upcoming LTE-album.
Ps. I also think you would like Marco Minneman in Aristocrats. Blues F*cker, live from Mexico is absolutely amazing.
The Blues F*ckers solo will never cease to leave me speechless, would definitely recommend that one
Takedown by MP. Fecking nailed it. Love it.
A great way to wake up on a Monday morning morning.
Great to hear Chris!
Beast mode
That outro, Oh my God
So much to say about this- it SOUNDS like Portnoy, thats a good thing. if you didnt know who was drumming, give it 10-20 sec. you'd know
it sounds like a 1970's prog ELP- Crimson tune, thats a really good thing....
Last week I "discovered" Rush. This week I "discovered" Portnoy. I have no idea how these guys do this.
What do you mean?
You have much more to discover. Enjoy!
some nice gospel groove right there
I had a Remo CS on my relatively cheap Yamaha snare and i LOVED it. It sounded fat and had a great bounce to it.
Great snare head!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums such a great head, made a cheap snare sound and fel fantastic. 💪🏼
Andrew, please react to "The great Debate" video...his creativity on that music is out of the box!
Surprisingly, in concert, he plays the ending differently almost every time.
It's funny how some of your reactions where syncronized with mine watching this HAHAHAHA
