Join Rep. AOC, Amy Spitalnick of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, and Stacy Burdett for a virtual discussion on antisemitism and the fight for democracy.
Thank you, Representative. I had considered myself a progressive for decades but have not been able to do so for the last several months due to hateful rhetoric from far too many against Jews, in general. And, this division, is, as you say, bad for democracy. I don't know how we get past it right now, but efforts like this are clearly a positive step.
May no identities be placed before our shared humanity. This is not to say there is something wrong with identities. It is to say there is something wrong with placing one's own identity before your own humanity or another person's humanity.
5:33 As an atheist, I see a parallel between antisemitism and anti-atheist bigotry in that sense that anti-atheist hatred doesn't fit neatly into racial categories because atheists do not necessarily visibly look different than the societies they live in and so discrimination against them is less obvious to the unkeen eye. Atheists also tend to be on average more well-educated, left-leaning, and wealthier than the societies they inhabit, making them easy targets for faux populists as well as for old-school bigots. And it is shocking how in polls people are more likely to say that atheism should be disqualifying for the presidency more than any other religious affiliation. And claims of anti-atheist bigotry are often dismissed or downplayed by pointing to the admittedly horrific crimes of officially atheist states as justification for anti-atheist bigotry.

Both can be true at once. Like during the Cold War many leftists ferociously condemned the atrocities of Communist states while condemning with equal ferocity the brutal repression of the leaders of Western states that used the specter of Communism to enact brutal repression on their (usually left-wing) political opponents.

I imagine AOC's finances would be VERY interesting to see if she was completely transparent. Hopefully she loses her position as de facto representative of progressives soon.
You don’t get to restrict talk about anti-semitism to only the context of the current events. Anti-semitism is where the far-left and the far-right have met for lunch during my entire life. (I am 69) I witnessed anti-semitism that was mostly verbal but I saw a ‘From the River to the Sea’ sign at the Bernie Rally in Washington Square and photographed it. I heard the typical tropes at every Bernie rally I attended in NYC, and that was every one of them that occurred. (I’m 69). I do believe that you yourself, AOC, contributed to the weaponization of the situation with your own actions and statements on the current event. I can’t express how disappointed I was/am as a financial supporter of your campaigns for office. I’m not all that confident that you’re going to be successful in walking that back, but I appreciate the effort you are making to do so. So many groups that I have supported via the civil rights movement from when I was young up to today have rewarded my lifetime of dedication to ‘equality for all’ have betrayed my dedication and lifetime of efforts. I have been betrayed by my allies, and felt/feel betrayed by you and the Progressive movement.
What you describe is not anti-semitism. Israel has continued to ethnically cleanse more of Palestine. Israel just murdered hundreds of innocent Palestinians. Israel has murdered tens of thousands of innocent Palestinians. Criticizing a government committing a genocide is not anti-semitism. A lot of Jewish people have agreed. IDF attacks Jewish people that speak out against Netanyahu butchering innocent Palestinian kids.
Signs at Bernie rallies are exactly what they are talking about here, and are NOT something Bernie supports. He is Jewish himself, believes in Israel's right to exist, and knows that being against the extreme right-wing tactics of Netanyahooo (that was just as right-wing when he served in the US congress WITH Bernie and Biden) is what Bernie is against. NOT Jews, Judaism, or the right for Israel to exist. Bernie is Jewish AND not an anti-semite. Its much more the case that this country currently would sadly never allow a Jewish president, no matter how many vocal supporters Bernie has or any of the other Jewish candidates, such as Maryann Williamson and Jill Stein. There will always be just enough supporters that in the privacy of the voting booths, will quietly choose a christian candidate instead of any Jewish one, to swing the election away from them.

Netanyahooo and Trump are BOTH extreme, right-wing authoritarians, trying to get rid of all checks on their power - as Netanyahooo did by trying to get rid of Israel's Supreme Court's ability to rein him in, and Trump WILL do in 2025, with "Project 2025".
Your type of false analysis, hence your "disgusting" reaction is the type of thing that gets morons like Trump elected.

Jews should have a homeland, I believe that is fair. But they have it. I believe that Israel and Jews worldwide have a right to defend themselves against violence and injustices. But they, and any other people, should not have that by way of genocide.

You are not a true progressive unless you condemn the genocide in Gaza and the apartheid of the West Bank but also antisemitism everywhere (and by this I mean hatred against Jews for being Jews, not mere criticism of some Jews' views on Israel). As MLK said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice anywhere," and we are seeing that every day, as the enemies of freedom everywhere cynically use the language of civil rights and antisemitism by some pro-Palestinian protestors to justify brutal repression and genocide.
@englishlit0171 Only Muslims can have countries in the region?
Jews can't as they are not as acceptable or wanted as muslims in that region since the Romans kicked them out and used them as slaves to build the coliseum in 70AD, and muslim ancestors swooped in and took over?

Plenty of Nazi & Soviet propaganda cartoons to prove it.

As an atheist, I oppose all theocracies, including but not limited to Israel. If you have a positive relation to a theocracy, there are spaces where I will welcome you and spaces where I will not welcome you. Spitalnick defines this as "anti-semitic" because that lady is a nutjob who conflates antizionism and antisemitism despite her claims that she distinguishes the two. I am a leftie living in Germany. I am shocked by the number of leftist public figues whom I respect deeply behave like anitisemitism on the left does not exist. Thank you, AOC, for starting a much needed converstation in your comminity.
Wish you had this same energy for Palestine and those who protest in support of it. How far you’ve fallen. It’s amazing that as a Puerto Rican that you don’t see the hypocrisy in your words and can’t equate the plight of Palestine to the plight of your own people on the island right now.
Your message is beautifully spoken, but it has no basis in reality. You don't have an outraged-energy meter. It's just your opinion and it's coming across as you telling a woman of color how to physically and verbally express her passion on the issues according to how YOU have prioritized them. Are you even her constituent?
Puerto Rico has been abused for centuries by America, but to pretend that the genocide in Gaza is the same as Puerto Rico's situation is just absurd.
Because Palestinians didn't pay her off.

Hello from China

AOC for potus
It was so bizarre to see the disconnect between your intro Alexandria and what your guests said. I assume you made this video in good faith & with good intent, but platforming these 2 particular individuals did the opposite. It shows a naivety on your behalf about how whenever there is international focus on Israels violence against Palestinians, folks like these guests will centre discussions about antisemitism that effectively interferes with or completely sidetracks that focus. Its imperative any conversation about *actual* antisemitism understand and avoid this.
Both can be true at once. Like during the Cold War many leftists ferociously condemned the atrocities of Communist states while condemning with equal ferocity the brutal repression of the leaders of Western states that used the specter of Communism to enact brutal repression on their (usually left-wing) political opponents.
Semitic deals w/DNA.
it has *NOTHING* to do with religious affiliation.
Shame on you.
"Accusations of anti-semitism against women of color"? That is a pretty specific concern. Considering that your recent anti-semitic remarks were made after this interview, it sounds like you were just looking for permission.
From the River to the Sea is not antisemitic in and of itself. The Arab version is though.
You are sweet and can't imagine such evil but Jesus said behold I send you out as sheep amidst the wolves. Be ye therefore wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
Commending @repaoc8965 for this dialogue with the acknowledgement that this is a complicated discussion - rather than her colleague’s simplistic determination that Jews need to decide if they are pro genocide or anti genocide.
Indeed. During WWII, it was such a difficult choice: am I for the Holocaust or against it, or is there a more nuanced approach that would still permit the killing of Jews, socialists and LGBTQ+ people?
