  • Listen to what a hearing doctor says about different kinds of in-ear hearing monitors and why you should use a custom in-ear monitor vs just a standard in-ear monitor.
    Why are Custom In Ear Monitors very important? The Wiring of Westone is the best in the industry. Most people do not know how to make excellent ear impressions for In-Ears which is very different than making impressions for any other reason. What are the reasons for In-Ear Monitor failures? How to know which ones to choose.

    Eeeh. Universals offer up to 25 dB reduction, too - not every model, but it's common. Scans work well if the person operating the equipment is skilled - just like you need to be for foam impressions. Musicians ripping their shells apart at the cable does not mean the two-pin connector is at fault. If's just blatant misuse and the drummer's fault. Driver count should be a very secondary thing to look for.

    This is great fir people who don’t know how to respect their CIEMs. As someone who’s had them for awhile I’ve never broken a 2 pin connector.

    • @DrScottYoung

      Funniest break? Mat Donaldson, violent drummer and wonderful owner of DrumWorld in Tulsa, put his stick, inadvertently, between his ear and the two pin (the In Ears at the time) and broken them in half. I see tons of OTHER two pin repairs all the time. It's what we see doing more In Ears than most practices in America do.

    Everything he said is true, except the bit about 2pin vs MMCX. I've been in the iem environment for years. These mmcx connectors are more prone to breaking than the 2 pins. Both still break but the mmcx break more, often they start cutting out and getting a weak connection, they are only used to allow for a swivel.

    • @HearingSolutionCtr
      @HearingSolutionCtr  2 роки тому

      Dude all I would say is YES they both break. I can't replace the two pin in office like I can replace the swivel based connection when they break! But I am happy for you using them all the time!

      Actually I've never used a pair of in ears that have mmcx connectors but never had a single problem with my 2-pin-connector ones either. I've used a single cable for nearly 3 years and it's still fine
      The problem is the in ears themselves, if you remove the cable and put them in a lot they will start to loosen and lose their stability
      I never knew why Westone only used mmcx connectors on their in ears until now, turns out they are just easier to repair so you don't have to get the the whole cable replaced when only one side goes south

      @@shirakuyanai4095 From your perspective I respect your statement. Now, consider from the side of an Audiologist that deals with hundreds of In Ears from different types of musicians. Kinda similar to a guy who sings a solo at his church who raps with you about the numerous times you have been on stage...you will see that comparison. Thanks

    Tbh mmcx is also quite a pain because the connection gets weak over time. I think 2 pin is better but both have obvious flaws. Etymotic got mmcx right. They put a tab on the housing of the earphones that keep the mmcx connector from swiveling and that will help keep it stable and strong.

    • @DrScottYoung
      @DrScottYoung 3 роки тому

      The problem, as an Audiologist having to take care of things for the patient, is the repair. Two pin breaks inside of the molding and coupling then it takes an out of warranty repair (if that company works with them anymore) to fix it. Westone design means (like I did Thursday with a patient who showed up at the clinic) them buying a $50 cable and they walk out the door with it working fine! That's how I consider the world.

    • @chrisstroud60
      @chrisstroud60 3 роки тому

      @@DrScottYoung I see. I never tried westone but I would think their stuff is tested and don't have quality control problems. I'm also not a musician. I like that the earphones like musicians use go in deep and blocks out the world. It helps keep the volume nob down to a safe limit. Etymotic is basically ear plugs with studio quality sound.

    • @HearingSolutionCtr
      @HearingSolutionCtr  3 роки тому

      @@chrisstroud60 Westone was struggling in quality here in the last year to tell you the truth. But the In Ear division in total was purchased by Lucid Audio who wants to resurrect them with the tech to make it work better. I am excited for that future. When you put them deep, you stop as much as 31dB in your ear from outside sounds if impressions are done by an Audiologist who knows how to make super deep impressions. All non-custom molds or buds do is block maybe 7-12 dB...roll up plug buds only give maybe 15dB of blockage of outside sounds. Very important because musicians listen to the world a LOT louder than others do.

    Can’t say I’m a big fan of mmcx connectors. It’s a repurposing of an antennae connector that isn’t meant to be physically stressed. 2pin connectors are really old school, but with recessed connectors they don’t spin around like mmcx. Now T2 connectors are more made for iems with their gasket, ip67, and tested 2k plug/unplug cycle

    • @DrScottYoung

      And unfortunately many of the manufacturers have two or three pins connectors!

    I do have the Weston E6, they immediately made big difference once received mine have 6 drivers which is plenty for any professional situation and I only use them in home studio; no luck with any in ears tried before those but also the price is steep; at the time I got mine back in 2018 they were $1300.00+ tax, took about 3 weeks well worth the wait, I have only used them a handful of times since; no more bleed of the drums no matter how hard hit it, the whole mix is there; I was then looking at the UE Pro18 or the other top of the line and those are even more expensive the top of the line coming with 8 drivers! if I was going to play with the Rolling Stones then sure I would justify the expense and i have seen even more expensive ons @ $3500 at Sweetwater! if I had the $$$ for it, I would love to compare and hear the differences if any!

      E6 is a great product...E8 isn't much different. But here's the problem with online companies...you have to get the impressions and make sure you ship it then make sure you get the order right. Find a local place to get it all done together. Cheaper and they take care of shipping. All cheaper and all works better.

    • @fireyourrocketts
      @fireyourrocketts Рік тому

      @@HearingSolutionCtr Yes, they are actually the E60 model with 6 drivers, when I ordered them online Weston sent me the kit and details to go to audiologist who took the impression and that was mailed back to them, in 3 weeks I received the set and they fit perfectly; I understand it all depends heavily on how those impression are taken, I would guess all reputable companies follow the same; put the order online, one can customize it like I did mine, impression kit and a lost of approved doctors are sent, once taken send it back and all is included in the price paid; these are rather expensive. I believe I paid $1300+ for mine and seen them for more than 2k and even more; always wondering what the stars use the most as far as brand goes but the effectiveness of it all parts from how good the mold is and how they fit.

    I'm gonna have to disagree with you sir. I know that the in ear with two pins can break but if the item is properly fitted I don't see why the pins would break off. Unless the iems are being mishandled. Also I've had iems with mmcx break..... So not a fan of the mmcx connector.

      The only in ears I do are custom perfectly fitted...done two and rounded connectors. Sorry but the two pins break like crazy all the time. They break off in the female section and cannot be pulled out without going back to the manufacturer.

      @@DrScottYoung I see. I could see that happening. But I find it odd that the pins are breaking all the time. Seems very unlikely. What is the data like? how many times has this happened? It just seems strange that pins are breaking? Does happen while the owner is wearing them? Or outside of wear? Oh well, I guess your the doctor right? Im just a guy on the internet.... I mean its not like you are saying that because you have something to sell.....

      @@oscarsanchez298 Listen, I think about products and the problems they cause. It happens a lot in my clinic. If you were on my side of the fence you would see the number of repairs I had with two pins. I am sorry you are upset about this, don't take it personally. When it comes to products, I am very dispassionate. If they do what they are supposed to do, GREAT...once they start causing breakage then we shy away from them. I could name hearing aid manufacturers that are on my "pitch off the side of the cliff" list as well!
