    For future builds some short scrap 2x4’s screwed into the rim joist can be used as temporary ledger boards to support the plywood panels.

    Hey Jay, Long time builder and im watching and you're doing the right thing, when building an addition you want the structure plum/level and attach it to the non level/plum structure, sheet as normal and when you do the finishing touches it will all work out. Trust me it will look great.

    Hi Jay! Great content and I love your channel. A very wise idea to run a light synthetic oil for your generator. Just to let you know that you can buy other brand names for a lot less money, especially when they go on sale ($40 - $45). Another hint to save on gas consumption is to turn on the eco switch on your generator. It will run at idle and when there is a demand for power, it will automatically rev up to meet that demand. Congratulations on your channel and keep the videos coming!

    37 years carpenter here. The house side miners wedge on top plate between existing house to plum your side walls. In other words a word I coined working in century old buildings. "Fur it out". Then you can fill the gap with a foam roll batting then caulk it. If you do it right you will hardly see it. As your video progresses it looks like you arrived at same conclusion well done pardner well done ❤

    Hi Jay love your channel, if you have power out lets in your cabin, you should be able to just plug the power bank into a spare out let and it should power the cabin, double check with an electrician, it can be done in Scotland, unless you wiring is done differently.

    The longest lasting lessons, are the ones learned the hard way ! You can fill that gap, with something solid, not spray foam, take your time and cut a 1 peice perfect fitting shim, or wedge. Secure new wall and shime to excisting cabin wall, and go from there. Stay out of the hot sun !

    I got a good tip from a small engine shop last summer. At least, I think it is valid. I assume they know what they are talking about. Suppose you want to buy high-octane gas for your small engine equipment. You go to the gas station and select the high-octane gas. Pump about 7 gallons of gas into your vehicle before filling the small gas container. He said the gas lines may be full of regular gas from the previous customer, and to ensure that you are using high-octane gas for your small engine equipment, pumping 7 gallons into your vehicle will do the trick.

    Im sure you know that in case of an emergency you could also turn on your gas oven and open the door to heat. My Mom would never have anything but a gas stove and oven because of power outages. My Granny used to tell us stories of how they placed her and her twin brothers cradle in front of the oven as newborns in Utah to stay warm. Safely

  • @jerrymorris5818
    @jerrymorris5818 2 години тому

    For the gap in your wonky wall, where it connects to your new addition. Just fill it with some expansion foam at a later date…. It’s structurally fine the way it is. Also, the blocking you put between the windows really isn’t required.. if you’re concerned about window, breakage windows are normally rough framed, at least a quarter to a half inch larger than the window on all sides then expansion foam insulators the gap. The gap also allows for any possible residual movement in the structure..

    I was looking around that region (well I flew over it in flight simulator) from Yellowknife to Lake Prosperous, dang it looks so beautiful even in a simulated world. Bad thing my plane gathered too much ice -29C and I crashed somewhere trying to get back from Prosperous. Anyhow! I am up for this video, 4 minutes in and I already know I will enjoy.
    About the generator, why don't you try and put it inside a hole somehow, to have it at least a few degrees above air temperature? Maybe the ground in there is rock hard...don't know.

    I think another visit by your sister is called for, just sayin'... That said, your work is stellar and, perhaps, should become the anchor for the entire cabin, but that would mean a rebuild of the original structure and the $$$ that would come with it. Sorry, my friend, just keep doing the best you can with what you have, and we'll be with you!

      LOL more like 1.5 of what he did ... 15f and 1in of snow thats -9c and 2.54 cm ... what we call a dusting .. and it is practically shorts weather ... until it is in the -20c's and 200cm ... we dont worry about the snow much ... thats almost 10 inches deep in one snow fall btw ... what americans get is truly laughable when they say their light snow is a blizzard ...

    Your roof trusses on your addition. Why don’t you run your truss from the front of your addition to the existing eve . Fixing a number of problems. You could then eliminate them windows in the front on the second level.

  • @Kaboom-0623
    @Kaboom-0623 Годину тому

    to fix the discrepancy ... shim the cabin to fit to the new addition built plumb and straight ... you will need to slap some expanding foam in the gap after you have the side walls covered ...
    the window header gap if you MUST use plywood sandwich it between solid wood parts ... so the header needs to be on BOTH sides ... to counter the sheer force the plywood will experience ... Sheer as in sliding a deck of cards sideways ...
    build the new level and square ... adjust at the joints to the old moved structure ...

    • @Kaboom-0623
      @Kaboom-0623 Годину тому

      if you had a non penetrating way to fasten a straight edge to the corners you could circular saw the plywood facing to level and butt join then ... but short of poking holes in your wall with screws ... shimming the gap is the better option

    • @Kaboom-0623
      @Kaboom-0623 Годину тому

      in future ... when adding on to an existing building ... always bring a sheet of 4 x 8 1/8 paneling with your wood ... this becomes shims for making wall edges level and plum ... you cut a 2x4 wide section off an edge and as tall as needed leaving the less than 1/8in part empty ..
      in case you are wondering that's 12 sections 2x4 wide and 8 feet long .. perfect for a lot of fixing

    • @Kaboom-0623
      @Kaboom-0623 54 хвилини тому

      Umm Jay ... the siding goes at least halfway down the face board at the bottom ... FYI ... this locks the wall to the floor frame and makes it less likely to bend and twist ...

    • @Kaboom-0623
      @Kaboom-0623 53 хвилини тому

      also the go sideways not up and down ... again it is for twist stopping ...

    • @Kaboom-0623
      @Kaboom-0623 46 хвилин тому

      oh btw get puffy 3 more sets of booties for camping ... one to wear one drying one cooling down from drying and one ready to wear ... change em when you go in for meals or a decent stay of any length ...and get the doggo a batman cape and hat ... be funny seeing the cap fluttering as he runs his behind off ;) .... ohhh add a bell to his collar too ... tells you where he is and keeps animals warned he is around so they stay away more reliably
