- How to apply Silver Coating on a metal roof. The key is in mixing or stirring up the Aluminum particles that are in the asphalt base. This takes time and you need a good paint stirrer attached to a drill.
Once you have it well stirred, then you can use a 3/4 nap roller and roll the Silver Coating onto the metal as if you would do any painting - Навчання та стиль

Thank you for the information, have a great day.
Varnish based aluminum paint is also good. Very smooth bright finish.
One year later.... It goes on smooth and looks good, initially. After only 1 year the finish is gone. No sheen left. Used Farrell Calhoun. Now it appears its up to me to keep my customers happy
Loving your videos....thanks for the tips!

Hey doc also I have found out that when mixing if you can use a couple buckets mix as originsl bucket for about 10 minutes pour half into 2nd bucket then the rest into the 3rd bucket then add quart of paint thinner to each total of half gallon per 5 gal of product (5: .5)ratio this will make things alot easier
your videos are very good. Thank you.
Thank you sir, excellent advice, you definitely saved me some tremendous headaches and wasted time, Lord bless you and all your loved ones, amen.🙏🏻
Thanks for all those tips
Man those style of metal roofs are very difficult. I use the siliconized elastomeric with fleece on the joints. I enjoy your videos. Good stuff.

You Are The Doctor
This is the explanation I was looking for. Thank you. I have a crimped metal roof that has a thousand layers of sealant/coating, and now patches/chunks are coming off. I don't know of any leaks but I'll be checking for that before I do anything. Can you explain when/why you would use fibered vs non-fibered?
Great info. Thanks for posting.
You are welcome. Sorry for the late reply. I hope you all the best.
I going to start a sheet metal repair business, thank you sir.
great helpful video.....👍
Thank you very much for the information .
I liked this dude
Thanks doc. How long will the fleece patch last if it isn't protected? Did you paint protect that rusty roof you patched?
I love your videos
Thanks
What sprayer you recommend for applying aluminum roof coating on steel roof
Thank you. Very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Question. I have a 50 year old metal roof that is long strips of steel each about 12” wide bent in U shapes and the edges are curved so they hook together and each piece is added or removed by sliding into place. The roof is in great condition but if there’s very heavy rain water tends to seep through the hooked connections,Just a little, and drips inside garage. Could i use Henry’s roof patch (in caulking tube) to fill in that seem and would it be a good idea to coat with the silver coating?
Hello, nice Video. I just had a Modified Bitumen Roof installed on my Dormer (no granulars ). How long after install should I wait until I silver coat it for the first time ? Someone once told me I should let it "weather" first. Am I better off silver coating it or using that white elastomeric coating instead ? Also a coating with fibers or without fibers ? Thanks !!!
Do you apply a silver coat to modified bitumen roof?
You rock sir!
THANKS SO MUCH GREAT INFO !!!
Question- I have a house on the beach- the paint constantly has rust coming through on the deck areas where the bolts & screws are. I saw a house that had aluminum on it- the whole house- do you think I can use this roof stuff to paint the house? It would be fine if it stayed Bright Silver as it's a wedding venue- and I can live with that-
If it's a bad idea...why would it not work? At least on the decks if nothing else.
Gracias por su ayuda soy de Albuquerque NM God bless you
What paint should I use on a galvanized grain bin with some rust
I have a 6- pitch roof and is two storey up. What is the best foot wear other than rigging coarse grit sand paper on my shoes for purchase?
Is like to use a sprayer because of the ease due to my physical limitations and number of gables to maneuver around.
Good information.
Can this product go over painted metal roofs
Best way to apply? Does rust on tin need to be sanded before applying ?
Any tips to coat a new plywood roof on a small shed
Thanks for the info

I want to paint my roof . I want to buy that product . Have one question : the roof is rusted . Should I avoid rusted or not?
Can it be applied using a spray gun?
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmYou're the best teacher! Thank you so much
hhheeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Thanks
I love it ..... plain speak the truth !

Thank you for this video. I wonder about applying a Henry fibered aluminum roof coating onto EPDM rubber. Would the coating interact badly with the roofing?
You can not apply an Asphalt based coating unto EPDM synthetic rubber. It will not work.
never do that
it's not compatible with EPDM
I like it when he said "sew". that's the proper way to pronounce it. 98% of humans don't pronounce it properly.
This is a very good points, and thanks for everything, About the Fiber glass in the Metal roof how you can treat it, to prevent the water to come from . Thanks
you are welcome
Is this waterproof?
Thank you for the video sir.
I did a modified bitumen torch down on a 1 in 12 sloped covered walk and have two places where I torched too much and stepped on the granules. The granules stuck to my shoe and pulled off and away from the modified bitumen. How should I repair this?
The ceramic granules are gone and that spot is low. I have a gallon of turbo poly seal, the fleece and a pint of the aluminum coating from Bergstrom Industries. Can i use some of the poly seal, the fleece, and aluminum coating as a filler to patch in these two areas? Can the aluminum coating also be applied to the outflow at the seams of the modified bitumen to make the color more uniform?
Thank you.
Naas, I just watched another of your videos and see you putting the turbo poly seal over the torch down core you cut for demonstration. I will do the same for the two repairs I have. Thank you!

Thank for all the info but i still have a question can this aluminum coat go over metal roof that comea from factory painted for example the metal roof on my house is green but thats the way the panels came from the store
Yes you can paint over that paint
Hi! I love your advice, thank you. I have another question. I have an untreated tin roof that is starting to have some serious rust spots. I don't have any leaks that I can seem to find. What do u suggest for how to treat my roof? Should I end up using a primor and painting it? If so what products do u recommended?
Also, if possible I'd love for the roof coating color to be white. Just don't want to put something on there that will break down and cause pinhole problems like seen in your other videos.
@@jessielynn7337 I am really not the expert on treating metal roofs. I can repair any roof. Your best bet is to do thorough research on what is the best way to go.
My thought is to use Karnak 66 brush grade and roll coat it with that. Then after several months to cover it with Super Silicone Seal.
The other thought is to cover the flat part, not the standing seam with Super Silicone Seal.
This is just my 2 pennies worth of info.
What you should not do is to cover it with paint, acrylic, paint. Any type of latex, acrylic paint will be bad.
Sorry that I don't have enough experience in this field. Take care
As I look for info on a Asphalt paper roof and Silver paint. Your video was Super-Helpful. Telling me it is a reflective material not a Sealer. As I prepare for the materials I need it is a good weekend Project. Most cleaning least painting. thanks for the sound advice Home Depot is the place I must rely on. thanks. ((104th Like)
I am glad I could help. Thanks for your compliments. Check out the Turbo Poly Seal videos for fixing leaks before you apply the Silver coating.
Thanks!
Does the bergstrom siliconized rubber require this aluminum topcoat? It's it uv resistant?
12dollacigarette it is UV’s resistant. No coating required
Thanks. I always was under the assumption that the aluminum coating was to protect from leaks. Now I know better. Thank you!!
I am glad it helped. Don't let me mislead you. Any coating or paint or even bubble gum can stop small pinprick leaks.. But Aluminum Asphalt coatings are to be used primarily for protection against UV's, hence the Aluminum flakes in it. The asphalt is the bonding agent.
@@FlatRoofDoctor it all makes sense. I look at the roof and there’s aluminum coating. But you can see the black tar on top of the aluminum coating. So it was placed wrong. By the previous owner. So I need to fix that! Thanks!
@@tchavezjr I don't think "placed' wrong. It is possible that the content was not properly stirred. The aluminum is heavier than the asphalt and needs to be stirred in the container often while painting it on.
I hope you happen to check this soon, as I am expecting warming temps soon, here in February! Nowhere on the can nor their website do they say what is the minimum temperature at which this may be applied. Could you please reply with that information?
I have used this product in temperatures of 20 degrees and up. I don't think it is wise to do any roofing below the 20's. Only in emergency
Why buy the non fiber?
Thank you sir,. I have a question I have modified bitumen membrane with granules installed a week ago. Whicht product can I use to protect it? I see Karnak 298,169,97 and Eterna 100% silicone. .Please advise.
Thanks
The ceramic granules is the protection for the Torch Down Rubber. No need to protect the granules also.
Thank you sir.
I was going to use bitumen on my metal garage roof. Does this silver paint help water proof it
No, silver coating is for protection against rust and UV's. You need to make sure you got the roof sealed against leaks before you do such a coating
I just had a Firestone insulated rubber roof installed, and the roofing company finished up the job with Karnak 169 as you were using in your video. I was wondering how long before I should have the roof re-coated? I live in NYC if a locations weather is a factor in the re-coating time. Great video, very informative.
I assume the membrane is without granules. You can have it coated again when you see the coating wearing off about 15%.
@@FlatRoofDoctor it was a torch down roof as I had described in your video that compared the EPDM vs. a torch down.
I’m a roofer who does coatings in NYC id say it’s best to re coat after 15-20% wear.
I made the mistake and used an acrylic roof coating and after 1 year already starting to crack , what's the best way to get it off? I'm struggling to
Acrylic coating is the worst. I only take it off in areas like seams or fasteners. I use the claw of a hammer, torch flame, grinder, scraper and whatever works. Don't need to remove it from all the surfaces of the metal, just around the problematic areas
Also sir, could you mention the polyurethane coating that you used underneath the silver coating please?
Turbo Poly Seal. You can get that at bergstromm.com
Good morning. Good video always prep and prep the roof.
Why not use a sprayer?
No need to use a paint sprayer when I only doing small areas. A roller or brush will also put a thicker coat on and the rubbing effect will add to ensure better adhesion
Hello, Flat Roof Doctor. Thank you for your video. I have two questions about your video:
1) Could you please clarify why you recommend non-fibered paint rather than fibered paint for this kind of job? Many roofers suggest that fibered paint is stronger and provides better protection.
2) Why do you emphasize at 6:58 in the video not to apply the paint too thick? One would think that a reasonably thick coating might provide better protection. Is there a downside to a thick coat?
Thank you.
Nonfibered Aluminum Asphalt coating is meant to be used in a sprayer. The fibers will clog the nozzle. But, I have found that when rolling on the fibered coating, that it makes for uneven coating. It leaves clumps everywhere. I could be wrong in this case. Yes, common sense tells you that the fibers will make it stronger. But when you paint metal or any surface, the surface tension will give it strength. The metal is the strength, not the fibers. If you see the roof that I am standing on how clean and smooth that is, that is what I like. When you apply it to thick, it appears to me over time that it wants to bubble up and somehow those thick clump areas did not cure properly and pop loose. Again, I am not that smart, I could be wrong. It is just what I have seen in the past that let me say things like that.
i was thinking the same thing. and the answer is a good one. but for protection i would prefer fibered. but it isnt going to look very good. i just got mine done and i found one spot at the end where the brush was worn down. they ran out of brushes so did the last few strokes with a bad brush. this left clumps as roof dr said. after the clumps dried i picked at a few and it removes the whole dot. the only way to now fix this is to scrape that section and recoat and at this point ill prob do it myself instead of debating with the company who did it
@@FlatRoofDoctor how about brushing it on for less clumping of fibers, thinking of doing a small aluminum travel trailer roof ?, thankyou
These products (fibered) absolutely help seal and slow leaks. I have 25k square feet worth of flat roof I've maintain over 15 years.. use this on metal sloped, modified and asphalt based torch down. For TPO use duck coats.. Roofers DO NOT WANT PEOPLE TO SEAL THEIR OWN ROOFS ... I wonder why 😆
i got mine done in fibered and from far away it looks ok but the brush strokes look shitty in alot of spots. i watched the guys slowly try to do as best as they can but i have alot of slopes and peaks and phew what a hell of a job for anyone to do. also it came out closer to a white instead of a dark silver. which matches my house decent but i wasnt expecting it. they couldnt stir it every 5 minutes because it takes 10-15 just to get to the peaks. but overall even with the sloppy spots and nasty brush strokes the appearance is somewhat shit but the protection i can feel is there when i rub my hand on the roof
Excellent video. Can it be applied with an airless paint sprayer? Thanks
Absolutely, only the non-fibered one. That's why they make a non-fibered aluminum asphalt coating. The roof where this video was taken, was spray-coated many years before I got there. It really looked good and I was so surprised.
I really believe that this is the coating to use to prevent rust on metal roofs.
Thanks for your question
Take Care
