You know she's true old iron when she's got a pony motor! Great job getting this old girl up and running! Nothing is built as good as it was back then so we gotta keep saving this stuff. Thanks for doing your part, and I hope no one was hurt from engine guard falling off at the end!
The most favourite machine I have ever run was a 1968 D-7E. Thank God the pony had an electric start but that machine was a beast. You could haul it down so low you could count the cylinders popping off but it would just keep pushing. It had a leaky final drive that we put a special brew of 80-90 gear oil with a tube of grease mixed in to slow down the leaking.
A shot of ether early on would have started it 15 minutes earlier, When the pony motor is running and not not turning the diesel engine no coolant is going through the pony engine and it will get very hot very fast the Diesel engines water pump supplies the coolant to the pony motor
In the excitement Safety always gets over looked... but hey seems you survived and uploaded great video.. hope your dignity is still intact.. But I bet you will never forget to secure loose items again...
This was really awesome! I grew up in rural upstate New York close to the Canadian border, this made me miss my Canadian friends from the great white North! Beauty day, eh?!
The serial number is stamped into the rear of the cat on the very back plate where the winch would go. looks to be a 3T or very early 17A. I think I may have a shop manual
Why cat got rid of those pony motors I will never know. They were invaluable to get a diesel running in the arctic. Crank up the pony, go back in the cook shack for 20 minutes ,have a coffee then come out and engage the pony in low and get things rotating, go back in the cook shack, have a coffee and a donut then come out and fire the old girl up.Two big smoke rings later and you were ready to go!
Loved the mornings when the tracks were frozen and the crank handle kicked back and slammed your hand against the roll bar lol 😂 learned a whole new language
You turned your fuel on to soon. You need to give the starting engine time enough to warm the big engine. At least you didn't load it up with starting fluid.
Cat’s made good dozers I use get very frustrated starting them in my youth , don’t want anything to do these anymore now I put in the key start the machine and go to work case closed .
I was in my shorts one summer starting dads the magneto shorted out thru the tracks a shot of extreme electricity shot from my nuts out my ass it blew off my loggers hard had I was electro man for some time.and it was worse than getting hit by lightning years before.my dad couldn't stop laughing rip pops
I don't care what anyone says no computer = no problems not easily fixed that old cat will still run 50 years from now just keep engine from getting water in it and your good
Interesting start up all you need is providing you have fuel flow at injectors is to bring oil pressure up on half compression and then open it to full compression and it should start so simple. It will not start until oil pressure comes up and throttle is opened😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 I noticed your mate finally opened the throttle and it fired. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 good job its a learning experience
The ones that cranked through the side would cut your fingers off if it kicked back and your hand was wrapped around the crank. It could take fingers of if it hit a cleat or damn sure smash your fingers if it hit in between cleats
The 1945 Caterpillar diesel D7 tractor serial number 3T2707 was parked on a slight grade for decades. Once the massive 13.6 litre 4 cylinder D8800 engine fired up it caused the engine bonnet to slide across the top and crash down nearly injuring me and damaging my tripod and camera in the process.
Hey Mad Farmer, yeah there's a lot of b.s. out there when it comes to modern equipment and what to do with potentially good old machines. This D7 was destined to the metal recycle yard a long time ago but was immune due to its remote location. It was not worth scrapping due to high recovery and hauling costs associated with the fact it was a dead crawler machine. As a matter of fact, the fellow who informed me of this D7's location is a metal recycler himself and despite efforts, he was unable to get it running to track down the mountain and haul away. Most the iron I hoard isn't expensive or viable on a modern jobsite because lack of modern safety equipment and the EPA environmentalists. Too many pesky leaks and some factory drains that literally flow onto the ground.
There's nothing to read, it ain't rocket science. Three zones on the oil and fuel pressure gauges, red, white, and green. Green is good, red is bad - shut it off if you see red.
Man cranking doesn't know to crank nor does the one telling him lucky it doesn't kick back break his arm yea cranks better with fuel would not either around my old cats, was the throttle open or closed or no fuel
A very primitive poor design for starting large ci diesel motors,The IH gas start diesels were way superior in cold weather. Can you imagine having to do this every freezing morning in the 50's in the High Sierras?
Что-то долго в этот сотовский двигатель заводили надо было солярочку-то прокачать клапана на аппаратуре открыть воздух сбросить этот движок вообще хорошо заводится Нахрена вы капот-то на крышу положили горе Трактористы
Sorry but could you get a little more organized. Oh my goodness you act like you haven’t been around engines before. It was like watching larual and hardy
For those pony motors sure are pieces of crap what a horrible way to build an engine he is some total crappy built little motor to try and get your other engine to start.... And all that blues smoke boy that motor was burning more oil than anything I've ever seen and actually running that's the crazy part about it....the pony motor was so wore out that it made the other motor look good and it was putting out black smoke.
After a reluctant start, the donkey motor had the best work-out of its life! Well done, gentlemen. Many would have loved it and left long since.
That ending was hilarious. That old girl didn’t like getting woke up.
You know she's true old iron when she's got a pony motor! Great job getting this old girl up and running! Nothing is built as good as it was back then so we gotta keep saving this stuff. Thanks for doing your part, and I hope no one was hurt from engine guard falling off at the end!

What an ending, hope you're not hurt - it looked awesome, quite the reflexes
Thanks. I was fine other than some some skin off my hand. The camera viewfinder was buggered up and tripod leg bent.
@@AxleHildebrand do you still have this D7?
Impressive! But that ending sure was a shock! Wow
Good bonnet flying .classic so luv the health an safety .it's what fun .all about .the camera still Peking through exhaust hole 😂
The ending of your vid was a really unexpected twist , reflexes of cat Brilliant
Hi folks , made for great viewing 👌 well done she runs thanks for sharing 👍
Most intense old start cold start I've seen!
Very entertaining 👏. Had to watch the ending 30 times couldn't stop laughing. Glad you are okay.

I totally agree. Adding grease to slow an oil leak is a heck of a lot better than running low on oil.
A shot of ether early on would have started it 15 minutes earlier, When the pony motor is running and not not turning the diesel engine no coolant is going through the pony engine and it will get very hot very fast the Diesel engines water pump supplies the coolant to the pony motor
I was cringing the whole time thinking the same thing.
Ether.

Wow, what an action packed ending.
I found a D8 up in the gold fields; also, there is a army truck for sale here! 8000 almost complete
When they get the good fuel , eh. Hope that didn't hurt too much. You'll rember to put panel where it can't fall on you next time. Good work.

I have never owned a 3T but i owned a D 7D 17A and i now own a D 7 C 17A made in 1956
You turned your fuel on to soon. You need to give the starting engine time enough to warm the big engine. At least you didn't load it up with starting fluid.
Beat me too it
Didn't know that the D7's had pony motors, thought only the D8's and D9's had them. Learn something new everyday.
I know of a 1947 D4 with a pony motor. I would think other D’s of the era had them also.
Should have known about that. My bad.
D2s had them
Crazy mechanics!
😂😂😂😂KKKK MANEIRO, GISTEI DO FINAL DO VIDEO, ME RESPONDE SE SOBREVIVEU KKKKK
The very end was awesome
It was moment back in my cheerleading co-ed stunting with fliers. I just automatically went to save whatever was falling from above.
Sounds like you got the starting transmission and low need to put it in high to turn the motor or fast enough
That was real!

I'll bet that hurt!!
Hence the term "Blow it out your ass!"

I hope that guy did not get hurt. I don`t know if that is a 3T.
Got away lucky! 😀
Paint is good for sitting for 20years
A little heavy oil in each spark plug hole, take the battle out of it when starting pony.
My dad ran these things in s Texas when he was in his teens. I'm 50. Won a bet because I knew how to start a pony engine cat a few years ago...
The ones that cranked through the side would cut your fingers off if it kicked back and your hand was wrapped around the crank. It could take fingers of if it hit a cleat or damn sure smash your fingers if it hit in between cleats
Crazy they used those little gas pony motors to crank those old diesels
do have starters for those pony engines
Some yes. This WWII example does not have a charging system or electric pony starter.
@@AxleHildebrand so the whole thing is just magneto
Yes, pony electrical consists of only a magneto. There are no lights or electric accessories on this model dozer.
Yes l bought one, cost me four hundred bucks, worth it.
14:42 did you hear someone shout “incoming”🤣🤕
The final!! 😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲
Could've ended badly. Glad it didn't.
3 other ihc Dozers td 14 A and a td 18 along with my dads D4 7 u
Give u lads some tip get ur gob on pony fuel tank blow into it ule see fuel piss into carb
Wow what an ending is he ok?
I hope that guy wasn't hurt.
I got killed , almost . . Hilarious 😆
how is the headache?
The sky is falling!! The sky is falling!!!
Did he get hurt
Point the camera at the stack please 😊
great ending
I think you did everything right...
Except for the lose hood
I'm not so sure that's a D7. Looks small. Anyone??
Doesn't look like its been sat 25 days let alone years
Did you drain all the diesel? I have a d6 with 20 yr old diesel in it... I was thinking about trying to run it with the old diesel.
It'll be fine, make sure there's no water in the fuel tank and filters and run it.
The old timer left the fuel tank full to the top which kept the tank looking pristine inside.
No mechanics injured in filming this video?
Wouldn’t it be easier to just shovel the dirt by hand
Wow that was messy
...the ending = SpongeBob and Patrick fix a D7... 😁
WATCH THE GUY IN BLACK HOW HE HOLDS HIS MOUTH LOL IF HE ISNT ON METHAMPHETAMINE I DONT KNOW WHO IS.
I'm glad someone else noticed
I am 100% drug free and pausing in excitement. :)
the younger guy doesn't know what going on.
HAHAHA he woke a mad CAT...hope you did not get hurt by the hood ...but to tell you i like to have spit a mouth full of tea all over my laptop
😎 get back to the shop and paint it and clean it up 300000
😁👍
👍
Y'all don't know what starting fluid is
😲👍🤣
Throw some ether in there that'll work
Seriously!! It's a minute to a minute and a half starting procedure!!! You went way too long!!😳😳😳
its runs but almost kill him
😄😄😄😄😄
Fuck!!! What happen?

Why are there numerous expensive machines on UA-cam which seem to be lying unused for 20, 30, 40 years waiting for a start. Bs

Wot a disorganized lot!

Can't read them gages. No one can understand what they said
There's nothing to read, it ain't rocket science. Three zones on the oil and fuel pressure gauges, red, white, and green. Green is good, red is bad - shut it off if you see red.
That is not a d7. All y'all did was push the air through the fuel system an electric starter could not have taken that👆

try spending some money on a battery
No electric start on this old war tractor.
Guy in black doesnt know what hes doing it seems. End tumble waiting to happen. Its a wondet the pony put up eith ot

Loved the "snow tracks" too
Why ? ? ? It's a wore out, rusted, broke down, useless hunk of junk that almost broke your head at the end of the video......
I enjoy preserving old military machines and remembering those who fought for our freedom. That is why.
