I sparred a guy way taller than me and heavier but athletic. Fast hands. I head trouble in the beginning too as I rarely fight bigger guys.
My tips:
- Head movement all the time even if no strikes are thrown by him. Makes it harder to be hit by jabs. Not to Excessive. Just dont be completely static.
- if you slip dont just stand where you are or worse step back, but slip with a small STEP FORWARD(!) to get into your punching range/ pocket. This is a game changer! If you just slip and dont improve your distance you are still in the range where he can hit you, but you can't hit him. So you've won nothing beside not get hit in this exchange.
It takes a lot of courage at first to step into your bigger opponent, but once you do, you notice that you take away his straight punches like jab/ and cross and finally can land your punches.
I prefer overhands in longer distance and once in pocket adding hooks and uppercuts.
Once I'm in the pocket I don't break up until he does and just annoy him to death, so he does think twice throwing his long range shit.
Remember once you are in the pocket you have the advantage as you can hit him but he can't hit you.
- use fakes/feints a lot. I found faking a jab and anticipating his counter jab (which I dodge slip) to counter it.
Think of it this way: In that split second where his jab is at full extension and he starts to retract his arm, you have the opportunity to come forward with an attack by yourself without the fear of the jab (besides double jabs or some other rare stuff).
So for example:
1)Fake Jab
2) dodge counter jab from opponent 3) step forward + throw an overhand
Cheers.
I'm 1.80m (5'9) and was sparring with a guy who is 1.96 (6'4) it was pretty annoying since he also was pretty athletic and also smart, I couldn't look at his eyes because he was to tall and couldn't hit his face (definitely because of poor technique) and if I tried to get close to him he basically he just pushed me around like I was weightless
The only time where I started having less trouble was when I started to move my head around but it was pretty much on the end of the fight that I started doing that
same, been sparring with a dude who has 10 more inches and some extra weight, its really hard to get in short ranged, i just get teeped, he always steps backs and hooks, jabs 24/7, if i dodge a jab and try to counter i just get rocked with a leg kick, me no likey
@@GabrielSilva-yg2ws don't dodge and counter. Start dodging and attacking before his hand even reaches you.
Hello @whoknows8223 i sparred against a way bigger/taller opponent today and i got dominated hard. I am about 1.7 m and he was about 1,85 ish. Is there any video you would recommend besides this one or would you upload a video of the tip you mentioned?
I am really frustrated right now. I did Muay Thai for beginners since last year july and finally advanced to the intermediate class. We did not have any sparring in the beginner class. I really struggle against taller opponents and i dont have the stamina yet to do all that slippin and movin, especially after the third round. It kinda sucks because i want to do better and i know that i will in time but it sucks nonetheless because i want to change it now, i guess.
Thanks for the tips! I'm one of like 3 girls at my gym and always have to spar guys bigger and taller than me, sometimes it's really no fun.
Your a warrior tho! Don't quit. I respect anyone who does this kind of sport. I had my first day yesterday, and I consider myself decently athletic, but as a shorter guy I feel you as well! What a work out too jeez. Humbling
It's good practice against male predators! Keep up the good work 💪
That’s respect I have enough trouble sparring the blokes myself
🙏
I'm a tiny guy (55.5kg and 165cm) so almost everyone guy is heavier and taller than me except for 1 kid haha. fighting bigger opponents will level you up like crazy.
A reminder for self because goldfish memory.
Technique 1: step in left , head off centerline (outside his jab towards right) and counter jab.
Technique 2: step in right, head off centerline and counter rear upper cut up the middle.
Technique 3: step in right, head off centerline and counter overhead jab.
Technique 4(only when opponent tired / leaving hand out): step in left , head off centerline (inside his jab towards left) and counter overhand right hook.
The overhand left is perfect for me because though i stand orthodox, my left is my power hand, great video.
Very good! The next vídeo How to fight taller opponents - kicks, please!
Anderson Lazaro we covered this too. They'll be released at a later date so keep an eye out!
Its tough fighting taller people. I am only 5 foot 1 but i love sparring againest taller people because its so challenging
I guess you have no other choice unless you’re fighting a toddler

Don’t bully the wee man
It’s good he’s not letting height effect him
I'm around 6'2", but im gonna sparr with a guy from my gym who is around 6'9" 💀
Oh bro your gonna be a dog, it’s the same game plan every time then lol just spar all the time! I’m pretty short compared to most but I’m 5’7 every time I get fucked with by people 6’ plus I have so much fckn confidence now, bcus I’ve sparred soooo many people that height the game plans the same but once I have someone my height or smaller I can’t use my usual game plan throws me off a ton when I fight another pocket rocket lol
If they’re tall and know how to jab then it gets mad challenging
All fun and games until your opponent takes a step back..
I had a friend who was 178cm , and he fought with a 198cm guy in his pro debut. As unfair as it may seem, they're both in the same weight division.
His problem was the guy kept clinching him for knee strikes. And he can't hit him at all when he got clinched. His opponent kept repeating this many times, and my buddy couldn't do anything about it
Body clinch (belly) as tight as you can so there is absolutely no gap for knees between his and your body! Wait until ref comes to break up the clinch or muay thai dump him.
Your friend wasn’t taught properly then
He could’ve 100% done something
@@microwave4928 would it be possible for him to grab his opponent's knee and trip him when he's aiming for knee strikes?
@@alexong2542
He should come in close almost hip to hip to block off knees to the front of the body
Don’t try and negate the height difference, instead , use it
When you are shorter it is much easier to slip out of the clinch
He shouldn’t be inactive and throw knees to his opponents sides preferably targeting the liver
If you catch a knee step backwards while pulling it with you to put your opponent off balance , then , sweep and dump them
@@microwave4928 another question, is it possible to resort to infighting in boxing when a Muay Thai fighters clinches with you? I'm curious how Roberto Duran or Hank Armstrong would deal with Muay Thai clinches
this is good, but if your opponent smells your game he'll throw a 1-2 and you will get punished. sucks being short.
there are various ways to deal with a taller person I believe this video is specifically about dealing with the Jab
Big Member exactly mate. 👊🏾
Mike Zambidis
his is not an easy style to emulate tho….
I'm 5'11. Is that short?
I'm 176cm and just had my first muay thai session and was sparring against some one who was 192cm you can say I was struggling
That was very helpful! Thank you!
Dang this is what I need... I just spar with someone taller than me n I had a hard time with ranges so I was only goin for body shots n low kick...
Here's a tip for your sparring : try dodging your opponent's punches, also using teeps to mantain distance. The taller the person, the longer the range and the stronger the punch, BUT more travel time, that means it's gonna be easier to dodge or block.
Thanks for the tips my professor always putting me with taller people. So now I know what to expect. Keep up the good work!!
Always difficult sparring against taller opponents! Glad you found this of use!!
It’s different when fight faster.
ofc its different, that's why you practice again and again
that's why you sparr
Very useful, thanks!
This is cus damat'o style my favourite ❤❤
I´ll try this tomorrow on sparring. I have a sparring partner that is taller, and is difficult to me to figure him out.
very nice man!
Great
Nice video man
Surely when u step right to counter they would step back body kick to ur left side nah?
What happened to me when I was sparring some 6,3 dude
ok but I'm a southpaw... wouldn't stepping in the same way while throwing punches (some, not all) from the side you're talking about would be very difficult in my case?
Btw a lot of Muay Thai schools where I live feels a bit gangster/rough is it like that in most of Europe?
Not where i live. Everyone is very respectful. If someone harms or goes rogue on a lesser fighter he'll be punished by the trainer. Hell knock m out. So of course nobody shits with that
In real hard spar or real fight, experienced taller always keen you when you try to do things in the video, so just run first if you can😂😂
this is all dandy unless elbows are incorporated..
This might fast observation and attack
My first smokers next week against a guy with a 7in height advantage
I find leg kicks are good
💯
I'm trying to figure out where 6 downvotes came from.....
some unusually tall fighters
kheirallah mongy Adel 😂😂😂
boom
Take that!
No footwork dont ever bring your feet together stay on your heels dont be flat footed no head movment and counters on point but to land these counters and slip more efficiently you must have better footwork
Lol he can do the same with better efficiency, and after jab he can give a nice kick and than kneee
Bro the tall guy is like 90% legs lmao
haha yes we CAN tell
Decent vid this bro but you definitely can tell your smaller though 😂
Man dude your really small! But that just means that this stuff should work very well for me. I train muay thai. Been doing so for a long time. Ive been having trouble getting inside on one of my training partners whose a couple inches taller than me(Im 6'0) but significantly heavier(has about 60-70lbs on me). He has good teeps and uses his jab well and it can get annoying. Thanks!
chucknorris202 hey buddy, we actually did a few videos on dealing with a taller opponents kicks too but they'll be released at a later date! I spent 17 years sparring/fighting taller guys so had to get used to it lol! 😂
