Thank you for sharing this video tutorial. I was having trouble figuring out how to get started with exploration in E:D and this video (the linked video explaining the parallax method by Talshiarr) sorted me out. Well done.
Really valuable information to us beginners i was roaming around endlessly. I decided to restart and because of you vids i made 12.500 on my first time out brilliant keep up the informative work
Not sure if someone already said that because I only checked half the comments but there's two more options to find far away stuff with a basic scanner. 1: Stay near the star and check if there's any other ships (NPC or PC). They will often travel to distant stars/planets, follow them. 2: Space stations are always pre-discovered upon system entry. If they don't orbit around the star (never have seen it but I'm hardly a veteran) they must have a planet to orbit around. Also, basic scan range is 400Ls (with cheap upgrade to 500). Asteroid fields are basically worthless compared to stars & planets. Different type of bodies reaps different rewards (earth like planet is one of the best value but it's hard to find). I don't know if you got lucky with your findings or if it was rebalanced since your video but it doesn't pay as much now... And you have to sell it to a station at least 20Ly away. I usually pick a remote star, discover on the way there and find a station to sell my first discoveries on the chain.
It was rebalanced a bit at launch, prices came down and yes they added the 20Ly thing. I will maybe get around to doing an updated version at some point if I start exploring in my "Let's Play" series.
I never tried but I've seen comments about people using a controller with some amount of success. No idea about usability compared to a joystick or a mouse system.
Yakito88 It's probably because it's a British game made by a well-known British developer. My viewers are around 50-50 split between British and US, normally a UA-cam game would see a much higher percentage of US views. ;)
I did not know, but I guess that's a factor. Thankfully though, you are speaking clearly and slowly, which is great. Unlike the support from Student Finance England :D
That is one outstandingly thick accent. I love the sound of a Scottish accent, especially one so rich. I swear I'm going to move to Scotland for 3 years just so I can sponge up the accent and carry it with me. That and I'm damn near half Scot thanks to being of the Dunbar clan!
Just a little tip, i hope it helps... but while scing around, put the throttle roughly in the middle of the blue section, you will very rarely over shoot your destination.
Really good video, very inspiring. Couple of points for improvement: Assign the Discovery Scanner to secondary fire on the main weapon group on small ships. You may as well, it'll save you having to switch groups and possibly lock your own weapons out. You just fire the D Scanner with RClick without the need to deploy hard points. Select astronomic bodies via the left hand panel, you can readily see which stations, moons, and planets have not had all their details revealed from this list. It's far easier than trying to target them in space. Not that you shouldn't use Target Ahead ever, it's just often easier. Perusing the other videos now, they're really useful even post the game launch.
Great video, I was having trouble finding second stars so that should help. A wee tip about over-shooting, if you drop your thrust to the blue "sweet spot" then pitch up or down till your speed starts to drop you can re-align to your target without too much deviation. Oh yea, I'm crap at docking too! Keep up the good work and fly safe, brother.
Thanks so much for posting this video. I had no idea what I was doing wrong and now I'm making real credits (so to speak), since watching the video I have gained about 300k and have my name tagged as the first to discover several planets and a few suns... Thanks again man...this video was a big help
N is the default next group key. Also, in your setup, you could have just kept it on the first group with your pulse lasers, but put it as button 2 (click space bar twice), that way you don't have to worry about switching groups
Very useful for starting out and building up the cash to get to the next step. So much the same and yet so much more than when I played elite 20 odd years ago.
To not overshoot stuff so bad, when you hit the first slow down point I usually go to like 60% throttle and keep it lined up, it will automatically slow and I rarely overshoot unless I put the trottle back up too far. But I having played this since Alpha when fuel scoops werent in game yet so I'm gonna give it another shot. Mining will be new to me as well, but I've heard a lot of good things about exploring especially early on.
Jesse Lacey 75% is the key..literally. There is a keybind to "set speed to 75%" and that'll get you the perfect approach if you press it with 7 seconds to go to the target. I think I mention it in my first "Let's Play" episode. ;) Exploring is pretty good for a while yeah, I did some of that in later episodes.
I actually got an X55 that I use a ton in DCS World, so I use that with this, it's a manual throttle, so I usually just keep it in the blue once I get below 100 Ls or so.
Brilliant video bro very helpful for knewbie such as myself thanks bro , Also must commend a fellow Commander/Pilot for your skills on mouse and keyboard ! I have dual flight sticks and throttle and still i sometimes screw up like docking but it sure makes it easier to dog fight with.. Thanks bro
I like how you keep it simple and explain even the basics like setting up keys etc. Also you have same hardware as me(I have 7870 oc) So its good to see it will play well on my PC on the 16th. Also I am Scottish too although have lived in England for 30 years so your accent stunned me at first too lol But I like it! You sound like that comedian, you know the young Glaswegian forget his name.
Conrad Sharp Yes, I'm from Ayrshire and it's often said to be like a Glasgow accent (Bridges was born in Clydebank) with it's own particular words etc. You won't hear it that often on UA-cam because the true Ayshire tongue is very heavy on Scots words as well - so hardly anyone can understand us! I've been forced in to speaking "proper" English since meeting my Swedish girlfriend a few years ago, but there's no way the accent will ever change. She really had no idea what I was saying at first lol.
Dude you are awesome. Had you had an accent most of the world could understand. You would easily have between 1-2 million subs lol. Being Northern Irish I can understand you quite well. :P
Tinfoil Chef I guess it just different folks then. A lot of people aren't great with understanding him. I find his voice relaxing. I often doze off listening to him lol. But I mean that in a good way. :P
so in short : 1. -choose ANY system you see in the galaxy map 2. -travel to it 3. -use D-Scanner 4. target and fly to unexplored planets /stars in that system 5. -automatic scan starts 6 -finish and profit ? thats it ? right ?
Pretty much though some times you won't find the planets with the d-scanner, so you might have to use the parallax trick to find some first. After a while you'll have enough money to upgrade to better scanners - the advanced discovery scanner in particular is extremely good, automatically discovering every object in a system. You still need to scan the planets individually though and you should buy a Detailed Surface Scanner to get more money from doing that when you get enough.
AdoredTV thank you for your time and quick answer . So planets can be scanned more detailed with a Detailed Surface Scanner ? I never knew that Thank you for that tip. in your video at what part do you explain the the parallax trick ?
Excellent AdoredTV. Just began playing ED myself and was wondering how to earn easy credits with a beginners ship. Also...Just curious, at 37:35 - did you somehow keybind all the steps into one for requesting ship docking or was that just fastforwarding... or are you that fast on the keyboard... lol?
Lol I'm just that fast at requesting docking now. It's basically the same keybinds every time and you just eventually get used to it. You should also be able to macro it if you have a keyboard capable of doing that of course. You would need to set it up to return to the beginning though, so it's probably not easy to do. Some people use VoiceAttack software as well but that's the same, requires a bit of setting up.
AdoredTV Wow... exceptionally fast, who needs macros when you got that speed. I'm supposing you're not going to get some kind of HOTAS? Anyways, thnx ATV, I went to the VoicAttack website and I'll probably go with that. Just need to get a headphone/mic set up.
R.J. Moser They have a free trial so give that a go and see what you think. It's pretty cool and I'd probably use it if I weren't doing videos. I might eventually get a joystick but right now I feel I'm doing ok with the mouse. Waiting on Oculus Rift CV1 before I really splash out on hardware again. ;)
No.. No... I think you may be wrong friend. The more I think about it, I think it might be a Boston accent. I just watched Good Will Hunting and.. yeah.. I think that's a boston accent fo sho.
Joe Shopper I live in the UK you pleb, i'm not having a yank tell me i don't know an accent from my own damn country! half my bloody family is Scottish.
i was trying to travel from Kremain to Eranin, about 9 jumps fastest route selected in my Adder. however about 6 jumps in i ran out of fuel and i couldnt find a docking station so i had to self destruct. will using scanners allow me to find docking stations in areas i previously have never been before?
I'm not 100% sure but I believe you can always see docking stations on the system map - even if you haven't scanned the planet it is around. So basically if you can't see a station on the map it means there are none there? I'm not 100% sure but I thought it was that way during the beta.
Yes you can fly around the system to any point in it, turn around etc. Due to the distances involved you won't get anywhere fast unless you supercruise to it though.
Watching it in 2019. Was there a hyperinflation wave? I've just started a game with 10k CR. And for simple scanning, I was awarded with some 200k CR. (consider maybe cutting out all the irrelevant scenes: un- and docking, fighting) (Greeting from Glasgow)
You can try the parallax trick shown in this video - ua-cam.com/video/tH0hYT2ryNw/v-deo.html Not all systems have planets of course, though you can tell if they do by using the System Map trick he uses in the video to see if there are planets there or not.
AdoredTV Cheers mucker. Just got the game on xbox for sofa playing. Might have to get the pc version eventually as the new horizons one looks incredible. I do hope xbox players will also get the chance to go down onto planets and moons as well though. Looks like a lot of fun. :)
AdoredTV It was Alrai Sector JH-V B2-4. I have another question. If a star or whatever gets discovered by you, then can I still discover it on my game, or is it no longer discoverable? I found the motherload of undiscovered stuff in one system last night, then died and lost all my data. I want to say it was the Frighah System, but now it's all discovered. By the way, I died by trying to enable supercruise when I was right on a star, and the destination was on the other side of it. It told me to "escape through the hole" or something that looked like a warp tunnel, and I burned up and died. So sad because I just started in solo mode after being interdicted twice, and one time was killed...the other time I turned off my computer, because I'm in debt and can't make any money with these pirates. (Another issue I need to know about) :(
Greg Dale I'm not exactly sure how the discovery mechanism works now but you should be able to go back and rediscover it again - at least I was able to last time I died and went back. When you get too near to a star, just let your temperature drop as far as you can before firing up supercruise again, then use the navigation compass (blue dot) to find the escape vector. You will take damage but not a lot unless you can't find the escape vector. If you still haven't found it by the time you are at 150% heat and taking damage, switch off supercruise and start over once your temps get low again. Pirates shouldn't be too much of a problem, just boost immediately, put 4 pips into shields and jump away asap. You can "spin" while fleeing, using Yaw and Pitch and sideways thrust and that should make you harder to hit.
jumped to nearest system or whatever.... can't come back, where you see fuel tank capacity ? what do you do if everything around you is explored already ? I just want to explore stuff. Seems like you can't do Sh1t in this game since everything is already done by other people. You just have to self destruct every time you travel somewhere ? :DDD and how you define distance in here.... what is nearby lol? how can you say stuff is near by in astronomical units. Mm, Ls, Ly......
Gediminas Peleckis The Fuel tank is on the right side of your cockpit. There should always be plenty of unexplored stuff around - the game counts what you have explored so you don't lose out. What you need is a fuel scoop so you can scoop fuel, that way you can travel as far as you like. ;)
gonna sub you sire : ) i am kinda new at this too i like to do exsploring to when i get set up woot : )atm just working on geting my key bindes worked up : ) cheers : ) ill let u know how iam doing when i finaly get outl lol
paperplastic69 Cool cheers - I have a couple of videos on keybinds as well and I'm currently out exploring in a series of vids, so look out for them too. ;)
Thank you for sharing this video tutorial. I was having trouble figuring out how to get started with exploration in E:D and this video (the linked video explaining the parallax method by Talshiarr) sorted me out. Well done.

started watching this and thought good job i live in south shore blackpool
so pleased i found ya! best ED n00b videos on the net, so much help! learning curve on this game is insane but well worth it
Not sure if someone already said that because I only checked half the comments but there's two more options to find far away stuff with a basic scanner.

Evil Snake Yes it works with a lot of controllers. I used to play with a PS2 DualShock but couldn't get used to it.
Great tutorial! I was wondering, however, if you could do a video in which you exclaim, "IF IT'S NOT SCOTTISH, IT'S CRAP!" Thanks! LOL
I'll have to think about that one lol!
This is funny. About 80% of the E:D youtube videos I've seen were voiced by Scottish or Irish people. Funny coincidence.
Yakito88 It's probably because it's a British game made by a well-known British developer. My viewers are around 50-50 split between British and US, normally a UA-cam game would see a much higher percentage of US views. ;)
I did not know, but I guess that's a factor.

Very informative! Now I finally understand how to scan and get the planet data also. Thanks for posting Commander!
Really good video, very inspiring.

Yep you're right.
AdoredTV aaand I just noted that someone else has already made those comments… embarrassing.
Oh well, happy new year! Thanks for the videos!
Alexis Boom Hehe no worries, nobody noticed! Happy New Year to you also.
This is now my go to 'how to scan' video. Thanks loads. for this.
Yep I cover that in my first "let's play" video cheers. The secret is the "set speed to 75% keybind".
drop your speed to zero - then use thrusters for docking... much more control and easier
Thanks so much for posting this video. I had no idea what I was doing wrong and now I'm making real credits (so to speak), since watching the video I have gained about 300k and have my name tagged as the first to discover several planets and a few suns...
Thanks again man...this video was a big help
This is excellent and with a decent accent too. really helpful to me. I look forward to more and have subscribed...
Cheers!
it took me a while to learn that the basic discovery scanner doesn't just discover objects that are right in front of you
N is the default next group key. Also, in your setup, you could have just kept it on the first group with your pulse lasers, but put it as button 2 (click space bar twice), that way you don't have to worry about switching groups
Yep, that was pointed out to me a while ago so I mentioned it in a future video, cheers!
Yea I didn't realize that someone else had already suggested that until after I posted. Really enjoy the videos man, keep up the great work
Very useful for starting out and building up the cash to get to the next step. So much the same and yet so much more than when I played elite 20 odd years ago.
Good to hear another Scotsman on UA-cam. lol Good tutorial mate - Cheers
A bit late to the party here but thanks for a great guide to basic scanning, Mr A. Top man. 👍🏻
Very useful video (It's Vid-ay-yo!) -again nice to hear the Scot's accent. Have subbed :-)
omg ADORED!!! I recognized that voice right away :D was just looking for a ED scanning video lol

Thank god I love you!!! I have been trying for hrs to scan and not getting anywhere ty!!.
You only need to scan the nav beacon now to find out what’s in the system. Cuts out the grind of scanning each object individually.
Excellent tutorial, and I love the accent :-)
Now to take that knowledge into space for my first exploration run :D
Thanks for this video mate, exactly what I wanted.
I was actually hoping there would be a tutorial for starting out with stellar cartography as a possible game profession.
The accent is strong with this one. Love it though
Brilliant Videos mate thanks very much, you have made the game much easier for me, all the better when its fae a fellow Scot.
Really useful thanks from Glasgow :)
Thank you for a very helpful tutorial
Could be a Cool Combo of being a Bounty hunting Explorer :D (all you need is some skill a fuel scoop and slowly get bigger better things :D
Thanks for the vid now I can do it awesome!!
Thanks bro
Cape Gaming I mostly use the HOTAS X these days for fun but it's a lot easier to aim with the mouse for me still.
Very useful tutorial!
I like how you keep it simple and explain even the basics like setting up keys etc. Also you have same hardware as me(I have 7870 oc) So its good to see it will play well on my PC on the 16th. Great video, it would be great if you could make an English version!
Man that is one thick accent. I love it! lol
it helped me out a lot m8 :) thanks
AdoredTV Did you say that you are using the fire button (No.1) to scan? Loved the video BTW!
Dude you are awesome. Had you had an accent most of the world could understand. You would easily have between 1-2 million subs lol. Being Northern Irish I can understand you quite well. :P
I'm from New England and lived in Arkansas the last 20 years and I found his accent is quite easy to understand
Tinfoil Chef I guess it just different folks then. A lot of people aren't great with understanding him. I find his voice relaxing. I often doze off listening to him lol. But I mean that in a good way. :P
wanting to try out exploring alongside my type 6 trade ship, I think a hybrid is about to be put in order.
Love the Accent :)
actually veryhelpful, ty!!!
so in short :
1. -choose ANY system you see in the galaxy map
2. -travel to it
3. -use D-Scanner
4. target and fly to unexplored planets /stars in that system
5. -automatic scan starts
6 -finish and profit ?
thats it ? right ?

thanks a ton. very helpful.
What would you say is the best ship for discovery?
+Paradise Decay Haulers are good cheap starter explorer ship when upgraded with better drives.
ok, cheers for the help.
Excellent !!! thank you for share.

Scottish accent rocks.
good tutorial for a noob like me. thanks
CAN U EDIT OUT THE PRIATE FIGHT AND GET TO THE GOOD STUFF
I want to run into a bagpipe playing Scot in space and trade all my goods for a cargo bay full of haggis!
That's an interesting accent. Are you from Brooklyn?
+Joe Shopper are you mental? He's scottish! xD
No.. No... I think you may be wrong friend. The more I think about it, I think it might be a Boston accent. I just watched Good Will Hunting and.. yeah.. I think that's a boston accent fo sho.
+Joe Shopper You best be joking.
Joe Shopper I live in the UK you pleb, i'm not having a yank tell me i don't know an accent from my own damn country! half my bloody family is Scottish.
+Awesome Face - You live in the UK? When are you guys going to get a sense of humor? I was obviously joking, but way to get angry! +5 internets!
i was trying to travel from Kremain to Eranin, about 9 jumps fastest route selected in my Adder. however about 6 jumps in i ran out of fuel and i couldnt find a docking station so i had to self destruct. will using scanners allow me to find docking stations in areas i previously have never been before?

Can you stop Supercruse Anytime you want and anywhere Or do you have to sort of "get a target" and then you can just stop close to it?
Yes you can fly around the system to any point in it, turn around etc. Due to the distances involved you won't get anywhere fast unless you supercruise to it though.
Watching it in 2019. Was there a hyperinflation wave? I've just started a game with 10k CR. And for simple scanning, I was awarded with some 200k CR.
(consider maybe cutting out all the irrelevant scenes: un- and docking, fighting) (Greeting from Glasgow)
Yes it's much easier now to make credits early on.
What if you go to a system and when you do the search thing, no planets pop up?
You can try the parallax trick shown in this video - ua-cam.com/video/tH0hYT2ryNw/v-deo.html
Not all systems have planets of course, though you can tell if they do by using the System Map trick he uses in the video to see if there are planets there or not.
Are you able to sell the data at any station? Or to specific ones?
+Mikee Remastered Needs to be 20 LY away from the scanned system I believe.
AdoredTV Cheers mucker. Just got the game on xbox for sofa playing. Might have to get the pc version eventually as the new horizons one looks incredible. I do hope xbox players will also get the chance to go down onto planets and moons as well though. Looks like a lot of fun. :)
yo bro, y'all from Hollywood ?
Good question. Maybe we need to scan the planet surface? Anyone?
you will need a detailed descovery scanner
amazing accent xD
+Juma Amazing profile pic! Ermagerrhhd Mesheeerrgguuuhh
I went to a star system with 4 stars, and only one would show up in the screen.
That's pretty strange, do you remember the name of the system?
AdoredTV It was Alrai Sector JH-V B2-4. I have another question. If a star or whatever gets discovered by you, then can I still discover it on my game, or is it no longer discoverable?
