    Equal opportunity doesn’t mean equal outcome

    • @moralhazard8652
      @moralhazard8652 5 років тому +45

      Well yes, but what does that have to do with the situation they are talking about in this video? If you are a woman or a small man or have a hereditary desease you do not have the same opportunity when it comes to physical ability. And if you are born stupid or have parents that do not give a shit about education you certainly do not have an equal opportunity to get a phd in quantumphysics.

    • @MegaNiQ
      @MegaNiQ 5 років тому +73

      Seal of Approval Ben Carson would beg to differ, and that was before internet, internet now is basically free college for those who have access and desire to learn. With a few clicks you can go from nip slips images to quantum fluctuations. Access to information is in the pocket of everyone who has a smart phone now.

    • @moralhazard8652
      @moralhazard8652 5 років тому +38

      @@MegaNiQ You clearly haven't understood (or deliberately misinterpreted) what I wrote. Yes, a woman who trains all day for 20 years might end up stronger than some lazy big dude who spent the same time on the couch eating chicken wings. Yes, a poor black boy with a single mother if he is either more intellegent gentetically or somehow tried way harder than anyone around him might end up a brain surgeon. Noone disputes that. But that's not equal opportunity. The whole point is that they have to try harder or if they tried just as hard as their competition from a rich or educated family or with a better suited physique they would achieve significantly worse outcomes. And in many less prominent cases even trying harder doesn't get you there.
      Now even if you could find all the information a brain surgeon needs online for free, you would still have to somehow get into medical school and pay your bills until you got your degree without which noone is going to let you work on their brain.
      "Equal opportunity doesn’t mean equal outcome" as it is usually used is an idea that I can get behind. If two guys start from the same place and one tries harder or has better ideas or makes better decisions then it is fair if he ends up with a greater reward. If one starts off significantly worse than society should try to support him at the start.

      @@hauntyoo I feel as though you're asking me to prove why the earth isn't flat or why I believe it rained during the night because my lawn is wet. Obviously, policies forcing equal outcome have been in place for decades. I guess you missed that thing called affirmative action. Apparently qualified Asians seem to be having difficulty getting accepted into Harvard because of preference to lesser qualified applicants in the interest of satisfying more equitable racial diversity. Fortunately, there's now a plethora of established curricula in the pseudosciences geared to retain and graduate these budding scholars and future SJW activists despite their 4th grade reading abilities.
      How about prison reform and breaking the cradle to prison pipeline? Because all the races must be equal, and there's a disproportionate number of one race going to prison, it can only mean that race is being unfairly targeted and oppressed. Right? Therefore, make fewer arrests, even if it's just a petty crime of $5,000 or less. That will ensure an equal race distribution in the prisons, and that these fine contributors to society stay on the streets to nurture their families and become good, upstanding citizens. Problem solved. But we still need to make more arrests of the other race to make it more balanced. Check.
      But you want a name. Bernie Sanders. No fact check is needed to show the man's public service record and speeches clearly outline his socialist agenda...economic equality for all, even if the hardest workers have to take up slack for the slackers. All will be equal.
      Oh and I'm sure you've witnessed the trend in Hollywood to ensure all races and genders are equally represented in films, regardless of whether the acting roles might be better suited for a different race or gender.

      I remember seeing one of my peers get a trophy (in sports) and I decide that I want one too. I worked my tail off, practiced and got better and won more than one. The idea that you might have to work for something has become alien. The idea that even "IF" you work hard you might not be successful has become alien to some. Now if someone (who's younger) simply shows up they expect to be rewarded. I will also say this....I've learned more when I've failed than when I've been successful. Failure/defeat will cause some to give up and quit, while with others it will act as fuel. Either way, working and getting better at something still makes the individual better. It's like one of my favorite sayings: "adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it" Yeah, it's cliche' but it's also true.

      I can agree with the ideal of equal opportunity. But to believe there is no bias whatsoever in the outcome is to have significant blind spots. As with any society in the history of humanity, the group in power will always be biased in favor of its own perceived group, to the exclusion of others. It's more extreme in some societies than others, but it exists pretty much everywhere on earth. Just because we call something "equal opportunity" doesn't mean it necessarily is.

      We would hope that everyone is given an opportunity to succeed but that's not how the Real World Works! Many people have to be "determined that whatever they want to accomplish, nothing is going to stand in their way!" We all need to realize that we are the product of the decisions that we make and/or have made many years ago! My sons had a friend who got really high scores on his SAT & got a full scholarship for college! He flunked out his Freshman year & lost that scholarship! Why! Because he played on his gaming system & skipped many classes & then when he attempted to pull his a@@ out of the wringer for finals, it was too late! He didn't give up but realized that college wasn't for him & he sells insurance now!

    Today people are just thinking "equality" when they should really think "equality of chances" and it's not the same thing. I think everyone should have the chance, the opportunity to try to do anything they want but if they are facing the truth that they are not good at it (for any reasons, and physicality is one of them), then telling them (men or women) that they are not good should not be taken as being against "them". Hell, sometimes it's even like saving their lives!

    • @janetcampbell9286
      @janetcampbell9286 3 роки тому +2

      But the reality in the "real world" is that not everyone will have the same opportunities! We experience the results of the families that we are born into. If they are poor then we are more challenged, but on the flip side of wealth, there are wealthy people who waste & squander that wealth & end up far worse! There are people who were born into poverty whose mother determined that they would read, get good grades & graduate high school. Ben Carson's mother is an example of this. His mother was a black, single-parent house-hold mother but she insisted that Ben read, get a good education & stay off of the streets! Dr. Ben Carson was the first Black Pediatric Brain Surgeon in the U.S.A.!
      People need to stop seeing only the difficulties & make them the reasons why they can't overcome them & succeed! We need to stop seeing ourselves only as "victims" of our circumstances & realize that almost everyone who achieves any level of success, has to work very hard! Elbow grease was a common phrase when I was growing up! Hard work is now a shameful thing! That's a lie!

      @Josh D What you actually hate is corporatism, not capitalism. The system is rigged for elitist politicians and the company's they're influenced by. But you're also under the assumption that they're aren't any rich minorities and that all capitalist are dangerous. These are fallacies often spread to hate the rich (which is hilarious because it's also the same people who promote a system that gives them more power; socialism/communism).
      One is only a slave to the system if they allow themselves to be. They OPTED in to get a degree (that often costs more than they can afford), OPTED in to get credit cards. OPTED in to buy a new phone you can't afford and remain with a perfectly good one. OPTED in to receive government assistance. OPTED to get that house loan and so on. Believe it or not, there are two people to blame for this game. Those who created it and those who decide to play it. I'm 28 and only have 2,000 in debt. I am richer than most people in the US just based on my amount of debt. I decided NOT to opted in to the lifestyle that is encouraged by the very entities that created the game. The problem is, we live in an instant gratification lifestyle and where long term commitment (trade jobs/savings account) are hardly encouraged.
      If any switch in currency is going to made, it is going to be backed by gold. The gold standard. Data is not reliable. Once the system crashes, that data is not available and/or can't be used. The reward may be high but so is the risk. Gold you can touch and can be measured. The same cannot be said with what I assume you mean crypt-o currency.

    My mom was excellent at this, so thank God for her, and I mean that literally. My mom put me in EVERYTHING as a child, and I mean EVERYTHING. And a lot of it I HATED. And it annoyed the shit out of me, especially when it came to sports. She put me in softball, soccer, and karate, and I failed miserably. I didn’t understand why she did this at the time, it was just such a pain since I’m the least athletic person in the world. So next she tried music, and BAM. It clicked. I took singing lessons, thrived in it, and adored it. Now I sing in my church’s worship band and in a barbershop quartet and love it. After I grew up, I also discovered dancing, which I’m decent at but not as good as singing, but I still love it. Singing or dancing is not my vocation and I don’t get paid for it, but like Phil said, you’re lucky if that’s the case. I don’t hate my job, but it doesn’t excite me. But that’s okay. Because I know that after work, I can go out dancing or go to singing practice, and it makes it all worth it.
