We Ride The 2024 Kawasaki ZX-6R - Is It A Stud Or A Dud?

  • The 600 supersport class isn't dead just yet! Kawasaki has updated the Ninja ZX-6R for 2024 to keep it fresh (and somewhat relevant). Granted, the changes amount to some minor tweaks like a new look, round brake discs (instead of the petal shape), and some engine tweaks to make it burn cleaner, but with a class that's hanging on by a thread, maybe we should just be happy the 636cc Ninja is still around at all. It's still a fun bike to ride and Road Test Editor Troy Siahaan got to ride it at one of the best tracks in the Pacific Northwest - The Ridge - to see what it was all about.

Applause to Kawasaki to keep the supersport bike alive, despite the more and more stringent emission regulations.

Y’all shower praise for the underwhelming and overpriced zx4rr but critique the Zx6r that offers a much better value across the board. I have yet to see a zx4rr on the road but more and more new Zx6rs around when I ride. Say what you will but people vote with their wallets.

400 cc screamers have always been niche.
      Expensive for their engine size,
The new 400's are not close to the specialness of the 400's from the early 1990's.

I have seen a few zx4rr but when I do I just laugh a little you know? Like why? Just go to the zx6r already lol. Zx6r was my first bike. But once you go zx10r you won't ever care to go back to 600cc bikes.

comparing a novelty product like 4r and 6r is just dumb. Many owners of zx6r even zx10r have already purchased the zx4r just cuz it's a novelty product an engineer pinnacle for today's standards plus hey no one makes 400cc i4s ig. Zx6r is being criticised cuz it actually has competition with the 650-700cc class with almost the same power. Whenever I see someone call zx4r overpriced I just can't get it, why would someone compare it for practicality etc. People definitely vote with their wallet but I don't think Kawasaki is asking for it in 4r's case. Not all models are available which are cheaper like 4r or SE so yeap they aren't targeting much sales there plus it sells well enough to get you on a waiting list.

    • @ItzCashew

They can't even keep the zx4 in stock. I have one on order and it's a 4 month wait and that's on the early side.

I love this bike! I picked up one of the last 2023 models in black in May. I could have waited for the 2024 model, but I really like the older analog tachometer and LCD gauges. I have never taken it on the track and mostly use it for daily commuting in and around NYC. After a few months I decided to throw on some helibars to make it a bit more comfy and couldn't be happier with it.

    • @mavricxx
      @mavricxx 7 місяців тому

@@mavricxx The Helibars are fantastic, not only in quality craftsmanship, but also in the adjustability they provide. You can angle them up/down and in/out to get the right angle and level to your liking. Oh, and no drilling necessary. It is a pretty straightforward swap. Before installing them, I would start to get sore in my back after about 30 minutes. Now I can easily go several hours without any aches. i like mine, got it about 7 months ago, its number 101 made . I do have alot of gripes compared to my 09 r6 and 09 cbr 600rr.
    1. I'm 6ft tall with longer legs, when i put the ball of my feet on pegs and tuck my legs are above the groove on the tank, along with my neck hurting after 20min from tucking.
    2. The difference between modes is very minimal, i am however thankful for the rain mode, it helped.
    3. The quick shifter is not dialed in correctly, i was told you cant adjust it? but idk. i dont use it
    4. The Welds on the frame are ATROCIOUS like a 2 yr old welded it. Very ugly globbed up welds
    5. Windshield is basically non existent, been waiting 8 months for a new one, Zero gravity finally dropped 4 new ones
    6. The NEW TFT display is ok at first, but you quickly realize its more a distraction than anything, i would happily trade for an actual needle dial
    7. The APP that goes with this bike, ABSOLUTLEY USELESS on the zx6r, it was built for the zx-10. They should have just left it out on this bike. Its like going to Six Flags, and seeing all the cool rides you won't be able to get on.
    8. Bike with a slip-on just seems slow. Compared to my other bikes its very slow, being a 636cc i was expecting alot more than what it's tuned for oem.
i will report back after i do my thing to make it more better and faster for me

The ZX6R has had a slipper and assist clutch since 2005. An IMU, and auto blipper would make it more expensive, and sport bikes aren't selling nearly as well as they used to. I wonder what that new cbr600rr will cost, that has all this tech. Not saying I wouldn't like to see all this stuff, but there is a trade-off in cost.

"Reshaped camshafts enhance mid-range power of the engine"
Interpretation: peak power is down, emissions standards are hampering high RPM small displacement engines, and Euro5 compliance forced us.
I guarantee you put this 2024 against any 2006 ZX-6R (636) and fully un-cork, full race exhaust (track use only), and ECU flash and the 2006 engine is going to have noticeably more power.
I'm seeing a trend in the last decade where throttle bodies are getting smaller, catalytic converters are getting bigger and more numerous, cam profiles are getting more mild, and in general bikes are getting heavier. In order for manufacturers to keep the perception of value or "new" going, they keep festooning more and more electronics, controls, technology on bikes which may.... or may not change performance numbers in a good way.
Things aren't really that much better, in spite more silicon chips, wires, computers, fancy displays. But the good thing, the same motorcycles costs about DOUBLE what they used to. 🤪 I bought a new 2006 ZX-6R back in the day out the door for less than $8400, all taxes and fees included. And no, salary has NOT kept up with the cost of goods.
Who's going to "regulate" CARB and EPA? Who stops them from turning into monsters?

@@delusion2987 While 1L superbikes have gained about 30 horsepower in 20 years, it's been at the cost of mid-range thrust. There is scientific limits to how much power a given cylinder can create, short of forced-induction. The trend is more horsepower! which means you simply take the horsepower formula and add more RPM to it. In order to do that, you have to shorten the stroke (reduce piston acceleration). You have to make throttle bodies bigger to flow more air at 15,000 RPM. To do that, you reduce intake velocities at mid-rpm which reduces mid-range torque. And so on and so on.
All in all, the current superbikes cost double, don't actually make power (until you spend another 4 grand uncorking them, throwing away a grand worth of expensive compliance parts), and don't feel as exciting, raw, risky, nor do they sound it (try Hoover vacuum).
I know about inflation. I know about it every time I buy food or pump gas or buy socks.
I also know how inflation works. It's the Federal Reserve printing money, Congress spending it, and the people having their services more and more compromised for less and less compensation, not to mention their children's childrens' children footing the bill. While currency no longer has anything backing it when gold was removed in the early 70's, oil production isn't backing it either as much of that has been shut down. Currency is growing worthless. Look at a dozen historical charts. In the last 3 years Congress has doubled the debt which took the last 215 years to create.

I love the fact that Kawasaki is still making a 600ish supersport. The reast are dead in the water. One thing that i will never understand is riding modes for a 600. How useless is that function!? My GSXR600 has 2 modes and i think it is absolutely useless. 600's dont need modes: if its raining dont rev it out, if you want to go fast rev it out. Really doesnt make much sense to me.

    • @langhamp8912
      @langhamp8912 7 місяців тому +2

Bikes intended for racing have always had two modes to be used in conjunction with TC (traction control), with one devoted to rain mode, since about 2003, and those systems eventually trickled down to production race bikes. The rain mode doesn't remove horsepower but rather limits the rate of acceleration of the engine, and so the traction control system doesn't have to be used so heavily or suddenly. While 120-130 hp doesn't sound like a lot compared to modern super bikes, on a dry track 600cc bikes do light up their TC, and in the rain they're just a handful.
However, I cannot see riding modes being used without TC; you wouldn't be able to effectively use rain mode without TC. The only thing you'd have is a longer throttle throw.
TC-equipped bikes tower over their non-TC brethren in race conditions, by the way, and curiously British supersports bans TC from competition even in the rain.

The Zx-6R is the only 600 I would consider over a R7 for the road because of the extra torque over the other 600. Watching this space...
