Thanks. Great video but it’s cut off does not explain what to do with the extra chain
Wow sorry I never noticed that! You just cut it off with a pair of wire cutters. Leave six beads or so on the other side just in case for adjustment, but that should do it.
Thank you. I did everything the way you say but it’s there anyway to have it so i get a full flush without holding it down. The previous flap was hard plastic and toot a while to close back. This closes right away
@@mariopalumbo9898 you have to lower the float. Watch the whole video he talks about it.
Great detailed how-to on replacing a Kohler flapper. I actually took the old one out and laid it next to the new one and counted the beads on the chain from the flapper to the float, adjusted the float accordingly, then counted the beads (again) from the top of the float to the connection. Reattached the little metal 'bead holder' to the bead then attached the clip to the handle rod. Seems to work OK - having the old one to use as a guide for length and float placement took some guesswork out of the effort. Thanks for all your efforts - this was very helpful.
Best video for Kohler Flapper and Floats! Very well done, easy to follow. Thank you!
I'd recommend removing the old flapper and float and adjusting the replacement unit BEFORE you install it inside the tank. Match the position of the float and the overall chain length while both are outside of the tank. It's easier to adjust and you don't risk dropping the float retainer disks or the top-of-chain clip down into the tank drain port.
After the old and new flapper-float-chain are matched, install the new one and make sure it flushes okay. It should, since it was matched to the old setup. DO NOT cut the chain until it flushes okay and you know it is set correctly. As you said, don't risk making the chain too short. I like your idea of keeping extra chain beads for later adjustments!
Taking the old flapper out isn't fun. With either the hard plastic flapper arms with slots, or an old hardened-rubber flapper with holes, you run the risk of snapping the tangs off the flush valve's pipe. But the flexible rubber on the new flapper should let you install and remove it easily, for adjustments. Don't think you really need to install the new flapper and chain and then do all adjustments inside the tank.
I should have been clearer - the "float" is the small one on the flapper chain, not the big float that controls the water shutoff.
My original flash had a float, then for 10 years I had none, now I have not example to know where to position the float :) Lower you set it seems more water you flush through without holding the handle, is that right ?
Watched this several times...and followed your instructions, they were "on point." I changed the flapper and it works!! Thank You. Great vlog 👍🏽
So glad to hear this worked out for you. Hope we can help again.
Great video!
Thanks to you, I understand how to change the flapper on my mom's Kohler Portrait toilet (K3590).
I had to do adjustments several times, but I finally got it right!
My mom's toilet was running and didn't even realize it until the $1,000+ water bill.
You are saving folks lots of money!
Great video. We had so much difficulty knowing how to change the blue flapper and watching this video helped us so much. Thanks.
Excellent Kohler Flapper Install video from "That Fix It Guy"
Great video, thank you!
One additional tip for adjusting the float.
You only need the top clip to get the float adjusted. After you get the float where you want it, then put on the bottom clip.
Great tip. Thank you for watching and your comment!
73 yr young lady that just changed my first flapper. Thank you so much for showing me the steps!
Great video. I had it all installed before I watched this but I could not figure out how to extend the flush time. The tip on the float being lower was exactly what I needed. Thank you!
Sweet! So glad this could help you out. Please share and help us grow. Thank you
I was pulling my hair out trying to do this! Your video helped tremendously! Thank you!!!
I am so happy that this helped! I really hope I can help again!
I was working on this same flapper today. Paid enough for the Leatherman. I should have watched this earlier and put it to use. Fumbled through that part without a pliers. Didn't want to break the black clips on the float and was unsure of the design. Experience is the best teacher. Thanks for this video!
You are very welcome! Thank you for watching and hope I can help again soon!
Thanks so much for this video! My husband wanted to call a plumber, but I knew it wasn’t needed. This video was a huge help! I am one proud woman for getting this done all for about $10!
Awesome! So happy this helped you! Hope we can help again.
@@ThatFixItGuy my wife wanted to call a plumber but I knew I could do it
Thank you. I was about to change my toilet but I managed to fix it with help from your video!
Perfect timing. I installed the Kohler float flapper you use in my Kohler portrait toilet and it just doesn’t flush right. I have to hold down the handle to get enough water to flush the toilet. I took off some beads but still didn’t help. I am going to try again. Thanks!
Thank you. I ordered my new flapper, and I am going to replace it myself. Your video was great. You covered all the questions I needed to know. Great video
So glad this could help! I hope we can help again.
Thanks! I couldn’t get that float adjusted with just the instructions. Your video helped!👍
Awesome, I’m glad that it helped. Thank you for watching and I hope we can help again.
Extremely helpful! Best video of others that I watched. Could not have replaced flapper without this easy to understand step-by-step, well filmed video.
Thank you for the kind words. We are glad the video helped! Hope we can help again.
@@ThatFixItGuy did you attempt to put a NEW GASKET on the old flapper?
Super helpful while I was installing that exact part in my toilet tonight! Thank you!
Awesome! So glad this could help you out.
This was the only video that applied to my particular flapper. Thank you!
I’m glad that this helped. I hope I can help again.
Thank you! Just needed to figure out how to shorten the chain on this style of flapper. You covered it beautifully at the 4:55 point. What a bad design. I think I'll like this flapper better than others, but shortening the chain should be easy. This is ridiculous. Thanks again!
thank you for this video! just had to change ours and I've never done it before. this was so helpful to follow along.
So glad this could help you out. I hope we can help again
Thank you for teaching us this--if you hadn't taught us about "snapping" the hard plastic piece off, I probably would have broken mine. ☺
Great Video - it explained the adjustment of the flapper in detail better than my call to Kohler....got...her....with your help!
So glad this helped you out Larry! Hope we can help again!
Very helpful! It would help if you mention any tools required prior to fixing something.
I don't know why I just love this
Awesome! So glad you like it!
Awesome video Brian. Thanks for keeping it short and simple.
For sure. Thank you for watching!
Man you saved the day I just installed a new flapper on my Kohler Iron Works 4401
That is great to hear! Hope we can help again sometime!
The tip about moving the plastic part on the bottom of the float is easier than fooling around with the top side
This was very helpful, thank you!
So glad this could help.
I have to laugh! I have the same flapper. I installed it today and it's not flushing fully. I have to lower the float like you did! Thank you for posting this!
Oh no! Did you get it hooked up?
Thanks for sharing this. helped me out big time..
Awesome! So happy to hear this! I hope we can help again.
Hey Brian thanks for the video I had never seen a flapper with a float on it
Only certain toilets use this type of flapper and won’t work good without them. Thanks for watching Britt!
The float gives you a partial flush option for #1 and a full flush, if you hold down handle, for #2. I believe it is designed to save water, which is what I use it for.
Great video. Thanks!
Thank you for watching. Hope this helps!
these older toilets are WAAAAYY better than these newer ones that have the canister flush valve.
I love the older toilets. I use to rebuild and sell or I have upgraded my own place with them.
Great info! Loved the details, really helped. Thanks for sharing!
I’m so glad the video helped! Hope we can help again!
@@ThatFixItGuy You rock! keep it going!
Great, thanks! Still trying to figure out how to release the chain from the bottom clip 😏🥺 so I can shorten it below the float 😕
Another awesome informative video!! Thanks for sharing!!
Your welcome! Hope you have a great weekend.
Thanks very much for doing this video. Just what I needed. Good to know the secret to removing a hard plastic flapper. And good to know that the float as well as the gasket on hard flappers can stop working. I think the float on my mom's toilet flapper doesn't work anymore. Good to know I can replace this flapper with a soft blue plastic one, and not have to put on as well as take off a hard plastic flapper.
Thanks for your sharing!
Your welcome. Hope you were able to get it fixed.
Great video Brian hope your doing good
Thanks Steve. We are doing good! Have been working like a mad man! Trying to slow down so I can get back to the channel!
Thank you so much for the video! I just followed your instruction and replaced my Wellworth 4512 flapper with the blue one (Kohler GP85160) in your video. The only issue is that the original problem remains: the water in the tank gradually leaks to the toilet bowl and water refills into the tank every 5 minutes. Can you please shed some light? Thanks! Henry
Your seal on the bottom of the flush valve aka the piece that the flapper sets on itself is leaking. I usually will rebuild the tank if I have to change that seal.
@@ThatFixItGuy thank you so much for your reply!
Happy to help any way I can. Please reach out again if you need something.
nice video I have never seen a float on a flapper. You should tell people they don't need to be grossed out working in a toilet tank I know lots of people think they are playing in poo water in the tank.
That is a great idea! Thank you. I will add that too my list.
We use them. Excellent.
I have mine adjusted to give a 1/3 to 1/2 flush for #1. If I want a full flush for # 2, I hold the handle for a little up to 10 seconds. I get to save a lot of water since the vast majority of flushes are for #1. I measured and ended up with 1/2 flush without holding handle, so far so good.
That is not a bad idea. You do save a good amount of water.
That is what float does, it regulates amount of water on the first short press without hold.
Great info and easy install. Thanks for sharing this. I need to do this as well.
Some older toilets won’t work good without this type of flapper. Thanks for watching!
@@ThatFixItGuy My sister has one with a 2 liter suspended container at her house .it’s being working fine for like 2 decades with no problem. That is the one of the best water efficient toilet systems I’ve seen.
@Marc Mondragone That is cool. I don’t know that I’ve seen anything like that. If you remember snap and pic and post it on my Facebook I would love to see it. Thank you for sharing!
Do yourself a favor, use the Korky Universal Float Style # 2004, got at Ace Hardware, kind in video with those beads were driving me insane, so threw it in the trash, & went got the Korky. I got toilet fixed in less time than it took to watch video.
That is great to know! I do love some korky products. The next time I run into one of these I will try that out. Thank you!
My toilet doesn't need a floater, but it has a bead chain, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to adjust it without breaking the hook. Now thanks to this video, I know I need needle nose pliers!
Glad we were able to help in some way.
It all makes sense and I was ready to make the change. However, my old flapper does not pop off the way yours did. The prongs don't have the opening on the bottom that yours did. Don't want to break anything so may have to call the plumber to replace this $10.00 part.
Could you send me a picture of that flapper? It is hard plastic and does not pop off like that? Weird
Very helpful!
To remove the black clips from the float, use needlenose pliers to pull it from the side.
Yep that will do it. Thank you for watching and your comments about the needle nose pliers. They are a great tool.
After my vast experience of doing this once I found it works best i’d the float is secured right next to the flapper.
😂 that is awesome. So glad you hooked this up.
They changed the flapper making it impossible to adjust. At least I can't find a way to adjust the chain. I had to wrap the chain around the flush stick.
Wish I could have this toilet
I brought a kohler flatter with float. I cannot open the clip on the top end of the chain. I cannot adjust its length. The kohler design is really stupid. I don't know how to get help. It's frustrating. I don't know what these guys thinking.
That model is the Rolls Royce of all Crappers . For what I know.
Lol! It is a nice toilet for sure. I put a used one in my house at one point and they are pretty fancy!
What is the purpose of the float? And what does bringing it lower do for the flush?
The float is to help your flapper stay up longer for a proper flush. Lowering the float just allows you to keep the flapper up just a little bit longer. If it stays up too long it will be a double flush or not long enough is a short flush.
I have a tank with what i think is a short tank. When I flush it opens the flapper just enough to let water out but flapper does not fully open. In order to flush i have to hold the handle. Do you think a flapper with a float might help it open all the way?
Hi. Thank you for the video.
Is there a gasket that may be placed on the part on which the flapper rests when it's down? The Kohler flapper (GP85160) in my Devonshire tank is only 18 months old. The flapper has been intermittently leaking for many months at this point. The rim of the white plastic pipe onto which the flapper rests when down is angled rather than straight. This angling seems to be contributing to the leaking. As a result, it seems a soft gasket attached to this rim might resolve the leak. Your advice/suggestions would be appreciated. : )
If you have replace your flapper and the rim of the flush valve where the flapper sits is smooth then the seal to the flush valve is likely your issue. It is that black runner that set at the bottom of the tank.
One more thing it could be the your flush valve is cracked.
You have to remove the tank to change the flush valve seal. If you are removing the tank I always tell people to rebuild the whole tank with all new parts. That way you know there will be no issue.
@@ThatFixItGuy Thank you for replying. Replacing the flapper didn't resolve the intermittent filling of the tank. The good news is that I found the answer on Fluidmaster's website. The cause of the tank losing water to the bowl was SIPHONING.
The refill tube was pushed too far into the flush valve's overflow pipe causing the tube to be well below the water level inside the tank. Hence the siphoning. I learned something new! The problem hasn't occurred since I adjusted the refill tube. Fingers crossed the fix sticks.
A happy new year to you!
From Fluidmaster's website:
"7. Siphoning
Siphoning occurs when the refill tube is pushed too far into the flush valves overflow pipe.
If the end of the tube is inserted into the overflow pipe and the end of the tube is lower than the water level inside the tank, water will siphon out of the tank and into the bowl.
This will cause the water level in the tank to drop and a Ghost Flush will occur.
Make sure the refill tube is connected to the top of the flush valves overflow pipe so that it is above the water line at all times."
That is great to know and will make an awesome video. Thank you for the information.
How much water should remain after flushing the toilet and adjusting the flapper and float? Thank you
I don’t ever go by how much is left in the tank. That varies so much from toilet to toilet I don’t pay attention. You should look at the water leaving the bowl. You want to make sure there’s enough water to take down solids, but not so much water that it double flushes. Does that make sense?
@@ThatFixItGuy Yes that makes perfect sense. By the way, the video was great. Thank you.
Thank you Kirk. I hope we can help again!
What's the name of the tool he's using to adjust the chain with?
That is a leatherman multitool. There is a link in the description box you can check out. Thank you for watching.
Been watching these videos and it's not helping my issue. First I have to say that the floater I have has clips, the floater can not be adjusted unless these clips are removed. I have lived here for 12 years and this issue started about a couple months ago, now unless maintenance snuck into my apt, no one has messed with it. I adjusted it myself, to the lowest it can go, and I still have the same issue.
I the high end Korky flush valve quieter than the Fluidmaster or the Kohler branded flush valve?
Korky flush valve are very quiet.
@@ThatFixItGuy Thanks. I just picked up the Korky 2X fill valve. The all black one. The fluidmaster I put in a couple of years ago has been real noisy since day 1. You can hear it filling in the next room. Real annoying.
Right on. Have you noticed a big noise reduction?
@@ThatFixItGuy Well, the fill valve started filling up like normal for some reason as it was a slow fill. So they decided to not replace it.
Please answer soon…any ideas about opening this part of the chain? 5:36 7/21/24.
I detest this kind of flapper, in all my years I had never had to use this crap till I bought my house last year. I never could get it fine tuned, so just put up with it. I had a plumber here last month for other work so I got him to fix it, now the other toilet needs a new flapper ( same crap ) so I'll try again, should have had him change it out while he was here.
Oh man sorry to hear that. They do suck that way for sure though! I am glad that newer toilets don’t use this kind of flapper anymore. I hope the video helped and you can get it to work.
these flappers are a pain in the ass trying to adjust these i have just spent an hour trying to get the level correct and still don"t have a full flush its short cycles- this type of float flapper is for the birds thanks for your input- but Kohler products are not for me- i am going to hardware store and get something else.
a regular korky would work just as good
The regular Korky with float or without?
I replaced the flapper but it is still leaking into the toilet bowl. Any suggestions?
If the flapper was replaced and it is still leaking more than likely it is the flush valve gasket. That is the piece that the flapper sits on. You will have to pull the toilet tank off to replace it. I say rebuild it all if your going to pull the tank off
Make sure there is nothing stuck where the flapper sits on the flush valve. It should be smooth. Then that is it or the over flow tube on the flush valve is crack. Either way if you are pulling the tank you will be replacing it.
@@ThatFixItGuy that’s not what I wanted to hear but I want to thank you so much for taking the time to write me back. I will take your advice. Thanks again!!
Best suggestion......Rip that garbage Kohler toilet out and get an American Standard Cadet
Glad I found this comment. That was my problem. I got the kohler flush valve kit for just over $20 and replaced it this morning. No more leaks.
Water pressure Koehler
You talking pressure assisted Kohler toilet?
got new flapper with float - pushed float all the way down - flapper still closes too soon - feh
Did you get it figured out? We’re you replacing like for like?
@@ThatFixItGuy yup - but before that - only thing that was different was i swapped out the supply line to a flex steel piece - the flapper mocks me!!
that's ordinary. Do something special like ... replace flapper with Kohler's Aquapiston toilet flushing system.
why not just put a new Gasket on the old flapper? lasco makes a gasket for the old plastic flapper so has anyone just put a new gasket on the old flapper?
;
And a ; to you sir!
Went to the store and remarkably the aftermarket replacement valve was made in the USA and the Kohler valve was made in China.
OMG THANK YOU!!!!! 8:00 was soo helpful! I gotta lower my float! ;D
