Trekking from Gourikund to Kedarnath (Part-1)

- From Gourikund we started our trekking to Kedaranath. Bobby and I went on horse and my mom (85 years) went by a palki carried by four people. The route was much better with availability of shops, toilets and other basic facilities. This trekking was much simpler than Gangotri-Gomukh trekking.
It was a 14 kms trekking route from Gourikund to Kedarnath. The views were brilliant at both the sides with mountains, clouds, snowpeaks and waterfalls. Sometimes we were stopping the horse and waiting for my mom to overtake. We went through Rambara and Garudchatti, the hamlets on the way. River mandakini was flowing by the side of the trekking route. The journey through the mountains was thrilling and adventurous.
Kedarnath was extremely cold at an altitude of 3585 meters above sea level. The ponies were well acquintained with the route and were carrying us by themselves without any guidance. We reached there at about 11 o'clock after four hours of trekking, while my mom took 2 hours more by palki and reached about 1 o'clock. The journey was smooth and fantastic without any hastle. Umakantji, could you please tell us how much was the cost of Palki and pony.
The cost of pony was Rs 600/- one way, and cost of palki was Rs 3000/- both way. As almost 10 years have passed, now the cost must have increased to 1000 rs for ponies one way and 6000-7000 rs for palkies both way. If you start in the morning both ponies and palkies can return on the same day by evening. Palkies take 200-300 rs more to halt in the night and come on the next day.
Sitting on ponies is very painful while coming down as the body of the pony shakes a lot on a downward route. It is better to walk the return journey if you can.

However, the price may vary depending on (i) seasonal demand (ii) bargaining skills and urgency, (iii) your body weight - Palkies charge more for heavy people) and other factors.

Hi Umakantji, this is srinivas from hyderabad. This May 2017, iam planning for char dham yatra. we are 6 and There are 2 children in my group. May i know the total trek from gaurikund to kedarnathji. We are planning to go by walk from gaurikund. Is the trek is good for walking . How long it takes if i go by walk or if i hire a pony, how long it takes. How abt the climate during day and night at kedarnathji. Thanks in advance.
what is the cost of a pony from gourikund to kedarnath
Pony is about 1000 rs from Gourikund to Kedarnath. The price may vary depending on seasonal demand, bargaining skills and urgency etc. Sitting on a pony while climbing down (return trip) is very painful as the body of the animal shakes a lot. You may prefer walking if you are capable.

You are right, sitting on the horse was very painful. So we also walked half the way. Horse helped us to move fast, as my mom was going by a Palki I was supposed to reach before the Palki would reach Kedarnath. Thank you for your beautiful comments. Jai Kedarnath ji ki.
