Trekking from Gourikund to Kedarnath (Part-2)

- From Gourikund we started our trekking to Kedaranath. Bobby and I went on horse and my mom (85 years) went by a palki carried by four people. The route was much better with availability of shops, toilets and other basic facilities. This trekking was much simpler than Gangotri-Gomukh trekking.
It was a 14 kms trekking route from Gourikund to Kedarnath. The views were brilliant at both the sides with mountains, clouds, snowpeaks and waterfalls. Sometimes we were stopping the horse and waiting for my mom to overtake. We went through Rambara and Garudchatti, the hamlets on the way. River mandakini was flowing by the side of the trekking route. The journey through the mountains was thrilling and adventurous.
Kedarnath was extremely cold at an altitude of 3585 meters above sea level. The ponies were well acquintained with the route and were carrying us by themselves without any guidance. We reached there at about 11 o'clock after four hours of trekking, while my mom took 2 hours more by palki and reached about 1 o'clock. The journey was smooth and fantastic without any hastle. Thank you madam for liking my video. may month me shardi rehega, yes, din me kam our raat ko jyaada. thodi barf bhi dikhai degi. sab dham 3000 mtr ke upar he our har manine me shardi hoti he.
Gourikund se kedarnath same day return ho sakta he, yes. horse pe hota he (3-4 hrs going, 2-3 hrs coming), palki pe bhi sameday hota he (5 hrs going, 4 hrs coming).
Aap chardham kelie jyada time rakhiye. chardham mandir ke siba our bhi bahut kuch he. Ho sakta he to pancha prayag, pacha badri, panch kedar etc. bhi dekhiye. Wish you a happy pilgrimage.

Hi Umakantji, this is srinivas from hyderabad. This May 2017, iam planning for char dham yatra. we are 6 and There are 2 children in my group. May i know the total trek from gaurikund to kedarnathji. We are planning to go by walk from gaurikund. Is the trek is good for walking . How long it takes if i go by walk or if i hire a pony, how long it takes. How abt the climate during day and night at kedarnathji. Thanks in advance.
The trekking route from Gourikund to Kedarnath has been changed after the recent disaster in 2013. By and large the route is good. Walking will take about 6 hours for occasional walkers like us. (climbing will be slow, return will be faster). Walking will be pleasant in the cool climate. Pony will take about 4 hours and about 1000-1200 rs. Palkies will take about 5 hours and 4000 rs.
Kedarnath is a terribly cold place being close to icy mountains. May will be pleasant with Sun shine, but nights will be extreme cold. If you are going by walk I would suggest to halt the night at Kedarnath. There are many hotels available there though the rents will be higher during May (peak season). Be prepared to pay about 1000 rs per night.
Sitting on ponies is very painful while coming down as the body of the pony shakes a lot on a downward route. It is more comfortable to walk the return journey if you can.

Did you have to pay another Rs.4000 for palki from Kedarnath to Gaurikund?
You can book palki for one way or both ways. But generally people book for both ways as people going by palki cannot return by any other means. Now you can book the palki to and fro on the same day (no night halt at kedarnath) or for two days (with a night halt at Kedarnath). Same day to and fro may be around 6000-7000. Going today and coming tomorrow may be 8000 or so. The palki people will stay at their own place in Kedarnath and bring you back on the next morning. However, the rates will vary depending on season, demand and bargainable too. Often they charge more for heavy weight passengers.
