I have had these for several weeks ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx8N-gevHZ6YWNoOYdRjL90vdbNyOKKHxL and I have been really happy with them so far. I love being able to do a variety of workouts at home when I don't have time to make it to the gym. When paired with a basic bench, there are tons of different exercises and you can hit pretty much all major muscle groups. It is easy to adjust to your desired weight with the dials on each side. They slide in and out of the cradle smoothly. The only downside to this design vs the newer version, is that these are pretty wide. This does limit your range of motion with certain hand positions on certain exercises. Straight dumbbell press would be an example of this. I have to turn my hands slightly in order to bring them close enough together. Not a huge deal to me though. Really happy with this purchase and would definitely recommend.

Went to Home Depot to get my pipe. 10ft 1 1/2 pipe $46. Went at night asked them to cut it. It then became $ 13.45 per ft since it was now cut pipe. Long story short the $46 pipe became $94.14 and the 1 1/2ft dumbbells became $40.34. Total $134.48 so I left and went to Lowe’s and they cut it for free but their machine was broken. $15 saw blade later I saved $73. Just letting you all know my Home Depot was cutting pipe for $8.85 per foot! I tried to use the neversate coupon, but they are not yet a sponsor.😂

Hi Brian, good vid. I made an axle bar from schedule 60 or 80 or whatever pipe, rubber hose, and hose clamps. "Works good."
In Incheon Korea in our neighborhood between the landfill and the titanium plant our gym was a clearing in the woods. Our bar was a real axle, and our plates were truck flywheels. My 88 year old Dad just gave me the 5 feet of 1" pipe with set-screw collars he put together for my brother & I in the 1960s. I'm still training at 62, what a gift.
Thank you for encouraging us. Practical means to achievable goals become treasures when shared. 안영히 계세요 (Anyeonghi kyeseyo - Peacefully Remain)

Helpful tip- as far as the diameter is concerned, you don’t need to buy the specific collars if you already have Olympic collars. Just wrap the “sleeves” with one or two layers of duct tape and the regular Olympic collars should work fine.

O.D. usually means outside diameter when referring to pipe or solid round stock. also the 1.5 inch diameter pipe refers to the inside diameter but taking into consideration the wall thickness of the pipe the outside diameter is slightly smaller than 2 inches which fits most olympic plates. just fyi

Great video! Gyms just closed 2nd time this year and this time me and a friend of mine decided not to let that get us down. So we bought 7ft long, little over 70lb heavy axle (full metal, not pipe) with 50mm diameter, some plates and 175lb sandbag. Next we're going to build squat stands and we're ready to get back at it 💪🏻
Thanks for looking after us poor(ish) people, stay strong brother!
Edit: we used 2-piece clamp on shaft collars instead of duct tape. Way more expensive than duct tape but more heavy duty

This is a great tip! For the dumbbell collars you can buy 1.5" steel shaft collars with a set screw for $10-20 a pair. you will need to unscrew the set screw a bit every time, but it is 30-40% the price of typical collars. For the barbell, so long as you're not tipping it, you could simply layer some duct tape together and attach velcro to it to make a reusable duct tape collar.

Pro tip, get yourself some 1-15/16 inch set screw collars and they make way better collars than duct tape. They go for about 20 bucks a pair from places like amazon and Zoro.
Take it one step further, go to the paint section and buy Rustoleum truck bed paint and you can "powder coat" your axle.
You can also buy "pipe caps" so you can cover the ends and really make it look nice
My 40 dollar axle has held up to 620lbs 13" deadlifts for reps and drops from overhead with 300+ with no bend at all.
Also, according to both rogue and titan, the sleeve is actually 15.5 inches of loadable space, but that's probably just nitpicking at this point.

*They have adjustable inch stop clamps for plumbing that should work for both the collars and clamps. They have a nut with an allen key slot in the nut so the stop can be tightened with socket, allen, or wrench.
Lowes has ones that have polymer washers and everything, they're $6 a piece though, and 4 is needed per bar, so that adds a lot to the cost, but will look cleaner, be sturdier.*

Did mine for$35. Home Depot has a veteran's discount and the pipe was cheap. I do suggest filing the ends of the bar after it is cut. That shit is sharp.
Another solution for the collars is to use a quick collar and thread a sock over the bar before you clasp it. It adds juuuust enough width so that the collar will grip it.

You can also make a "conventional" barbell by using a 3/4inch diameter x 5 ft length of the same black pipe (or galvanized if you prefer) and add a 3/4 x 1 1/2 reducer/connector on each end. Then just attach a 12inch long piece of 1 1/2 diameter pipe to each end and viola you have created a homemade simulation of a conventional barbell, minus the rotating sleeves. Not sure how much weight the 3/4 pipe will support but for all of us normal human beings it should be ok. If you're planning on going heavy and are concerned find a smaller diameter pipe (1/2 or 3/8) or rod that will fit inside to add extra support to the 3/4inch pipe.

Chrome repo has sch 40 pipe. You can get sch 80 pipe which is thicker wall and stronger for like $70. Also, if you have regular plastic clamps, cut a tie down strap to like 4 inches and put it between the axle and the clamp and it will be mostly snug

Titan sells a pair of loadable dumbbells for $75 shipped. Not the highest quality but opened up a ton of options in my home gym.

oooh nice, could do with an axle bar, now just have to figure out what the local equivalent is and where to get it, large popular hardware store that sells sausages on the weekend dosen't seem to have anything remotely like that

My dumbbell handles are old. They're either York or Cap. I bought them new about 20 years ago but kept putting off getting in shape until this past year.
