Dunno about that. Times are changing and it’s pretty acceptable now. Japan’s drinking culture is insane, but at drinking parties you can just be like “I’m not drinking tonight,” and people are all “That’s cool. Here’s the non-alcoholic menu.” And I’m a drinker and enjoy drinking with friends, but if my friends don’t want to drink, it’s all good with me. Even had to step in to cut off people or sit in and be like “dude, you need to fix your shit before you drink again.” Good drinking friends keep you safe, and will be the ones to call you out if you aren’t.

Recovering Alcoholic here. Needless to say I’m glad I stopped drinking.
I’ve fallen back down a couple of times, but the plus side is that every time I over indulge now I’m immediately reminded why I stopped drinking. And now I have the same conversation with myself every time I consider the liquor store “this is what will happen, you’ll go buy some alcohol, you’ll promise to not over drink, you’ll over drink anyway, and you’ll wake up the next day half blind and wanting death. So for those reasons we’re not going to the liquor store” and surprisingly that’s helped big time.

@@n1k0659 yeah, hangover immunity was nice until I started recognising that I was going through litre bottles of vodka every couple of nights.
I don’t really know what changed for me, i think I kinda just reached a breaking point and I was like “Y’know I actually hate drinking… I’m gonna see how long not drinking goes for” and then I was off alcohol completely for like 3 months, happened the same way with cigarettes where I was just like “I don’t like this anymore, I’m gonna stop” and just stopped, but I digress those 3 months was enough of a detox to have my body reset and now it’s like 2 rum and cokes makes me feel like garbage the next day. I actually kinda like that I get hangovers now, like I said, they’re a good reminder as to why I stopped drinking all together in the first place.

He then reflects on a month when he quit booze entirely. Told me he has the "greatest clarity" and "felt amazing", despite this after this month, he went right back to drinking. After the conversation my realization was that many of us "normal" people are actually hidden addicts. it just unnoticed by society because alcohol is so readily available and accepted.

Which we are but I've only ever had any real fuckups until vodka 16 yrs ago. Even after that and a bipolar diagnosis I'm still fighting, even sober. The big problem is you think all you got to do is stop drinking and yeah you do you just don't drink but eventually the shit that me you want to drink in the first place is going to come back. That's why I always try to explain to some people that it's more a symptom of a problem I have then the actual cause. ALSO side note: WHY , for the love of god WHYYYY are we telling people new to drinking that "it's an acquired taste and they will get used to it"
IM SORRY BUT IF SOMETHING TASTES BAD WHY ARE WE SUPPOSED TO IGNORE OUR INSTINCT AND FORCE OURSELVES TO DRINK IT OFTEN ENOUGH UNTIL WE GET USED TO IT??? We dont do that with any other food or drink .

But personally the reason I rarely drink anymore is the major hangover anxiety I get, but also I have pretty bad social anxiety so it sucks, it's like do I have a couple drinks at a party and really watch myself to not drink too fast or too much, or be miserable the whole night. But sometimes I get insanely anxious and a couple drinks just doesn't help and then I get too drunk :/ I'd like to stop drinking all together.. but then I just stop hanging out with people completely

Still, I never understood the appeal of getting so sloshed that the night ends up getting ruined for you or others. My parents (who struggled with alcohol intermittently in their lives) have taught me well in regards to consuming alcohol; enjoy it slow enough so you know when it's getting too much, and never drink when you're feeling down because it'll just make you spiral.

That's why craft beer and whiskey are my go to, I feel like I actually just enjoy the adventure of going to all these breweries, meet the brewers, try their recipes out. It's like a social thing for me, and the actual fun of getting to be served something a crew spend months preparing for you is rewarding to me. It's always been a social/adventure thing I enjoy while I'm drinking, not a means to an end.

Those were the only 2 things that would ever make a hangover feel better. I think it is because when you are hungover, your body is in desperate need of hydration and the caffeine is just caffeine and makes everything in life better.

If you are using alcohol as a way to mitigate the issues caused by said abuse, then you are not alone. I developed coping mechanisms to help deal with being an emotional punching bag from my abusive dad. They helped get through the abuse but now they are a hindrance in my daily life. I've made some improvements but further improvement will take a lot of time. Alcohol will temporarily disable those coping mechanisms though which is nice while I work on getting rid of them completely.
I do recognize that it isn't a healthy use of alcohol though which is a key part of it. Using it without that recognition is straight up dangerous IMO

I've tried multiple times and was able to be sober for several months on several occasions until I went around people I shouldn't have and or didn't watch out for situations to avoid so I wouldn't drink, I've relapsed more than once but it's part of the process of being able to actually quit. @@justhere630 Hang in there mate. I find that overcoming addiction is comprised of two incredibly difficult tasks; wanting to quit, and actually carrying it out. Often, we can only manage one at a time, and you wind up either drinking and regretting because you want to quit, or struggle with sobriety and you don't want to quit because sobriety is the reality you drink to escape from.
You can do it though. It can be done. People say each day is a victory, but I say that's not enough. Each time you get the urge to drink, and you stop yourself? That is a victory. That can happen thousands of times in a day, and at first it may feel draining, but that's a thousand victories in a single day - and you'll need every victory you can get to truly break the cycle. You gotta be really passionate about them, celebrate each one.
I wish you the best of luck, and at 23, you have the incredible power of youth on your side. Take advantage of that, because the older bad habits get, the harder they are to break.

My last drink was December 18, 2021, after a decade of drinking, with the latter half being an unbroken streak. I can confidently say stopping was the single best decision I've ever made in my life. The best way I can describe giving up alcohol is that it feels like becoming a child again - think about how much you used to look forward to life, all of the awesome memories you formed as a child, how excited you got to see friends, play video games, listen to music, etc. After quitting, you start looking forward to stuff again, you have immediate access to all the things that you used to rely on alcohol for, you feel great in the morning, you think more clearly, sleep feels refreshing again... you literally get your humanity back when you stop. It absolutely is worth it, and if anyone in your circle takes issue with that, they shouldn't be in your circle anymore, because they don't care about you.
No reasonable adult tells kids they should start drinking. We all know it's bad. We've just been socially shamed into justifying our addiction to alcohol. People who swear they don't have a drinking problem actually do have a drinking problem that they've just gotten really good at self-justifying.

Interestingly enough I STOPPED many of the things that I used to love. Or at least I thought I loved them. One being video games. I stopped drinking 8 months ago and I have had 0 urge to play video games. At first, it was a little depressing as video games have been one of my favorite things to do for like…..my whole life. So I was actually devastated at first when I had no desire to play. But I realized, at least in the last 10 years or so I just really liked to be drunk and play video games so when I stopped drinking….games stopped being fun. I feel stopping drinking doesn’t get you excited to do things but makes you really realize what you truly enjoy doing.
