There was an old drunk who was friends with my uncle (also an old drunk, lol). He was telling me about how he used to keep tarantulas to ... pollinate his pot plants maybe? It's been a long time. Maybe it was to scare people away from messing with them when he wasn't home, I forget, but they were inside plants.
He was telling me something about how he would put alcohol (or beer?) in his mouth, then put the spider in his mouth. I asked him why, and in a voice that seemed to imply this was the most self-explanatory thing in the world, he said "How else would I get them drunk?".
Probably just awful for the poor little guys, but this was the 70s and in an area where even now the education is just horrendously bad, so I'm sure the dude thought he was showing his little buddies a good time. I watched a documentary about pet-keeping in the animal kingdom, and there have been a few instances where animals have kept other animals as a sort of "pet." These cases have nearly all occurred either in captivity or in part because of a surplus of available food. Animals that don't have to worry about finding food are far more likely to exhibit interspecies companionship, including a chimp caring for a dog, and a cat caring for duckings as if they were kittens.

Yep my favorite example of this is the curious case of the tarantula who keeps a toad as a companion to eat the smaller insects and such that would go after the tarantulas eggs. When in danger the tarantula will move it's body over the toad or allow it to jump under it. What's more they did experiments to see if they recognized the toad by taking skin samples from their toads and attaching them to ones they would normally eat. While they initially went after them as normal once they got close they immediately backed off.

Additionally, when describing the African Pygmy Hedgehog, you showed a European hedgehog. Most modern pet hedgehogs are African Pygmies, but with a bit more research, you might find the original domestic hedgehogs to be a different species. I anticipate the first domesticated hedgehogs were Indian hedgehogs, which were kept by the ancient Persians at least as far back as 4000 BC, and venerated as a sacred animal in Zoroastrianism.

    1. You probably already know this, but for others who may not: sugar gliders aren't flying squirrels. They are marsupials that convergently evolved gliding.
    2. Elephants are tough to classify. I wouldn't call them domesticated like livestock, but rather tamed, because they're very hard to breed in captivity. I once heard the saying that if it's on a farm, it's domesticated, but if it's in a circus, it's tamed. (Except for horses, of course).
    3. As for reptiles, I'm surprised you didn't include bearded dragons. They're amazing little critters who can be very affectionate toward their owners, which is unusual for reptiles.
Anyway, thanks again for everything, and I'm looking forward to the next video!

True story - I had a friend in Denver who had a pet ocelot. He used to tell visitors' "Do not pet the cat". I spoke to one such fellow who did not take the advice, and I asked him how it went. He showed me a picture of his arm, and said; "Bloody hell"... 😮

So afterall. It is entirely true and factually correct to state: "The humans best friend is the dog"
Also the different ways of domestication show in the way we have bred our pets.
Dogs for thousands of years are purpose bred (or were) and thus we have such great variety of dog breeds (Sheperd Dogs, Protection dogs, etc.) meanwhile cats and humans just saw the benefit of each other and, because cats already did already the thing we humans wanted them to do (for us) hunting rodents and pests, we let them do their own thing for the most part.
Also I never knew that rabbits and ferrets are entirely of European origin...Both cute and, incase of Ferrets, super weird yet interesting :D
