Apparently, King John loved his dogs and there is a painting of him playing with them. It is said that the infamous monarch found animals easier to be around than people. I can empathise with him there. And when one of Queen Alexandra ‘s little terriers died, the Queen was so distraught she wouldn’t let the servants take the dog away for burial. He stayed in Alexandra ‘s room. Obviously, the smell became intolerable and her ladies begged her to allow the little corpse to be buried. One day, they were serving egg sandwiches for afternoon tea and smelling them, the Queen sobbed.....’just like my little ???? ‘ whereupon there was much hysterical laughter, and the Queen, realising the absurdity of the situation, allowed her dog to be taken away and buried.

Queen Victoria's dog Islay is pronounced "ai-luh", like the whiskey. Also, the Borzoi is a Russian Wolfhound, for it is one of a number of sight hound breeds that were used for wolf hunting. Best known of these is probably the Irish Wolfhound.

So I live in a somewhat small town here in Germany, which is a town mostly known for a lot of it's baroque sights and parks as well as a Richard Wagner (ugh, though) inspired opera festival. A lot of the baroque buildings were built in the name of Wilhelmine of Prussia and there are pictures of her with her dog you can look at. It has even been painted on the ceiling of a church in town. They even have a special exhibit for kids in which the dog acts as a guide and narrator. Long story short though: It looks a lot like our puggle so I went into a stupor of laughter in the middle of a church at some point. It's kinda funny to see that not a lot has changed when it comes to people finding ways to spoil and adore their pets.

There is a fantastic story about Benjamin Harrison using a cart drawn by a goat to give his young grandson a ride - until the goat took off out of the White House and Harrison had to run down Pennsylvania Avenue after it to catch it! 🤣
I would like to point out that the dog shown in 2:23 is the Kokoni, a breed of companion dogs that appear in ancient Greek art. Said dog still exists in Greece, virtually unchanged throughout the millennia. Very sought after and popular, it is often adopted from shelters or found roaming free in small villages.
I recall reading that once upon a time Queen Alexandra was visiting her native Denmark, and while staying there, two of her great nephews, Frederik and Knud, took one of her dogs and put them in a basket before raising it in a flagpole... I doubt that she was amused! Frederik would eventually grow up and become Frederik IX, our current queen's father
The Dog of choice across Europe was the Phalene, which look like a papillon but with floppy ears..the Papillon is a descendant of the Phalene and a chihuahua bred for the queen of Spain who was from France and the daughter of Catherine de Medici and Henri II. Her husband was Philippe II, the widower of Mary I of England (Bloody Mary Tudor) and the same guy that launched the Spanish Armada against the English...
The Phalene is still a rare breed as the French slaughtered them during the French Revolution as they were a sign of the Aristocracy. The breed lived on in countries around France and have been slowly re-introduced to the country 232years after the the attack upon the Bastille. Today there are about 50 born a year in France, so quite rare and pricey. Those are the dogs you see in the portraits from the Renaissance and the Baroque epochs, Louis XIV declared that all the Phalene's born in France were his, and his alone so everyone was obliged to bring their litters of newborn puppies to him and he then gave them as gifts to choice nobles, mistresses, family, and diplomats...
I can think of many portraits and paintings where dogs and cats are depicted but never thought they were as abundant as pets, like that fact is never actually brought up by historians. I can't even imagine with the poor hygiene of most royals in certain periods and lack of toilet etiquette, much less having pets freely roaming and doing their business everywhere with curtains and carpets. As someone who is highly allergic to cats and dogs, and has still kept one for a long time, a single pet is already a lot of work and time, it requires extra cleaning of the house, which makes me question if most of these pets were properly taken care of.
Catherine Howard's favorite animals were dogs and in the tudors Henry gave Catherine Howard some dogs then Catherine Howard gave some away to Anne of cleaves
Surprised you didn’t mention Anne Boleyn and her dogs Orion and Porkoy. She loved raising dogs like Henry VIII but Orion was her prized greyhound who she always took hunting. Purkoy was her lap dog (popularised by her time in the french court), and was named after the french term “pourquoi?” meaning “why?” because the dog always turned its head as though asking a question. Purkoy was killed by falling out a window 5 days after Henry and Anne’s act of succession was approved by parliament, which some suspect was done intentionally to hurt the Queen - everyone was apparently so aware of how sad she’d be, only the king felt comfortable breaking the news to her

Honestly not disappointing your pet by having hello fresh at home is the best pitch I have heard, and i already enjoy their food!
I enjoyed seeing this “other side” to the many royals. We all love our furry companions!
You have such an amazing way of making your videos feel like a personal story-telling opposed to a lecture-y educational video! I love to listen to them while working
Queen Victoria's dog Islay is pronounced "ai-luh", like the whiskey. Also, the Borzoi is a Russian Wolfhound, for it is one of a number of sight hound breeds that were used for wolf hunting. Best known of these is probably the Irish Wolfhound.
Borzois are pretty cool dogs. I remember when I was a kid, one of my parents friends (a big guy) saw somebody beating one. He literally took the dog from him right there. He would come with him when he visited, and he was such a good boy.
It's almost midnight and I'm crying at the thought of a loyal, confused, scared dog trying to understand why Mary was beheaded, the poor thing, I'm glad to hear they were sent to be cared for by a princess though
The fact that there is such a thing as "Chief Mouser" makes me so happy
The story of the badly behaved terriers had me in stitches. I got a Jack Russell to be a working dog, and she has loads of energy, but is much better behaved. What I wasn't prepared for is how affectionate she is. My clothes are plagued with hair now.
I never knew that my dog was beneath my garments until I placed my neck on the chopping block. I tried to tell the swordsman but I just prayed instead. Oh, the memories kept on coming back. Thank you, Lindsay, for featuring me once again.
Lol
Your backkk!! I haven’t seen you in a while!
@@SungSNam Kaiya! My beloved subject! It's a pleasure seeing you again in this comments section. I was out for a while doing some royal duties. How are you? I hope you're doing fine!
@@maryqueenofscots2511 glad your back! I wish I could say I was fine but this ATCE guy is causing a ton of problems so I’m kinda stressed
Spaniel’s are such good dogs. I had cocker spaniels growing up and a springer as an adult. All absolutely wonderful, loyal dogs. Now I’m just with my two cats
I think this is the first video you've made that I've ever cried watching 🥺
Unique topic, Lindsay. Didn't know anything about royal pets
Ditto.
@ATCEDo you actually watch her videos or are you just here to spread hate?
YOU ARE NEARLY HITTING 500K!
Hype!
I just noticed that too! She literally just got to 400k!!!!
I know right? In three months!!!
The Queens corgis were bred through the Rozavel line belonging to Mrs Thelma Gray. She was friend to my mother who is now in her 80's. I met Thelma in the 1970's..an amazing lady. She emigrated to Australia with her only child, Jeremy. She was a friend to the Queen since her teens and told wonderful stories. Some really GOOD stories about certain members of the royal family!!!![The kind that have you checking wedding dates!! My parents also bred corgis for 4 decades.Thelma died in the 1980's but I will always remember her massive diamond ring! You could sit an Aussie 10 cent piece on it and still see diamond!! Every time she was staying at my parents home and saw me walk in she would take it off and let me wear it the whole time. My love of diamonds began there!
Just the thought of the dogs panicking when their hoomans were executed, noooo i can't handle it omg.
Thanks

Surprised you didn’t mention Charles’ nephew, Prince Rupert- his poodle, Boye & another one whose name wasn’t known- the prince was accused of witchcraft, & Boye was called his familiar- he eventually died in battle, I believe...
I hugged my girl close after hearing about poor Queen Mary's pup 💔 other than that, wonderful video!!!
Thanks, as a devoted Dog Mom, I loved this video.
This is so funny about cats “glimpsing into hell”- we used to joke about our cat seeing into hell with her 1 eye! Didn’t know that was a historically accurate claim hahahaha
My Jack Russell Molly is laying at my head on my pillow while I’m watching this. 🤗🐶
My jack russells do that too!
I loved this video! I wish she mentioned Jimmy & Joy, pets of the Grand Duchesses of Russia, Jimmy was Anastasia's pet & comfort during the captivity. He was sadly killed when the execution/murder was ordered that night on July 17th, 1918. Joy escaped the massacre
Omg that doggie wedding was one for the books!
I can I get over this. I’ve never heard that story about her execution before. Why do they always leave that part out? That’s a huge detail to leave out that the dog was literally under her dress the entire time and stayed there until she died. Poor baby 😭
I’ve always loved animals. When I was born, my parents had a Terrier/Lhasa Apso mix named Maize who was the most obedient dog ever. She died when I was 8 years old and it broke my heart. I also adopted a kitten when I was 10 using saved money. He died 4 years later and I was devastated. I bought a hamster last year during the pandemic and he’s a silly little creature. My ultimate goal is to one day own another Lhasa Apso.
My Mother had a Lhaso Apso. Very intelligent and sassy dogs.
Same, I've always been surrounded by animals. When I was 8 my parents got me and my little sister a lab-mastiff. Unfortunately I can't see Jim anymore because when my parents divorced and I got kicked out the man kept him, but now we have my step-dad's pit bull so we're happy
Imagine going to the palace and seeing Josephine's kangaroo hopping about
She didn’t want to leave any young dogs behind :’) no one will treat our fur babies like we will 👌🏼
It is little wonder that our pets are so important to us. Thanks for this fascinating segment.
Lindsay, your dog is ADORABLE
I usually get annoyed by adds but Lindsay’s transitions are so smooth they are enjoyable
You should record audiobooks your voice is so calming
Ha! The dog looks at the camera like "are you coming?". That was sweet.
My kitten is on my lap as I watch this, pets are the ultimate best friend!!

I'm just so happy you mentioned Larry. Consider me a Larry fangirl, as cheeesy as it may seem. Awesome video !
Larry has many fans, he gets more fan mail than the prime minister, so you are not alone
You can do this exact same topic for US Presidents... they've had a variety of animals who have lived with them at the white house.
Didn't Teddy Roosevelt's sons bring a pony up the elevator of the White House
There is a fantastic story about Benjamin Harrison using a cart drawn by a goat to give his young grandson a ride - until the goat took off out of the White House and Harrison had to run down Pennsylvania Avenue after it to catch it! 🤣
@@ladyjanegrey1671 Yep.
The UA-camr Mr Beat has a good video on this subject
That transition to hello fresh was smoooth
All of these royal pets look very interesting! It's nice to know that everyone regardless of social class love having pets! ❤
Ok, I’m gonna need more info about the Queen’s new corgi puppy.
Yes. I would love to hear about the puppy.
I absolutely love your channel! I was actually talking to a friend about royal pets last week! :)
Thanks!
Lindsay, how do you survive those sad doggo eyes? I would give him everything. Lol
Purkoy was killed by falling out a window 5 days after Henry and Anne’s act of succession was approved by parliament, which some suspect was done intentionally to hurt the Queen - everyone was apparently so aware of how sad she’d be, only the king felt comfortable breaking the news to her
Hunting dogs are my favorite 💜 I especially love sighthounds 🐕
This was a very amusing video, watching it with my cat who thinks that she herself is royalty!
Well she is. You are but a servant of her Royal Court.
Your dog is such a cutie patootie! 😍🥰
Your doggo is so cute!
Lindsey, your videos are awesome. I can't wait for each new edition. Thanks for the inspiration to research. Our families histories are tied to the Royal's history. What affected them affected we commoners.

CORGIS!!
Corgis are extremely famous at this point because of them being royal pets.

Queen Mary’s dog was the DOAT
Aww the painting of the black and white Chief Mouser is so sweet
I'd love to see "A History of Royal Horses" as a follow-up!
I was thinking the same.
That and the horses of the US presidents because GOOD LORD there are a ton of them.
I see you left out Frederick the Great's beloved Italian greyhounds (who he requested to be buried with, a wish that wasn't honored until 1991!) so you have material for a sequel 😉
I'd most definitely be in the CAT CASTLE!!! 😸
Omg I clicked so fast! 😍
Do you mind making a video about how royals lived? Like what type of beds did they have back then?
That was one slick transition into your ad,I liked that !
Can't remember where I heard this, but I remember Victoria (unintentionally) shrinking a dog breed(the dogs was originally knee height, but Victoria's breeding made their descendants today small af)
Ring any bells anyone?
How can anyone despise pugs? 23:13
That tribute to Dash, though. *tears up* He was the goodest boy.
You should make a series about the 6 mothers-in-law that Henry VIII had. Isabella I of Castile (Catherine of Aragon mother), Lady Elizabeth Howard (Anne Boleyn mother), Margery Seymour/Margery Wentworth (Jane Seymour mother), Maria of Jülich-Berg (Anne of Cleves mother), Joyce Culpeper (Katherine Howard mother), Maud Green (Catherine Parr mother).
That was a smooth sponsor segway, complete with pup. Nice job!
Lindsay please make a video on cooking a royal recipe. 😍😍
When she said that the Corgis lived in the Corgi Room, I thought of the Corgi Car from Infinity Train
the ad transition was really well done
