Ed Sullivan always looked like a grumpy old dude but he really knew what audiences wanted. His show was must see TV on Sunday evenings, especially for those of us growing up in small town America. Every week he would have a wide variety of acts but typically there would be a singer or band for the older folks (think Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Patti Page, etc.), a comedian or two, a novelty act (like dogs doing tricks or a magician), a segment from a popular Broadway show done by the leads (mostly musicals but plays too), and a popular music act for the teens. Family entertainment at its best. He introduced so many to the American masses. Obviously the Beatles but I first learned of comedians Joan Rivers, Stiller and Meara, and George Carlin. The Muppets were semi-regulars long before Sesame Street or The Muppet Show. I saw Julie Andrews doing some of her Broadway shows before she ever made a movie, and so many more.
Do watch (even if only for yourself) Tina singing this live in Wembley at 60 years old, there are no words. Would like to suggest you watch Brian Gibson's 1993 brilliant biopic of Tina "What's love got to do with it" with Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett, Tina was one of a kind.
No one had the energy that Tina did. She was absolutely amazing, and I loved her…still love her music. Ike was an abusive man, and would beat her. Once she left him, she came well into her own. I’m glad she was able to escape him.
All of THIS!!! the version by Tina is hands down my favorite of allllll time! Especially the one where they start off ‘nice’ hahahaha… I don’t care what anyone says, nobody can touch this song the same way ✨✨
I remember watching this the first time......what I would give for tv would be like it was then.....pure talent and entertainment coming into your living room giving you a break from the drama of the world.....
When even John Fogerty himself said that the song was now hers! This same thing happened when Linda Ronstadt covered The Rolling Stones song "Tumbling Dice"!
I wish you could find her doing this song when she went solo,She is mezmerising! I watched her in a cincert in Brazil and she had to be late 4os eart 50s,never missed a step and the song was alot longer!❤❤❤❤
I was fortunate enough to see the Tina musical right before she passed. Almost days literally. What a show! She taught all the actors her dance moves personally and it was glorious. The closest I ever got to seeing Tina live. The musical was brutal in parts but she was so triumphant in the end that you couldn’t help but be overjoyed for her. Nothing was glossed over. I was introduced to a lot of Tina’s music during boot camp. We went to sleep to either the “What’s Love Got to Do With It” album or anything by Luther. Good memories!
😊❤ Hi Black P! I love your rants!! LOL 😂 And so far I agree with you! 😅 Next, while this young Tina's performance is still fresh in your mind - Tina live at Wembley, 2000 Proud Mary - is an absolute must!! It's from her last concert tour. She was about 4 months away from her 61st birthday. She is still in 6 inch heels, a 6 inch hemline and shakin it better than anybody else can!! LOL 😂 I'm not kidding! But it's the performance of her life! Tina has you hanging on every single moment from the beginning!! The 'intro' itself is about 2.5 minutes!! LOL 😂 The whole performance is about 9.5 minutes!! 😮😃 I swear it will go in your book as some of the best 9.5 minutes of your life! (As compared to other things under 10 minutes!) It really would be a shame for you to miss it! And rhe comparison between the two videos is awesome! She got better every single day of her life! I miss her! 😢😇 Luv ya! 😊❤❤
You've reacted to Credence Clearwater Revival's original of this song, right? This is a cover of the CCR song. In the studio version of this, Ike and Tina start out slowly, then go into this crazy pace of it. Both groups had huge radio hits with the song. There were a ton of variety shows on TV in the '60s, but Ed Sullivan was the top of them. His show came on Sunday night and everybody watched it. In the late '60s, lots of pop stars also hosted their own variety shows that featured some musical acts, some comedy sketches, some dancers, some stand-up comedians, and some "novelty" acts like acrobats or plate spinners or even puppeteers. They were sort of the next step forward from the old traveling vaudeville shows, and some of the older comedians had actually traveled and performed in vaudeville.
Love Tina❤❤ My whole life my Father was in love with Tina. She was his celebrity Love. He always said she had the best legs of anyone, and she definatly did.
Tina was a symbol of courage and strength. She was so severely abused by Ike. She preservered and had an amzing career and found love again.. An amazing performer. She was loved and admired.
Canadian here, saw Tina Turner at our Air Canada Centre in Toronto in the very early 2000's, she was fire and she had been older at that time too. Full concert she never stopped, those legs of hers in those heels kept strutting. Always said I wanted to see her and the Rolling Stones live before I died LOL. Saw the Stones 'Bridges to Babylon' tour, in the mid to late 1990's at our Skydome, another freaking awesome concert. Folks were smoking weed the entire time LOL...my friends too.
And she did this song well into her 70's!! She had great legs all her life! Your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦
The High Priestess of Rock 'n' Roll! She'll do this iconic number throughout her long career & while post 60 y.o. her dancing slows her vocal performance & stage presence mega increases. She becomes master of the vamp, the tease, the come on, just excellent. Just when you think she couldn't get any better, she magnificently levels up. There is vid of her in her later years performing this in Paris & Amsterdam, amongst other venues & it's astounding, electrifying. Yes, this was written & first performed by CCR. I like both versions! Why does one have to be 'better' than the other??? Like comparing apples to oranges.
My 15 yo self was blown away by seeing this on TV. We watched Ed Sullivan every week, always hoping to see one of the cool groups for "the youngsters" as Sullivan used to say. Most were fairly subdued, usually lip synched (by Sullivans instructions) and we just took it for what it was. Then came Tina and I can't think of a more energetic eye popping performance. Iconic 😍🤩
Good afternoon. I am now 75, but at any time in my life, Tina Turner said,” Come with me”, I would quit whatever I was doing, and follow those legs anywhere! I saw her Private Dancer tour,. Talk about a great show.
The Ikette with the long hair is “Claudia Lenner” she was the inspiration behind The Rolling Stones “Brown Sugar” and David Bowie’s “Lady grinning smile”. She was stunning.
Saw Ike and Tina Turner and BB King in Monroe, Louisiana on July 3rd, 1971. She put on a great show -- she WAS the show!! On the way home they announced on the radio Jim Morrison died.
Yeah, you could say their relationship was a little problematic. Ike tried to kill her on multiple occasions and kept her terrified. Back in those days it was even harder for a battered woman to escape.
@@SonnyMscichowski then HE shouldn’t have downplayed it by saying “problematic” and just not addressed it at all. Glossing over extreme abuse helps no one but the abuser
Love Tina and what she went through and her story is amazing! I grew up in St Louis and she might have not been there long but she did live there in her early life and we are Proud she did!!! I'm there for seeing early performances! They taught all the younger generations and that's flowed on down! Your point of view makes me look at things differently and I love it! ❤ (I do feel like I keep saying I'll show up to a lot lately... ROFL (my husband and I would love a live anything to participate in as members wink wink nudge nudge)) ❤❤❤
I can remember watching this on The Ed Sullivan Show. I was just a little kid but I was impressed. The Doors was also on the Sullivan Show. They did " Light my Fire ". The censors forbid them to sing the line " girl we couldn't get much higher. " He agreed but sang it. Jim Morrison was arrested right on stage.
Back in the day, everyone watched The Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday nights. He showcased all the popular entertainment acts -singers, groups, dancers, comedians, musicians, actors, etc.
Ok, yes it’s a cover but Tina seriously owns it! She is swag personified. AND excuse me Tina is the finest one in that group of women, she is the star attraction and the sexiest one there!! A lot of artists got their style and moves from her and that era. As amazing a star as Tina is here (steals the show IMO) you need to see Tina doing this on her own and with a really awesome twist in the style, way better I think, especially then way she teases the crowd is so fun, check it out from her concert at Wembley 2000 where she was 60yo doing Proud Mary and please check out Nutbush from the same concert!! The whole damn concert is phenomenal!! Come on BP, more Tina - GO! ❤️
Yep I agree, and I watched a performance, not sure if it’s the same one you’re talking about? But she still rocking it she did not miss a beat and she did it in stilettos!!
The backup singer you pointed out did background vocals for many famous singers and bands. She hooked up with Mick Jagger and was in Playboy. She was also featured in the documentary 20 Feet from Stardom. That is a great documentary to watch because you really learn about how important the backup singers were to the biggest stars in the industry.
Great reaction to an amazing woman! You should react to a more recent live of this when she was about 60 and did this - Rocking it! Live in Arnhem Netherlands. Its on her channel. She outperforms the 20-something year old backups on stage with her. She is amazing! Private Dancer. Thunderdome.. amazing.
Claudia Lennear! is the Ikette on the right. She went on to a career with Leon Russell and a solo career as well. Brilliant and gorgeous as you said. Still living!
Private Dancer was the album that catapulted Tina into the life, fame and fortune she deserved. "What's love got to do with it?" was a massive hit among several from that album. I was lucky enough to see Tina during the Private Dancer tour. As I remember, she was just as dynamic to watch in the 80s, and her costumes were skimpier. Rolling on the River is a standard, it is one of the songs from Tina's earlier career before she was a solo act.
Tina could not only sing like crazy, but dance too. She always had the most fabulous legs, but she certainly worked very hard to stay in amazing shape.
You should do Tina doing this live in later life omg she was over 60 when she done it an what a truly amazing woman she was, she's done she real wonderful songs R.I.P. Tina ❤❤❤
You need to check out Tina Turner at Wembley Concert singing Proud Mary ( she was 60 and still a powerhouse....heels and mini dress). She had some legs and what a voice and aged like fine wine. Speaking of Beyonce........ She did the Kennedy Center Honors tribute to Tina and sang Proud Mary. Tina was big in the U.S. but had more fame in Europe. You should watch the movie about Tina's life with Ike....."What's love Got To Do With It" If you are familiar with the reality tv show "Sweetie Pie's" .. The woman that owns that restaurant in or around St.. Louis, Missouri was one of Tina's back up singer when she was with Ike. Black people didn't wear their natural hair back then until the 70's when across became popular. Know your history. In order for black people to fit into white society,b they had to blend in and straighten their hair. They still couldn't go into or use a lot of white establishments or facilities. Jim Crow laws were still used in the south. Separate and unequal. Even big stars that were black couldn't sleep or eat in hotels where they were performing. Things were better for black entertainers in the north. Now black men are shaving their heads and black women do whatever they want to with their hair. The Ed Sullivan Show started in the 50's and sent into the 70's. All the best acts were on his show.
I'm an old man. I remember these days. I loved Tina's performances. What might surprise you is how popular she is in Australia. She somehow got imbedded into the rugby community down there and just took off.
This was a CCR song (John Fogerty), but Ike and Tina's cover made it famous by putting out a recording that starts out SLOW AND EASY then builds up to this tempo, gradually.
Late night tv was worth watching when I was growing up. I had a lot of ear infections growing up so I was awake a lot of nights. So thankful I got to see a lot of these growing up that offers didn't. Tina went to have her hair bleached but her hair fell out. That's where the wigs came into play. Pure accidental. She wore them from that day on. I miss her 💔 (and yes I'm white) Marvin was killed in my birthday 84. Hurts. I love his songs. I know someone famous that travels non stop - I asked him to sing Marvin - he won't do it out of respect for him. I get it and respect him for that. Everyone else he'll do when he's home.
I’m always amazed that we are the same age BP. In high school all us girls would do this dance to this song. Everyone knew that little dive into the music, it was iconic! And Tina’s hair whip. And we all knew the CCR version and this one. I remember trying to find a dress with fringe like Angela Bassett wore in What’s Love Got to Do With It for a semi formal in high school! I’m glad you are learning though. It’s so cool to see where things come from and find out that something that seems so original, came from years ago. Now you need to check out Garrett Morris as Tina doing this song on Saturday Night Live. It is SO funny and will brighten your day!! He is an original cast member and definitely a name you should know!
Anybody who was anybody was on the Ed Sullivan show. It was a staple in most american households on Sunday evenings. Rock, Soul, the British invasion, comedy, you name it, he had them all.😊
We all know NO-ONE would have ever heard of Ike Turner without Tina!!! I wish she could have gotten out sooner😢. Without her talent there would have been no money, but she had to give up everything to leave.

I had the pleasure of seeing Tina Turner in concert 27 years ago. I was 8 months pregnant at the time and the baby kept rolling and dancing to the music. Everyone around me was waiting for me to go into labor. Tina had the same energy and danced even better then she is in this video. At 84 she is still rolling!!
Check out 1949 Ike Turner on Rocket 88 with Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats. The first rock and roll song. Ike was the first rock and roll lead guitarist.

RIP Queen Tina.
Thanks for sharing this, Robert.
Tina pure bad ass, amazingly strong and talented. Also, my kryptonite always loved Tina..... RIP Beautiful soul...
The Queen of Rock n Roll 👑
I’ve got 4 versions of this song . In my playlist .
CCR, ELVIS , Tina Turner , and a singer from the voice ! Love them all .
Tina Turner = Class, Beauty, Talent, Courage. Absolute treasure. I needed a day off when she passed.
Tina will forever be THE QUEEN. Period!
She still had all that energy up until the end. She was fantastic!
Totally agree, Tina’s own live version of this at Wembley 2000 is phenomenal. ❤
@@liz6965 I have watched it so many times and I'm always left in awe of her energy and talent.
CCR! John Fogerty’s version is excellent.
The original as he wrote it.
Tina was a big influence specifically on Mick Jaggers stage presence, among many others. Legend!
Jagger disputes this. After all - he was moving like this long before anyone heard of Tina Turner.
No one had the energy that Tina did. She was absolutely amazing, and I loved her…still love her music. Ike was an abusive man, and would beat her. Once she left him, she came well into her own. I’m glad she was able to escape him.
Blessed to see Ike And Tina Turner Revue . They were the a opening Act for The Jackson5!
Wow, Amazing Talents.
Tina was like a force of nature on stage. The physical conditioning to dance and sing the way she did is incredible
One of the greatest performers of our time. RIP Tina Turner....
CCR wrote it and when Tina sang it, she then owned it!
Meh, she rented it, & John Fogerty didn't beat down any CCR fellers, or get beat up by them, singin' it.
The Truth !!!
Opinion
I like CCR best...but it's fun watching Tina
When even John Fogerty himself said that the song was now hers!
This same thing happened when Linda Ronstadt covered The Rolling Stones song "Tumbling Dice"!
Tina is iconic for a reason.
I wish you could find her doing this song when she went solo,She is mezmerising! I watched her in a cincert in Brazil and she had to be late 4os eart 50s,never missed a step and the song was alot longer!❤❤❤❤
This was a great song! They did an amazing rendition. I also loved their "River Deep, Mountain High."
See Tina Turner as The Acid Queen in the movie version of The Who's rock opera "Tommy". Those legs and voice were still fine when she got old!
It's her iconic trademark song❤ at least for me. She got more beautiful as she aged. Beautiful soul inside and out.
Tina was fine all the years of her life; a beautiful and talented soul through and through.
I saw Tina in the 90’s Shoreline south of SF, 20,000 in attendance what an amazing show, Tina was on fire!
Tina insured her legs. She had killer legs. Grew up watching her in her prime. Love her. RIP
Saw Tina live about 20 years ago with Joe Cocker as the opening act. One of the best concerts I’ve been to.
A other song is we don’t need another hero. She has a lot of great songs. Hope you wanna react to more Tina Turner. RIP Tina 🕊️
My favourite Tina song is River Deep Mountain High
Saw this exact line up..Ike & Tina in Youngstown ,Ohio....very lively show!
Check out more Ike and Tina turner. They wrote great songs and covered many songs in impeccable fashion!!
Iconic 😍🤩
Such a great high energy performance and all live with zero effects.
So happy you showed this one! I was around 17 then and just loved her!
Problematic is an understatement
This Chanel is about music and This man's reaction to the music. The personal life of Tina Turner is a topic for another show.
When it was so racist Ed Sullivan was one of the men that frequently had black performers on his nationally televised show.
Another one was Dick Clark of American Bandstand.
@@tracyepaul7872 That is true
The backup singer you pointed out did background vocals for many famous singers and bands. She hooked up with Mick Jagger and was in Playboy. She was also featured in the documentary 20 Feet from Stardom. That is a great documentary to watch because you really learn about how important the backup singers were to the biggest stars in the industry.
Claudia Linnear. Bowie’s Lady Grinning Soul is supposedly about her too, & it’s a gorgeous song.
@sukie584 thank you! I couldn't remember her name. 😁
You should watch the movie about Tina's life with Ike....."What's love Got To Do With It"
If you are familiar with the reality tv show "Sweetie Pie's" ..
Is that how she ended up in The Mad Max movie franchise?
I got to see them in Seattle in the early 70's! She was AMAZING 🤩
..."Class of 76"... Credence wrote it and continues to sing it but they gave it to Tina and that made this version hers forever...
It’s even better when Tina sings at her own concerts. She would start the song slowly and then halfway through up the tempo.
EVERYONE loved Tina!! She’s beautiful, my old white mom still lights up when we talk about Tina!!
I saw them in Vegas in 1973, Bill Cosby opened up for them. When they did this song she was in a bright orange fringe dress and the place was rocking!
Ed Sullivan was a starmaker in the early 60s. He introduced the biggest acts to the American consciousness. Elvis, The Beatles, The Doors, The Mamas & the Papas, Ike & Tina, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, so many!
Queen Tina! Tina and Bryan Adams - It’s Only Love - live. Tina was a Rock Queen!
Loved Tina. Credence Clear Water Revival originally did it. But Tina loved the song and continued to perform it until she retired. RIP Tina❤️
John Fogerty from Creedence wrote it & sung it when he was part of CCR.
So wonderful that she was strong enough to get out of her horrible marriage and made her own way..that takes strong center strenght
Ike Turner and Jackie Brenston wrote the first Rock and Roll song "Rocket 88"
When i was young my dad would play this song as more of a country vibe and my sisters and me always called this song Rolling down the River. We would yell at our dad please play Rollin down the river Daddy!!😂❤
you HAVE to see Tina Turner on Wembley concert 2000 - she was 60 years old and the best and epic I ever saw 🤯
And I would hardly recommend to do the documentary - it’s unbelievable, very heavy stuff.
Love from Austria 🇦🇹
