Server PSU Hack - HP DPS-800GB A, 12VDC 1000W

  • A guide on how to make the, HP DPS-800GB Rev. A, server power supply run outside of its server enclosure. A simple bridge between pin 31 and 34 is required and it is important to NOT drill holes through the GND and +12VDC output pads, this will risk short-circuiting the output as its a 4-layer PCB.

Frome what I can tell, the HSTNS-PR01 PSU is interchangable. I shorted the pins mentioned here, and it spat out 12 volts. Looking at getting a Vega 64, so the 800 watts will be useful. Going to splice some cables so all GPU and motherboard 12 volts comes from the server PSU, and a 450 watt SFX PSU I have laying around will handle the other voltages and 12 volts to drives etc.

Interesting, great little look at the PSU.
Atleast pin 34 was a dead giveaway, since the enable pins are alsways the shortest of the control pins.
(Atleast on all server PSUs I have ever seen)
Especially the newer kind with a fan control is really nice since the fan won't always run full power.

      I got a video on making a 36V cluster from DPS-750 PSUs: ua-cam.com/video/xRAlXCzsY3Q/v-deo.html
The limit of 3 in series seems to be a limit on the output components specifications and possible bad voltage sharing, most people that have 4 in series experience that the PSU in the end of the chain at ground rail fails after a short while.

    • @KaizerPowerElectronicsDk

You properly could, but remember that the highest voltage source will draw the most current. You have to think in impedance matching, I assume you want the PSU inthere to draw power from that and incase power fails, it runs on the battery instead? Its not that simple to just float a 12V battery, you will need to take it out and recharge it properly once in a while.

The 12V output is protected by current limiting and should reset upon current draw below threshold or from a power cycling (turn it on/off). If this does not work, you have most likely destroyed something in the controller circuit.
