The album mix on this is so high-end heavy that I always had a hard time hearing the bass. I had absolutely no idea that the verse is the same repeating two-bar phrase. When Miki and Emma switch from E to D, the bass hangs on E. It's so subtle, but it helps to explain why the verse never seems to resolve, and why the chorus is so effective. Such a great choice by the bass player (can't recall is it was Phil by this point.)
Nice analysis, thanks. It was Steve Rippon on bass for early Lush songs. Phil joined when Spooky was released, although Steve was still the bassist on the recordings. Phil went on to tour it and play on subsequent albums.
You summed it up perfectly, Adam. As a cover, this video is dull because the bass line isn't anything complex and Sam doesn't deviate from the original. However, the value of the video is that this is essentially the "how it should have sounded" version of the track. Sam replicates the original perfectly while improving the mix by restoring the bass. And GREAT tone, Sam! Honestly, the best sounding bass I've ever heard on UA-cam.
Thanks. No tabs for this I'm afraid. It's the same all the way through. Drop you tuning a semitone then frets 3, 5 and 7 and the open E(flat) are all you need. Ride the groove!
Perfectly played, mate. I would like to personally thank you, Sam. I had never heard of these chaps before. After hearing this cover, I have had your video on repeat countless times, amongst Lush's album, 'Spooky', which I recently bought to enrich my knowledge on their music and have come to really love it! Stay safe and well, Sam. PS, will there be any more Fall, Joy Division, or Bauhaus covers? Loved your Bombast cover, amongst your Isolation cover. I play bass myself (I'd like to think I'm good!) but always find that, despite Hooky's basslines being simplistic, they can be rather somewhat tedious to play. -Many thanks.
Thanks Nathan for the kind words and I'm glad to have introduced Lush to someone new! They're one of my favourite ever bands and I'll be doing more of their songs. Working on another Hooky bassline at the moment (New Order this time), also songs by Pere Ubu, The Ruts and Tune-Yards amongst others. Had a bout of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and a lack of time so haven't got as much playing in as I'd have liked recently. Any Fall or Bauhaus suggestions?
@@SamHutchinsonBass Hi, Sam. I've never heard of Pere Ubu, The Ruts or the Tune-Yards, so will have to check them out! For The Fall, a tune that I recently rediscovered was 'Fit and Working Again', and that bassline really stuck out, but one that I'd love to hear a cover of would probably be 'Return' (from Code Selfish, 1992) or maybe Telephone Thing from Extricate. And for Bauhaus, my suggestion would probably be Kick in the Eye. But to be honest, all of your covers sound wicked... It's probably because I am using a crappy amp (and do not own a pedal as of yet) and when I play them, they all sound so rubbish! But to conclude, many thanks for the reply! A lot of UA-camrs don't often reply when you comment on their videos, do they?! And any Bauhaus, Fall, or Hooky bass cover will put a smile on my face! I guess I mainly requested those because you have covered these on your channel and I like this music, but maybe there are covers you are planning on doing that will introduce me - and others to new [ sort of :) ] music. Many thanks.
Nice suggestion but I'm not sure how that one would work as the bass doesn't come in for more than a minute. It would just be me stood there waiting! There'll definitely be more Lush and I've been thinking about trying For Love next.
