Miku _Takanashi you very rarely hear him Described that way . In fact his musical ability is often cited as being limited. However with those limited skills he wrote some very memorable songs. In fact his technical playing skills and songwriting often play second fiddle to the drama surrounding his life, relationships and role in the "Seattle Scene" that epitomized "grunge" which is what most people are obsessed about more so than the music itself. He became an involuntary spokesman for a scene and generation in spite of his own self-admitted musical limitations and lack of desire to be famous. People have mythologized him as the saint that killed hair metal (something that everyone at the time not into that shit were thankful for) and romanticized his music/life. Kurt would be the first to agree with your assessment of his talent. That being said music isn't a competition so why bother comparing?
The first time I heard of Lush was about 1:30AM on a Sunday morning in March, 1991 when I awoke from a deep sleep on my couch; had the tv tuned into 120 Minutes on MTV. I thought I was dreaming while hearing this, sat up rubbed my eyes and saw these lovely girls singing this ethereal, angelic tune. I just sat there totally enraptured by the sonic blast, the jingly jangly guitars...I've never forgotten that moment.

As much as I love Miki and her more or less being what everyone thinks of when remembering Lush, Emma's contributions to Lush were what transformed the band into the beloved gem we all know and love now. She's an incredibly underrated guitar player (listen to Desire Lines or Never Never off Split and tell me I'm wrong). I also find that the majority of my favorite songs by Lush were written by her and not Miki. And then tragically we only ever got one song where she sang primary vocal and it was on an EP (Astronaut); it's one of the most underrated Shoegaze songs ever, much less Lush songs. The woman is essentially female Kevin Shields, she's awesome!
@@kevinshaw1387Unfortunately, I was unable to catch the Miki Bereny Trio this month when they swung through Los Angeles. However Miki’s voice is still very good.
One of my absolute favorite bands. I was lucky enough to see them in Chicago in the early '90s, they were incredible. This is one of my favorite songs ever by anyone. To put this in perspective, I have nearly 60,000 songs in my iTunes library in a wide variety of genres and have a record collection dating from 1964.
@@johnIZaUWL I saw them just before this in Detroit and was so stunned that I drove into Chicago and scalped tickets to the Chicago show. Amazing. The double bill of Lush and Ride is still top 5 ever.
It's still amazing how Emma and Miki still have the same connection musically. God, I was so relieved after watching this...2:49 had me sold. Plus, it was nice seeing dude on Bass again with these two fine ladies. The drummer isn't a slouch either. I really enjoyed watching this again....I just wish this team stayed together...
i saw Lush at Manchester Academy a couple of days ago. An incredible performance! I loved every second of the gig. Cheers to Lush! They need to stay together, don't Split! They had another album in them for sure
We are so lucky to see them together even though it was brief. I'm happy they were able to play together once again. I fear this is the last time but at least we were alive to see them healthy and echoing our songs we've never forgotten! Love and Peace Miki, Emma and the band.
WOW. Flanger heaven! Yeah, this song still makes the soul sparkle, shimmer, and shatter...over 30 YEARS later. I saw this band in 1991-1992 with Ride (another fantastic band) at the Edge in Palo Alto. Easily the best live performance I have ever seen.
I can't believe how I missed this amazing song + band when it was out first time around...trying to catch up on all the great music I missed. [el'sda2].
MY GIRLS ARE BACK also KCRW I love you to bits and pieces but no shots of Emma's hands?! - never mind, there they are wayy in during the solo. Awesome!
I was almost exclusively into extreme metal during the early 90s. I heard some songs from Spooky played on a local college radio station, however, and found them so infectious and mesmerizing that I had to go out and buy the CD, an effort which I regarded at the time as quite a risk since it was so different from the Carcass and Obituary that was my typical record-buying fare. I purchased Split and Gala on CD by the late 90s, then the Mad Love and Scar EPs earlier this decade (2010s) as digital downloads from Amazon.
I saw this band at DV8 in SLC in the mid-nineties. The thing that astounded me about this band was how tight they were. they seriously sounded like a studio recording. Rarely I see a band that can pull that off. And her voice sounded like some sort of wood wind instrument perfectly played. They were great.
This takes me back 30 odd years....I still prefer the early Lush stuff.....Miki was my rockstar crush back in the day..... Emma Anderson's phaser....Hell yeah !!! As for the harmonising......lovely !!!
Sounds great, but it seems weird to see Miki with black hair rather than the bright red hair we all remember. Got a bit of a Chrissie Hynde vibe going on, which is still totally cool. Like I say, sounds fantastic, and I like that for the last few years we have had one big Shoegaze reformation a year. MBV re-emerged in 2013, Slowdive in 2014, Ride last year, Lush this year (Which I totally called, incidentally)... Who could be next?
It's absurd how Emma Anderson's name gets ignored in every music magazine discussion about great guitar players. She's amazing.
That's what I have been saying. One of the best songwriters and guitar players and yet so underrated.
I know. She only went and wrote some of the greatest songs, ever.
But you can find Kurt Cobain qualified as a great guitarist... a joke
Thank you! She's definitely underrated. She also made some great music outside of Lush. Absolutely love her songwriting and guitar work.

MTV’s 120 Minutes and VH1’s Crossroads were like college radio stations, often showing videos of soon-to-be popular artists.

I had a similar experience with Slowdive! I woke from a sleep and heard Catch the breeze. Now they are my favourite band
I had some moments like that too. fell asleep listening to local college station and wake up to a new band that made me think i was dreaming.
I remember 120 minutes! ♥️ Those were the days!
i appreciate that they used the same guitars from the 90s
One of my fondest memories is hearing this song on 120 Minutes for the first time..It was an awaking.
Same. The video looked so lo-tech as well, which I thought was part of the band's initial charm.
Life is sad. People get old, but their music is still great.
this was a good era for indie music
missingno Shoegaze... The scene that celebrates itself.

they still sound good after all those years off.
I never tire of listening to this song.
15 year old me had a huge crush on Miki. They still sound great. Thank you KCRW for uploading this.
Me too lol
50yr old me still does
I’m 18 and I do lol
49 yo me does still. Read her book. Excellent
And plays a twelve string….👌
Such a badass beat. 1990 in the UK was an unforgettable year....
can't believe Miki and Emma still have their wonderful voices. Bravo to KCRW for posting this.

Their vocal harmonies are nothing short of angelic. Probably the gentlest voices I've ever heard.

(re:2.49) Yes great transition, more dramatic than in the original version I think.
Unfortunately no longer!
Phil King on bass
Two angelic voices.
omg....the goosebumps not felt for decades have returned. Thank you!
Twenty years and a long break later, and they still sounded great. Yes, everyone looks older, but that's twenty years passing and it happens.
Luckily good music is timeless and doesn’t know age 🖤
So good to watch them playing together even if it is a while ago now and Justin is such a solid drummer
Emma is a guitar genius
