But theres a part i forgot and its the most important part..the early grime artists are responsible for their own success. For the 1st time in black uk music grime was sucessful without the major mainstream music industry. Truly independent. Then the industry made a move to absorb the genre by throwing out mercury awards. So its an excellent e.g of successful entrepreneurialism..and they were black.

American here and I know he deserve a better interview. Been listening to grime for time now. They needed to do their research. They should’ve brought up how much more censored the mainstream media is in UK. So they had to take it to pirate radios to play it to the Londoners. Wiley had the studio to help the mandem record, he also started making the eskibeats which was what helped break away from the garage scene… so much is missing from this interview to help Americans truly understand Grime/UK culture period.

I am a Londoner and lived in the US for two years, live in Toronto now. Kano is right it’s better for UK artists not to worry about if Americans will be receptive to their music . I do not think they can. Our slang is different . The bars won’t hit their eardrums they way we want it too and technically they’re in a bubble so no matter what I don’t think it’ll reach. Toronto slang is similar to London that’s why Drake etc flow to Section Boyz , Stormzy and the likes .

How about you tell them how the UK government took out a 40% loan of their GDP to pay off the slave masters so millions of africans could be freed in 1809? We only just recently paid that off BTW. Or how about how we dedicated large resources to stopping the slave trade thereafter? We blockaded the whole west coast of africa for this, as well as the carribean.
So yeah, go cry somewhere else. There's still slavery going on in africa today. And guess what? There's not a white person in sight. Go solve that then come bitch about slavery.

Kano is a legend. I like hot 97 but they only put in real research and energy when it comes to artists they know and passionately follow. Kano deserves a lengthy in depth interview for all he has achieved and contributed to the music scene in the UK. This interview should have been directed towards him in my opinion rather than the usual formal introduction to Americans 🙄 even when Ebro asked him about lyrics and slang, I thought he was going to acknowledge Kano as one of the best lyricists to ever live but no, he treated it as a language barrier smh. I'm from the land of Trap music and have been listening since it's inception and loved it at first (It's gone down hill now in my opinion) without going to a strip club to hear it. lol But I don't expect them to understand a Southern thing like Trap because they are so New York. The easiest way to listen to grime is to surround yourself with Caribbeans (particularly Jamaicans) so your ear is trained on patois and dancehall music. Then bombard yourself with Grime music so that your ear gets used to the pace of the beat, lyrics, and bars.
I’m not British but the one thing that help me understand Grime when I first heard it was having Jamaican friends in college. It was tough to understand what they were saying but once I did (not fully), listening to grime got a little easier. Then it just took me constantly listening to the music (and urban dictionary), and CONTEXT of the words, to finally understand what they were saying. Now I can listen to Grime at any tempo and clock (understand) most of the bars.

I also said that listening to Grime frequently allows you to train your ears to the speed of spittoon’. Let’s say I did learn it because of Jamaicans, wouldn’t that be specific to my experience with Grime? In other words does it matter?

Even though America where it all started and was highly influential, especially through the gold era of hip hop the 90s and the noughties.
