Eloy is hands down the god of metal drummers! No one can come close to the ferocity or the technical ability that monster has! I don’t canes how fast a certain drummers can play, Eloy can play just as fast but he has so much more passion and technique than anyone else in metal.......not even close!
Watching Baard Kolstad for creative insanity and Eloy Casagrande for the pure insane energy ... there are loads of drummers that make my head explode .... Eloys one of them ....
What really makes the Eloy-era Sepultura cool is how effortlessly he blends highly technical death-metal derived drumming not only with that Brazilian percussion flavor but also how he can drop into something simple like a punky d-beat as well. Sepultura have always worn their love for crusty punk stuff on their sleeve as well as the heavy metal and when that shines through I think they are at their best.
When Max and Igor left, I was done with Sepultura, Here many years later...Seems i was Wrong and ignorant.....what a fu.. sick Drummer. Abselutely love his hard hitting style🤘
Means to an End my favourite song from the newest album of Sepultura. Its great. Thank you, Andrew. And hello from Russia. ps Eloy Casagrande is great drummer...
I have been following Sepultura since the start and i actually cry when Eloy plays with them live. MY FAKKING GOD!!!!!! YOU CANT FIND A BETTER DRUMMER BOTH TECHNICALLY AND PLAYING STYLE!
I firmly believe Eloy's a Dave Weckl level savant, he's pretty much the next step (leap) in metal drumming. The rehearsal footage that he regularly posts on his channel is completely ridiculous; his "Solo of the Brazilian Rhythms" is straight up next level stuff. As for Sepultura tracks there's the drum cams for "Desperate Cry (live)" and "Pentagram". Hope to see more Eloy over here. Cheers!
I concur with your post comments. As amazing as Tomas is, Eloy has the swing, groove (Latin feel), and power that catch most listeners ears, at least from my point of view. And, as a drummer, in the pocket groove hits me most. Not taking anything away from Tomas' amazing chops. It's like ice cream favors. We all like something different. Cheers.
Eloy's Evans Drumhead "Test Subject EC-005" vid is awesome. It's great that he still incorporates his Latin rhythmic influences & lets them shine through. Growing up in the 80s, I never was a big Sepultura fan. Music production/recording technology has come a LONG way. Their newer stuff, especially since Mr. Casagrande came aboard, has made lots of new fans. Hopefully, the man's doing lots of neck workouts. That Head-Bob is strong, and contagious...
Casagrande tem influencia de Meshuggah, ele disse em uma entrevista com seu professor de bateria. Que estava escutando Meshuggah. Essa linha de bataria tem influencia de Meshuggah.
Andrew, another Brazilian drummer you shoul definitely check out is Bruno Valverde, he is the drummer of the brazilian power metal band Angra but has a lot of other drum gigs as well. Last year Bruno did a tour with Smith/Kotzen (a project from the guitarrist Ritchie Kotzen and Adrian Smith from Iron maiden). Bruno even did the impossible job of learning the entire Sepultura setlist in 2 and a half days to quickly substitute Eloy in 3 gigs in the States after Eloy broke his leg. You should totally check him out.
Another awesome reaction! Thanks for the video, man! "Isolation" is another brutal song from this same album with an awesome drum performance. Or if you want something different listen to the instrumental "The Pentagram". It's crazy!
you right, beacuse for modern drummer he make a solo in a constest, he really can play today to. But he is now a composer off sepultura band, this song he made a pattern drums and workout with guitar player Andreas kisser and made that song. So its a diferent style works, he make a new age of sepultura band. And your contribution a composure its a incredible diferent in a metal scene, make him one of best in world.
Damn, again on wife's account, but what the hell.. What I seriously love on Eloy's "thing" is that there always seems to be those extra two or three notes somewhere making things kinda overlap / ebb and flow to another thing. Continuous mayhem. And Andrew, worry not, because here is one meshuggah fan, that totally get's what you say. Thomas is a machine and a beast. Eloy is a beast of different kind, but same(ish) magnitude. Different styles, maxium talent.

Man, I'm a 34-year-old die-hard Metal fan from Brazil and have been following Sepultura's music since I was 10. I have seen all their phases so far and I can say for sure that Eloy is their best drummer to the date, and I don't want to demean the work of Igor, Jean, and even Roy Mayorga who only played for a short time with the band. Meshugah is my favorite band of all time, I've traveled twice to São Paulo to see them (3-hour flight and very expensive plane tickets). Both bands are incredible and both drummers have put their names on the history of music, anybody can enjoy or prefer any of the bands and drummers, and it's fine. Great job on the reaction videos. I haven't checked your podcast yet but will sure do it.
Glad you took a shot at this particular video. Both Eloy and Tomas are my drummer man crushes right now. I know what you mean with your preference of Sepultura over Meshuggah, Meshuggah takes a lot of energy just to listen to and sometimes I'm just not in the right place to give that much of myself to listening to music. But when I am in the mood to listen to Meshuggah, they are incomparable.
I am a Meshuggah fan and also a Sepultura fan and I agree with you. Tomas Haake is awesome but Eloy's drumming is much more dynamic. It's not that straight machine like endless battery, Eloy's more like a dance. Still quite violent but with a lot more movement.
Eloy is a basher in the absolute best sense of the word. On top of being incredibly creative and groovy. He hits hard because he wants to, not because he has to. He adds a real punch to the sound he gets out of the instrument.
What you're saying is there's a groove that is very technical but just hard-hitting and thestounding to hear versus a very difficult, grinding technical song like bleed
I just realized that when this unstoppable drum god started playing with Sepultura only had 20 if now he´s just 32, still an amazing long career ahead... OMFG.
Did you ever get him on your podcast? I'm good friends with the band. My band toured Europe and South Africa with them back in the day. I can chat to them if you want.
Sepultura is a beautiful fit for Eloy's drumming with the way they've always hybridized metal with Brazilian/Latin rhythms. And with respect to Eloy and Tomas Haake, the interesting contrast to me is how aggressive Eloy is vs. how relaxed Tomas is, and how each approach is perfect within their group. And speaking of Meshuggah or Meshuggah-adjacent stuff, check out the video of Morgan Ågren and Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah guitarist) playing a short instrumental medley from Fredrik's solo album Sol Niger Within on Morgan's Swedish TV series if you get a chance- there aren't a whole lot of drummers in the world that could go from playing with Frank Zappa and Steve Vai to playing with Fredrik besides Morgan.
Andre Matos' manager, a former Angra singer, followed Roy Z's tip and called Eloy, inviting him to an audition. "I went with my parents, I was about 14 or 15, and I played with the band. After the audition, they gave me the ok, I was in. I went to talk to Andre and asked if

It's hard to find drummers who hit really hard yet precise these days, there are quite a few but I'm pretty sure Eloy's one of them.
