Just seeing Jonny and Waylon makes me sad to think that they are gone. George Jones once sang a song named "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes" well right there on that stage are four legends that no one will.
These guys were like the Avengers of music. Individually incredible musical legends that came together and became arguably the greatest band in history. Rest in peace, Mr. Jennings and Mr. Cash.
These four men do not get near the amount of recognition that they deserve. They really should have their own "Mount Rushmore". God bless you, Willie and Kris. And Rest In Peace, Waylon and Johnny - you left us way too soon.
All of them are well known singer songwriters. It was interesting that they did not collaborate on a new piece, but covered the Guy Clark composition. That is a great tip of the hat to him.
yeah, these guys will live forever through their music, sure i'd give a lot to be there but hell listening to it on a computer or phone is a whole lot better then nothing.
My Grandfather passed away 22 years ago now, and I still cry like a baby when I hear this song. I miss you , PawPaw. I promise to wait for the train, til it's my time to go. I love you.
To me this song is like red river valley in the sense that a redone version was better than the original. The highwaymens version of this song is better than guy clarks and Michael Martin Murphys red river valley is better than all the rest. In my opinion of course
I wonder if they knew they were the old man in this song? And now we're all the sidekick thinking of bygone days like desperados waiting for a train. On the cusp of being the old timer ourselves. Only I look around and it seems like the sidekicks could care less about the old ways and the old guys. This time it seems like we're going extinct like the last remaining buffalo. Hats off to the rest of the dinosaurs out there.
@@Jordyw1337 well he is getting old. He's a much better singer here and in almost every video I've ever heard him in than Willie and Willie seems to have gotten way more attention.
I loved the studio version of this song, but watching a live performance of the four of them is even better. I'm almost moved to tears listening to older versions of Kris, Waylon, Willie and Johnny singing about their aged mentor. The lyrics are great, but it's their voices that really make it work.
Today's country singers would turn out so much better if they just looked up to country singers like the highwaymen, instead they just go with the same friggin material. (Girls, drinking beer, partying, hunting, fishing, trucks, etc).
Chill Dude rhinestone suits and new flashy cars...I don't think Hank done it that way. I question if some of these new 'country' musicians have even listened to real country, outlaw country, and legends like these.
The day the last of the Legends we all watched as children dies will be the last of good old country music as we know it. as painful as that is, the next generation will craft their own legends. Willie, Waylon, Chris and Jonny will go down in history along with a few others. for their hard work and dedication to country music, Just as Elvis did with rock and role, and Ray did with Jazz. there will always be legends whos sound will live for ever. But each generation will craft their own new styles and follow their own choices. personally I would love to head up a tribute / cover group. I can sing like the HW-men, but Unfortunately I''m no guitar player. maybe I can just get a backing group ? I often say cover groups are never a scratch on the originals, especially legends like these guys. But soon its all we will have, Tribute acts and old MP3 copies, or we could get up to date and listen to modern music, I dont know any. I stopped listening to new stuff when the Spice girls started. "If you wanna be my" OFF SWITCH !!!! Part of the problem with the new generation of country singers is its hard to pitcher them facing the same stuff as the old ones. the wild west has tamed allot. if you take the boy named sue song, That would have been delt with in court and daddy would have been paying child care. the empty open planes are now crushed by tourists. listen to the voice over in the last cowboy song. hard to feel that much feeling and depth from some young lad or lass after they tweet about the weather and put a pitcher of their cat on facebook. their long travels of a few days by horseback are now about 3 hours in the comfort of a new car with air con. I don't mean to put these new guys down in any way. Just point out that they lead very different lives to their fathers and grandfathers. to point out that the hardships that Willie and co saw growing up will be very different to what our next gen kids are seeing. one last mention to Dan, I mean Elwood Blues. on one of the "Everybody" recordings he says that soon we will only be able to find good music in the CD collections of old libraries and we should just enjoy it while we still can. one day all these songs may fade into the darkness of the past. but while I still breath, I will still be playing them.
I was originally planning to get some nice rolling stones songs but when I hit "the" in the search and "the Highwaymen" appeared from a previous search I decided to change my plans
Vi capita mai che la nostalgia Vi assale e, la dolce calda mano della malinconia, vi accarezza dolcemente le spalle, e un brivido corre per tutta la pelle???? Certi giorni non torneranno mai, mai!!!
True but there music will never die, there’s a line “too me he’s 1 of the heroes of my country “ to me it’s about my dad he flew hc3 chopper for a year in Vietnam and came home like he’d been at boyscout camp, what a man , what a influence on my life
WOW! This is special! I'm so glad I found it. These 4 guys have given us hundreds of years of great music. It's so sad that we no longer have the entire group with us. Kris & Willie, carry on this legend.
+LaQuita Haynes I still remember the review of this album in Playboy when it came out, it contained the greatest line from an album review ever: "if Mount Rushmore could sing, this is what it would sound like."
There was this old man who I used to help on his ranch. He was a teacher for 36 years and did labor in the summers. He was even an actor. I started working with him after my brother committed suicide. I would go over every day and help him with whatever he needed. If he to go somewhere, he took me with him. We went through many of the southern states buying and selling horses and cows. Our lives were like some old western movie. Over the years we became best friends. He was always there to listen and give advice for all my problems. I looked up to him. He passed away in July of this year of leukemia. I got to see him for the last time the day before he died. He was 73. Everytime I hear this song I think of my best friend.
I always knew of them. Now at 35, I'm appreciating it. I'm sorry it took me this long. If nothing else, I'm now a kristofferson fan...it will all live on. It's too good not to be appreciated by anyone who loves well written music with legendary voices.

Miss those times. 😢
The same people who have listened and enjoyed the music... try putting that question on an Elvis song
I love country music. The highwaymen are in a class of their own. The harmony between willie johnny waylon and chris is untouchable.😊
Guy Clark has to be one of the best songwriters of all time.
Is the best
Can you imagine a song writing session with the likes of Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and Billy Joe Shaver. Wow what crazy fun that must have been
Heard they called Guy the 5th highwayman
Waylon's voice is incomparable! Just magnificent.
Seeing those guys on stage is like looking at a country Mt.Rushmore!
Good one.
Someone should actually go make Mt. Countrymore with these four adorning it.
One of the truest and well said things ever on UA-cam. Or anywhere else! Well done!🎸
