Dil Se had the most amazing climax ever... still remember the collective gasp in the theater when srk and Manisha hug in the end...the anticipation of the bomb exploding was unnerving...and when it did..there was pin drop silence with Sonu Nigam's soul piercing rendition of " Mujhe maut ki god mein sone de"... Wish that was discussed too..
They mentioned 4 films of its kind Roja, 1942 a love story, Bombay and Dil se And 3 of 4 features Manisha Koirala ❤️ such an amazing actress she is ...
How didn’t the reviewer not like this! It was such a visual delight in those days. Dil Se is probably the best from SRK. It was a lot toned down performance and his chemistry with Manisha is just wow
Movie is distorted and total mess. Full marks for courage still he was reluctant to show the moina background earlier in the movie. Justice not given, srk hamming all over the place
A case of noticable firsts -- the first Bollywood venture of Mani Ratnam, Lataji singing for the first time for A.R. Rahman. The music of Dil Se eventually grew larger than the film itself. While Rahman's earlier hits like Roja, Bombay, and Rangeela helped to establish his unconventional, vibrant, and sparse melodic sound in Indian music, Dil Se stamped the seal on Rahman's ability to create marvelous music continuously. It eventually won 1999 Filmfare Awards for Best Music Director (A.R. Rahman), Best Lyricist (Gulzaar), and Best Male Playback Singer (Sukhwinder Singh). The song "Chaiyya Chaiyya" was voted among the Top Ten most famous songs of all time by the BBC World Service in 2003.
Disagree. The music was ok but Lata ruined Jiya Jale with her banshee-like, old lady screeching. Its not even listenable. Especially when its picturized on someone as youthful looking as Preity Zinta
I am from Silchar, Assam (the second largest city of Assam) and I recently saw this movie again last month and now since I am grown up I realised that in this movie the "Barak Valley" express that Shah Rukh waits for was the only train that used to connect the southern part of Assam (specifically Silchar) to Guwahati (a distance of nearly 390km but it used to take almost 14-16hrs atleast to cover that Journey and then we have to change train from Lumding; from where the gauge is broad gauge; to reach Guwahati) and the to rest of India and this was the condition until 2014 when broadgauge reached till other parts of Southern Assam . I still think of how much we are deprived from mailnland India till today. Thanks to the director to put up this story at that time.
Technically Dil se was such a suprerior movie to kuch kuch hota hain.. and what performances!! It’s a timeless masterpiece that has to be cherished.. SRK never looked better in any other movie, his chemistry is koirala understated and yet piercing through your heart. Manisha was the heart of Dil se ❤️.. vulnerability, pain so beautifully depicted not with dialogues through her face and eyes..never has a performance affected me so much
Yes, SRK looked amazing in Dil Se. His face, oh my God! Charm and good looks oozing out of every frame. I wish he and Manisha Koirala had done more films together ❤
KKHH is so overrated. I hated it at the time even though I was the target demographic (teenager and “NRI”). The fact that people STILL like that film is unbelievable. When even the film’s director can point out plot holes and ridiculous plot points in his own film it’s very telling. Dil Se was the best Hindi film released that year by far. Superior music, story, cinematography, direction etc.
Manisha wasn’t given an award for dil se or khamoshi .. Kajol and Karishma’s gyrating and over the top performances was applauded. Today Alia gets an award for sneezing
I don't know why it is my favorite film. The background music haunted me for years after my first watch. Manisha my God ❤️ She played her part so so good that each time she appears on screen it's literally like I'm watching a living dead person bcz that character's soul left her body in childhood itself. Pretty was also really really good given that she was very young n it was her debut year Srk also did his part really well. His confusion eagerness n helplessness to understand Manisha's character is played out by him really good Choreography of chaiya chaiya n Satrangi re (7 stages of love described in it) are breathtaking❤ Cinematography is just top notch N last one reason maybe is Mani Ratnam Yaar! That guy's success feels like personal don't know why ❤
Same thoughts.. even after 25 years no other movie has affected me as much .. each movie scene is gold !! May be because I watched the movie on its first day and did not read reviews and it was a wild ride and I was completely taken aback by its ending
Watching Dil Se right now on Netflix after seeing this review!!! I was only 26 at that time and now at 51 I’m understanding it way better!!! What a class movie!!! Thank you to both of you for reintroducing this movie to us. Your review has made us watch this movie once again with a completely different and new perspective!!
Did we watch the same movie? The Movie wasn’t “disturbing” or confusing by any means . It’s a masterpiece, I loved it when I saw it for the first time years ago when I was still in school and I still love it . One of the best movie ever made .
Exactly . One of the best movies . I loved it when I watched it . Trust, this rahul shouldn’t deal with films . He has so many preconceived notions that puts many of us off from his discussions
Don't listen to these two phudoz and dumb. The guy in this video is born mental case but blaming Dil se for it. Dil Se is too classic for these,C class movie reviewers to understand.
Each and every shot of 'Dil Se' is still fresh in my mind. I was in class 8th and watched it in single screen cinema-hall. Every shot of movie is a lesson of film-making and technical expertise. Right from very first shot where a torn red cloth is fluttering among barbed wires, and then we see a single light coming behind the wires. I was thinking a motorcycle was coming but slowly the single spot was bifurcated into two then i realised a four wheeler was coming. Then the entry of Shahrukh was completely unexpected. It was not in a helicopter, not with black sunglasses but his first dialouge was "...aapki gaadi mein bomb to nhin hai?".....and driver wryly replied "...bomb to aage milega, haflong mein...". It was not a hero's entry, not a larger-than-the-life entry. It was simple entry, yet it was his best entry so far which we all can connect to. After so many years, i saw such entry of Shahid kapoor in 'Haidar'. Picturisation of Title track was stunning. In a shot you see a basketball court, it next shot you see a swing passes through flames, in next shot you see boots of marching soldiers. To me the best shot was a slow-motion sequence where Shahrukh fingurs are tucked among Manisha's bangles, and with a wry smile She lifts her hand. Then the facial expression of both the actors, their eyes, flying pieces of bangles and Rahman's score......it is out of the world even now. Almost every month, i see that movie in my laptop and i never feel disappointed and i did not feel disappointed even when i watched it first time when i was in 8th std. I feel that all the students of films and TV institues across the globe should be told that just close all your books and notes, and just watch 'Dil Se' as many times as possible. You will be a terrific film-maker and excellent actor.
@@KrishanKumar-ec1ch Creativity and Art work is subjective in nature.....so may be You are correct. But to me, in mainstream hindi cinema I am still waiting a movie like "Dil Se".
Killer soundtrack, Killer BGM, Spectacular cinematography, gripping story. Too advanced for its time. Critics were not mature enough to understand the theme
I wonder if Indians at the time were a bit more sheltered from the outside world and confined to their own bubbles to not understand the film. I was a British born pre teen at the time. I got the film and loved it so much that it became one of my favourite films across any language - to the extent that I did a project on the film at my school for my media studies class. It’s my best friend’s favourite film too (and she’s white). Sad that it didn’t get its due in india, but in the UK it was the first Indian film to break into the UK box office top ten and actually helped Indian films get a large audience abroad.
I saw it in NYC several times. It was my favourite movie then (INSTANTLY) and today it still is. LOVED THE UNEXPECTED ENDING. ONE OF MY TOP 10. This was def ahead of its time. I LOVED that it was abstract. It was not for for the typical Indian senses. It's heartbreaking that these types of movies gets lost on Bollywood. And yes, SRK was creepy but reflective of Indian men. The soundtrack is one of the best even today and the cinematography is stunning. The locations too are unusually beautiful. So much symbolism. It's one of Manisha and SRK's best work.
The movie is a cult classic. At release liked it instantly when i first watched it as a teenager. Still cherish the movie. Wonder how people in India didnt connect with the movie when as a Sri Lankan even i was able to connect.
I loved this film. One of the greatest of SRK. each song is a story itself. Still can't understand why people didn't like it. For me its a film that deserves better appreciation.
Yes....Dil Se songs never feel like they are too long - the music and visuals are exquisite I feel. Perfect blend of pop-abstract and indian filmy song, all within the story.
Thank you for revisiting Dil se, a movie ahead of its time. It was the first movie to be enlisted at the UK top 10 movies that year. Although you touched upon her beauty, it would have been great if you talked about Manisha’s fantastic acting too.
This movie is just magnificent. It was way ahead of its times. Dil Se is still relevant more than ever. Another movie I would like you to revisit is Ek Hasina Thi.
You made my day today. Some of the observations Rahul shared were new to me. I love his insights. Everytime I watch the movie, I learn something new. Mani Ratnam is a genius. I wish you discussed Manisha's performance in detail apart from how beautiful she looked. I saw Dil Se at the age 14-15 in Pakistan on VHS and I was mesmerized by it. I instantly fell in love with it. Manisha's performance played a HUGE role in that. Therefore, I was surprised that Rahul and Anupama didnt like it. Maybe it was too close to home for them. Since then, I have watched Dil Se at least 100 times and this love continues. Again, I REALLY hope Dil se's team can have reunion sort of thing where they come and talk about their experience but I have seen Mani sir and Ar Rahman's interviews recently, they rarely talk about their work in detail and they make it sound like easy, which it isnt, especially Dil Se. uff I can go on and on. Its a 25 year long relationship ❤
I remember watching Dil Se when it released and absolutely being blown away! It was so different from SRKs typical chocolate boy films. Back then I thought films like KKHH and DDLJ were fluff and wanted see SRK in something more hard hitting. Dil Se was just that for me! The film was haunting and stayed with me. I loved SRKs character. You were right to point out his character was a mix of Raj from DDLJ and his character from Darr. I think ppl were just too use to seeing SRK in light romantic films that it was hard to see him in such a different film with a darker subject. Dil Se has to be my favourite SRK film till date! Im a huge ARR and Gulzar saab fan as well…the music is iconic. Hands down the best soundtrack of all time!
Lol, "blown away"... Sorry, couldn't resist... Also, funny you say that people were so used to SRK in "light romantic films," considering the beginning of his career was mostly dark films: Deewana, Baazigar, Darr, Anjaam. (Although Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naan was sandwiched between Darr and Anjaam 😄)
@@samhayet4286 you know what I mean…I’m referring to the time he switched over to romantic films and his iconic Rahul and Raj roles. But you’re right he has played the similar obsessive type characters in his light romantic films like Deewana and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na. Did you not like Dil Se?
Okay, So "Dil Se" is one of all time favourites, right... It’s a brilliant film with arguably the best BGM in a hindi language film. I love the filmmaker's courage, the amalgamation of a love story with the geopolitical background of northeast India - Just brilliant! I loved Manisha so much, Pretty with a Super debut performance but above all it's Shahrukh's character that holds it for me. I feel it's his love for Manisha that's the x-factor of the film. I revisited the film countless times, still enjoy it as much..
Mani Ratnam's films have a lot of subtext and probably he is the only mainstream filmmaker (may be) who has that kind of subtext, allegories and subtleties (not "in the face" kind), mixed with great cinematography, music/lyrics and performances. To many, he is overrated but I beg to differ. I really think there is a lot of aftertaste in his movies, that makes him underrated.
This film was made at the same time as "Duplicate" & "Kuch Kuch". . . This film is no comparison to those two. This is FAR superior. The writing, the direction, the acting, the music & the beautiful photography.
Anupama, Rahul - Can you guys do an episode where you talk about the unconventional roles Manisha Koirala did in the 90s and early 2000s? Can you educate us what kind of person on-screen and off-screen she was? As 90s kids we didn't see back then but we keep reading about what a big star she was and we have come to adore and regard highly of her films but the way she is put up now with actresses from 90s just doesn't add up. I think Manisha Koirala deserves lot more for the movies she chose, people she worked with and alternate mainstream cinema she inspired into existence which very well might have been the reason for her tumultuous downfall! Or even better, perhaps an interview like Front Row with Manisha to help us and film students understand how easy or difficult it was to make the choices she did and survive those.
It was regularly mentioned in the press at the time that she was less than professional and an alcoholic. Don't know if real or made up. She appears to have had an uncanny ability to star in flops, this one, 1942, Khamoshi which also likely did not do much for her career, unlike actresses who pulled the audience into the theaters like Madhuri, Sri, at the time.
@@pinakbhende5058 I find it weird! Having heard all of that, she went on to work with biggest directors in the films we have come to love (hit or flop), she was doing some calculations, something right! With dure respect, other films of lead actresses were just regular masala films!
If you see Indian Cinema’s history- as per me Mani Ratnam is the only true PAN-India filmmaker, even from the beginning itself. He is the only who has worked with actors all across the country. Even today if you see so called PAN India movies from South Industries are based majorly based on South India’s stories only (nothing against those movies). Where Mani Ratnam has always chosen the stories from different parts of India. For me he is the only PAN-Indian filmmaker. #Filmycompaniyon
Please do a retake of Khamoshi. That movie is too far ahead of its time and far superior. Also an interview with Manisha Koirala please. She is the most courageous and beautiful actress!
Ive been requesting it for some time now. I feel Rahul should be there too. It seems like his childhood was influenced by Manisha's performances too :)
Finally finally Rahul and Anupama take is back... Dont know and cant say for others this movie is included in my srk best work... And one more thing how many times i have requested you guys to do a retake of it, now i am much happier and thanks alot fc...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Kabhi haan kabhi naa Dil se Swades.
I remember bunking college and watching the movie 1st day 1st show and being absolutely blown away by chaiyya chaiyya...had never seen such magic in Indian cinema until then...it was mesmerizing
Being a SRK fanboy in my teenage, watched the movie and was haunted by the music. Today when am an adult, I understand the layers of the movie and it's equally charming and haunting- be the scenes at Ladakh or the scenes of Old Delhi- the helplesness of the charecters- Way ahead of it's time
Thank you so much for reviewing this amazing film. Dil Se has been one my favorite movie and back when it was released, I feel it never got it’s due or recognition that it deserved. Like you mentioned in your review, this was made way before it’s time but it was relevant even then. May be I connected more because I’m from north east, but having said that, this movie itself is a masterpiece from Mani Ratnam being his first Hindi feature film that he made. Not to forget, what makes it more fascinating and worth watching is the performances from Shah Rukh, Manisha ( my favorite) and cute Priety. My favorite being the scenes between Manisha and Shah Rukh shot in Ladakh which so is amazing and watching them you feel how amazing these two actors are. The music from AR Rehman in this film are iconic and like u mentioned each song in itself are masterpieces and beautifully created. Must watch for those who love Mani Ratnam’s work and for those who are ardent fans of Manisha and Shah Rukh.
My discovery of Dil Se is in itself a surreal story... I did not have TV (or computer) at home. I was probably 11-12 years old then. I only had a radio (AM- not even FM)! I happened to hear E Ajnabi in Vividhbharti (I know!!).. The audio was not great.. I was not able to make out the lyrics.. but the music was so haunting! I had a plain cassette in the recorder- and I immediately pressed the record button. The partial song got recorded with all the AM noises. I kept listening to the song in a loop. I was trying to sing it and find out which movie it was from. I was in Tamil Nadu- so when I was singing (badly) this Hindi song, hardly anyone understood.. after some 3-4 months of trying, I was finally hearing this song once again, in a train station (I know!!! ) in a tea stall.. I ran to the stall and kept listening to the song (ignoring the shopkeeper asking me what I needed multiple times) and they announced the movie's name as "Dil Se".. I bought the cassette. I didn't know the story of the movie. but based on the songs, I had my own story in my mind- coz the songs/ lyrics are so unique! I reckon I saw it on TV for the first time, many years later.. the story was nothing like what I had imagined.. but the biggest shock was- how the Ae Ajnabi song was picturized! The story of the movie never stayed in my mind for some reason.. but Ae Ajnabi- still now is my favorite song ever...
To add to Roja Bombay Dil se..... 2002 Kannathil Muthamittal (only in Tamil )......till date it's extremely heart wrenching to watch the climax ( based on refugees of Sri Lankan Tamils LTTE Indian govt ). Another movie not much is spoken is Anjali ( kids and an dying Toddler)
Its been 25 years and enen now i can comfortably say its the best indian film i have ever seen. This film was the only reason why i startes watxhing bollywood films. Absolutely amazing fim.i must have seen it about a 100 times
my very first memory of Shahrukh Khan was when I was around 3 or 4 years old, and saw him in the title song of Dil Se. I was so fascinated by him that I used to believe he was actually inside the TV and tried to sneak into it through the speaker's grill. 😅 Dil Se is a unique movie.
Dil Se in the same breath of KKHH and Soldier 😊..speaks to audience sensibilities or lackof thereif; not the masterclass Dil Se was and is. The movie was layered and required thought, not being spoon fed as is in most hindi movies. One of my all time favorites
I was in school when I watched Dil Se for the first time on television. Though I didn't fully comprehend it, it was the climax that took me in and left me in awe. After that I have watched the movie several times over the years. It is a masterpiece; it is one of SRKs bravest and most intense performances. Im so glad he did the movie. Everyone in the cast is amazing. Every time you watch the movie it reveals something new to you. Satrangi Re is pure genius. The music is still my go to, ARR seems God. I could go on and on. One can never have enough of Dil Se.
Masterpiece, this is the movie i can watch every time it plays. You need to mature enough to understand this movie. This movie was ahead of its time for Indians.
Dil se is the greatest movie ever made in the history of world cinema. Best climax ever. Best work ever of SRK, Manisha, AR Rahman, Mani Ratnam, Gulzar and Santosh Sivan.
Please do a retake of Anjaam! A film that is so ahead of its time, features the first of what would be quite a few SRK-Madhuri classics, and makes for a stellar thriller. I watched with my mother a few years ago and just couldn’t get over what I saw. I was surprised that nobody ever talks about the film when it’s one of SRKs and Madhuri’s best works. Instantly went into my top 5 SRK films for the role and story he took on.
Omg yes!! That film was like so many OTT shows now in the sheer grit and gruesomeness they showed (and in the killing off of key characters unexpectedly). It was so audacious for its time and I have no idea why no one acknowledges it. I’m British born and raised and although cinemas back then rarely showed Hindi films, nearly every British Indian kid I knew at that time had seen the film. My husband had only watched 3 Hindi films when he met me, and this was one of them (the others were sholay and koyla). Don’t know how it fared in india but we loved the film - irrespective of the fact that we probably shouldn’t have watched such a violent film as young children.
It was an amazing movie ❤ They showed his shaadi ka ghar to compare his life and Manisha's character's life... Her struggle is so diff, she has to lie about being married n all... And he is living this normal life... Thats the difference between people living in two diff parts of India...
I was like 7-year-old, a civilian's son in Tezpur (the Air force station which supports the entire north east), Assam seeing Roja in the theater was kind of surreal and militancy was at its peak in Assam. And I could sense how we were treated outsiders (from mainland India). I happened to see Dil Se, when we moved in Chennai. North East is beautiful and everyone should visit if they have not, yet! So, even though I was small; I had some idea and used to hear both sides as I studied in a school in Air Force Station since, there were no schools in Tezpur where you can study without learning Assamese! I was disheartened that the film didn't do well as I used to be a big Shahrukh fan then and "Ae Ajnabi" was my favorite song from the movie then and still it's one of my favorite Hindi songs ever!
#FCRETAKE I'd love if you rewatched and talked about Paheli. I thought it was an absolute delight. Not a lot of Indian folktales being produced the way this one was. The cast, production, music, lyrics, was phenomenal. so magical. WOuld love your input on it after the initial pushback then. So beautiful, Paheli was!
Shah Rukh Khan's character is much more pathological than manisha's. This film is one of those character studies that pose as a romantic thriller but are not. There are darker tales of existentialism and mortality simmering in the background which explode at the end of the movie. This movie is the only one I can clearly remember at this point, which uses the bollywood template of dance and music not to forward the story, but to build that underlying angst that is too intense to be put directly into the narrative. What the songs and the dance sequences do for the movie is that they save the climax from being absolutely absurd. It is at that level this movie is a masterpiece.
I remember the film was offered to kajol she thought that shahrukh and mani ratnam were doing a prank she didn’t pick up the film came to manisha koirala with her dazzling beauty making it a must watch and that hug scene was commendable #Dilse 1:28
mani at that time was actually wanting to make alai payuthey/saathiya in hindi with srk and kajol (it was his vision of what a marriage between raj and simran from DDLJ would be like apparently). when that didn't work out with kajol due to her dates being booked for kuch kuch hota hai, he made dil se instead with manisha. he made alai payuthey in tamil instead. there's no way he would've cast kajol for the role of a north eastern girl. he's said this himself in "conversations with mani ratnam" by bharadwaj rangan.
I remember my husband and me buying the audio cassette on its release in anticipation of Rahman's compositions and waiting with high hopes for the film's release. We loved so many aspects of it and yet there wasn't a sense of fulfillment at the end as in the case of Mauna Ragam , Roja or Bombay. We haven't revisited Dil Se but I remember my husband mentioning that the flashback wasn't convincing enough. Can't recall it now.
My favorite SRK movie, way ahead of it's times, all the folks involved are geniuses in their own right. Had this been a Hollywood film it would have had a different life altogether, sad that such genius work doesn't work in India.
We disagree with the two critics. DIL SE was pure magic. The movie, the songs, the acting - they made this movie a masterpiece. The Hollywood Insider awarded Mani Ratnam the MASTERS OF CINEMA award for DIL SE. Here is the UA-cam link - m.ua-cam.com/video/ygyxcLFGEDI/v-deo.html
Right from name of the movie, to characters, dailouges, lyrics, music and script..... each one of these is class and mystery in itself, much much ahead of time. Even today many will not be able to catch that deeper meanings each frame depicts. It will be very wrong or for that matter a sin to judge one of the finest creation without understanding the exact pov of the creator/team. Get HIM and understand HIS and then pass any comments. However we are lucky to get another marvel in cinematic world from same creator after 25 YEARS OF DIL SE...... PS II. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👑
This movie traumatized me too, as a 13 yr old girl i saw this in Cinema hall, after that i did not rewatch the whole movie again on tv ever, i just looked at the songs and moved on from it. only a couple of years back i read about the allegory/ hidden meaning behind it, so i rewatched it and then everything made sense, the disturbance mani rathnam made us feel made sense, the rewatch after understanding the hidden meaning actually put an end to that trauma i got watching it at 13 😅 . Once i passed that stage i loved the movie so much i rewatched it again 3 times (i still look away at manisha's childhood flashback, i can never rewatch that because it is very sad) . The world wasn't ready for this movie then, the world is still not ready . Because i have seen people going to both extremes after watching this, one side is loving SRK's character, like "what a manly macho man", "oh he didn't hear 'i love you' from her till the end" "srk & priti should have ended up together " the other side is extremely offended "this is abuse, this is stalking, sorry its not romantic" (i felt the same back then) both sides did not se the underlying meaning. That itself reflects the world we are in today, again that itself is what they are trying to show in the moive, nobody is ready to listen to HER suffering, al they se is the beauty which is on surface & are infatuated by it, or they se the abusive stalker and are traumatized then shut down. They either want him to get her or they want to save her. That's exactly what srk wanted too😅 (HER : means north east, for example manipur) when will we understand HER? Every line in the movie gave a different meaning, every shot has a different meaning. The allegory is endless once you get it like Rahul said. I am finally at peace with the movie i hope more and more people begin to understand it.
Huge request! I loved when Rockstar was discussed with Imtiaz ali and would love if some future retakes could be done with the the filmmaker/writer. Obviously only if possible! Love your discussions!
Amazing reliving this movie which impacted many of us in our growing years in the 90s.i remember I was in 10th or 11th and went to see the movie alone in the theater in oman and was mesmerized with the shots music and srk. Priety Zinta was refreshing in her debut. It surely was ahead of the time. We forgot to discuss how beautifully dil se re was choreographed. It was just amazing back then.. Thank you for doing this. Loved the episode.. Amybe it would be great to. Look back at kabhi Haan Kabhi na which was a beautiful 90s movie and maybe khakee by rajkumar Santoshi which will be fun to revisit. 😊 👍 Good. Luck team.
This was the 6th Indian movie I saw. I found it captivating. It took me a little bit to "digest" it, but after a few months I rewatched it and it truly became one of my all time fav movies.
I was 10 (millenial) when this film came out.. i was on a coach journey with my mom at the time to visit family in the other side of the UK, i mostly remember the song at that time, but as a teenager i watched it a few more times on the vhs with my sister and aunt and we class it as a semi bittersweet love story if you can call it that... Music was next level, srk/manisha chemistry... they should have done more work after this together.. (i guess they would have had the film been " a box office hit" )
My take on Dil Se is the ugly side of terrorism got completely over shadowed by AR's great music and the stunning picturization of the songs. Never took the story seriously but have watched the songs countless times
101% right.
That scene sent me in trance for 15 minutes.
Yep, this ending. When the movie was shown on DD1, they had removed the blast at the end. SRK hugs Manisha and the movie ends. 😡
I was maybe 9, I didn’t think dil se was bad at all even then, even now, Infact I love the visual metaphors and nuances in every scene
Sonu's lyrics and more than that the haunting opera like singing of kavita krishnamurthi
They mentioned 4 films of its kind
Roja, 1942 a love story, Bombay and Dil se
And 3 of 4 features Manisha Koirala ❤️ such an amazing actress she is ...
exactly my thought :)
Ae Ajnabi alone is worth the ticket price, fantastic movie and GOAT soundtrack
Amazing❤
Gulzar Saab wrote the heavens out of that song ...pure masterclass
How didn’t the reviewer not like this! It was such a visual delight in those days. Dil Se is probably the best from SRK. It was a lot toned down performance and his chemistry with Manisha is just wow
These two are too dumb to discuss one of the all time best movie of bollywood and srk. Dil Se is on the different level.
Movie is distorted and total mess. Full marks for courage still he was reluctant to show the moina background earlier in the movie. Justice not given, srk hamming all over the place
There's a great concept in philosophy called, not everyone likes or dislikes the same thing.
A case of noticable firsts -- the first Bollywood venture of Mani Ratnam, Lataji singing for the first time for A.R. Rahman. The music of Dil Se eventually grew larger than the film itself.
Preity Zinta's first movie ❤️
@Rajat Tyagi as a lead actress
@Rajat Tyagi I know but Dil Se was her debut movie as an actress because in that Manisha Koirala was the leading actress
@Rajat Tyagi and after that she made her debut as a leading actress in Soldier because Dil Se was released before soldier
Disagree. The music was ok but Lata ruined Jiya Jale with her banshee-like, old lady screeching. Its not even listenable. Especially when its picturized on someone as youthful looking as Preity Zinta

I still think of how much we are deprived from mailnland India till today. Thanks to the director to put up this story at that time.
Yeah, he was and is way ahead of his time. I remember Shahrukh mentioning in interviews that the film is 20 years ahead of its time.
And everyone should remember the Tarapur Railway Station killing in '61. It took 50years for the Broad Guage to come since that day.
😳
Dil Se is such a symbolic movie in so many levels. The audacious commentary this movie makes is just impossibile even today.
You're spot on
KKHH is so overrated.
@@shrutisharma4586kuch kuch hota hai is a most stupid film i ever seen
Manisha wasn’t given an award for dil se or khamoshi .. Kajol and Karishma’s gyrating and over the top performances was applauded. Today Alia gets an award for sneezing
I don't know why it is my favorite film. The background music haunted me for years after my first watch. Manisha my God ❤️ She played her part so so good that each time she appears on screen it's literally like I'm watching a living dead person bcz that character's soul left her body in childhood itself.
Pretty was also really really good given that she was very young n it was her debut year
Srk also did his part really well. His confusion eagerness n helplessness to understand Manisha's character is played out by him really good
Choreography of chaiya chaiya n Satrangi re (7 stages of love described in it) are breathtaking❤
Cinematography is just top notch
N last one reason maybe is Mani Ratnam
Yaar! That guy's success feels like personal don't know why ❤
Same thoughts.. even after 25 years no other movie has affected me as much .. each movie scene is gold !! May be because I watched the movie on its first day and did not read reviews and it was a wild ride and I was completely taken aback by its ending
Sitaaron se aagey jahaan aur bhi haunts me till date🥶
Watching Dil Se right now on Netflix after seeing this review!!! I was only 26 at that time and now at 51 I’m understanding it way better!!! What a class movie!!! Thank you to both of you for reintroducing this movie to us. Your review has made us watch this movie once again with a completely different and new perspective!!
I watched Dil Se first day first show !!!!! And i was speechless at the climax
Did we watch the same movie? The Movie wasn’t “disturbing” or confusing by any means . It’s a masterpiece, I loved it when I saw it for the first time years ago when I was still in school and I still love it . One of the best movie ever made .
These people would go gaga over cringy kuch kuch hota hai
@@abhilashkakarlaWho's is this guy Rahul . Seems to me a mental case who needs psychiatrist instead of reviewing classic movie like Dil Se
You're absolutely right. Dil Se is srk best movie and one of the all the time best movie of bollywood
❤❤❤
Only dumb people will not like classic Dil Se . It's simply best movie of srk
I liked it & appreciated it even back then.,...it was a masterpiece. And no Satrangi Re was not a shock to me but pleasantly captivated me back then.
Next Revisit Suggestion:
Rang de Basanti...
Dil Se is masterpiece. These people don't understand.
:)
Exactly 🤷♀️
My hot takes:
- It’s aged weirdly.
- The soundtrack was iconic. Thank you, AR Rahman
- Manisha Koirala deserves the world with best written parts.
How are these opinions 'hot takes' these are the most common opinion one can have on Dil Se
@@sharma12566The definition of hot takes still holds.
With dure respect, other films of lead actresses were just regular masala films!
they did not even talk about manisha here
Very good message. I hope this message reaches the fc team and they do consider doing it.
@@loveamazingstuff12 they ignored Manisha, she was the heart and soul of dil se
We want a Manisha Koirala interview with Anupama
Ive been requesting it for some time now. I feel Rahul should be there too. It seems like his childhood was influenced by Manisha's performances too :)
Finally finally Rahul and Anupama take is back...
Dont know and cant say for others this movie is included in my srk best work...
And one more thing how many times i have requested you guys to do a retake of it, now i am much happier and thanks alot fc...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Kabhi haan kabhi naa
Dil se
Swades.
I remember when Dil Se was shown on DD1, they had changed the climax of the movie. SRK hugs Manisha and immediately credit rolls. I was flabbergasted.
Mani Ratnam’s absolute classic way ahead of its time 💯⚡️
I was 8 when Dil Se released, I was profoundly moved by it then and I am profoundly moved by it even now....
Its been 25 years and enen now i can comfortably say its the best indian film i have ever seen. This film was the only reason why i startes watxhing bollywood films. Absolutely amazing fim.i must have seen it about a 100 times
I swear to God but this is the only movie that I watch every month and the only SRK movie (with Swades) that I’ve adored. ARRs best work in Hindi.
my very first memory of Shahrukh Khan was when I was around 3 or 4 years old, and saw him in the title song of Dil Se. I was so fascinated by him that I used to believe he was actually inside the TV and tried to sneak into it through the speaker's grill. 😅
Dil Se is a unique movie.
Dil se is my favourite movie....always was and always will
Mine too
Manitathnam introduced a new cinema style with reality, music, cinema photography, to bollywood through Dil se. This is sharukh s best acting ever.
What amazes me is how far ahead of its time the movie is. And still relatable.
Dil Se in the same breath of KKHH and Soldier 😊..speaks to audience sensibilities or lackof thereif; not the masterclass Dil Se was and is. The movie was layered and required thought, not being spoon fed as is in most hindi movies. One of my all time favorites
The only things they have in common is the release year and the bomb ass soundtracks. 😂
South Indian filmmakers always changed bollywood.
Masterpiece, this is the movie i can watch every time it plays. You need to mature enough to understand this movie. This movie was ahead of its time for Indians.
Shoutout to Farah Khan and Santosh Sivan for some brilliant frames they’ve given us.
Thank you for taking about Dil de…
Train station scene alone deserve an award…
This film is a masterpiece ❤
I was 16 when the film and music releaaed. I have been obsessed with it ever since. Music is the GREATEST album ever in human history. Period !!
Noone will ever make a movie like Dilse...its a masterpiece...
How can you guys forget BGM of this film.. the background score is top notch ❤
Omg Rahul Desai . Man you are such a brilliant critic! Superb
Same, it's really well made. I too wonder why nobody talks about this. It's way better than Darr. Please review Anjaam. It really gave me chills.
What a movise .. it's even better made than most of recent movie
I vivdly remember a breathtaking long shot of Manisha Koirala on a bridge in the song ' Satrangi re'.
Ar rahman is the biggest star of dil se.
Dil was a master piece... and SRK was superb in that 👌
These type of episodes should be consistent.. atleast once a month
Please make an analysis on kannathil muthamittal I feel screenplay of this movie is so great it hooked audience while watching
100%
Another future star is Tigmanshu Dhulia in a literally blink and miss role 😊
My favorite SRK movie, way ahead of it's times, all the folks involved are geniuses in their own right. Had this been a Hollywood film it would have had a different life altogether, sad that such genius work doesn't work in India.
Dil se was a feast that you thoroughly devour and yet feel really disturbed by eating. It just grows with excellence.
PS II.

Rahul finding issue with people using the word 'problematic' is the height of irony.
Anupama and Rahul would love to see you do a FC retake for Lakshya, a cult classic
I am finally at peace with the movie i hope more and more people begin to understand it.
dil se.. one of the most sensational acting by SRK and Manisha
This one Rahul spoke so well so right
Huge request!
😊 👍 Good. Luck team.
Such an enriching session. Rahul, your insights are mouthwateringly genius.
This was the 6th Indian movie I saw. I found it captivating. It took me a little bit to "digest" it, but after a few months I rewatched it and it truly became one of my all time fav movies.
Well its an absolute gem of a movie (hearing you both made me realise that I should listen to better critics)
You guys didn't talk about background score .. it's one of the best BGM of all time
Dil se one of the first films I heard people snoring around me half in d film
If this movie were made today then it would have been hit for sure
Credit to Farah Khan for Chaiyya Chaiyya. My God what a song!
Please do the next one on Zubeidaa or Fiza.
Lakshya!! Please do one on it! One of the under rated movies
I loved it back then and even now , got loads of bashing for watching the movie back then when I was hardly 15
Such a great point about songs being like smoke screen to the actual story of the movie 👍
LOVE is all there is ..
“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose/ By any other name would smell as sweet.”
My take on Dil Se is the ugly side of terrorism got completely over shadowed by AR's great music and the stunning picturization of the songs. Never took the story seriously but have watched the songs countless times
For me its the best film of Shah Rukh & Manisha... so close to my heart...
This movie was spectacular even when it came out. It might even have been my favorite in the terrorist trilogy. Manisha was unmatched.
Dilse s one of my most favorites, and am so glad tat it got picked by FC ❤
somebody today can still make a movie like dil se.
