Our family had a 68VW Beatle and my mother drover it, foot to the floor all the time 72mph. She said they designed them to be driven that way, after all she was a professional engineer!
I just rented one out in mexico for a day, it was slow but I managed to hit 75 mph, it was still slowly climbing but I had to let off because of bumps up ahead. It had 275,000 miles on it, smelled very rich, sticky throttle, no seat belts, 4 speed, great fun. I am unsure of the year it was, but they made them in mexico until 2004 I think, and as far as I can tell there was nothing done to make them perform differently. A catalytic converter was probably the biggest change.
I used to see how fast my '76 could go when I was in high school as a dumb 16 year old kid. I would drive along this country road that had a hill and it got up to 85 or so when it reached the bottom. Looking back I was SOOOO stupid and its amazing I wasn't killed!
Nice to see the Beetle out on the road once again! Haha, you guys must have had a wild time on your birthday eh? I do 70-80 MPH in my LTD whenever I'm on the highway... of course, that's not very impressive, since the speed limit is 110 Km/H... which is about 70 MPH lol
coolbluelights Do you think it's worth buying a beetle these days? I've seen them in good condition for 700 dollars in my country, it's seems like a classic to me, and it's very good looking, i'm just looking for something reliable, that sustains heat, has a proper hair conditioner (the 80's model has) and that it will not eat gallons of gasoline, what can you tell me?
Ok it's been a year since I've owned the car and I have to say it's the best car I've ever owned. It's super simple and it starts every time I get about 25-30mpg. If you're going to daily it just upgraded the front brakes to disc, it's not expensive or hard to do and it makes the car stop soooo much better in stop and go traffic. The trunk space isn't bad I've filled it up a cupel of times with no problems but I also add a roof rack for more space. The biggest problem I faced with my bug is carb icing at 32°F (0°C) but this was fixed by using the stock muffler and giving the car a longer warmup time. Bugs also need valve adjustments twice a year which can be a pain but once you do it a cupel of times it's really easy.
Goprof150 Thanks for answering so fast, what about the air conditioner and miles per galon? My father been telling me it's a reliable car, very good and a classic, but it's hard to find parts for it, other than that, i won't find something as good and cheap as this, which i'm fine since i love the design.Oh, and how comfortable is it? i'm just so excited about being able to have this car as my first car!
Parts are still made for these cars and there all pretty cheep. There is no AC in these cars unless it's aftermarket but the windows work pretty well because you can direct the air straight into your face I never had a problem even on 100°F days. I do much enjoy the mpg I get about 25-30mpg and that's without flooring it. If you're looking to buy one of these cars check for rust in the rocker panels and you can easily check the rust on the floor pans by lifting up the carpet and seeing how easily the tar paper lifts up, rust should be your biggest worry when buying one of these cars because it's not new it's about 30 years old. But rust is pretty easy to fix as long as you know how to weld or rivet. You also don't need to baby these cars because they are tuff as hell, theses a reason why people off road them.
must be something wrong with your car or speedo. My 36hp '59 would cruise at 75. Factory gave top speed at 68mph. My 60hp '72 would cruise 90+ all day. 1500 had 53 hp

You're making me wish my 66 was on the road again; man i gotta get that engine put back together! :P
Haha pretty awesome. Best I got out of my 67. On a flat was 82mph after market exhaust and flame thrower distributor only mods
My '78 beetle once ran at 80mph with a/c on...did modern upgrades though.

My right front hubcap came flying off on the highway once and kept rolling down the road for a while
I hear you lol mine was off the road for a couple years because of brake issues.

My 65 got to 90 the other day.
If you roll up the windows it should go a bit faster. Better aerodynamics that way.
What kind of MPG would this get with your foot to the floor?
Not bad at all!😂
110 in my bug with just a cammed 1600
I see you in the comments in vwestlife videos
I recently purchased a 73 super beetle and my friend got it up to 100mph
Yeah this has the 1500cc engine in it. i'm not 100% sure but I think the super beetle is geared differently as well.

My '67 would peg the needle at 90!!
The people's car! To be honest, I would have thought it was slower *derp*
was It restored?
Nope, not restored
+coolbluelights oh
Can still hit the top with three people in it wow. Slow yes but an impressive vehicle nonetheless
Older run! 😁😂
Next time close the windows for more speed.
wheres the air bag????
hudsonvalleyguy1 there isnt any airbags in classic beetles
NA! dash & my teeth will do the trick.
Pedal to the radiator... LOL
What radiator?
The radiator for the bug is in the same area as the head gasket 😉
VWs have two head gaskets
coolbluelights And DOHC?
uhhh nope... it has a flat 4 or "Boxer" engine. two banks of opposed cylinders. with pushrods. no such thing as a DOHC beetle.

Is that the best insult you can come up with? lol fail troll
if you shave your unibrow it'll go faster. all that excess weight
who the fuck cares..
