7 MONTH Review Bosch Random Orbital Sander Unboxing // HINT: It's not Good

  • Опубліковано 17 сер 2024
  • I bought this Bosch random orbital sander so you would not have to! I really tried to like this sander, but in the end I was just too disappointed with some of the key aspects. I used it on a variety of projects, but ultimately I could not give it my seal of approval.
    Aside from the negatives, there were some noteworthy bright points. I really liked the dust collection. It comes with its own dust collection adapter that works pretty well. Whether you are using the dust cartridge or connecting it to a shop vac, you won't be disappointed. It really excels in that area.
    But the big down side to this sander is the lack of power. I found that it was totally useless when attempting to sand Spruce, Fir, or Pine. The Bosch random orbital sander will take forever to sand SPF and if you press too hard the pad will wear out really fast. Which is another gripe that I have. I went through 2 pads in 7 months. That seems way too fast to me.
    Either way, I hope you find the random orbital sander unboxing and review to be helpful and entertaining. Let me know in the comments if you suggest a different sander. I'll be in the market to purchase a new one and hopefully I choose wisely next time.

      I agree. Granted I just bought and used this today, BUT I used 36 grit on some 2x10's I'm turning into a custom desk. I used 36 grit for the glue joints between the boards and it worked great without pressure. Got the edges of the boards flat(5ft length) in a minute each overall. And I am tickled with the dust collection! ALSO, the vibration is damn near nonexistent.

    I bought this model sander from Amazon for like $55 last year and absolutely love it. For sanding I use 3M 710W and 775L paper in various grits, and have never had a problem with stock removal. I would say getting a couple of backup pads or pad savers is a smart investment, they have the same size/hole pattern pads for like 2 for $6, and they work wonders for preserving your actual sanding pad. Im on my 2nd pad since i bought it, but now use a pad saver everytime i touch the sander, so I dont anticipate having to change this pad again for years. The last couple months I've used it more for paint correction / detailing my car, using Meguiars Ultimate Compoud with a medium foam buffing pad on speed 5 does amazing work on any scratches/scuffs/imperfections. Follow up with 210 polish / sealant / wax and the car looks as good as any car I've ever seen before. Love this sander.

    The lowest speeds are for the most delicate sanding such as sanding between coats when you want to remove the least amount and at 2.5A it's on the lower end of power but this sander is designed for lighter types of sanding and not heavy sanding. The problem with lower power sanders is most people press down harder to force sander to remove more which causes excess heat to build up which results in the hooks to melt and curl. When this happens the hooks break and loose the hook holding ability and this is noticed when sandpaper flies off when started.

    This seems like a good sander for wood finishing and general use. They definitely make sanders for heavier work like what you were using it for. I was mostly interested in its dust collecting ability and hand fatigue. You covered the dust collecting so that's good. And if you didn't mention hand fatigue then it must not be an issue. So this sounds like a good sander to me.

    When you're polishing metal (especially thin aluminum like on an Airsteam trailer) it needs to be at a much lower speed than sanding. You bought a specialty power tool and were expecting it to be more of a brute force type of power tool. Unfortunately, your review is misleading people because you didn't know enough about the product and didn't do the research before publishing your opinions. Maybe do an updated video where you use the tool for what it was intended for.

    Dude, just saw your video, I have the same sander and it's strictly a finishing sander (120 - 320 grit) which helps the hook and loop last longer which I agree is a little weak. But these are not meant for a lot of material removal so sort of asking a razor to cut trees down. On the other hand I also have Bosch's 3.3 amp and 6 amp sanders and you can stand on them and they won't stop. Obviously they're heavier and require more attention but vibration control is excellent, great dust collection and meant for serious material removal, try one out. Nice video!

    • @DudeSawdust
      @DudeSawdust  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the feedback! Yes, you are completely correct. I think it should be marketed as a finishing sander....I think that would be more helpful. I'll have to get one of those more heavy duty sanders like you are talking about. Cheers!

    • @comancheclub3449
      @comancheclub3449 2 роки тому +1

      Are those 3.3amp sanders still true random orbit sanders? Electric, battery, pneumatic?
      I've been tearing my hair out trying to figure out if the tool is wrong or if I'm using it wrong.
      On my second Bosch in 2 days, 3rd overall. First was a Dewalt. Dewalt pad literally wouldn't spin just holding the sander in the air. Motor spun just fine.
      Bosch would spin, but even very slight pressure was enough to stall the pad. Again, motor was spinning away, just the pad would stop. And on its lower/lowest settings I could easy stall the pad *and* motor with a single finger pushing on the pad.
      Is there a true random orbital sander that can be used for both finish work and heavy pressure/material removal?

    • @jgemeinhardt3955
      @jgemeinhardt3955 2 роки тому +1

      Yes, they're random orbit sanders and they are corded, not sure the size of the stroke on the orbit but I bought them as I couldn't justify Festool's price and have sanded everything from pine to hickory with great results. Now occasionally I will replace a pad as they do lose their grip over time but most orbitals with heavy usage will wear them out as pads are considered a consumable. Try model ROS65VC-5 which is a 5" machine, they also make a 6". I use 3M's cubitron discs which really bite and no worries., hope this helps.

    If the hook and loop wear out you don’t need to buy a new pad, just gently sand the existing hook and loop smooth and replace it with aftermarket self stick materiel. I use my sander a great deal and in 20 years I’m on my third pad but 10th hook and loop. Replacing it takes about 10 minutes and the aftermarket stuff grips the paper better and far outlasts the OEM material. You do need to be a bit more careful when replacing the paper to avoid peeling off the replacement H&L.

    One doesn't rely on disc hooks to attach the sanding pad. It has to be any bond or glue available in shop. It is the same for all orbital sanders.

    Not the best review methodology I’ve ever heard. While I do appreciate your attempt to convey your findings, the parameters of that class of ROS are all fairly similar. I have the Bosch unit too but I didn’t get the variable speed model, it seemed a bit pointless. While the stroke rate is similar to other brands in this class, the sander is a bit more delicate but that’s why I like it, essentially for the reasons you gave as pros. My PorterCable is a bit more aggressive so I use that on SPF for rougher but narrow stock. It’s also harder to grip with the vibration and taller to hold ergonomically but works out if you like to grip it lower with your hand like a strangle hold. My variable speed Milwaukee was very aggressive but jumped all over the place and the pad wore out way too quick. My Makita seemed perfect in many ways but the cloth dust collection bag was terrible and the pad wore out too. The best small ROS I’ve ever owned was the DeWalt unit that seemed to have a perfect profile in every way. I currently use a Bosch GET75-6N for all my aggressive sanding and my Bosch ROS10 5” in single speed. The ergonomic grip is ideal, there’s no variable speed to fail, it’s for light duty so not hard pressing in use to ruin the pad, and it’s cheap. I don’t like the dust collection hard plastic as it breaks easily. So you are correct in that these small Bosch ROS units might not be the best all around sanders. But, there are better models in the Bosch ROS lineup. Yeap, more money and way better performance without going to a Bosch imitation Rotex. Thanks again for the review. I’ve been as honest as I can.

    • @DudeSawdust
      @DudeSawdust  Рік тому

      Your insight is well thought out and I appreciate it very much. You’d think by now I would have bought a new ROS but I’ve had to strictly prioritize buying what tools I don’t have rather than what I want to replace. Having said that the 3M ROS looks good as well as the festool. But I might go with the Dewalt before I splurge on all the expensive stuff. Thanks for watching!

      I assume its an old deck that you want to resurface. I would get a hand held belt sander. Budget price? That's a tough question. If it is a deck then it is likely a big project. If it's a big project then I have learned that I can't trust cheap. But Ryobi does have a 6 amp 3 inch corded belt sander at Home Depot for like 65$ that would probably be fine. I think that is going to be your best bet for a cheap price. Otherwise, I trust Ridged as a comparable next step up 6.5 amp 3 inch. It's probably more reliable. I found your vid cause I was in the market for a ROS and actually settled on the one you're reviewing for my use case. Did some more research, and as you asked for a reco, it seems the sander you needed is the 65-series version of the Bosch sander or another brand in that class. The use cases you described here sounded fairly demanding. The 20 is strictly a finishing sander (hence the 2.5A). Also, apparently the lower speed settings not functional is the norm when too much pressure is applied (please dont yell at me). Anyways, here's a decent video comparing sander types, and keep up the good work: ua-cam.com/video/uBSOan7D1Ow/v-deo.html

      You are right and make some great points. I'll eventually be purchasing a stronger sander. As far as pressure applied with the lower speeds....In the video demo I was applying zero pressure. It basically just vibrates on the lower settings, it really does nothing productive. On the other hand it does have some good qualities. I agree, if you only want it for finishing then it will do a great job providing a smooth surface. I would argue that Bosch should call it a finishing sander on the box. If you don't like my yelling then you should check out my most recent video where I build a drill charging station...my intro has some quality yelling you should watch and and find off putting! :)

    Huh…. Mine works great on all speeds. You must be pushing down to hard. Your only supposed to use weight of your hand.

    What is the best sander for a kitchen table project?

    • @DudeSawdust
      @DudeSawdust  3 роки тому +1

      I haven't formed an opinion to that question yet. But if you are in the market for something nice I would probably look into this one:
      amzn.to/3A2STwb
      But if you're not interested in breaking the bank then I would probably get something more economical like this one:
      amzn.to/3xnRheJ
      People have told my that Dewalt is really good and I have never bought a Dewalt product that I was unhappy with.
      I'd love to know what you settle on. I'm not ready to buy another sander since I decided to save my money for some other tools first. I'll just use my Bosch 2.5 amp ROS in the meantime. But the day will come when I get something real nice!

      @@DudeSawdust the Bosch GET-75 is an absolute beast. I own one and would compare it to the Festool Rotex which I had in loan for about a month but half the price.

    If u have only one orbital sander, how can u compare it and tell its is not better than others….🤔

      Great question.....This review is not comparing it to other sanders but what I think it as standing alone.

      I know right!?!?!? Actually I have a Dewalt angle grinder still sitting in the box that I bought for another project but didn't end up using it due to an audible. I'll have to showcase it someday. Thanks for watching!

    Rubber grips are great.....until they age and deteriorate and they feel nasty!! Anyone who ever had tools with that rubber on them knows all too well how crappy that stuff gets with age and it is disgusting!
