After 2 decades of the same voice actor, I can't get used to a different one, I'm always going to imagine Masahiro Nonaka's voice when I see Kyo Kusanagi.
Kusanagi is not Masahiro Nonaka but Mitsuo Iwata. This is why K9999 and Kusanagi have a special intro. Nozomu Sasaki (K9999) dub Tetsuo and Mitsuo Iwata (Kusanagi) dub Kaneda.

I love the voices of the KOF guys, especially those of Kyo, Iori and Terry, these Japanese really know how to put feeling into it, now they made me want to do a Dubstep with Kyo's voice 😤😤🔥🔥
I agree. Haven't played any of the KOF games myself but I'm hoping to try into the franchise without playing right from the beginning which is jarring. As for my favorite KOF character, I might go with Kyo Kusanagi or Iori Yagami.

as a kyo fan, the original voice actor brought this character to life however! i will say the new voice actor grew on me and he brings a more youthful voice to kyo and with time I'm certain he will adjust to the role :)

Like Chu E. said, it has been over 2 decades already, someone need to take over his role sooner or later and with the way KOF refreshing itself(2D->3D, more voice dialogue, upcoming anime, etc...) for a new beginning, which will last for like another 20 years, SNK need to do it now.

Regarding the big name portion, it seems to me that SNK dipped into the Idol field with an increasing number of VAs from the Idolmaster series. Even Samurai Spirits (2019) is not exempt from this rule.
When I first heard Kyo in XIV, I didn't even know that it wasn't Nonaka that was voice him. That's how good the new guy is. SNK did a good job finding Kyo a new voice actor in Maeno. It's also a smart thing for them because back in the 90's, the voice actors did songs for their characters, and Maeno has a background in singing for many characters in DIFFERENT voices: ua-cam.com/video/_AsEnl5TTNU/v-deo.html
I do miss Nonaka's portrayal of the character quite a bit. Maeno is probably the best and closest thing I've heard to it, but there's just nothing like the OG. Something about those rekka lines and the way he delivers his super lines can't be recreated, I think. Maeno's voice does some interesting things at higher pitches though, I'll give him that.

And in KOF XII/XIII, he gone all out with even giving out unique EX move voice lines, something only a few characters got, even in Maximum Impact, there was sign of it That is why Tomoaki was the new VA of Kyo, he always loved to voice him one day but… _man, either the direction is ass or he is literally worse than fan sprite animators,_ examples being KOF Kai’s episode 14. Infact, it might BE because of the voice direction which makes it worse as seen in KOF XV and Ash Crimson or Ralf Jones because _he’s the same voice actor for XIII_
It's just like he has a some or something more it include :o. Their voice seems to be look like similar at one another. However, in Iori's Voice Comparison, the original one is the best, primary and seem to be more of a wild mannerisms compared to the new one, but I do hope that a new Voice actor will go more places as him though. Just showing some respect :). I can't cite much longer, but I can only say: "Try your best, voice actors and actresses. Try your best everyone ^_^."

When we consider the sound he started dropping during XIII it makes me feel like he took a lot of energy to voice Kyo again and Nonaka might not be able to take it anymore. But the new sound is honestly "bad" to me. I don't like this new voice at all. is that it sounds bad and looks very contrary to the character It didn't make Kyo look younger, it sounded more like a lack of energy. Many people say He is still inexperienced but I would like to say "Not like that." He's been a voice actor for many anime so it's impossible for him to "No experience" in voicing characters Considering the other character voices were changed like K' , Terry , Mary , Mai , they were still doing well except for Kyo's voice which didn't match the game the most. I know that Maeno is doing his best to get the most out of his voice. But it wasn't enough and somehow it wasn't the Kyo I knew in the past. And that I'm commenting doesn't mean Nonaka will come back, it's just that I don't like the new voice. However, if we miss the original Kyo voice, you can use the character voice changer mod in XV and you will get Nonaka back in the new game. Even though Nonaka isn't 100% back, he's the best Kyo ever to me.
About choosing seiyuu/VA I think the voice studio really need to choose a proper voice actors instead choosing seiyuu based of popularity I actually hate that Genshin always choose popular seiyuu and some of their voice aren't even match to the character their voices Dainsleif for example.

The new voice actor made a pretty good job. But Mr. Nonaka's screams and grunts were awesome. Nobody will surpass that.

XV Kyo's design now fits Maeno's voice. While indeed, Nonaka brought life to Kyo all these years, it's time to move on my men.
