- A very loud send off, to a true workhorse of the Mid Hants Railway.
With is ''10 Year'' boiler ticket up, the crew give Black 5 No. 45379 one last trip ''Over the Alps'' on a beautiful sunny evening.
This film also includes the very last Alton bound departure, made by the engine, and then having run round it's train at Alton, it's also see climbing the 1 in 60 gradient, at Hampshire Hunt for the last time.
With the date and timescales for its overhaul still unknown, it may be a long time before her LMS Bark, will be heard across Hampshire.
BR Standard class 4 No. 76017, was also in operation, and can be see being prepared and used on the second service train.
Probably the most successful locomotive design ever ! Equally at home on heavy freights and fast passenger trains !! A real jack of all trades and master of them all !

She is a grand sight just on her own going through the station. I prefer yard and station movements to being in passenger service. Thanks for a lovely video. Hope she gets her boiler and other things done sooner than later.

Magnificent again. Beautiful station excellent yard work. I am sure those guys who are volunteering there must enjoy their work. At least the locomotives are kept clean and tidy as well as the surrounding areas. Great quality all round. It's like being there. Greetings from Train Lord in South Australia

And so Stateside, if this were the case there would be throngs of people stumbling over each other with their i-phones, etc. taking videos of the event even though the majority would not be steamer buffs...where as everything appears to be ho-hum, business as usual in this video....and yet then, we (the states) are lagging far behind in railroad technology and infrastructure compared to other industrialized nations in the current age.

Another super video. Quality is excellent; are you using a “broadcast quality” camera? What camera is it, please? I guess that Black5 could do another 10 years but rules are rules. To think it would’ve been done in a couple of days when “in Service” but now a couple of years plus!
It seemed a bit ‘sad’ to give her a ‘The End’ headboard, a bit too final!
Ron leitch we'll it was the end. The sign itself, was a copy of one carried by Black 5 No. 45212 in August 1968, when it hauled the last seceded steam passenger service, for British Railway's. So it was very appropriate to have it really.
Sad but hope we see her again not too long away. I love the black fives!

What's the crank attached to the coupling rod on the left rear wheels of the locomotives? Are they generators?
Yes it's a generator.
It is the speedometer drive for a Smiths gauge in the cab. The gauge will read according to how much power is being generated by the wheels rotation. You can just about see one on the Black 5 too.
What happens now? Is she left out in the weather to rust away, or placed in a shed under cover. Are there no plans to do the 10 year service? This video almost gives the impression that this loco is in the Barry Island scrap yeard
I did a driving experience on this engine. Hope she’s back soon. Coincidentally this was filmed on my birthday. If I win big on the Euro Millions I’ll find the overhaul; promise.

@@theextremeanimator4721 depending on how clean the engine is on the inside but this is mostly true.
They just release water vapour and a bit of ash which can be cleansed easily

I sometimes wonder if they are training new drivers to operate these old engines? Most of the guys you see are let's say 'of a certain age'.
Cyborg Badger they do have a few younger volunteers coming through the ranks.
I was the driver of 45379 in almost all this footage, and I'm 35. I hope that's not a certain age! At least six of the other 29 rostered drivers are younger than me, so we've got a pretty good spread.
I'll have to watch the video again Paul, to see if you look really old for 35, due to having a really tough paper round or something when younger, and I'll get back to you. :)

This is so upsetting for me, the Black 5's are my number 2 favorite of all time..
It doesn't have to end like this, why can't it stay and live on that or another heritage railway until it doesn't work at all and then it could be a static display some where for more generations to admire, insted of wiping all history of them slowly.
EDIT: Sorry, I just realised it's not getting scrapped and is going into overhaul, :)
Lol. I doubt you'll find many viable steam locos go to scrap in this country. Most of them came from a scrap yard as it is.

It will run again, but is at the back of the railways overhaul queue. So will be a good few years before it runs again.

Hasn't started yet, and won't for many years. Currently in storage.
