On the Black 5 is my Father who sadly passed away 4 years ago. This is my favourite video & I watch it at least once a week to see his face. Thank you for this once in a lifetime video, it’s just fantastic ♥️🦁
As a former 60's BR fireman equally at home on a 5 or a Brit I can honestly say that I never thought I would see the like again in my lifetime. It could almost have been a 'contrived re-enactment' of a once common sight on our railway's & certainly brought a big lump to my throat, I think there are a lot of ex BR men out there who will feel the same..... Many thanks.
"They're pulling away! they're pulling away!" henry puffed. His driver laughed. "Don't worry," he said, "they won't get away from us!" then, slowly but surely, henry pulled alongside the other engine. "We'll show them! We'll show them!"
I like watching these videos not just for seeing the engines but also seeing the joy and camaraderie of the people in the carriages having the time of their lives. It's more than just a train ride,it's an emotional experience which is what steam is all about.
Just quite the best bit of head to head steam stuff i've seen yet!! This has just got to be a such a rare thing you've captured here. Well done, 5***** :-) Awesome.
Watch this time and time again. Just wish I had been on Church Fenton Station when they both came through. A scene not likely to be repeated very often if at all again.
I love watching these powerful beasts running free doing what they are supposed to do.I don't care what anyone says,to me they are living breathing beings with a soul.Bless every last one of them.
I can see, and see this exceptionally shot video over and over again. In fact even after watching it the number of times the steel wheels spin, there will still be a lot of excitement and involvement in being a part of this pure joy. My salutations to the experts moving these beauties so gracefully. Thanks for the video 🙏🏼
I don't know how many times I have watched this video. it is the best on You Tube. I get goosebumps every time I watch it.....well done. real opportunist.
wow thats the best train clip if seen yet, and so rare that for steam engines running parallel on the mainline, its great when the black 5 draw at the same speed and you get an excellent shot of the engine. This is probably the first time since steam days this has happened EPIC :D
To see something like this in this day and age on the East Coast Main Line is nothing short of amazing! Absolutely superb! Bet it doesn't happen again for a long time!
0There was no way the 5 was losing that race to the 7!! Fantastic. Even though it was load 2 v load 10. Thats why I enjoy being a main line steam registered driver. Pure perfection & probably THE best steam video on UA-cam. JG.
Oh WOOW!! That was just amazing. Really brought a smile to my face. Two steam trains racing on the mainline. What a specticle. Just completely awesome! Thanks for posting it. What a shame there wasn't someone filming on the black five and the two shots combined. That would have been brilliant. I bet those people on the station must have thought they had gone through a time vortex or something! Great!
thats got to be the best shot ive ever seen and one of the rareist i would of loed that because 70013 and black 5's are my favourite engines !!!!!!!!!!!!!! and great shot mate
Every now and again an absolutely fantastic video comes along. This has gotta be the best by a long shot. I thought I had a brilliant experience this weekend seeing the lickey bankers. This must of been somthing else!
This is a fabulous racetrack for steam, beautifully shown by these two machines that found fame in 1968. I was very lucky in August 1975, my footplate ride to the Shildon celebrations on 43106 was Chesterfield to York. After we crawled through Killamarsh and Rotheram, our private train with 8F 48773 and 43106 opened out, I reckoned that for 2 scrap ex BR jobs, which were largely in ex BR condition. I reckoned we were going at 57 through Church Fenton, Steam Ban barely lifted!
Excellent piece of footage, Beautiful piece of steam history and one smooth running engine too. We run some steam here in the US too, don't know if anyones interested or knows what im talking about here, but they have selected a Union Pacific Big Boy engine for full running restoration, engine # is 4014 I believe. Largest steam engine ever built, (4-8-8-4 articulated) only 25 built, for hauling massive loads up inclines- cost is projected at $3 to $5 million and take around 5 years.
Passing by in opposite directions is rare too, when 70013 was arriving in Carlisle back in 2013 with the 1T57 anniversary train 46115 was passing us in the opposite direction.
Fab piece of footage that I'll bet hadn't happened since the steam days back then, and is unlikely to be repeated soon! I'll reckon the 5 was doing a bit more than its max permitted speed at Church Fenton though lol.

Did enginemen ever race each other like this?
@@connormclernon26 of course but obviously only possible in certain situations & if safe to do so. A bit of fun that no longer exists.
@@SYKAROST sounds like a lot of fun...
No sore throat was also a place 😭
@@SYKAROST I'm sure someone paid for a pint depending on the wager
My favorite part of this video is when the camera passes the Black 5 and you see the engineer pull back into the cab like "Oh, it's on now."
"We can't be having that now, can't we?"
Holy shit he really does eh lol
0:48?
But cromwell was pulling more whille the black 5 pulled 2
you can even see the fireman smiling. he knows what's up.
Love it how the driver of the Black 5 beckoned- "get outa here" as his engine pulled ahead!!
Absolutely superb footage.
Absolutely glorious, I love how many steam locomotives the UK has preserved and how often they run on the mainline.
Ahh that never gets old, seeing a Stanier 5 just hammering along.
I still watch this...one of my favourites of all time. Thanks
"They're pulling away! they're pulling away!" henry puffed. His driver laughed. "Don't worry," he said, "they won't get away from us!" then, slowly but surely, henry pulled alongside the other engine. "We'll show them! We'll show them!"
i love u for saying that
Love watching this over and over again with my son. Our favourite bit is when the engine driver on Black 5 sees their being overtaken and opens up!
I like watching these videos not just for seeing the engines but also seeing the joy and camaraderie of the people in the carriages having the time of their lives. It's more than just a train ride,it's an emotional experience which is what steam is all about.
that is how all railways should be
Had this saved in my watch later for years. Think it has to be my favourite ever steam video. Just fantastic 👏
This is one of the best railway videos on UA-cam.
Even now, 50 years after steam locomotives stopped pulling passenger trains, they still have the power to make people gaze in awe and wonder.
I love watching these powerful beasts running free doing what they are supposed to do.I don't care what anyone says,to me they are living breathing beings with a soul.Bless every last one of them.

Brilliant, takes me back to the 50's when I often remember seeing high speed racing on multiple tracks.
Made me smile like a little child watching this video clip!! Thank you for posting!!!

EPIC :D
Thank you for sharing this with us! WOW - what a moment to have witnessed! My new favourite video; I absolutely love it!
Many thanks. What great footage. They were belting along!
Brilliant video, I bet the folk on the station near the end could not believe their eyes!!
Cheers Dave.
Where else in the world would you see such a sight? And what a thrill for those standing on the station. Locomotives at speed on both sides!
In Germany they drive parallel to each other quite often. Just search "dampflok parallelfahrt" in UA-cam, it's awesome!
In Britain, dont know why, it seems to be very impressie.
In Germany?
Nahhhh.
That was seriously awesome! It must've been quite a sight to be waiting at that station and have both of them pass by before splitting off!
To see something like this in this day and age on the East Coast Main Line is nothing short of amazing! Absolutely superb! Bet it doesn't happen again for a long time!
I never thought id see the day. What an experience. I love the bit at about 1 minute in where it appear the driver of the black 5 'puts his foot down'
That's a fantastic piece of footage awesome the speed of both drivers ....we got a race on here ..right lets give it too them ....cheers
Ted Barnes it shows that steam engines are still viable in this world with Diesels and electric engines
Oh to have been on that platform as these two magnificent locos raced by.
0There was no way the 5 was losing that race to the 7!! Fantastic. Even though it was load 2 v load 10. Thats why I enjoy being a main line steam registered driver. Pure perfection & probably THE best steam video on UA-cam. JG.
It’s almost like a race between the train you are in hauled by Oliver Cromwell and this loco seen next to you 44932 with two support coaches behind it
That's the first time I've seen something like that for 45 years absolutely awesome. Brought a lump to the throat!!!
THIS IS WHAT I CALL SPEED!!!!!!
I can honestly say i have never seen this before in my life, brilliant film they should make this a sport,i would watch it.Thanks for the post
That's a fabulous bit of footage, glad you were there to capture it...
Superb, this is what steam at speed is all about.
Oh WOOW!! That was just amazing. Really brought a smile to my face. Two steam trains racing on the mainline. What a specticle. Just completely awesome! Thanks for posting it. UP is great to have restored Big Boy
Must’ve been fantastic to witness that side by side running.
Excellent footage of this very rare event, thanks for posting.
I honestly believe this is the most unique perspective of a running steam locomotive anywhere on UA-cam.
This is still quite possibly the best video on you tube.
I'd have loved to be on that platform at the end! Would have been an amazing sight! Amazing video.
Brlliant, just so good, thanks for a terrific video.
Superb video just amazing to see two steam locos running side by side on the mainline.
Well done on that.
Fantastic piece of action.
Unbelievable!! Caught at the right place at the right time!! Fantastic.
Wow a race what a fantastic sight that must of been thanks for sharing
0:52 Love that, going under the bridge you can hear the Black 5 open up, driver deciding it to give a go.

Brilliant video. I was on the SSE as well. Slightly further back. Very good record of the event.
This is probably a one in a lifetime oppurtunity
Seeing two steam engines race!
Passing by in opposite directions is rare too, when 70013 was arriving in Carlisle back in 2013 with the 1T57 anniversary train 46115 was passing us in the opposite direction.
It was awesome 10 years ago..and its still awesome today.

Excellent filming,thanks for sharing.
*Henry theme starts playing*
Fab piece of footage that I'll bet hadn't happened since the steam days back then, and is unlikely to be repeated soon! I'll reckon the 5 was doing a bit more than its max permitted speed at Church Fenton though lol.
Excellent footage, a sight like this really brings the best out in mainline steam! Liked and favourited, thanks for uploading :D
