Hey I hope you see my comment. I am going through a personal situation which made me think of this exact scene... We connect with and enjoy this scene because it's not just about a guilty conscious being relieved.... I believe It's ACTUALLY acceptance of defeat...... When you finally have the guts to actually give up, it reduces your stress and calms you down because you are not trying to survive that situation anymore. You get to look forward to a new horizon......
This guy is an acting animal. He is as deep as it gets. Like Gary Oldman, Daniel Day Lewis, Alan Rickman, Al Pacino, and Robert DeNiro, he is heavy into method acting. I just worry it might really mess with his health and cause problems for the rest of his life. It’s not just the weight gain and loss, it’s the research he does for the character and the immersion he puts himself through. He morphs and literally becomes the character. I watch him just to see what his face is going to do next. But he, himself, said, he doesn’t want actors to think they have to go to the physical extremes he has done. He had a heart to heart with Gary Oldman after Oldman played Churchill, and Oldman told him to use make up and other things instead of gaining a ton of weight or losing so much you might die. Oldman did the same thing when he played Sid Vicious in “Sid and Nancy” because Sid Vicious was a terrible junkie. Now that Christian Bale has a good family life and children, he is backing off some of these extremes because he is getting older and this stuff can really hurt you physically.
@@melaniejackson-cracchiolo356 true, Bale's genes are truly one of a kind given how easily they can adapt to immediate changes and transform mesomorph. He even stated he enjoyed losing so much weight to only weigh 28kgs.
A wonderfully eerie movie that gives an immersive perspective of what the mind is capable of. How fear, guilt, and self-loathing of an action can be so great that it is buried within the unconscious. Yet despite this fascinating self-defense mechanism, the repressed action continues to exert a malignant influence within the unconscious, not unlike buried toxic waste contaminating a nearby water supply. You wouldn't think that a happy ending could come from such a powerfully bleak film, but there it is.
I found ending was underwhelming and kinda my least favorite part. But the more I think about it the more I kinda like it. I was a bit disappointed that all the mysterious and surreal elements that got me drawn in snapped back to reality but that was the point. The surreal rabbit hole went deep, from the blood coming out of the fridge to the moment he kills Ivan was such a huge build up and then a few mins later it's like "oh the guy had some terrible repressed memories and he worked it out." Still can appreciate the ending and overall really liked the film, one that grips you from the first scene 8.5/10. What I loved the most was the dark, grungy, raw, bleak atmosphere the movie explored. Fantastic film
He no longer sees himself as the victim. He isn't hallucinating cars running him over. He realizes *he is the monster.* For the first time, he blames himself rather than the rest of the world.
Exactly. He answers his own question at the airport (“is everyone in on it!?! Huh!?!?”). No man, nobody’s “in on it”. It’s all you. As Ivan tells him at the bar, albeit in a different context: “YOU caused the accident”
he is a bad person because he ran from his actions instead of taking responsibility. It was his fault. He killed a kid. And then escaped. Feeling guilty doesnt make you a good person. A good person would have stayed with the mother and the kid, doing their best to save the kid and apologize in remorse after the incident. he can sleep at the end because he finally did the right thing and got rid of his guilt
Great Movie and I’m sure everyone knows this feeling. You’re just so exhausted at said point all you want to do is sleep. Nothing else matters, just closing your eyes, resting and drifting off into the pure bliss state of sleep.
In any other circumstances this would be a sad ending. But in this, it is the happiest. He fixed himself, now he can sleep. The next day might be his best in years.
Thank God he finally gets to take the road to Salvation. Whew! Such a heavy movie. Psychological drama. Reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock, or the Twilight Zone

I have never run over someone or gone that long without sleeping, but I do have experienced sleep deprivation a few time, where I'm completely exhausted. Finally being able to lay down and sleep after that is the best feeling in the world.
It's one of those things where it makes you question, does he even need jail time at that point? The mental and physical abuse he put himself through due to guilt might just be enough.
I really feel sorry for Bale's character. He is clearly not a bad guy. He happened to do the wrong thing at the wrong time and that mistake cost his entire life
@@theodorvalentinghita1779 It’s very hard not to feel sorry for him. He’s a good person who made a terrible mistake. I don’t think this will cost him his life though. His voluntary surrender would help him in court, and an involuntary manslaughter charge (plus the charge for fleeing) may get him 20, maybe 10 years prison, maybe just a couple. It’s hard to say. But as a mid to late 20-something yr old he could still live a good life after that.
The point of the movie is that Trevor needed to confess what he did and serve his punishment in order to he saved of his insomnia, and save his soul. There's a lot of imagery in the movie that shows Trevor is on the path to hell. The ending shows him finally taking the path towards Salvation, going to the police to confess rather than going to the airport to flee. Which is why the hallway they take him down and his holding cell are all white.
It's not brutal. It's the ultimate redemption. He accepted his mistake and the punishment for it, showing to himself he's a good person. It's a hugely positive ending.
