HOLY CRAP, this video only had 300 views yesterday (Oct 2nd), where did everyone come from!? I was not expecting this at all after seeing such a slow climb in views for the past few days, thanks everyone! I'll also take this time to address some of the comments I'm seeing here. First of all, the music, I get that it can get loud at times, but that's how loud some of the game's music can actually get, I didn't change the volume at all mostly because I didn't have any sort of audio commentary so I assumed the volume wasn't going to be a big deal. I've seen that someone has said that player.mdl is similar to the Day One demo version, I said that in the video so I don't get why that was even brought up here at all. I remember someone mentioning that the age of the beta is younger than what I said, first of all, I'm aware that the game had a gold release several days before, but I'm referring to when the game released outside of that gold release, but if that comment (that seems to have disappeared) was in reference to the release date listed on the steam page, that date is incorrect. The game DID release on November 19th, however Valve changed it to an incorrect date on the (infamous) Steampipe update, this is similar to how Steam listed HL:S's release date as being earlier than CS:S when in fact the release date was closer to the release of HL2. Again, thanks everyone, it was quite a surprise to see this after going through another boring day of school, I've enjoyed seeing what's been discussed in the comments since yesterday and I hope I get around to making part 2 soon!
Gina as an alternate model for Gordon is, IIRC, a relic of a briefly-explored concept to allow the player character to be male or female at the player's discretion.
Wild how much nicer the MP5 and shotgun textures are, I'm surprised there aren't many videos actually going into what the differences are, it seems like a lot of the bigger half life channels have either ignored Net Test 2 or haven't gotten to it yet. Can't wait for the next vids!
Day One has a LOT of higher res textures, and even some cut mechanics (e.g. a one in the chamber mechanic for the handgun, where you can reload twice to get 18rnd instead of 17)
I worked on the TCRF page, thanks so much for using us as a reference, the animation differences (besides the idle) I didn't know, expect an update soon!
@@PostScriptreall2 yeah a download link for everything in the video would be great, you can just upload it to youtube that's what we mostly use for video hosting.
@@zeitgeistlime ua-cam.com/play/PLe85BruqwADJoubePzNJg-ABOxYv9J8ux.html Also a link to an unlisted playlist to the videos that are included in the 7zip file, hopefully TCRF allows the YT embedded player to loop videos
Part 3: The Pepsi Lore Jk, but I like how in the half life beta wad there is a pepsi machine texture. Good video, didn't know about these model differences.
I couldn't really dig into the files myself and at the time of the leak tcrf don't have a page yet but now that there's a video I can finally see what's in the build
If you want to dig into the files still, you should get a program like VPKedit (github.com/craftablescience/VPKEdit/) to unpack the file 'pak0.pak'. That archive contains the rest of the game's files.
Huh, I had no idea that even existed. I've read the comic on the Combine Overwiki and I've seen what you mean with the Gluon gun, never heard of that before, though I'm not surprised I haven't since as far as I can tell it's an internet comic from the mid-late 90s, when the internet was in its infancy. From what I've seen the early Half-life content shown seems to be in a sort of transitional period between the 1997 alpha and Day One, there's some maps shown from the alpha, as well as some maps that don't appear in it that looks very much like the alpha. I could go all day about that but to answer the rest of the comment, I don't think this was well known at all so I can't comment about that being known to be a thing before the Nettest, and additionally since this is a comic I can't be entirely sure if the author took some creative liberty and made that whole mechanic up for the comic, it's hard to tell if that was something in the game at some point. I don't think I will add that to part 2 as I'm mainly talking about the Net Test beta and how it's different to the retail game, I've heard there are some engine changes and whatnot, but if there was any significant changes to the Gluon gun, someone would have pointed it out already. The only change related to the Gluon gun in the beta (that I'm aware of) is that, according to skill.cfg (the file that Half-Life uses to change values depending on difficulty settings) has the Gluon gun doing half the damage it does in the retail game when its in the 'narrow' setting, here's the part of the file I'm referencing: // Egon Gun sk_plr_egon_narrow1 "3" sk_plr_egon_narrow2 "3" sk_plr_egon_narrow3 "3" (That's something that I will probably cover in part 2 so consider it a sneak peek if you will)
@@PostScriptreall2 The Gluon gun has autoaim in the nettest, equally as exaggerated as in the comic. Scolcer has pointed out the autoaim in his video on the nettest, but is probably unaware about the scene in dank and scud.
Spoken of or... well anywho, the wider Valve community has this tendency to just *ignore* publically available early content, with the best example being the proper 2003/4 crowbar handle texture, in retail Half-Life 2 it uses the 2002 era handle while retaining a finalized head, not sure when the handle texture was found but a 2013 gamebana uploaded added it to the game under the false pretense that it was the 2002 texture come 2023 with the Valve gigaleak, which included a higher resolution texture, and suddenly everyone claims this is a new discovery
I'm aware you know that, but the point was it would be worth also mentioning when the release build was compiled rather than just the release date, since viewers generally are unaware, it's useful info. People get the impression that the build is a month older, meanwhile the first actual release build as you know was compiled October 29 (Italy), released over there even a week later than November 19. The amount of content that changed in such a small timeframe makes me curious about nettest 1. (I'm talking about the date when it was compiled, not the release date)
Yeah I'm also aware of that, I was referring to the first English release of the game, which is what everyone would know about. I completely forgot about that release when making the video but even if I had remembered the existence of that release I still wouldn't have changed a thing.
@@PostScriptreall2 Yeah, you're right, the date of compilement isn't relevant to the subject matter of your video. Even the 2 weeks' difference of the English build.
@@PostScriptreall2 That would make it matter more though, not less, but I don't care that it's not mentioned. You intended to show only the release date for a good reason.

Got real MarphitimusBlackimus vibes. I like it!
Half-Life 1 Beta was light and pretty
Half-Life 1 Beta was light and clean
half life 1 baytuh was dark and griddy
the beta was light hearted and giddy
The Sex-Life beta was dark and titty

the model animations seem more cartoonish to me in the beta
The HL1 beta funnily enough feels more cartoonish than the final game. A complete opposite to the Hl2 beta
