I know this is an old video, but I am thinking of getting one of these, so thank you for the video. I am blown away with the product's claim that the carrier is only 17" deep between the rails. It sure looks deeper than that, but that is what the manual states. I sure wish someone had actually measured it and reported the manual's accuracy. Someone mentioned the wrong application of the hardware, so hopefully you fixed that (put the lock washers between the washer and nut). You could also replace the nuts with nylon locking nuts (without the locking washers). You sure don't need those center bolts backing out on you. Anyway, thanks for the video!
@@minutemark it’s still together in one piece!
@@travisp11 That great to hear! Thank you for the reply. Were the internal dimensions correct? Is it really only 17" wide (from fore to aft as installed in the hitch)?
@@minutemark I don’t own this rack anymore but my buddy now has it. I will call him for the internal dimensions. Looking at me sitting in it I don’t think it’s 17” deep
@travisp11 Hi! Thank you for the thorough review! I have a questions about the exhaust. Did you end up putting a heat shield? What do you recommend? Could I just used a carrier cover to protect my stuff from the heat?
I bought heat shield from the store and then I simply cut out strip and screwed it on and it was ready to go
The lock washers included are M10 lock washers. They go under the nuts on the 4 M10 bolts holding the left and right platform sections to the main bar.
The cross brace uses an M8 washer under the head and nut of the M8 bolt.
Thank you!
Looks good. I wish I had seen this a few days ago. I bought an aluminum want at Tractor Supply for $109. Already used it, so can't return it now. The one I got works good. License plate is blocked when loaded so I mounted a bracket and relocated it to the rack, just in case. Worked well. No complaints.
Sorry this is necroposting but... would it be advantageous to stagger the bolts on the center bar? Meaning front and rear thread from left and two centers thread from ring? Also, what about using Loctite on the threads? Is there any chance that they might work loose?
Blue loctite never hurts and just tighter the nuts and bolts a little at a time on each one till they are done.
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
I am just curious on the other end is that another receiver? Could you put a bike rack onto the back of the rack?
Good question. I would think you could if you drilled holes for the locking peg that goes through the receiver. I don’t have this rack or the Jeep anymore so I can’t say if that receiver bar is capped or not.
How is this working for ya? I was gonna use it for a standup jetski that clocks in around 350lbs...I was gonna install it upside down with carpeted wood bunks.
My buddy has had it for a few years now. It works fine. I weight over 250lbs so I don’t think an extra 100 lbs would cause an issue. Just take your time putting it together.
Yeah that's a little wobbly but for the price and purposes should do just fine. Had to install a similar one with a ramp for a power chair and its still holding up well for the guy a year later.
The cross bolt keeps it secure and I have a hitch lock I put on it. Honestly, it may see a few bags of softener salt every month and a few cases of water. Oh, I'm hoping to snag a nice doe in January!
It should work fine .Good luck on the hunt and if u need any help eating the dear meat your more than welcome to send some my way. 😉
@@nyoutcast3789 I will keep you in mind!! Thanks, bro!
I used to use one of those to hold deer before I had a pick up truck
Right on!
I have the Aluminum model. I use it all of the time.
Nice!!
8:30 I'd sooner use a carriage bolt w/ the head on the INSIDE and a locknut on the out. That should mitigate the rub that will likely puncture any container you're carrying in the cage using the supplied bolts. I say this because I'm looking to use this as a GTFO hurricane gear hauler. This will hold my extra gas, water and the like so the LAST thing I'd want is something that might rub through a container and puncture it while driving.
This is true
The question is if you can use that on a minivan. It may not give you the ground clearance you need. Good point with the exhaust
It depends on how high off the ground the van is. Also, don’t climb any extreme angles or do the reverse with this rack on the back.
You'll also want a tarp, some bungee cords to wrap the deer in the tarp, and also some good ratchet straps to secure wrapped deer to the cargo carrier.
Sandhills Shooter definitely
spoil the meat putting a deer in a tarp try to find something that can breathe apart from game bags
For that price that will do just fine as good assembly vid....Good stuff....
Thanks for watching!
I got the same one a couple years ago. It works great, but I had to get an extension to get it to clear the trunk on my Subaru.
I was worried about that initially. Yeah, that is something anyone needs to take into consideration.
ATypicalJack where did you purchase the extension I have a Subaru outback myself??
Renea Dooserider I found it on Amazon. It wasn’t very expensive.
Thank you.
Swing by an auto parts store and pick up a turn down tip for your exhaust to solve the heat issue.
May do that but I like the look of the exhaust so I’m just gonna do the heat shield.
Or just run that baby rich and smoke that jerky, son!!!
Thanks for the video. 😎👍
I got mine for $39 at HF and also had the little pellets falling out... all the boxes on the shelf sounded like there was sand in them... it seems like there is some kind of residue trapped inside the tubing... eh, it seems good, $39 bucks... all good...
I think it is from the powder coated finish. Still a good rack that I use.
@@travisp11 lmao that’s exactly what I told clerk at store sounds like sand in the box 😂 they were 69$ damm inflation at $40 would be worth it $70 is stretching it
And I returned it man that thing is junk u should see how much it wiggles and sags I wouldn’t trust it for anything more than 100lbs
@@joshymcdaniel9233 sounds like a $39 cargo carrier... 😉
@@lizardqueen2011 lol indeed! I guess u get what u pay for’ I mean if u had no other choice it would prolly work I just would look for a diff setup if u need long term
Nice Gun Metal Blue XJ. I have a 98 with the same color.
Awesome vehicles man. I love mine!
Aluminum does not weld to steel. Not knowing your skill level but I would suggest either going with the turn down tip mentioned in one of the other comments or take a piece of sheet aluminum (size and shape to be determined) and rivet that to the frame for a heat shield. Of those options, I would likely suggest the heat shield.
I’m doing to bolt or rivet the heat shield to the carrier. I have a buddy that can weld but probably point out what you mentioned with aluminum and steel.
Great video! Does all suvs come with the connecting part (hitch)? I have a journey and would like to extend my trunk as well
Not all SUVs come with the hitch but you can buy one online and install it yourself or have it installed
I would add some more lock washers
I will do that to those cross bolts.
Has anyone tied adding the ORV harbor freight carrier to the back of this?
Menards has the same exact one for $10 less ($15 less with mail in rebate). Its a great buy either way and adds tons of practicality for people who regularly haul a lot of stuff.
We moved recently and it works well. Just balance out the load on both sides and you are set!
No way it’s less than the $39 I just paid for this one on special at harbor freight!
You think this tape would protect my cargo from the exhaust pipe a little over a ft away? High Temp Tape, ELEGOO 4 Pack Polyimide High Temperature Resistant Tape Multi-Sized Value Bundle 1/8’’, 1/4’’, 1/2’’, 1’’ with Silicone Adhesive for Masking, Soldering etc. smile.amazon.com/dp/B072Z92QZ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_FbojFbAQTTDJD
BigReox7 I read the description and it will resist the heat but a few people in the reviews were complaining about the lack of stickiness of the tape. If you wanna use this in all seasons you may need something more industrial or just make a sheet metal heat shield like I mentioned in the video and you will be set.
travisp11 I was more thinking if it will hold up for a road trip of 500 miles? I was thinking about wrapping it about a couple dozen times right where the muffler hits the cargo. Last thing I want is my bag of luggage on fire behind me
Can u pls put a bike on it? Will it fit a bike?
No, a bike will be too wide.
@@travisp11 thank you
@@blueandbanana you are welcome!
For cargo stuff isent the weight usually the max? I think I'm getting one for 40 bucks you can't beat it
The instructions will tell you what the cargo limit is. Usually what it is rated for on the box is the max weight.
Hello from Nebraska too! Do you know if Harbor Freight sells the hitch to go on to a camper bumper for this?
I don't think they sell trailer hitches because those very by vehicle. They may sell a universal for SUVs or pickups but I'm not sure. Always cool to hear from another Nebraskan and thanks!!
I just bought one of these today..Possible idiot question coming... is there some trick to getting the nuts to screw all the way on the bolts? I get to a point where there seems to be a blue ring stopper inside the nuts.
Did you try holding each side of the basket up while your were tightening the nuts and bolts? Also, there may be two different sizes of bolts you are using.
I think I just cranked the nuts and bolts together. I may need to go back and watch my assembly because I don’t remember if I had problems with the nuts and bolts.
@@travisp11 So.. it turns out there's some sort of Teflon ring built inside the nut that allegedly acts as a locking mechanism. That seems to be what's stopping the nuts.. way before they should stop. I admit it... I whored the question around some.. ya never know if someone's going to answer. I was only on the hand tightening step.. someone told me.. get the socket wrench out.. that will get it past the Teflon ring. I'm going to be zip tying some hardware cloth on the bottom .. I got it to haul a wheelchair.
@@HealthyDisrespectforAuthority Gotcha. Yeah, the socket should help. I used a speed socket so that made it easy for me.
Older video but figured it doesn't hurt to ask, what is the thickness of the tube steel that makes up the basket itself? Been trying to find info on that and it's missing from every place I look. I want to get lights for mine to increase visibility and I want to mount them and run the wires inside the tubes for a clean look but can't find that measurement. Thanks in advance.
Downtown Redneck good question. I have moved, changed vehicles and no longer have the rack so I can’t tell ya. I would say at least 1/2” thick
@@travisp11 No worries, thanks for the response. I can make 1/2" work but was hoping it was closer to 3/4"+
Add an angled end cap to the exhaust pipe. It isn't level! I noticed that right after you got that rotting goat carcass off the carrier.
Actually thinking about getting one for my Cherokee. I want to take my mower in to be worked on and put in running condition. It has been in storage for years. The only thing stopping me is the price of the hitch.
It has some play in the mount. Even with the crossbolt it has a little movement. I can move it back to level if I want to. It isn't bent.
I know these things have some play in them. Come to think of it, that lawnmower is the only reason I would need a carrier. I feel like I will need a power chair in the next couple of years, but that needs a different carrier. I can wait until then to have my mower serviced. Can you see me mowing while riding in a power chair?
@@YoderTexas Bro, you will rock it!
I don't think that I have thought this through.
There are always jerks in the comments. Thanks for doing this video. It helped me.
Thanks for watching and I’m glad to help!
Hey guys I got a question? Would anybody know if this would be safe just to carry a standard lawn mower around on. My concern is that riding on the highway that the lawn mower with bounce and fall off a break. Any help would be much appreciate it
Michael Harris I tried but the mower was too wide to fit in the basket area. This was just a basic self propelled Toro.
@@travisp11 I have the same type. Just wanted to be safe . Thank you
@@mk19752004 Cool! Glad to help!
It looked like it didn't sit level with the vehicle. I hear that tends to be an issue.
It does sit level but any bias towards one side or another and it will lean a bit. Part of it too was the space between the hitch and the hook up bar. We have a little play there, too. Ive had it for a year now and it is holding up well and have used it to move items with my Jeep a few times.
@@travisp11 Good to know it is holding up. Thanks
@@Leonardokite Yup!
run a down turn tip on the exhaust.
walter schilling I thought about doing that but I like the straight exhaust out the back.
In the end I ended up making a heat shield out of some sheet metal. Works great!
Lol, Be careful with the exhaust, You might cook the deer before you get it cleaned.
Will do, I will be bolting on a sheet metal heat shield.
...medium rare for me please!!!...hehehe....
Nice vid
Mike Bihg Thanks!
Why would anyone tighten something to loosen it. Just put it together 100% and tighten it once.
True
It look like it is crooked where u sat on it. Did it bend?
No, that was the bit of play from the bar in the hitch, you can shake and rotate the cargo carrier a tiny bit. I just forgot to straighten it out when I jumped off of it.
I real test would have been if I sat on it Lol
@@tonyadinolfi2253 ah man!!
What type of wrench is that called?
I used a 5/8” “speed socket wrench”. You can use a variety of tools tighten the nuts and bolts. I bough the wrenches at Harbor Freight.
They get less rugged every year. Still a good buy. Al version is nice too.
I’ve broken one. Not the cargo carrier’s fault. 👍
Let’s just say that the “angle of decent” was not well judged.
BlueSteel.44 nope
...on my part.
13mm and 5/8" wrenches? so, this thing has both metric and SAE sized bolts/nuts? Strange...
Nah, that is what I had for wrenches in the house so that is what I used. They fit perfectly.
13mm = 1/2 inch
